Okoye, Gibson And Run Defense Got Night Off
August 18th, 2012If you couldn’t find defensive tackles Amobi Okoye and Gary Gibson last night, it wasn’t you. Neither played against Tennessee.
This is troubling to any astute Bucs observer. Both of those veterans were brought in to shore up the depth up the gut of the Bucs defense, and that was before Brian Price was sent packing for late-round draft pick. But Okoye and Gibson are nursing injuries. Okoye practiced this week, but Joe’s unsure about Gibson.
What makes things worse is that the Bucs didn’t play well up front last night, and Greg Schiano detailed his displeasure.
“Misfits, missed tackling, and not attacking the line of scrimmage. You know, too much hovering as a defensive front,” Schiano said. “That was something that we talked about, an area of improvement. So it’s disappointing that we didn’t. But we got to go back to work and we’ll get it right. We’re going to play run defense. We will do that.”
Joe liked that Schiano line, “We’re going to play run defense.”
Thank you, Coach. Please, please, make that dream come true.

they need to cut some guys and pick up some guys who tackle. from other teams cuts next week. we have no depth, these two guys are out and we get run on like cheap pair of stockings

Why do we expect different results from the same personnel? Better get on the phone Dominik these guys are gonna fail us again with the same results.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

They’ve got tired legs from the dreaded 110×16 sprints, they just need a couple weeks off, or they’ll recover by the bye week.
I wonder if Donald Penn will ever be able to run those sprints? Maybe, if he loses 75 LBS.

As much as I’d like to lambaste Dom and call for a talent upgrade (because it fits my “Rah had no talent to work with agenda”),
1) When the 1s were playing there were no holes to be had. We played on the Titans side of the ball. We had something like 4 TFLs in the 1st quarter.
2) It’s preseason with players playing under a all new scheme versus a team already well versed in Munchak’s offensive philosophy. We’re still ironing out the kinks.
3) Most of the linemen playing last night aren’t going to make the team anyway. We’re going to keep 7-8 guys max on the d-line: Bennett, GMC, Miller, Clayborn, Okoye, Gibson and 2 of the sad sacks that played last night (Johnson and Gillberry?).

I felt like I watched a different game. In the one I saw, the defense had four 3 and outs in the first five series. We need those DTs back and those third teamers from last night won’t make the regular 53. As for Freeman, I was thrilled that he wasn’t forcing passes. First team score was 7-7. Not a disaster.

@SensibleBuc….exactly! It was far from a good performance from our first team on both sides of the ball but it certainly wasn’t a ‘dominant’ performance by the Titans when matched first team vs first team. We played them even
7-7.

Joe has often asked how will Sullivan call plays as a new OC. The Titans were clearly overwhelming our 2nd team O-Line. Should we be concerned that there were no adjustments made like RB screens or FB draw plays to compensate?

That line in Coach’s conformance last line really resonated with what I wanted to hear from him too. Boy we missed BP last night. I hope those two can stop the run or it’s gonna be a long year. Maybe we should call coach Rah up and tell him hes fired again and hang up real quick.

EVERYONE SHOULD REREAD SENSIBLEBUC’s comment! Well said.
I do have some concerns though. Mainly our backup quarterback situation. Danny O. is horrible. And I’m not talking about the pressure as a result of the oline. I’m talking about his skills as a QB.
Go back and watch…Dan did not look for open WRs in passing situations…he was too busy watching the defensive players so he could fall to the ground hugging the ball.
I would rather we still had Rudy than this guy.
My other concern…running the ball too much.
I understand Schiano wanted to get Michael Smith and Moses Madu the reps, but when Ratclif (sp) came in, I don’t recall seeing him pass the ball at all. Considering how bad Dan is, I think we need to prep Ratcliff as the #2, because he cannot be any worse than Dan.

we seem to be falling back into the “tampa bay tampons”
only good for one period….and no second string

“We’re going to play run defense. We will do that.”
That is a motivating line right there. Shows determination and a leadership stance of execution. There may be excuses but they will not be tolerated. That line kind of made me think that the night was actually quite a success.
Not everyone can see a chance of victory in the midst of defeat of a battle.

I can’t stand it when fans give up after a single game.

Miguel Grande,
During the broadcast, the announcers said that Penn was activated and completed the conditioning tests earlier in the day.

Sorry, I got blacked out.

Simply NO Excuse !….90 men….all the tangibles…and non of the intangibles… too much “it’s a business” and not enough sport ….the whole preseason aspect of the NFL needs to be evaluated…team camps then …18 games that count..1st two games with expanded rosters…after game 2 final roster !….No more charade !

I just watched the 1st half of the Carolina-Miami game. The Panthers starters look awesome, in mid season form. They added a major stud on defense in Kuechley and another great RB in Tolbert. Pilares out of Hawaii seems to solve their return game issues. Cam Newton looks unstoppable, I hate that SOB.
I still haven’t been able to watch the Bucs game but it doesn’t sound too encouraging from today’s comments.
These scab refs suck.

Miguel…Maybe you should become a Panther’s fan…BTW, Penn was out due to an injury, not failing the conditioning test. It is not uncommon for NFL teams to condition their players.

With Miguel’s scouting report and his reliable posts, I am a little concerned about Sept 9. And bowtie, shame on you, lol.
