Might Arrelious Benn Get Cut Or Traded?

Would a seemingly run-obsessed Bucs team keep six receivers on the roster?
That’s an awfully important question to Arrelious Benn, who was injured yet again (MCL) when training camp opened and essentially will miss all of camp and at least two preseason games.
Barring injuries, Mike Williams, Vincent Jackson and Preston Parker are locks for the roster. But Tiquan Underwood has been a legitimate standout so far, clearly has breakaway speed, and is a hand-picked Greg Schiano guy. And Sammie Stroughter has had a solid camp and appears to consistently line up as the No. 1 return man.
More important, all those guys are healthy.
In Joe’s eyes, Benn is sitting sixth on the depth chart now and Schiano has no personal ties with Benn. Per BSPN.com, Benn was paid a $2.1 million signing bonus and is earning about $450,000 per season in salary. So the Bucs have little, if anything, committed to Benn financially.
On the surface it might seem inconceivable that Benn, after being taken 39th overall in 2010, in what was widely considered the deepest draft in history, could be on the market or on the couch in a matter of weeks. But Joe has to think that seriously could be the case.
Trying to think like the leader of the New Schiano Order, Joe’s not finding a reason why Schiano would be committed to Benn if Benn’s not out there to impress him.

I am still not sold on Preston Parker just yet. He filled in for an injured Stroughter (in the slot) Last year and did exceptional compared to the other Wide Outs of last year. Sammie did the exact same thing in 2010 and had a break out season.
I am just saying maybe the slot is Freemans favorite person to throw too which would mean they will shine brighter regardless.
I personally still like Benn and Sammie better than i do Parker.

I think Benn has tons of upside. With that said if Schiano and the Bucs move him I have say Dominik is instantly on the hot seat if he’s not already. Which I don’t think anyone can deny he should be. His failures are growing too big to even list or overcome. If this years draft class is successful at all Schiano will get the credit not Dominik.

Another second round pick down the drain by your boy Mark. D. How many draft picks can this guy waste he should just skip the draft all together and just focus on undrafted fa’s he’s better at choosing those players. Preston parker is a baller, benn aint beating him out. I wonder if benn could return kicks? Sammie is a hell of a kr though and tiquan and pp can do that too. Looks bleak for benn’s chances of making the roster.

Benn isn’t going anywhere. Seriously, are we this bored for football conversation?? Big, physical WR that can get yards after the catch are going to have a spot on the roster. This injury isn’t season ending and until they know what they have in Benn they will hold on to him.

i’m sure we’ll wait to see what he does if he’s back by the 3rd and 4th preseason game. i agree with brad, he does have tremendous upside, just had bad luck with these injuries. then again if he does do well i can see us trading him for a key contributor d lineman (there are several teams out there who has serious depth in d linemen).

wasn’t it grande that was stating that it was schiano’s fault for the injuries with all the running? perhaps all the injuries are the fault of the training and coaching staffs and not dominick missing on picks. wow, my opinion is just as useless as another’s.

@lurker. You must be new and in this post your opinion is useless. No one in their right mind can give credit to what Dominik has done as a GM. I’m rooting for Benn cause I think he’s potential of being great but if the Bucs cut ties with him it’s on Dominik and will reflect poorly for his future IMO. This guy has nothing at this standpoint to hang his hat on. However he has tons if failures that everyone can point too starting with cutting veterans too soon to hiring bad coaches under Raheem to extending contracts to bad players and personnel (see Hickey). Once again his failures are too numerous to list. Which has nothing to with the Glazers.

Trade him for a 7th round pick.
Seems to be what Dom Does with 2nd round picks. He turns them around and trades them for 7th’s.
Examples: Win-Slow and Brian Price all cost is a 2nd and returned our value with a 2013 7th rounder.

He will, and should, stay. He’s a big strong guy that can block and has good speed. If I were the coach, I would convert him to a TE. As a TE, he’s probably #1 or #2 guy at least.

I dont think he will be gone.. I remember when schiano was first hired one of the first bucs he called was benn.. And told him he was going to be very important in his offense..

cmon guys, when the bucs picked up benn he waas a need for freeman, and wan an ok pick looking the big upside he has, but let not mistake about it, the formation and preparation its all about rah regime, a mediocre one, let see what the kid can do, i really want him on this team

Hes not going anywhere. He very well could be better then Mike Williams but hasn’t had a chance yet. One of the biggest mistakes last season was under utilizing him.

If Benn can overcome the injury bug he will be a stud.He is strong,fast and great at YAC(yards after catch).As upset as I was over Price I can understand moving him,although not for a seventh round pick.We need to find a way to use Benn more and he could eventually be our #2 reciever.

most posters on here claimed the glazers were cheap perhaps that is why the veterans were cut. so whose decision was it?
which veterans released by dominick panned out with another team? brooks, galloway, hilliard, june, bryant, or ruud? dunn would be the only one who did something for his new team. bruce allen released lynch and sapp. lynch did more for another team than any of the other veterans released. veterans get released all the time.
on topic: regis benn is an asset right now.

Whoever said Parker isn’t a good receiver hasn’t been paying attention. The guy just glides and catches everything thrown his way. He reminds me of a faster Ike Hilliard. Benn has just had some unfortunate injuries that he needs to overcome. His ability to catch has never been an issue. Interesting that someone with a questionable IQ of his own makes a remark about a players intelligence.

Wow, if this happens it just shows the complete and utter failure of “not a rock star” Dominik to be able to evaluate talent. The real reason the Bucs have been a bad team recently the inability to draft and develop players.

Benn will be alright. He’ll make roster. Bucs will keep 6 receivers and 2 TE’s. Reasons: Benn is part of the best 53, Lorig can play TE, he has great potential, and if Jackson or Williams go down the only other big receiver is Benn

Benn is safe. Who in camp beside Jackson, William, Parker, and Underwood have been making big play often through out camp? Stroughter is for special team if he’s not beating out by Mike Smith and other. If any WR is expendable then it is Stroughter. Benn is a playmaker since he been in the league. It’s even more dumb to get rid of the guy when we have pup list or IR to keep him and not count against the 53 man roster. Plus, guys like Gant and Ellington, can’t remember the other guys, can be put on practice squad. I can see if Briscoe was around, but we know where he’s at. There aren’t any threat to Benn’s job now. Man Benn in a 5 wide set with Jackson, William, Parker, and Underwood is hard to defend on paper. Benn can be the fifth guy if he’s still a little hurt.
My depth chart for offense is: 9 OL, 2 QB (practice squad for 1 qb), 6 Wr, 4 RB, 3 TE, and 2 FB= 26 on offense. We keep about 24 on defense and have 3 slots for a long snapper, punter, and kicker. The OL can be about 7 or 8 for other special RBs, TEs, or WRs for the offense. Or make room for Defense player that can make a difference. To me Cody Grim is on the fence as far getting cut he’s slow and the injuries isn’t helping him. Even Myron Lewis sadly on the cut list, injury just hurt him and lack of PT.

Underwood may make the team, but that guy has always been an injury waiting to happen. I don’t think Benn is going anywhere. That being said, this year should certainly be the last chance for Benn. This is an era where very young wide outs are playing well right away. To be an extremely slow learner in the modern day NFL will not help his job security for long.

Benn may not have had the greatest year in 2011, but in 2010′ he made some really good long catches and I would keep him. I believe he is a big strong guy with a lot of upside still untapped. No way I would cut Benn loose.

First of all, I personally think it’s too early to give up on Benn. However, I really don’t like the fact that he already has a torn ACL, now he’s got another knee injury. Can’t hurt the wheels of a WR. However, I wouldn’t be that surprised or devastated if we did get rid of him. If he’s not one of our 5 best receivers, then he should go. I don’t give a damn where he was drafted.
As for this ridiculous notion that Dominik should somehow be on the hot seat because his second round picks haven’t worked out, give me a freaking break people. That’s as stupid as stupid can be. A GM’s job is not based on the second round of his draft. His job is based on wins and losses, period. Obviously if he doesn’t draft well, then the team will lose and he will be gone. But just because his second round hasn’t been very good (neither was Bruce Allen’s second round, or first round, or third round, etc. etc.) doesn’t mean the other picks won’t come through. Bottom line is this – if Freeman pans out to a franchise QB, then we will win and Dominik will keep his job. If Freeman plays like last year, Dominik will be gone. You can’t win in this league without a QB. You could possibly argue that the McCoy pick is important to him, strictly because of the money we are paying him. However, he’ll be given a pass if Freeman becomes an elite QB.

…I hope the first offensive play is the Benn’d Around…it would be totally unexpected and would mislead the defenses into having onne more thing to worry about. If Blount were used, he would possibly get a good gain from it.
But I believe Benn is here to stay.

Dom traded a 2nd round (and 5th round) pick for K2. We turned that into a 7th round retun (Glad we could get something for him).
Dom traded Brian Price at Top 35 selection in the “deepest draft in history” for a 7th.
Dom should trade Regis for a 5th, and do it soon before he futher depreciates his value.
I was really impressed with the Bucs draft this past year.
I feel Dom, Schiano, and Davis (3 wise men) came together to draft a winner: Schiano- decided on film, character, ability; Davis- eyed talent, and advised Schiano from another perspective; Dom- working the draft board like a boss, and signing these picks rather quickly.
This was a great draft. We got a lot better for it.

Dom scooped up Muscle Hamster just in time. Could you imagine if the Giants got Martin to pair with Bradshaw?
Their RB situation would be as talented and as deep as their DE situation.
The Martin trade back was tremendous, because it was perfectly executed.
Also, trading back up the the 58th spot for LB LaVonte David was briliant.
I would take 3 coveted players/ out of first 4 picks any day of the week.
This draft was different, we didn’t just “hang around” and “take what is given to us”. Hells no, we went out there, identified 3 SOLID prospects and nailed them all.
3 Starters in FA, 3 in the draft.
Do it again next year, and we will COMPETE for years to come.
