Doug Martin Studying Playbook, Eva Mendes

The fine folks at BSPN caught up with Doug Martin for a light Q & A session recently.
Martin didn’t have much exciting to say, but Joe found these two exchanges interesting:
What are your offseason goals?
Improving my game and just trying to get into this playbook and grasp it as fast as I can. Show these coaches that I can pick it up and be ready to go.
Who would be the one celebrity, athlete or otherwise, you would like to meet?
Eva Mendes. Eva Mendes. Definitely Eva Mendes.
Joe suspects Martin’s focus on learning the playbook might surprise some Bucs fans that already have annointed him the starting running back but forgot he has no NFL carries.
As for Eva Mendes, well, Joe appreciates a young man with a healthy cougar obsession.

It is not just “some bucs fans” it was Schiano and your crush Dom who annointed Martin that when they traded up into the first round to draft a RB with only a RB that Schiano criticized when he arrived on the roster.
Get over it Joe, Blount is a backup and the team is way better off because of it. You should support your rock star who traded up to get his and Schiano’s guy – Martin.

“Starter” vs. “2nd String” does not matter.
“Winner” is all that matters.

While the days of drafting a QB & spending 3-5 years developing him are long gone, I think you’re assigning WAY too much weight to draft status. At the extreem, if Martin sicks, there’s no way Schiano starts him, it’s also possilbe that Blount comes in ‘all world’ & flat out beats Martin out for the job. What would be the big deal if that happens? Everything isn’t as Black & White as you paint it.

I sat behind Doug Martin and other Buccaneer rookies yesterday at the Rays game. Martin is a clone of Maurice Jones-Drew. Dude looks like a walking bowling ball. Hopefully he can play like Jones-Drew!

You don’t draft a RB in the 1st round with intentions of having him sit. He still has to prove it of course, but if he learns the playbook, he’ll get plenty of reps.

Blount is also learning a new playbook, as is the entire offense.
Seems like that might be a little bit of an equalizer as far as Blount v. Martin. Although it is still unknown whether Martin can play in NFL, setting aside playbook knowledge. But, whether Blount can block and catch are also open issues.
Sounds wide open and let the best man win.

With the occasional exception of a QB, no body plans to “sit” their 1st round pick. All 1st rounders are expected to contribute immediately on their respective side of the ball. If they’re on a team that is particularly deep at the position group, they may only get to play 35 – 40% of the snaps during the season, but that’s still a pretty big number for a non-“starter”.
The point is, I think that barring injury, by the end of the season, you’ll have seen Blount on the field about 45-50% of the time, Martin on the field 45-50% of the time, and Smith 5-10% of the time (of course this is can vary greatly from game to game).

All the dirty, dirty things I would do with Eva. Some of it’s not legal in multiple states. hmmmm
