Some Practice Sights And Sounds

May 15th, 2012

Nothing earthshaking in this TampaBay.com video from practice today at One Buc Palace, but you’ll love it if you crave anything related to Bucs football. What struck Joe about the video is Jeremy Zuttah wearing a long sleeved shirt under his jersey. The dude either didn’t catch the weather report, or he’s putting himself through some serious heat training.

Freeman looks like a different guy. It also appeared that V-Jax is a helluva lot bigger than I thought. He made Mike Williams look tiny.

  2. raphael Says:

very cool…wonder when Rock star will sign some draft picks ?

  3. Macabee Says:

All draft picks are signed except the first three. Stay tuned!

  4. Patrick Says:

I really liked what I saw in that video. You can tell there is more order and Schiano seems to be a guy who won’t put up with any crap from anyone.

Better things are ahead for this team!

I’m loving it! Rah took out way to easy on them practicing inside they need the heat treatment.Freeman looks great he looked bloated all last season! I still want to know where Price is! Was Penn over weight? How severe is Martins hamstring?

Thanks for the video post Joe.

Can you do a post comparing and contrasting this seasons OTA and previous OTA’s you’ve observed at OBP? Not to beat a dead horse – but I’m just curious as to what you see are some main differences. I know you made note of it in your previous update – but can you concentrate on that?

Also – this “biting the ball” thing…from what we see in the video and pics they seem to be pressing it hardcore…and the guys are following suit which is cool to see.

  7. GenocideD Says:

I saw a few of them “biting” the football. You can tell they’re paying attention. Love it.

  8. Macabee Says:

Brian Price had an excused absence today. He was held out of practice today because of dehydration and a high fever.

    Joe already has.

  10. Joe Says:

    Crazy:

    How severe is Martins hamstring?

As Joe wrote, it’s a “tweak.”

  11. Eric Says:

    Wow 5 has lost weight.

  12. Eric Says:

Amazing how good they look running through nothing.

  13. Architek Says:

Now that looks a professional football practice.

  14. Drew Says:

Did Winslow have a valid excuse for not being there?

I’m trying to understand this “biting the ball” concept of carrying the football. This evening I watched Youtube videos of the 5 leading rushers in the NFL in 2011 – MJD, Ray Rice, Michael Turner, LeSean McCoy, and Arian Foster. Nobody is carrying the ball like the Bucs are being trained in OTAs. I also watched the video of LeGarrette Blount’s 2010 1,000yd season and he’s not carrying the ball like that either.

Is this an NFL or college technique? Is this just for training or will the Bucs ball carriers be expected to use this technique in game situations? Is this unique to Schiano or is this an accepted technique in NFL training camps?

I googled the term and I found one reference to techniques taught in youth football called “screws to the ball” or “biting the football’ for training beginners who have never carried a football.

Please watch videos of the top RBs and do your own evaluation. It may be an accepted and proven methodology and I’m just unfamiliar with it. Would like to know more about it’s origin and effectiveness in the NFL.

  17. 941-Bucs Says:

Brooks, Lynch and many other Bucs in the old days used tyo always wear sweats during spring and summer practices. It gave them an advantage come game day!

  18. Joe Says:

    Macabee:

Is this an NFL or college technique?

Both. Check out Tiki Barber video. He got over his fumbling by “biting” the ball.

Trent Richardson also “bites” the ball. It’s not that uncommon.

  19. 941-Bucs Says:

For clarification it’s also known as “High and Tight”. It simply means holding the ball higher up your chest and locked into what is known as a “Perfect Football Pocket” inside your arm. It keeps the ball protected at all 5 points, thus stopping others from “stripping” or “punching” the ball out.

  20. 941-Bucs Says:

In practice, they will train to hold it just under their face mask (which gives the appearance of them “Biting the football). During Live action, they will more then likely hold it high on their Pectoral Muscle just above the nipple and tucked against theirs arm.

The training help give the arm more tendency to hold the ball higher “naturally”.

  21. Macabee Says:

    Joe/941,

Thanks for the info on “biting the ball”. Looked quirky to me on the practice video. But if this exercise will help ingrain the idea of protecting the ball and prevent fumbling or stripping, it is a good thing and I hope it improves our ability to hold onto the ball.

  22. princespanky Says:

It’s all about VJax… that dude is going to light it up.

  23. PewterSkull Says:

Man, both RBs and WRs were holding it high and tight!

  24. BuccoBill Says:

Where the hell did the video go!? St Pete Times and even Google got wiped clean of all traces of its’ exsistance. The Shiano World Order strikes again!
