Too Much Made Of Freeman’s Weight Loss

May 15th, 2012

Two months ago, Joe was the first in the media to acknowledge Josh Freeman’s significant weight loss.

Joe thought it was a great, noteworthy sign that Freeman was stepping up his dedication. Though Joe surely didn’t think dropping 20 pounds would make Freeman a more effective quarterback.

But that seems to be a prevailing take among national media types and fans. Rich Gannon, on Sirius NFL Radio, referenced “big things” happening in the division yesterday during a discussion about Drew Brees and cited Freeman’s weight loss as one of them. Daniel Jeremiah’s division-by-division quarterbacks breakdown on NFL.com also zeroes in on Freeman’s weight loss.

Did Joe miss something? How exactly is Freeman’s weight loss going to make him a better player?

Mark Dominik said Freeman initiated the weight-loss regimen to gain flexibility in his torso. That’s great, but flexibility, or supposed lack thereof, is hardly a critical factor. Look what Freeman did in 2010 at a higher weight. And it’s not like he’s ever been fat.

Joe just wants it clear that he doesn’t think much of this weight loss, nor would Joe raise an eybrow if Freeman puts on weight between now and training camp, or gains weight during the season, when it likely will be harder to maintain whatever conditioning regimen he has in place now.

Joe’s far more concerned about Mike Sullivan’s playcalling ability and Freeman’s weapons staying healthy.

    Joe, cmon dont worry.

Freeman wont even need a headset … They will communicate decision by morse code and Army Ranger hand signals. He will be doing Jiu-jitsu rolls and judo chops to break free of tacklers.

I can hear the Bucs play calls now …

Well, my really bad golf game became a bad golf game after dropping 35 lbs…

Speed and endurance are probably a benefit for Free dropping a few, but I pretty much agree with you.

  5. Brain Says:

The weight loss will make him more mobile and he’ll be better conditioned late in the game during crunch time. Not much else to it.

I actually think he’s too skinny now.

  7. Paul Says:

He got rid of some fat, it can only help him.

  8. Eric Says:

He can have the old Sonny Jurgenson gut and still hit a receiver in stride.

  9. Big Picture Guy Says:

Maybe he’s trying to reduce the risk heart-disease. 10 losses in a row couldn’t have helped his blood pressure last year!

how is it that joe can’t see why a player being in better shape might help him?

  11. BraveBuc Says:

I feel like Freeman is more effective when he is a threat to run like he was in 2010. Dropping some fat like he has should make him more mobile.

Also, it is a sign of commitment. Though, I don’t really think that was ever an issue with him.

20 pounds is a pretty big difference in playing weight. He will have better mobility but more importantly his conditioning will be better. Even though he shines the brightest in the 4th quarter already. It can only help him out. Will not effect his throwing motion too much. Or atleast you wouldn’t think so. But it shows he is serious, even more than he already was, and wants to win more. Him and Blount dropped lbs this offseason. I like it. He is still a huge guy for a QB so it shouldn’t have a negative effect on him.

I don’t know what the weight loss will do for him as a quarterback, but how about this: the guy thought that leaning out, weight training, and getting more fit would help his game. He set his mind to it and did it.

That tells me a little something about the man. There’s nothing not to like about him.

  14. Alessandro Says:

I think the weight loss will definitely give him more mobility and flexibility, which will improve his game. You have to think that with the number of fitness staff and medicos employed by all the teams, the reason behind the weightloss may be more to do with some change the Bucs want to introduce to their attacking plays

The “trimming down” will help him immensely. He will be far more agile in the pocket and when scrambling. Should also be very beneficial to his mechanics as well. Remember he lost 20 pound of fat, not muscle. Fat doesn’t benefit a player one bit on the football field.
