Could Bucs running back LeGarrette Blount be the Bucs Fernando Rodney and close out games?
One of the biggest surprises in baseball this year has been the lights out performance of Rays closer Fernando Rodney. The guy, who wasn’t even scheduled to be the Rays closer when he was signed in the offseason, has been dominant in slamming the door on Rays opponents late in games.
And after securing a save, Rodney then does his bow-and-arrow routine to chalk up another victory for the Rays.
LeGarrette Blount may just do that for the Bucs. No, there is no such thing as a closer in football, but in theory there is. Blount just may be used in the fourth quarter to exploit tired defenses and help secure wins, so writes Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.
The idea of possibly being a closer, the runner who takes on a tired defense in the fourth quarter of a game in which his team is ahead by a score or a couple of points, is just one of them.
“Yeah, that would be fun,” Blount said as his smile morphed into a sly grin. “And it’s definitely possible. Anything’s possible. But I really don’t know what my role is yet. It really hasn’t been defined.”
How cool would it be if Blount was just used in the fourth quarter when opposing defenses are sucking air and peels off a 30-yard run for a score and then does Rodney’s bow-and-arrow routine?
Though Joe doesn’t expect Greg Schiano to use Blount in this manner, it’s a neat thought, if for no other reason than to see Blount firing off imaginary bows in the end zone.

The combination of Martin and blount will wear out teams from start to finish.

Carolina cut Terrell McClain DT outta south Florida, he might be worth a look. hes from Tampa, maybe being in the home stadium might change his motivation plus he was a rookie last year. idk just hoping for more depth. BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!

If the Bucs defense can step up and be competitive and if the offense can manage enough of a passing threat, they should, in theory be able to feed both these guys.
It makes sense now a days to utilize a two back system for the team and players to prolong productive careers.
If the defense can keep it close the Bucs should be able to do some damage, even without Davin in there.
I surely hope so…

Blount with fresh legs in the second half would be a nightmare for defenses after having to try and catch martin in the first half. Then again the other way around would be cool too. I believe Blount gets back on track this year. Too much talent not to.

DJ Ware is garbage, 324 yards & 1 TD in five years?? Makes no sense at all.
65 year old Mercury Morris would be a better option! What a joke. Again….hope it’s not true.

Joe, seems like you are going the extra mile carrying the water for LGB. No way the Ware signing is going to send him packing.
But it does say that if Martin goes down, they don’t think enough of LGB to protect Freeman on passing downs.
Am I being too simplistic?

Right now, DJ ware is a better option in this offense. He provides experience and know-how to this offense. Also , better depth for this season than madu could provide.

Let’s hope the Bucs have some leads going into the 4th quarter this year. My last regular season memory on January 1st in Atlanta will take a while to go away. I’m a little surprised Blount says he still doesn’t know what his role is…? I’m sure Schiano would have explained it to him when he told him and the team that Martin is the #1 RB.

I view Ware as a temp fix for pass blocking until Blount and Martin become more refined. People seem to be forgetting that Martin is a rookie. Once he’s playing in regular games with defenses at full speed and facing real game planning, he might struggle for a little while.
So far as Blount, I believe Sullivan is refining him as a pass catcher and blocker, but that will take some time as well.
So it makes sense to bring in Ware for pass blocking. The only problem is it will make the offense a little predictable.

Reminds me of Dunn n Alstott. Defenses didn’t wanna see us with a 4th quarter lead because that meant trying to tackle that freight train.
