Gilberry Returns, Vandervelde Waived

September 3rd, 2012

The carousel at the bottom of the Bucs roster turned again today with the re-signing of DE/DT Wallace Gilberry and the release of former Eagles guard Julian Vandervelde.

Gilberry did some good things in preseason and made the 53-man roster Friday, only to be yanked off the field at Saturday’s practice because he was cut. Now he’s back, the Bucs announced this morning. Gilberry was a defensive end for Kansas City the past four seasons and has a lot of experience rushing inside. He’s also got a seven-sack season under his belt. Greg Schiano had praised his versatility.

The Gilberry move is a bit curious and makes Joe wonder whether the Bucs have a medical concern about someone else on the defensive line. Otherwise, why would they expose Gilberry Saturday if they wanted him back?

As for Vandervelde, chalk him off the list of guys possibly replacing Davin Joseph. Joe expects the Bucs will name a starting right guard today or Wednesday.

Very odd… Or maybe they like one of the guys they have? Either way I think 10 O-Lineman was to much. Gilberry performed well enough to make the roster in my opinion anyways.

You mean the Bears traded a 7th rounder for Price in July not the Bucs.
Not even the Bucs are stupid enough to give picks away in the hopes of bribing another team to take it’s castoffs.

Looks like Schiano is doing a solid job of weeding the turds out on the Tampa roster…
Traded Winslow for Seattles 7th rounder – released
Traded Price for Chicagos 7th rounder – released
Cut Tanard Jackson, Skins sign him – suspended AGAIN
Cut Dezmon Briscoe, Skins sign him – released
Let Josh Johnson walk, Niners and his college coach sign him – released
Let Elbert Mack walk, Saints sign him – released
Let Sean Jones walk, Lions sign him – released
Cut Jeff Faine, only now have the Bengals signed him.

The Bucs might not have the depth to contend this year but it looks like they are at least identifying the wasted space on the roster and trying something new.

I found this interesting on pft

Haven’t seen anywhere that Briscoe has been cut by the’Skins, but all else shows team may have a good feel for dead weight.

  4. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    @BigMacAttack

Right on all of them except Briscoe. He made the Skins 53-man roster and has actually looked great this preseason.

Adam Caplan reported that two different teams said if the Bucs had contacted them before releasing Briscoe they would’ve been willing to give a fifth round pick for him. It looks like Schiano was so pissed off about Briscoe’s lack of conditioning and attitude that he just wanted him out of the building ASAP and didn’t explore the trade option. That was a major gaffe because a fifth rounder is decent value.

Otherwise I agree with the other decisions.

  5. Greig Says:

I messed up when I said Briscoe had been cut, it was a brain fart and you can’t edit a post on PFT.
Saying that he’s 7th on the Skins depth chart at wideout, who rolls into a season carrying 7 wideouts when they have just 4 corners?
Somethings got to give there, it’s just a matter of time IMO.

Also throw in guys like Ernest Graham who haven’t even had their tires kicked and it shows how bad we really were at certain points on the roster. By my count the only guy that we’ve moved on from that is within sniffing distance of seeing the field in the regular season is Geno Hayes (and the previously mentioned Faine)

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Vandervelde was supposed to be a great singer, and was a teammate of Adrian Clayborn at Iowa !

  7. Robbie G Says:

Wow, I am not sure what to say. I understand you need to kick the tires on possitions of need, but wow. I wonder who else will be coming in, I don’t think this was the end…

  8. FlBoy84 Says:

OL depth is still scary. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a vet signing or two after Week 1 when their salaries won’t be guaranteed.

  9. Nate Says:

Can we please trade for a DT!!!!!!!!

  10. Have A Nice Day Says:

Bucs needed room to get more OL bodies in for tryouts due to Joseph’s absence. Vandervelde was not a fit so he was released allowing them to get Gilberry back on the roster after passing waivers.

Teams make moves like this every offseason. Fisher said he wanted to get Blount back on the Titans roster after he was released to waivers too, but we snatched him up. Luckily Gilberry was still available.

  11. FLBoyInDallas Says:

They brought in two OL guys at the same time (Vandervelde and Cody Wallace). Obviously in practice Wallace outplayed Vandervelde. They used two waiver wire claims at the same position to evaluate the guys in person and see who they’d rather keep. Happens all the time. They obviously liked Wallace more.

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

*talking about Cody Wallace above, not Wallace Gilberry

  13. Macabee Says:

    Greig, Flyboy,

Geno Hayes made it backing up Briggs at Chicago. Following up on old Bucs, even Mo Stovall cut at Lions. Believe it or not Kyle Moore is backing up Mario Williams at the Bills!

  14. Miguel Grande Says:

A couple things, when you bring in a new player, you first have to cut an existing player. Then the new player has to complete the dreaded and unnecessary 110X16 torture tests in the Florida heat. When the new player fails the tests then you have to find another new player, he then fails the test and then you can’t find anyone. In a panic, you resign the old player if he’s available, he might not be. Gilberry was.

When you’re desperate for a new RG a week before the opener you can’t possibly evaluate him in one day. He probably came up lame in the torture tests and won’t be able to play anywhere else. Look for an injury settlement.

When you trade a 2nd round pick for a 7th round pick, you’re not a genius, you’re a rotten bastard. Then that player’s value to the new team is that of a 7th rounder. Politically, 7th rounders will almost always get cut even if they outplay lesser players who cost the team earlier round picks. That’s why Tiquan was cut, politics.

So when Price, and K2 were traded for that dreaded 7th round picks they were doomed to fail. Conversely, those 7th round picks Dom received are probably doomed as well. The players cut loose for zero compensation have almost zero chance of catching on anywhere.

Brian Prices attorney’s are probably preparing the paper work to sue the Bucs right now. They are still be on the hook because of his injury for his full salary just like Okoye’s. If Price goes on the witness stand in front of a jury and tells his personal story, the jury will make it rain.

Genius? I certainly don’t think so. Genius would be to re-sign Price and give him an injury exemption from the gauntlets.

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

Miguel, Wow. Where do you start?
I’d say about half way between a black hole and a hole in the ground.

  16. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Miguel Grande, I didn’t think there was anyone on here dumber than me. I’m glad you proved me wrong.

That list really makes me think about the bill of goods we were sold on those players. No wonder we did so poorly last year.

  18. Miguel Grande Says:

Pete, when you can’t honestly dispute my opinion, you resort to personal attacks.

If you thought you were so dumb, why do you post so often? Like you are pro football’s Oracle Adelphi? We have been subjected to at least 10,000 posts of your’s and now you admit, that even you thought they were dumb.

    Thanks, Pete.

    @FLBoyInDallas

No respectable GM would tell a reporter what they would have given for a particular player. None. The “two” sources are probably Allen for the Redskins and some scout on another team being asked “Is Briscoe possibly worth a 5th round pick?” or “Does Briscoe have 5th round talent?”

    @Little Mikey

Put the evil conditioning test routine to bed…. It’s common practice. Other teams run them or they run a series of shuttles.
Here’s an ESPN article about Antrel Rolle of the Giants who ran them at Univ of Miami. Same Florida summer heat. And did 20 reps of them – when not even required to do so. Of course this is a player who when asked played 5 different positions for a Super Bowl winning team. But you wouldn’t understand that.

“According to former NFL fullback Quadtrine Hill, Rolle’s roommate at the U, “We took pride in hurting people’s feelings with the truth.”
No one knows Rolle’s MO better than Hill. “A leader is somebody who’s willing to say what needs to be said no matter how he’s going to be portrayed,” he says. “Antrel has always been that guy.” The DB has also always tried to earn that right through his actions. In his time at Miami, he locked down the likes of Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson, but that’s not what Hill remembers most about Rolle. He likes to tell the story of being told to run 20 extra 110-yard sprints after the team’s conditioning test one summer as a form of punishment. Hill couldn’t persuade his fellow running backs to join him, but five seconds into his first sprint, he turned and saw Rolle by his side. ”

Trading a 2nd round pick for a 7th rounder… after years of playing and injuries is not losing value. Like a new car, the player can lose value. The rest of your diatribe is nonsense.

There is no “panic” when a new player is brought in but fails the conditioning test. The Giants just cut Mitch Petrus, claimed an Eagle OL who failed his physical, so the Giants re-signed Petrus. Very similiar to what the Bucs just did. Are you going to claim the SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS team is run poorly as well?
Go ahead. Make your case. Slam Coughlin and Reese. Waiting.

Cutting players at the bottom of the roster is normal. Bringing in someone who might be an improvement is normal. Every team brings in tryout players CONSTANTLY every week even during the season.
    Roster turnover is normal.
