Rockstar general manager Mark Dominik did an extended chat with Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski on Friday following Day 1 of the draft.
Joe found this nugget telling on the evolution of thieving Doug Martin from the New York Giants.
On flipping fourth-round picks to get back into 1st round after Vikings gave up their 4th to do same: When we got around 22, 23, I started calling all the clubs at the back of the round. And I realized that there must be one team trying to trade up because [I kept hearing,] ‘I got better than that. I got better than that.’ Well, as soon as the Vikings moved [up], I knew that offer wasn’t going to sit around for the clubs behind us anymore. And so that’s when I went in and offered a lot less than what the Vikings did because I felt like those teams don’t have that [offer] anymore. And I found a team in the Denver Broncos that were willing to move out of the first round and flip in the fourth, and I thought that was great value for us to sneak in there and get the guy we really wanted.
Lots of great stuff here, so listen below. Great question by The Commish asking Dominik whether the talk of Ronde Barber playing safety was just smokescreen to help keep Mark Barron available. And catch The Commish live on WQYK-AM 1010 from noon to 3 p.m.

Dom earned the moniker Rockstar this weekend, we started the weekend with 6 picks, one in each round other than the 4th. We NEEDED to address the RBs and the back 7 on the defense.
Dom parlayed those 6 picks into 7, got 2 definite starters for the defensive back 7 and the 1A RB. He also got depth for LBs, CB/S population, RB and TE, and all of that depth should also contribute on Special Teams.’
I originally thought we should’ve got more for dropping from #5 overall to #7 overall, but considering what Cleveland paid to move from 4 to 3 (a 4th, 5th and 7th round picks), an early 4th is probably about right (don’t get so focused on the trade chart as much as what the other trades are producing). There probably wasn’t anyone else bidding on that pick, so I don’t fault Dom for taking it.
Especially considering since we did that, that 4th round pick alone became the ammunition to grab Martin and David, and ultimately pick the TE from Northwestern in the 7th round. What looked like a somewhat lopsided 1st trade, the rest of the weekend was filled with very shrewd trading on Dom’s part, that otherwise might not have happened if not for that first trade.

Mark is THE Rockstar, he has earned that name, especially lately.
This draft may have brought us our new John Lynch and Warrick Dunn, and maybe a Derrick Brooks ?

Hey Commish,
Great interview bro! I don’t think I have ever heard Dom give that much inside information to anyone before. Way to peel back the skin. It is even better for me, hearing the interview after the draft is complete and knowing how he owned the draft even more, jumping up in time for Lavonte David in the late 2’nd.

I agree with BigMac. Great stuff in that interview.
It’s been a while since I’ve trusted our GM like I do with Dom. Love that guy.
