Greg Schiano Wants Mark Barron At Camp

July 19th, 2012

Bucs coach Greg Schiano meets the press after this morning’s rookie training camp practice at One Buc Palace.

Bucs coach Greg Schiano doesn’t mess with the Benjamins that dictate much of what goes on in the NFL. When players are supposed to be at practice, Schiano wants those guys on the field, so long as they are healthy.

First round Bucs pick Mark Barron has yet to ink a contract, thus, was absent this morning when the Bucs held the second day of rookie training camp at One Buc Palace.

While Schiano isn’t mad at Barron, it was clear the first-year Bucs coach sure would like to have Barron practicing with his fellow rookies.

“He is missing repetitions and a rookie, especially a rookie who we are counting on… ” Schiano paused to choose his next words carefully and added. “I am hopeful he will be here soon.”

Schiano just before being asked about Barron explained how repititions are so important for rookies, thus why this rookie head start for training camp is important.

“You get some individual attention where maybe a week from now they won’t get that individual attention,” Schiano said. “We will make sure as an organization they to get repetitions [when the veterans arrive] because that is on the only way to get better. [But] when there is more people here, there are less reps.”

Schiano is right, it would be great if Barron were there getting his reps. He will be our starting safety this season and he needs every rep he can get. RGIII’s deal is done. Hopefully he signs in the next day or two.

    Go Bucs!!

  2. DallasBuc Says:

I guess Barron doesn’t think those reps are as important as coach does. There is no way to quantify how this will affect our starting rookie safety’s development but it looks bad.

  3. SeminoleSam Says:

Toes on the line Barron!!!! Stop counting money and get in there.

  4. TheRealVince Says:

Coach isn’t the only one who wants him in camp

  5. robert Says:

    can theytrade him yet?

  6. Garry Says:

It cool how you guys think Barron has any say in his contract negotiation…

  7. Oregano Says:

The kid and his agent probably want to be paid top 5 money. He’s holding all the cards. The kid misses camp and he will look like he’s lost when the Panthers come to town. Then he’ll probably blow a hammy and will be unable to play or practice until Xmas.

If this kid doesn’t perform at a Pro Bowl level, Dominik’s neck is on the chopping block. Schiano will actively campaign for his dismissal, that will be the beginning of the end for Schiano as well.

  8. OAR Says:

    “Doom and gloom”ers abound!

  9. Buc N' A Says:

I love all the complete guess work everyone does around here that they masquerade as fact. You would all make wonderful politicians. Everyone is so sure they know what is going on behind the scenes, but you know what, you are clueless just like the rest of us. Offer speculation, but do not get wrapped up in nonsense that has no bearing on fact. Translation: Relax a little and enjoy the ride. Football is almost here! GO Bucs!

  10. bucfanjeff Says:

I’m a Mark supporter, but clearly he is dropping the ball here. Any GM would be. There is no reason with a rookie cap and 1 year of historical data to go off of, that any team has this problem. It should be very clear. Sign him.

  11. HouseOfBacon Says:

I browsed the comments, and officially declare Oregano’s the dumbest.

  12. OAR Says:

    bucfan
Relax, he’s our only one left. There’s 29 or so drafted rookies(several in the first round) that remain unsigned with 20 teams. I guess that means more than half the GMs are dropping the ball?

  13. SteveK Says:

    Let’s go Bucs!

Let’s go Dom, sign Barron yesterday!!!

Onus is on Dom for this one, pay da man puhlease!

  14. bucfanjeff Says:

OAR, yes, that’s my point. Contracts negotiations should not be difficult anymore with the rookie cap – for ANY team. I know it will get done. Waiting until the last minute isn’t called for anymore.

  15. Lion Says:

Wasn’t the new CBA supposed to prevent this exact thing from happening? I don’t see why it is so hard to sign a player under the new pay scale with the new rookie pay scale involved.

  16. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Clearly it is a lot harder than it seems. Agents trying to squeeze every penny out of the team and the team trying to save every penny they can… 2 completely different agendas but with the same goal to get the men in camp on time…. It will take time for this to happen.

  17. aj Says:

It’s not about total contact amount, it is about the guarantee behind the contract. The rookie scale has helped a bit with getting guys signed, yes, but the agents and gms have just found something new to argue over. No new rule will stop that.

  18. Big Marlon B Says:

thank u aj, one of the only people who actually has a clue. the exact dollar amount isn’t what the delay is about….everyone knows the slotting system determines who gets paid what, and they will all be slight increases over last years picks.

there is a lot more in the language of these contracts than simply “pay x amount in year 1, y amount in year 2, z amount in year 3, etc.” they have to determine how the guaranteed money will be paid out, how much the up front signing bonus will be, roster and workout bonuses for each year, incentives (for hitting playing time or statistical benchmarks, or earning certain awards).

there is also a lot of stuff as far as marketing, which is one of the big issues with Andrew Luck’s contract. everyone wants to make it like its a simple cut and dry process, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Barron was asking for a playbook THE NIGHT HE GOT DRAFTED. it has been said by many that he LIVES football, he was a 2 time captain of a national championship team featuring many NFL caliber players. does this sound like the kind of kid who wants to miss meetings and reps? no….but it’s just part of the process, and once he gets in there and starts making an impact, all of u “doom and gloom” pessimists will forget all about this and find something/someone else to bitch about

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

    Nice post Big Marlon B

Last year the Bucs fully guaranteed Clayborn’s contract and I think they should go ahead and do the same for Barron. He doesn’t appear to be a high risk like some of the players. Loyalty often starts with a leap of faith. Its easy to say when it isn’t my money, but Barron may reciprocate that same loyalty like many of the greats do. And this kid has the potential to be great. He has been both a leader and a champion. The difference on the guarantee really only involves the 4’th and 5’th year option.

  20. Big Marlon B Says:

it is now official that Luck has signed, so now all of the dominoes will fall into place. i’d expect Barron to be signed by tomorrow, which means by Saturday everyone can shut up about this (non)issue.

  21. Stevek Says:

Quincy Black, Derrick Ward, and Albert Haynesworth all got paid.

Let’s pay Barron, might be Dom’s 1st drafted pro bowler.

  22. Big Marlon B Says:

btw thank u for the props BigMac

  23. Santos Says:

I thought it was all over how much the bucs would pay if for some reason we cut him while he is still owed and signs with another team?

    Joe care to clarify?

  24. Brad Says:

Barron needs to put his foot up his agents arse and Schiano needs to put a foot up Dominiks arse. I know there’s language and guarantee money to decide on but get it over with already. I’m already not liking Barron and this just adds to it. First he shows no respect for the veterans or any class for Price’s situation and this, hopefully, short hold out is not winning any points from the coach. Dominik has to know this is his last year and maybe he’s being a little too careful not to screw up another contract. But delaying the contract is only cementing his future even quicker.

  25. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ Brad

how can u say he shows no respect for veterans? as most have said, he likely didn’t even know who Price was. as the new guy in town, i doubt he knows who every single one of his teammates are right off the bat. and he’s trying to come in and establish himself, i don’t think backing down and tucking his tail would really endear him to his teammates. for all we know, Price could’ve been a complete d*ck to him and Barron was just sticking up for himself. sure, hindsight is 20/20 but the truth is, none of us know exactly how it transpired so this is all speculation by all of us…myself included. but many people have said this kind of stuff happens WAYYYYY more often than is reported, and it really was a heat of the moment thing between 2 tough dudes in an industry where standing up for yourself is a necessity.

  26. tbone47 Says:

I might be totally wrong but wasn’t the whole problem of rookies being over paid the huge issue last year. So with the new CBA why should the bucs just pay the man . If the bucs escalate the price and the next team overpay’s then the whole thing starts over again and in 4years we’re right back where we started. Over paying rookies. Let’s let Dom do his job

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

The #9 pick got around a $12.5 Mil contract. RGIII got around $21 Mil. Barron should be in the $14 Mil range or a little less. Miami is playing hardball on the guarantees with #8 Tannehill and with all of these it is the guaranteed payout and not overall monies paid. Most teams don’t want to be forced to pay the 4’th year of a contract in case a player doesn’t work out, is traded, or cut. Now that rookies are getting less, the Agents want it all, and the teams don’t want to pay if they are getting paid by another team down the road. It makes sense what the GM’s want, but they seem to be losing the battles. I say just give Barron the whole enchilada and get on with it.
