Mark Dominik Got Played
April 26th, 2012So Bucs general manager Mark Dominik decided to wheel and deal and figured he outsmarted the rest. Unfortunately for Bucs fans, Dominik got played.
He was playing poker with the ultimate gambler, Jerry Jones. Dominik figured he could trade back with the Jags and just wait out the Rams pick who wouldn’t get Morris Claiborne.
Instead, Dallass owner Jerry Jones pulled the trigger, jumped in front of Dominik, and high-fives all around in Dallass as Jones picked Claiborne.
Not only did Dominik get snookered out of a stud cornerback, he got taken by the Jags in only getting a fourth round pick.
Bucs draft is off to a horrible start.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:47 pm
we tried to tell you Joe, about the pop-star.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:47 pm
ohh yyeaahh – Dominick and co. “played” Tampa took so long to make the pick. This was something they hadn’t bargained for
April 26th, 2012 at 8:48 pm
Joe, how do you know Barron wasn’t the target all along?
April 26th, 2012 at 8:48 pm
Why doesn’t Tampa just take the “popular” pick???
April 26th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
WHY DID WE EVER THINK THIS GUY WAS A GOOD GM????????
April 26th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
Dominick looks like a fcking fool. And he is
We just blew the #5 pick. You don’t EVER want the #5 pick, but if you get it you might as well get something out of it. We got fcking played…. NOT happy
April 26th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
Wow Dominic. Pop star got beasted by the big boys. Owned. What a terrible job by Mark. Total fail.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
This is only true IF you assume that Claiborne was the man he wanted all along. We’ll see.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
Coach Fisher gets his revenge for the Bucs poaching Blount a few years ago.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:49 pm
Barron – R EA L L Y??
April 26th, 2012 at 8:50 pm
He should of got more no doubt.
Its proved one thing. He does not know how to work the room.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:50 pm
Get rid of Doninick now!!
April 26th, 2012 at 8:51 pm
FAIL
April 26th, 2012 at 8:51 pm
YOU THINK the Bucs really wanted Barron??
April 26th, 2012 at 8:51 pm
Who the hell is this guy anyway?
#7 pick and THIS is what we get????
April 26th, 2012 at 8:52 pm
Not happy with a fourth round pick. Jerry Jones traded with Rams for a 2d round. Come on man
April 26th, 2012 at 8:52 pm
I don’t think we ever were targeting Claiborne. I think the debate came down to the wire to make sure they wanted Barron instead of Kuechly. We have 6 cbs on the roster right now.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:53 pm
The clock went past zero.
Bucs slowest team to get pick in – means they worked the phones until the last second.
Nobody – holding the #5 pick – knowing that 2 qbs, and 1 rb are going ahead of you – takes a strong safety.
Mark Barron is an excellent safety – he adds virtually nothing overall to the defense – good safeties are complementary players.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:53 pm
Absolutely pathetic.. We lost Claiborne for a 4th rounder? Ridiculous. If the Bucs have another awful year, Dominik’s firing will be traced directly back to this disaster.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:54 pm
Isn’t the reason they didn’t take Eric Berry is because you don’t draft a safety in the 1st rd.?
April 26th, 2012 at 8:54 pm
AT THE VERY LEAST GET LUKE!!!!
F A I L !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 26th, 2012 at 8:55 pm
To give up Claiborne and Blackmon for Barron to get a lowly 4th rounder.
Senseless!
April 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
Claiborne sucks. He went where he belongs. The Bucs never wanted Claiborne. Or they would’ve stayed at #5.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
I think the Bucs wanted Barron. They knew there was only one other safety in this entire draft who could’ve started for them this year, and the need was too great to ignore. It was either Barron, or no one, so they took Barron.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
Bucs couldn’t even trade back so they got stuck with the pick at seven.
We get NONE of the Blue – Chippers
April 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
At this rate we’ll be in the cellar of our division AGAIN! This cat SUCKS at picks and we have no cap room to get anybody halfway decent in free agency II.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
Great now Carolina takes Kuechly
April 26th, 2012 at 8:57 pm
Mark Barron is an excellent safety – he adds virtually nothing overall to the defense – good safeties are complementary players.
Pretty much.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:57 pm
He’s the worst GM in the NFL
April 26th, 2012 at 8:57 pm
I can’t imagine that if Claiborne was THE guy for the Bucs, they would’ve passed on him when they had a chance at him. Keeping in mind that Claiborne’s old position coach is now on the Bucs, if he had a ringing endorsement of the kid, then he would be a Buc at this point.
I agree that we should’ve got more than a 4th rounder to move down, that was Dominick trying too hard to get that extra pick back he traded last year to get Stocker.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:58 pm
Jesus, next year is the safety class– why get the best of average? they really dropped this one, even on the pick….
April 26th, 2012 at 8:58 pm
According to the NFL draft chart: #5 pick worth 1700 pts. #7 pick worth 1500 pts. Jags 4th round pick worth 86 pts, and a 7th rounder about 10 pts.
Numbers say, that doesn’t add up.
April 26th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
Dom lost out on all 6 elite picks, for a 4th???
Then drafted a safety??
Horrible, horrible loss of a top 5 pick.
Dom should have went with Raheem
April 26th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
i thought dom was a great gm until today i think he panicked and picked Barron
April 26th, 2012 at 9:00 pm
I disagree. They wanted Barron when they released Tanard Jackson. He’s all over the ball!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:00 pm
The teams who get the players they want:
Cleve, Min, Jax, Dallas
Get their picks in early. Teams with their pants down, working the phones for a trade back, use up all of their time.
Who was that so far?
The bucs did not think that Dallas would leapfrog them. Dallas was genius – waited for the idiot to move back one spot too far – and they pounced.
LOL
April 26th, 2012 at 9:01 pm
@Bigpictureguy. Yeah we have 6 CB’s on the roster that hot their asses smoked all year long last year with the exception of 1 average CB that we picked up in free agency. MO should have been the pick and this could easily cost Marky his job. It was that big of a fail.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:01 pm
Not sure what to feel right now. Would rather have Barron than deal with another top 10 LB. those have not been so successful over the past decade.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:01 pm
ok calm down people jeez. a month ago he was the best gm in the world by picking up nicks, jackson, and wright. lets not forget all that.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:01 pm
I don’t have a problem with the player.
Barron is a great player .
Minimum we should of got a 3rd
April 26th, 2012 at 9:02 pm
Yeah horrible start. I sure hope Barron is a stud and they get something in rd 4. The rams are piling up picks but need impact players. They got pissed the bucs screwed them out of blackmon and returned the favor.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:02 pm
Every Rockstar eventually burns his brain on Drugs. Should M.D. Check into rehab?
April 26th, 2012 at 9:02 pm
All i know is Mark Barron will start day one.. he’s a character guy (not like tanard jackson) i’m angry at the fact that we only got a 4th round pick… they needed to ask for a sweetner (like a 6th round pick). Mark Dominik got played by the jaxs and vikings..
April 26th, 2012 at 9:04 pm
Way to be supportive of the new Buccaneer guys! You guys should all be ashamed of yourselves. Pathetic.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:04 pm
What? No nore Rockstar? What a joke of a GM…
April 26th, 2012 at 9:04 pm
Going to reserve judgement but from jump it looks like one of the worst trades in history
April 26th, 2012 at 9:05 pm
First time post. Long time reader, but this mindset is crap. Safety was our biggest need. Claiborne isn’t that impressive and Barron is the best safety to come out since Sean Taylor. Give it a couple years
April 26th, 2012 at 9:05 pm
Yeah….needed more than a 4th for sure…..I’m ok with Barton though
April 26th, 2012 at 9:07 pm
Let me say this MO and T Rich were not the right picks. Not at the 5 Not at the 7 either.
So for those of you who think they were you have no idea what you are talking about.
Alabama won because of their defence not their offence. He was a captain and a leader on the best defence in the best conference in college football.
Give the man his repect. He has earned it.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:07 pm
Though I was hoping for kuechly… “You don’t take safeties that high”. Not quite sure about that. Which would you rather have.Berry or Hayden? I would choose Berry.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:07 pm
WOW – and WOW
HOW DO YOU SPELL Disappointed!!
… With bold, underline and italics
April 26th, 2012 at 9:07 pm
Dom is not a new buccaneer. He has been here, shockingly, for 15 years.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:08 pm
You people are stupid, what if this is who they wanted? We suck at safety, we got a 4 and 7. the Vikings got a 4, 5, and 7 so not much difference. Believe in the team not what you want
April 26th, 2012 at 9:08 pm
That’s YOUR “Rockstar GM”. Got SCREWED!! NOTHING to be excited about here, though I do think Mark Barron is a good player. Will you now remove the “Rockstar” mantra from this guy???
April 26th, 2012 at 9:08 pm
Guys relax! We won’t know the value of this pick for at least 3 yrs. I like Barron’s size and that he was captain on a Saban coached Alabama team that won national championships. Plus very talented and fills a position of need. Plus there were reports Claiborne was the 3rd best DB in this draft. Also, the Buc draftees this year will have better coaching. Bucs also got a much needed early 4th round pick so quit drinking the Cool Aid. Now we need RB,CB and LBs and TE.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:09 pm
Booo! I cannot believe Dallas and Jacksonville Played the Bucs bad move… Safety is a need but I hope he lives up to a 7th overall pick. they got played
April 26th, 2012 at 9:09 pm
draft team thought the 4th rounder was just a bonus (because they would get their playa) so they didn’t really “deal”
P A N I C.
CAN WE GET OSSIE Newsome up in here??
April 26th, 2012 at 9:10 pm
He knew the Rams could have easily taken Claiborne and would of if not for the trade
April 26th, 2012 at 9:10 pm
disagree with article. We got the top safety and picked up a 4th. If Claiborne was that good his DB coach wouldn’t have let us trade down. They must have graded them out equally and we picked up a 4th. If you want to be down on someone be down on Tanard Jackson – his ‘habit’ is ruining his career, caused his departure and demanded we pick up a safety.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:11 pm
Very happy with this pick, Barron is a soild Safety, physical, can cover and lay the big hit. Everyone relax, he will win you over in no time, Buc it.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:12 pm
y we get players with MEDICAL ISSUES??
HERNIA!!! AWW MAN
April 26th, 2012 at 9:12 pm
Barron is a very good player, and good kid. Only knock is that he was injury prone, 2 hernias and a down junior year.
At #20, I would say good pick. This team has desperate needs in higher priority areas. RB and CB and LB.
Yes they needed a safety, but they basically just took a slightly more athletic Jermaine Phillips with the #5 overall pick!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:12 pm
People stop misconstruing this. Nobody is saying Barron won’t be a fantastic safety. The point is CB is the Yankees of the defense and safety is the Royals. It’s the position that matters. A shutdown CB vs a safety is a no-brainer especially when the cherry is just a 4th rounder. There’s only so much you can be a homer about this. Dominic did a good job in free agency but the draft is and always will be the most important and Dominic grades out pretty lousy since he’s come on board. I’m not too optimistic after the start of this draft either.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:14 pm
OK OK.
Let’s work with the new regime.
Let’s TRY to calm down!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:14 pm
I like the pick but I agree that Dom should have gotten more. I mean look at the Eagles, they just gave up a 4th and a 6th to move up 3 spots and all we got was a 4th!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:15 pm
We dId not pick up a 7th rounder, just a 4th.
We traded back to the #7 pick!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:18 pm
The trade down value is horrible.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:18 pm
No “rockstar general manager” Joe???? I like the pick. Barron is a monster at safety and still fills a need. However, getting just a 4th round pick!?! That is awful, horrible, and straight stupid. That should have been a 2nd AND 4th round pick. Good pick, but I agree with your omission Joe. The “rockstar” term needs to be put on the back burner for that dumba$$ move.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:19 pm
They should now trade the 4th or 5th rd pick to the Giants, for Osi Umenyiora. It would help create some pressure and have a Veteran to mentor the young defense.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:20 pm
The offseason as a whole has been horrible…
April 26th, 2012 at 9:20 pm
Joe,
Have to disagree. Don’t forget We have Ron Cooper on our Staff, Who happened to coach Morris Clayborne and Against Mark Baron. Do you think the guys own position coach would have signed off on passing on his guy with the 5th pick if he was that much of a stud? In addition, drafting a guy that played against him 6 times over the past 4 years speaks volumes. Ron watched that guy and thought “Damn I want to coach that beast”
Well Ron, you get your chance. Welcome to the Buccaneer way. Joe get on board or get the hell out!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:22 pm
If you don’t realize how good Barron I guess you will have to wait until next season to see just what a great player he is. We needed a safety and a corner. We got the safety and a damn ggod one. Now on to round two.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:24 pm
Dominik didn’t get played. It was worse than that. He got punked all for a forth
rd pick. He just should’nt be a GM. He got the Bucs a couple of nice FA and a who cares FA and just blew the 1st round in the draft.all I got to say is WTF
April 26th, 2012 at 9:24 pm
No longer can he be called “rock star “. Perhaps “rocks for brains “
April 26th, 2012 at 9:25 pm
Dominik got punk’d. It is obvious what he was thinking and it didn’t happen. This guy and Morris were benefactors of two kids of a legitimate owner that put them into a job when Gruden/Allen was let go without a clear strategy of where they wanted this team to go.
If you look at the moves made by Loomis and Dimitroff lately and compare what Dominik has done you begin to see the difference. Dominik has no art for the deal. He may learn, but in the meantime, the Bucs will suffer from his inexperience.
The problem is we don’t have an ownership that cares so much about winning as they do about the bottom line. I’m afraid dominik will be here for a while. So suck it up fans, tighten your chin straps, the decisions made in the draft tonight is but a foreshadow of things to come!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:27 pm
On 620, Mark said he got nervous when Dallas traded in front of them. He thought they might take Barron…
RRRRIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHTTTTTT… (rolls eyes)
April 26th, 2012 at 9:28 pm
I like Barron over Claiborne
April 26th, 2012 at 9:29 pm
Thomas is of course totally clueless. It’s going to be so much fun watching all the naysayers backpedal next year. We have Claiborne’s position coach. If Claiborne was worth staying put for and that much better than Barron, we would have stayed put. I’m going along with Mayock that Barron will be all pro.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:30 pm
This was a horrible value pick. NOBODY had us taking this guy!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:30 pm
Maybe this will put an end to the “rock star” thing.
And maybe the biggest thing the Glazers missed this offseason is that they should have given out two train tickets out of town.
A safe pick, but no one but us it seems, had him rated this high. But knowing how good we are with our 4th round draft picks, I’d say no problem…right? I guess we just have to hope that Talib somehow is aquitted in Texas or we may have another top five pick next year.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:30 pm
I like the pick, we needed safety help as bad as corner. Go Bucs! !
April 26th, 2012 at 9:32 pm
Mark Barron is a beast, you guys will eat crow after this season.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:32 pm
@mark bennett
I think most of the witnesses have him as innocent. And IF he’s innocent, that douchebag Roger Goodell better not pull another “suspend a player even though he didn’t do anything” move.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:33 pm
Great pick.Cant complaint, just what the Bucs defence neede.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:34 pm
Bottom Line – Dominik panicked.
We dropped backed two spots, lost out on the elite player that we so desparately need and got a 4th rounder for it??? The Browns moved up 1 spot and had to give up 3 picks to do it. The Eagles moved up and had to give up two picks. The Cowboys had to give up a 2nd rounder. The Bucs have absolutely no idea how to draft.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:36 pm
The “rockstar” is at it again… SMH!!!
April 26th, 2012 at 9:42 pm
I like the move, got our 4th rounder back and got a back 7 starter (position of need with best player at his position unlike Mo Money).
April 26th, 2012 at 9:43 pm
This reminds me so much of when we picked Freeman! LOL! I never realized the people who congregated to sites like this were so devoid of football talent. To think that getting a top tier safety like Barron is getting punked just shows the stupidity of the typical fan. Everyone said that Claiborne is not good against the run. His position coach probably verified that to Dom & Schiano. I’m betting that Barron was their guy on their board after Richardson left the field and a 4th to trade down and still get Barron was better than nothing. Just because ‘we’ thought Claiborne doesn’t mean the Bucs did. Remember, the player has to fit their scheme and the reason they liked Wright was because he is a physical player and a sure tackler. Barron is most definitely a physical player and sure tackler. I don’t know how you think it’s a bad pick.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:45 pm
Joe, you’re an idiot. Don’t spread terrible rumors like this. If the Bucs wanted Claiborne (like you, I also originally though), they would have taken him at 5. They were targeting Barron all along.
Barron has NO question marks and is exactly the type of player any team would be delighted with, especially Schiano. Claiborne was the flashy pick, but we should all know by now that Schiano isn’t a very flashy guy.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:45 pm
You only feel that way because you had your sights set on claiborne. Apparently the Bucs didn’t think as highly of him. Barron is still a great player. Get over yourself Joe
April 26th, 2012 at 9:47 pm
Joe,
It’s official. Please change Dominik’s nickname from “Rockstar” to “Pornstar” because we all just watched him get f*@ked
April 26th, 2012 at 9:48 pm
This kid is gonna light up the Falcons and Saints recievers and running backs for the next eight years… this is a great pick. A thumper who can cover…great pick…a captain at the top football school in the nation…a great pick…
April 26th, 2012 at 9:50 pm
Patrick, nobody has us taking this guy because most of the “draft analysts” are idiots. The rest of the “draft analysts” are people who look at the other “draft analysts” and model their picks around the big-name “draft analysts.”
The truth is, nobody really knows anything except for the teams that spend millions of dollars to research these players. Even the analysts admit that Barron doesn’t have any flaws and both the run and the pass are strengths. Love the pick. You can’t get stuck on players you think are good for the team.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:52 pm
Just for the record, I believe we got a 4th and a 7th. We got snookered sure BUT, fact is, we needed a safety badly and Safety is very thn this year.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:52 pm
Anybody consider that a stud safety makes our corners better?
April 26th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
@Patrick…..he was #8 on Mayock’s top 100 and we took him at 7 and you say horrible value? LOL! You guys kill me! ‘chuckle’.
April 26th, 2012 at 9:58 pm
Mark Barron may become a great player, Im def. rooting from him.
But it doesn’t change the fact that Dal jumped 1 spot in front of us to make sure we didn’t get their guy. (For more than a 4th). Oh Well.
GO BUCS!!
April 26th, 2012 at 10:02 pm
I like the pic. Adam Shefter mentioned Barron was what the Bucs wanted all along. I’m hoping this is a sign that Talib should be free for next year. We need a hard hitting and great coverage safety. I miss John Lynch…
April 26th, 2012 at 10:03 pm
USMC Buc,
Very well said, I agree 100%. I would also like to thank you for your service.
I’ve been saying that our defensive decline happened when Grimm went down and not just GMC. Our record without Grimm is about the same as it was without GMC.
April 26th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
Ris Buc,
Dallas jumped 8 places, that costs a lot more than 2 places.
April 26th, 2012 at 10:20 pm
It should have been a 3rd no doubt
(see draft chart below)
http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php
April 26th, 2012 at 10:27 pm
DONTAE HIGHTOWER to the Pats.
EXCELLENT PICK
BILL AND I are on the same page
For all you naysayers Bill will show you I was right.
This kid is a STUD
April 26th, 2012 at 10:30 pm
maybe now we can lay off the term rockstar at least for now huh? this was more like a roadie style move
April 26th, 2012 at 10:40 pm
easy there joe!!!
April 26th, 2012 at 10:54 pm
Looking back now… when I twitted I wanted the other LSU DB on December 10th. (MO Clayborne) I like the pick a lot and I see several reasons they went with Barron instead of Clay. The pick is omni-fold
1. Extra pick
2. A “Tackler” Clay is one of the best cover corners out of college in recent history potentially. BUT he is not the tackler that Barron is.
3. CB’s our on “islands” Safeties play all over the place HUGE REASON!!!
4. Not a single layer of our Defense (DL, LB, secondary) could tackle last year. This guy can play on all those levels.
5. He’s a leader.
I could go on and on….
The pick is pretty good I think and I will renew my inaugural season Tix.
FACE!!!
Another 1st rounder YES!!!!!!!!!!!
April 26th, 2012 at 11:03 pm
Hope u haters feel stupid now.
April 27th, 2012 at 12:40 am
Barron was a good pick. Whether he was the guy or not doesn’t matter, I’m happy with the pick. Trading back up in the first round to draft Martin without losing a pick (only moved back 25 spots in the 4th) was a slick move.
April 27th, 2012 at 2:08 am
This makes me sick to read. Joe, we all know you wanted the bucs to draft Mo, you’ve been blowing him for months now. IF Dom & Company wanted Mo like you’ve been preaching for, why would they trade down for only a 4th rounder? How you ever thought that they weren’t as high on the kid as you were? And now you label this draft as “..being off to a horrible start”. Is it because they didn’t draft who you want? You sound like a kid who didn’t get the toy he wanted on christmas. Grow up man, it’s not like we took some scrub. Barron is a good pickup, we had NOONE at safety.
April 27th, 2012 at 3:30 am
Joe, seriously this is just terrible on your part. Could it be that not everyone was as sold on Mo Claiborne as you were? I’m sure his position coach in college would have a good idea of how good he would be. And seriously, how much more of an impact could Claiborne have over Barron. Safety was obviously a more glaring need than CB, and without that trade we may not have been able to swipe Doug Martin. You need to get off this Claiborne train, it’s sickening.
April 27th, 2012 at 6:00 am
Fire Dominck after this draft !….
Google… “The Peter Principle ” hell here it is…
“The Peter Principle is a belief that in an organization where promotion is based on achievement, success, and merit, that organization’s members will eventually be promoted beyond their level of ability. The principle is commonly phrased, “employees tend to rise to their level of incompetence.” In more formal parlance, the effect could be stated as: employees tend to be given more authority until they cannot continue to work competently. It was formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull in their 1969 book The Peter Principle, a humorous [1] treatise, which also introduced the “salutary science of hierarchiology.”
The principle holds that in a hierarchy, members are promoted so long as they work competently. Eventually they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their “level of incompetence”), and there they remain, being unable to earn further promotions. Peter’s Corollary states that “[i]n time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out its duties”[2] and adds that “work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence.” “Managing upward” is the concept of a subordinate finding ways to subtly “manage” superiors in order to limit the damage that they end up doing.
This principle can be modeled and has theoretical validity for simulations.[3]
“
