Schiano Impressed By Anthony Gaitor
July 28th, 2012On Friday, the leader of the New Schiano Order said he didn’t want to talk about guys that impressed him because talking about a standout player in a practice is tantamount to saying others did not impress him.
That seemed somewhat wacky to Joe. What’s wrong with publicly patting a guy on the back? But Joe understood the concept.
Therefore, Schiano speaking today about young cornerbacks and specifically naming second year CB Anthony Gaitor as someone “doing better every day” was significant.
On Friday, Gaitor showed standout closing speed on a deep ball to Sammie Stroughter, a ball Stroughter laid out for and was disrupted by Gaitor. Perhaps Gaitor is one of those 2011 rookies that was stunted by the asinine lockout and no offseason program.
Gaitor clearly is someone to watch as the Bucs search for cornerback depth. And, by Schiano’s logic it might be worth noting that he didn’t mention Myron Lewis today in that discussion about young corners.

i cant wait to see what a full off season and GOOD coaching can do for some of these younger players. i hope Gaitor can show improvement over last season. cant wait for the season to start! BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!

You can tell from limited samples that Gaitor is twice the football player of Biggers and Lewis.
Coach Pisano has a keen eye for talent, so far I agree with everything he has done in free agency, draft and the talent he is identifying.
He also believes that he can make Gerald relevant, if he can he may be the greatest coach since Lombardi!

Didn’t get much of a chance to see him last year, but I was very impressed with what I saw of his college tape. Looks like a natural nickel back….great burst, very good instincts, willing tackler that shows some aggression, solid ball skills. I’m excited to see what he can do with a well respected coach like Ron Cooper, a full offseason, and some increased playing time. I’m not talking Pro Bowl or anything ridiculous, but I truly think he has the potential to make an impact.

He is a great tackler which Biggers cant do to save his life. I loved what he did at FIU, he can blitz, cover man, and play zone. I think Biggers going down might be a blessing to get Gaitor and Lewis more reps, both players I think have wayyyyy more upside then Biggers. Dont give up on Lewis yet he has struggled with injures and poor coaching.

Gaitor is a baller. He has skills. He will prove himself and be in a regular rotation before you know it.

Im hopeful that Gaitor and A. Black step up this year and lock down 2 starting spots so we can concintrate on Lb’s and D-Linemen and fix our defense next season.. then we’ll be contenders!

Yep. I believe Gaitor is gonna get plenty of playing time and he is going to show that he belongs. I could never understand why they didn’t put him in games to get rid of Biggers last year. He clearly couldn’t have done any worse.

I’m pretty comfortable that we’ve got the coaching in place to develop one or two of last years class. I’m betting on Gaitor and Black.
Anyone hoping Myron, “massive suckage” Lewis can emerge as a serviceable corner has been sucking on a glass pipe.

Still with all the Biggers hate… I’ve been watching games from last year (one at a time, so my stomach can take it). Just got through with the Titans game and Biggers defended 3 potential TDs in that game alone. Was he perfect? No, but he did pretty well. With a little coaching on playing the ball better, he could actually be pretty good. Another thing I’ve been noticing is that he’s one HECK of a special teams player. Almost always the first one there on punts and kicks. Yeah, he’s a gunner, but there’s 2 gunners and he’s there first almost every time. May not always make the tackle, but he’s always around the play and isn’t as bad as everyone thinks. Heck, he didn’t give up two TDs between Curtis Painter and Pierre Garcon, that was Talib.
Would it be nice if Gaitor turns out really good? Absolutely, but I have no issues with Biggers behind Talib and Wright.

I was hoping Gaitor would take over Rhonde’s spot as the Nickel CB. He is a bit undersized against wideouts, but he is quick and aggressive and can keep up with the slant routes easily!

On the Carolina Blog, some of the guys respect Ronde Barber, as far as pass coverage goes. But some on there think he is very weak, against the run, especially if a big power back is involved.
Some Panther Fans call him Rhonda Barber, because of the way their big backs had his lunch.

I wonder if Briscoe was sandbagging the Conditioning test, and blowing off OTA’a because of…………………… Raheem Morris. I really question if Raheem was tampering with Briscoe, calling him, coaching him on how to get booted off the Bucs so Raheem could get him in DC. I just don’t trust Raheem any more and think he is sneaky, fully capable of trying to get his favorite players. I would bet that Raheem has broken the tampering rules many times since he went to DC.

That is great to hear!! I would love to see gaitor as the nickel. As long as I don’t see Biggers on the field on key passing downs, I will be a very happy person.
BamBamBuc, You obviously have no clue what you are talking about, nor must you have watched Biggers that much. He is constantly getting burned, and if you notice, he seems to always be 2 or 3 big steps behind the receiver. On top of that, he can’t tackle for the life of him. Also, if you watched the games you would have noticed that the good QB’s we faced would literally target Biggers whenever he was on the field. Quarterbacks don’t target specific CB’s if they are good CB’s, trust me. Biggers is a lame duck.

Yeah I’m with you on BamBam. He researches everything carefully and won’t post nonsense like some of us. More fact based for him. I made the mistake of challenging him on something a couple years ago, he pulled out his club and went bam-bam and I haven’t done it since.

Biggers ranked at the bottom of every quantifiable statistical category imaginable by Football Outsiders. These guys are the go to source for statistical analysis of players. Like Rasheed Wallace says “Ball don’t lie”, Biggers STUNK big time last year. Anyone saying something to the contrary is drinking Kool-Aid.

BamBam may be right on a lot of things, but he is WAY off when he says Biggers showed any signs of being even decent last year. Like I said Biggers was of the worst corner backs in the NFL last year, and that is a FACT, not an opinion.

I don’t have access to the Football Outsiders statistics, or any other site using newer statistical analysis. I’m also skeptical of much of their findings, as it’s all based on what everyone else sees, which is TV broadcast games and individuals “charting” the game, which is subjective.
However, last year he may have been at the bottom “statistically” on those sites. But my eyes do not lie. Like I said, I watched the Titans game and he was there on 3 TD breakups, one of which led to a missed FG. QB’s MAY target him, although I haven’t seen any statistics showing where QBs threw at him more than other DBs on our team. I can say it was Talib on Garcon when he burned us for 2 TDs in the Indy game. I can also say that Biggers was mostly covering Roddy White in the first Falcons game while Talib covered Julio Jones. While White had 140 yards, Jones had 115 and neither scored a TD, so Biggers (while giving up some catches and yardage) did his job and kept the Falcons #1 WR out of the end zone. If you don’t believe, go back and watch the games (or at least the highlights) instead of just looking at “statistics” which can be subjective and skewed to “make a point”.

Another point, to use the statistics of these sites like Football Outsiders (which I only know because results have been posted numerous places) is that our LBs and Safeties were also some of the worst in the NFL. Our pass rush was also one of the worst in the NFL. So, to say Biggers was one of the worst CBs in the NFL, again to be fair, you’d have to say some of that is due to the poor play around him. Some of the other players listed on that link had better play around them and were still that bad. Biggers had virtually NO help, had to line up on the opponents #1 WR on multiple occasions, and he did have some failings, no doubt. I’m not saying Biggers should be the #1 CB on the team. That’s ludicrous. I am saying he’s flashed some good things, he’s been on the WRs hip in 2010, and some in 2011 (which is hard to do when you have to cover guys more than 3 seconds due to no pass rush), and he very well could do much better with the new coaching staff and defense.

I just want to be sure what your entire argument is against decades of statistics, analysis, scouting, & a neutral research/analysis site like Football Outsiders is; “Your Eyes Don’t Lie?” I just wanted to be sure that’s your argument for the court, “Bambam’s eyes don’t lie”.
I won’t get into the numerous psychological and medical studies showing how unreliable “your eyes” are with regards to memory, minterpreting things it perceives, ect. Instead I’ll just state that I’m going to need more than an “eye test” & hyperbole from one fan to think Biggers is a legitimate starting NFL CB. Does this mean he can’t develop into one? Of course not, but potential is something any player in the league has. Actually, full filling that potential is another thing entirely. Biggers measured by the statistics/measurable that NFL talent evaluators, scouts, GMs, and personnel people use is a below Avg to terrible CB.
