Shocker: Tiquan Underwood Released

August 31st, 2012

This one has Joe shaking his head in disbelief.

Per Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, receiver Tiquan Underwood was sent packing by the Bucs today.

@HolderStephen: Agent for Tiquan Underwood says he was released by #Bucs today. That was one of the tougher decisions I presume

This, in Joe’s eyes, demonstrates what a folly training camp if not preseason can be. Underwood did nothing but make plays, day in and day out, game in and game out, never put the ball on the ground.

Yet he is sent packing.

Joe cannot remember being this taken aback by a release. It makes Joe start to wonder the value of watching training camp practices and preseason games.

Yes, Joe is stunned at this news.

  1. Robbie G Says:

Joe I agree 100%. Did EVERYTHING you could ask for. If he was .. let’s say.. a 6th roud pick would he stay, I bet. I am starting to wonder about these moves, I think Underwood would be more helpful then Sammie or Preston.

  2. TheRealVince Says:

You’re not the only one taken aback. The first shock for me was Okoye, and now this! Starting to wonder what the hell is going on @ OneBuc

  3. TheRealVince Says:

BTW, I agree with you Robbie G. I’m a Parker fan but Underwood has shown so much more this preseason then he has and looks to be a better fit. Color me confused

  4. RIs_Buc Says:

This only proves what true football fans already now.

training camp & preseason is worth diddly squat to fans.

  5. canadabuc Says:

I bet he ends up on the practice squad

  6. MadMax Says:

I dont agree with releasing him.

  7. Machiavelliii Says:

Maybe they know or see something we don’t yet know of. Ever since schiano took over everything has been kept hush. I wouldn’t be surprised if 80 percent of the plays Etc we saw in preseason will not be used in regular season. Maybe they purposely hid their best players? Not saying that’s what happened but anything is possible with schiano lol

  8. Tom Troccoli Says:

This is brutal! How can this guy not make the team!?

  9. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    canadabuc, he doesn’t qualfy.

  10. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m a little surprised too. The only thing I can think of is that he’s not much of a special teams player like Stroughter (although he looked pretty good on his one kickoff return against Washington). Maybe they just couldn’t figure out when they would get him on the field. You figure Jackson, Williams, Benn, and Parker will pretty much take all the snaps at WR, so that kind of leaves Underwood out. Assuming Stroughter makes the team, I would assume he would handle punt returns. Could we possibly be keeping only 5 WR’s?

  11. bucobruce Says:

I hope this means Shipley makes the team.

  12. princespanky Says:

The more I hear, the more I think a lot of this might be media bait. I guess we wait for a couple more hours until we know for sure.

  13. Santos Says:

This move alone has me questioning everything told to us by the NSO, he outplayed every single receiver he was up against, by a mile….I do not understand this move at all!

  14. Bobby Says:

Gotta admit…it’s a head scratcher. I can only figure that Schiano and Dom have a good idea of what they are going to pick up tomorrow and they are making room.

  15. canadabuc Says:

    The dutcher journal.
    How come?

  16. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Smith will return kicks.

    Some unexpected moved thus far.

  17. canadabuc Says:

Could be a game of rumors right now. Guess we will wait till 9pm

  18. Garv Says:

It is not a shocker. The Buccaneers did not take Shipley to release him two weeks later. I said after the game the other night that it was ironic that the two players who played best would probably not make the team.

IMO it’s time to cut some message board posters.

  19. BucThis Says:

WOW!! I really thought he would make the roster…

  20. lurker Says:

“It makes Joe start to wonder the value of watching training camp practices and preseason games.”

or the value of paying to see preseason games.

surprising to me. so they are keeping shipley and sgt stroughter?

  21. Matt D Says:

Tiquan is gone, but Parker stays?

  22. Machiavelliii Says:

Anyone think they might pick up price again if he is cut ? Especially with okoye possibly going back to Chicago ?

  23. bucthis Says:

Not surprising to me…did he return kicks? special teams?

  24. aj Says:

Matt, did you really expect Schiano to cut one of his starters? And yes, with this pass happy league, your third WR is a starter nowadays.

  25. lurker Says:

good thing we didn’t keep t-jax!

  26. Brain Says:

Underwood looked like our 3rd best WR this preseason, 4th best once Benn returns. I guess this means more Preston Parker…ugh.

  27. JonBuc Says:

Folly indeed….bring on the real season. Might regret asking for that…

  28. Matt D Says:

I feel Tiquan is a better talent than Parker, yes. Buccaneers.com had an article today about him too. Just doesn’t make sense.

  29. teacherman777 Says:

He is a true pro! A determined man! A tough WR.

I dont agree with this at all. Shipley is a big question mark. He is gimpy.

Underwood is better than Sammie. Its sad to say but true.

I am bummed for this guy!

What else can he do to prove he belongs!?

  30. Tom Says:

I sure liked watching Underwood! Good luck to the guy. I will assume for now that there is a method to the perceived madness. Fingers crossed. At least he was right about friggin T.Jax. I can’t believe he is that far gone to get popped again.

  31. Bob Says:

WTF, let’s just cut all people who played well but keep parker??? I thought , things would change. But …….more same old bucs

  32. jarrett Says:

Benn better have a good year, Dom if you read this go get evan moore te. We need this guy. can anyone tell me who the dt behind gibson is?

  33. bucthis Says:

Yes he had speed but is he a slot receiver type? Think they were looking for that after the big 3… not as fond of him, he never fights for the ball (goes for it), lets it come to him…even that long reception against the Patriots, he was fortunate to make the catch, a good DB would have intercepted or batted ball down,,,Stroughter and Shipley can and will do more to help the team…bye bye

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I wonder how much Underwood giving up that INT in the last game hurt his chances. No doubt he went up very soft and should have at minimum kept the DB from picking it off, but that was about the only thing he did wrong. I did read, however, that he faded quite a bit in practice, but he was one of the few bright spots from that miserable last preseason game.

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Parker is not my favorite player at all and he’s looked pretty bad this preseason, but he fits a little better as a slot receiver. Underwood is NOT a slot receiver. Parker had a good season last year, and has looked good in practice. I think it would have been a bit premature to cut him, unless he looked bad in practice too. But for the love of God, please stop putting him back there to return punts!!!!!

  36. Que589 Says:

What!!!!!! We need a field stretcher, someone that can take the top off a defense. Come on mannnn!

  37. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Why is Schiano intentionally keeping players he knows will hurt the Bucs, and releasing ones he knows are better than what we have?

    *sarcasm

  38. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Schiano doesn’t know what he’s doing!!! We need him to poll message board commentators and bloggers before making his damn decisions!!! This is Amurrica, dammit, and we have a right to have our voices heard!!!

    *sarcasm

  39. Morgan Says:

Please, all the tears over a guy that wouldn’t have seen the playing field. Relax. This team has bigger problems than their 5th or 6th WR.

  40. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Who do Dominik and Schiano think they are, anyway…the freaking GM and head coach?!!!

    Oh wait…

  41. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I saw with my own damn eyes Underwood make some catches in preseason games and in a few practices!!! How in the hell can Dominik and Schiano, who watched every second of practice and then went over all the film of Underwood again just to make sure, make such a stupid decision?!!! I demand to have MY players on this team because I watched some stuff on television!!!

    *sarcasm

  42. Buddhaboy Says:

So much for turning over the roster

  43. FLBoyInDallas Says:

The season is lost before it’s even begun!!! My predicted 53-man roster didn’t come to pass how I as a fan thought it would!!! We are doomed!!! Relegated to three or four wins at best I tell you!!! This sucks and I want Dominik and Schiano fired immediately!!!

  44. Adam Says:

I would take Underwood over Benn for the sole reason that Benn is a Dominik guy and Underwood is a Schiano guy.

  45. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Lol I called this awhile ago. I feel for the guy because he has looked good but I dont think he lit the world on fire. If he were that good, the Pats would of kept him around. It’s not like their WR core is deep.

  46. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I trust Schiano and Dominick to make the right choices. Some of these are hard to see though.

  47. Bucnjim Says:

Looks like they are making enough room for 7-8 free agents! If they don’t have the talent; why keep them around? Raheem kept his buddies around and look what happened. Who knows how many had to do with bad attitudes as well. We’ll find out soon enough!

  48. Back up kicker Says:

Joe, my man …. It is practice, wasn’t everyone bitchin because he was Shiano’s boy from Rutgers? Remember? Only here cause of coach? He served his purpose, to freakin skinny to be route tree effective. We need versatility gentlemen, love the overachiever, but Ship and Stroughter are goi g to be 5 and 6

  49. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @FLBoyinDallas,

LMAO, great stuff! Sad thing is, many people actually feel that way.

  50. Bucnjim Says:

How about we let the coaches and scouts clean up this mess instead of the arm chair QB’s.

  51. Macabee Says:

This is the 3rd NFL team that has passed on Underwood. Maybe the professionals know something that the posters don’t!

  52. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

JoeBucsFan always has the answers, if you look.
This may be the reason they kept Stroughter, and cut Underwood https://www.joebucsfan.com/?p=69563

Plus, Stroughter is a good return guy, but Tampa may be counting on his “Chemistry” with Freeman.

  53. Eric Says:

Well I suppose these nfl personnel guys have different evaluation techniques. Every there are guys looking good in preseason then released. Maybe it depends on matchups and running disciplined routes, etc. blocking? Who knows.

If cutting underwood really hurts us were in sad shape.

  54. Patrick Says:

WTF!!!!! This guy did everything to deserve to make the team! Shipley hasn’t’ done crap yet, how does he have a roster spot?

Benn better f’king perform up to his draft status or I’ll be pissed even more about this move. This guy played very well and worked hard.

I realize Benn was a 2nd round pick and we have a lot invested in him, but he doesn’t deserve a spot on the roster after seeing the way Underwood performed.

And why the hell do we need FOUR f’kn Tight ends?? We’ve jettisoned four of our DT’s (Price, Okam, Okoye, Wilson) & have no depth!

  55. Macabee Says:

I love it when all JBF posters come together in mutual WTFery!

  56. Bobby Says:

Look, this is why we sit on our couches and the coaches get paid. I remember everyone screaming when T-Jax got let go but look how that turned out. These coaches and Dom get together and consult and make the best decisions for the team. Do you think they are as friggin’ loopy as you guys are who watch a pre-season game with our fourth stringers playing and get all freaked out about the performance of our O-line like our starters were out there??

These guys actually understand personnel and the game of football beyond the viewpoint of a ‘fan’. Underwood is apparently a one dimensional player. Oh, but from your logic it was just that all the coaches got together and said, “Hey, Underwood has been productive…let’s cut him!” (rolleyes) Every year at this time it’s the same old lame comments like these guys that coach are absolute idiots and YOU need to be the one calling the shots.

You know…I’m going to trust that they know what they are doing. Schiano has shown me that he is leaps and bounds ahead of last year’s fiasco. That New England game was all I needed to see to make me a believer. If he lets players like Okoye and Underwood go there is a method behind the madness. Parker is very good on special teams. So is Straughter. If you can’t play more than one position you probably aren’t going to make the team unless you’re a starter.

  57. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I bet this is killing Thomas. He would have so much to complain about.

  58. BucFan20 Says:

I lmao just reading the posts from 5 year olds getting upset because other posters don’t agree with them or express their own opinion. Then want them cut from the site, tell them when or how they can post or bitch it’s the same old thing but they know it’s going to be this way, still read and then complain! Do you come here expecting every post to agree with yours and nobody to ever disagree with anything?

  59. Bobby Says:

By the way, the 49’rs cut Josh Johnson. Remember all the crying about how much better he was than Freeman and how he’d replace Smith in San Francisco? Yeah….that was a good call. More and more it kind of looks like Dom might know what he’s doing when it comes to allowing players to leave in FA and just getting rid of the ones who don’t work out.

I know as fans we want every draft pick to turn out to be the best one ever but the bottom line is that more turn out to be busts than turn out to be as advertised. If that wasn’t the case then there would be no room on the rosters for the yearly college drafts but strangely..there always is. Injuries happen, players don’t fit into certain schemes when a coaching change takes place and a new system is instituted. Some players perform well in college but just can’t do on an NFL level. Others, like Tom Brady, far exceed their college play and NFL expectations. If it were easy to guess who would be great then GM’s would never lose their job but it’s not easy. I think Dom has done a great job getting us talent. Now with Schiano and Co. coaching that talent I think we’ll see the building of a team that is in the hunt all the time.

Give it a year or two and we’ll be into the playoffs and not just one and done. This is going to be a very good team. Let us get the depth we need. Bowers is coming back. DJ will be back next year. A couple more drafts like this year’s and some more key FA’s and we’ll be rolling.

  60. Fear The Glow Says:

I was hoping they would keep Underwood. The only problem I saw with him was that he was never aggressive catching the football. He seemed to always try to just let it fall into his hands rather than going up and getting it.

  61. Matthew Says:

This looks like Your boy Dominik is trying to save some face by keeping some of “his” guys. “Always” Hurt Benn has shown nothing since he has been in the NFL. Sammie or Preston – neither has worked out. In fact, have ANY of Your boy Dominik’s picks worked – not ONE is even a Pro Bowl Candidate…. MD needs to go – he cannot judge talent….

  62. lurker Says:

    matthew,

yeah but i’m sure you can…lmao. i am sure you know more than dominick, schiano, and the glazers. the glazers will decide when dominick is done, and i’m sure they all know the expectations.

where do these idjits come from? are they florida born, or imports from the north?

  63. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

You can BET Tampa has their eyes on several players, just sit back and watch our next moves

  64. BillT Says:

I really liked what he was doing..I am surprised..

  65. Joke Says:

Wow, you people obviously don’t know good news when you read it. I would’ve been seriousl concerned if our coaching staff was anywhere near as excited about Underwood as Joe was — because that would’ve just meant that we had a terrible, terrible receiving corps.

I called this from the first post Joe made about Underwood — this guy may look good in an underwear practice here and there, but there’s no way he’s ever going to make any sort of positive difference for any NFL team. Hell, the team with worst receiving corps in the league (Jax) cut him after his second season there.

What’s funny was how far up inside his jock Joe got. It’s like it was his first time ever covering a football offseason — “Hey this guy looked fast in practice! I just know he’s going to be a superstar!”

Anyway Joe, don’t give yourself a concussion from “shaking your head in disbelief”. I’m guessing you saw, say, less than 1% of the plays that his position coach has seen since he joined the team.

  66. Matthew Says:

    Lurker –

The facts don’t lie – he CAN’T judge talent we have no depth – he should not be GM (and neither should I). We need someone that knows what they are doing and based on the talent we have on this team MD clearly does not. Nothing personal I’m sure he is a great guy – he just shouldn’t be a GM.

  67. MadMax Says:

You’re cut off Flboy….no more drinks for you tonight 😉

  68. Joe Says:

    Hey Joke:

How many practices did you watch? How many preseason games were at?

    Yeah, thought so.

  69. Justin Says:

Listen, Underwood is a solid player and a hard worker. He would probably survive the last cut of most other teams. Here, we have solid depth at WR. Sammie made it over him for return purposes.
What kind of an impact would Underwood have when the real games started? Everyone’s down on Parker for his fumbling on punt returns. He is our money man on 3rd and 7. Underwood can’t play special teams. He wouldn’t have been inactive on Sundays.

  70. Architek Says:

We have no choice but to trust the leadership. Its all about execution and preparation anyway so we can keep all the field stretchers you want but with no prep work and execution we go 4-12 (no pun Raheem).

So far Schiano has this team move in the right direction.

  71. Joke Says:

    RyHey Joe,
I watched zero practices. And I was at zero preseason games*.

Yet I was able to call this one correctly on your very first “OMG Tiquan is awesome !!!1!1 post way back in June. It almost sounds like you’re proud of having missed so completely on this guy despite having watched so many practices.

Anyway, here’s a fun idea: Why don’t we come back to this thread every, say, 4 weeks and talk about how very little Tiquan has done for any NFL team this year. See you here!

(*I haven’t lived full-time in Tampa since I left for college in 95. Thank god for Sunday Ticket!
