Training Camp Not Always Good Barometer
August 17th, 2012This season, Joe noticed there was some hype about the apparent new Myron Lewis. Yeah, Joe noticed Lewis was making some plays in training camp… and was giving up just as many plays as well.
Also, Joe learned that there was a new Roy Miller, who seemed to fit Greg Schiano’s defense. That suddenly, free of pain, Miller was the stud of the defensive line.
It appears both forecasts were, well, premature.
Myron Lewis was his usual self Friday night, either getting burned on a play or getting caught in the wash enabling Chris Johnson to run amok.
Johnson was also able to gash the Bucs defense up the middle, largely because Miller was getting worked over.
The Bucs defense Friday night looked eerily like the Bucs defense that got lit up last November (although the play of the linebackers was mostly OK).
If Miller is to be the starting noseguard, he simply has to play better, there is no way around that.
Joe doesn’t know what to write about Lewis at this point.

First team D looked fine but zero depth. Same with offense. Got a feeling we’ll be pillaging other teams practice squads again this year. Big drop in talent from first to second team.

I didn’t think either looked terrible, certainly no worse than most of the other guys on the team. Lewis had an INT, had Cody Grimm not got in his way. He gave up a 4 yard pass on a slant play and didn’t hold containment on Chris Johnson’s TD run (he’s not a bad RB by the way). Roy Miller made a couple decent plays in addition to a couple bad plays. He had a nice hit on Locker early on. He really didn’t play enough to get much of an evaluation one way or the other. Same goes for GMC and most of the defense. Backups would have had to play a lot better to have played awful. Totally embarrassing.

I can’t believe how awful Cody Grimm looked. Not only does he not look like he is going to make this team, he didn’t look like he could make USF. He was literally 2 steps slow on virtually every play. Injuries have apparently robbed him of a possible solid career. I feel very bad for him, and I hope I am wrong.

Joe doesn’t know what to write about Myron Lewis?
That’s a shocker!
How about this – Myron gets cut from the Bucs 53 man roster? Could’ve, would’ve, should’ve….

I dont recall anyone claiming Miller is the “stud of the D-line”.

It’s too bad Brian Price couldn’t pass the 110×16 sprints. Playing without injury he would have been the anchor of this DL.
The good thing is that we should be able to select another Warren Sapp in the 7th round next year.
I heard Hussein Bolt is looking for a job, maybe he could play DT.
