Stop Believing Greg Schiano Lied

April 23rd, 2012

Joe’s been irritated by a couple of his sports radio brethren in the media over the past few days, specifically good guys Tom Krasniqi of WHBO-AM 1040 and J.P. Peterson of WQYK-AM 1010.

Basically, each has said on his respective afternoon drive show that there’s no reason to believe the Bucs are not shopping Aqib Talib, even though both are completely aware that Greg Schiano came out last week and boldly squashed that rumor floated initially by PewterReport.com.

Schiano even fully clarified saying “there’s absolutely zero thinking on our part as far as wanting to [trade Talib].” And Schiano explained further saying he wants Talib to be a Buccaneer.

Krasniqi and Peterson have shrugged off Schiano’s comments as the kind of baloney response every team says when it comes to trade rumors.

Here’s why Joe disagrees: Schiano’s entire stated philosophy to his team — core beliefs, if you will — is Trust, Belief and Accountability.

So why would Schiano lie right out of the gate about Talib when it could undermine the credibility he’s trying to build with his players and with fans?

It makes no sense. And Joe refuses to believe Schiano would be so foolish. Joe has to give the guy the benefit of the doubt until he proves he doesn’t deserve it. Ironically, both Peterson and Krasniqi openly say how much they like and respect Schiano.

Now if Joe were to accept the takes from the sports radio guys, then Joe would be forced to believe that Schiano lied to fans, media and his team when he didn’t have to. Obviously, Schiano could have offered some sort of coachspeak about the Talib rumor that said, ‘teams guage trade interest all the time and no player outside of a select few should feel safe.’ Or he could have brushed it off and said something like, ‘I don’t want him traded, so you’d have to ask Mark Dominik if he’s gotten offers.’

But no, Schiano offered the make-no-mistake denial quoted above.

Some people cannot live without drama.

  2. BonesMahoney Says:

Because Schiano was just talking to the media and not his team. Coaches and GMs lie to the media all the time just like the media makes up stuff all the time. It’s how this whole thing works(and why fans should take what both say with a grain of salt).

Was Schiano lying? Who knows, and who cares. Talib can get shipped out of town. He isn’t good enough to get all the chances he’s already had.

  3. KD Says:

It’s obviously a false report. Dominik and Schiano are smart men. They know they wouldn’t fetch more than a 6th rounder for Talib. We are in no position to lose a starting corner in exchange for a 6th round pick (or worse). It would be foolish to check what’s out there when you already know there’s no market.

  4. DAN Says:

for the record, wanting to trade, and shopping for value are two different things

  5. Thinker Says:

Me thinks Schiano looks at the corners on his roster and damn sure straight wants Talib back, assuming he can keep behaving. Don’t think Schiano’s going to start lying until he has to.

  6. RastaMon Says:

Joe…stop stooping trying to make something out of nothing…..which Joe is this…?

  7. raphael Says:

could happen….don’t think it lying though. JUST BUSINESS…

BTW OFF TOPIC, just heard Saints GM had listening device in opposing teams suite where OC and DC sit…..WOW !

  8. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@RastaMon – These guys combined have many thousands of listeners at any given moment of their shows. Joe occasionally reacting to their takes is part of Joe being Joe.

  9. Theodore Says:

Schiano is lying and teams are lining up for the chance to nab a player who’s oft-injured and faces a serious gun charge.

The only hold up is the Bucs just can’t decide if they want a #1 this year or two #1s the next two years.

  10. Captain Stagger Says:

Buy high and sell low ??? Even a man that leaves work at 4 knows better.

  11. Jessup Says:

No team is ever interested in trading a player…..until the trade is official.

  12. MikeWilliamsLiver Says:

The highly cynical New Yorker, Kras-Cranky will say anything for phone calls. Not sure about the other guys motive. I believe Schiano

  13. jvato24 Says:

THey asked him about the draft too … He said, If Im going to answer it I am going to tell you the truth .. SO I am not going to answer that

This guy seems legit and honest .. So much for the Gruden comparisons .. But think about it for a minute …

Schiano wants to run a Pressure Defense. He may be able to draft Claiborne and have Talib around on the cheap for 1 season.

How much better will that Pressure Defense work with Talib, Claiborne, Barber and Wright in the fold ?? !?

  14. bubba Says:

    jvato24: Nailed it!

He very openly said, I’m sorry but if I answer that I will put my team at a disadvantage as I will not lie to you. His whole philosophy is based on honesty and trust.

Schiano made it VERY clear that he will NOT get into any ‘rumors’ normally but wanted to make sure this one, stopped right away. THAT is why he commented. Yet, people don’t like what they hear so he MUST BE a LIAR!

Maybe folks are not used to guys NOT lying?

  15. Karl Says:

    Yeah, what he said.

  16. Karl Says:

    that one guy.

  17. Drew Says:

Joe here’s an example for thought. I heard from an unnamed source you car jacked Obama. Your natural response would be BS and then I would call you a liar because I heard it from a source I trusted.

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

Joe, I totally agree with your take on this one. So if you’re a fool for believing Schiano, then I am too. Schiano also said in his presser that he wouldn’t comment on certain things because he can’t help but tell the truth. It is kind of a cheap shot that they are taking at Schiano. He is our coach, that isn’t changing anytime soon, and I support him all they way, 110%.

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Sorry to repeat anything else said, should have read comments first

    … and Go Bucs!!!

  20. Brown Bag Says:

So if they trade Talib,w e know we have another Gruden/Allen on our hands. If we don’t we have a Dungy (or at least Dungy-esque)

  21. Thomas2.2 Says:

    You guys are complete amateurs:

    Here is what happened:

PR was correct, Dom was shopping Talib secretly. Somebody leaked it to PR, it went public and the search was squashed for 2 reasons:

    1) no team had any interest because of the pending incarceration and suspension;
    2) Schiano was pissed about the leak and the damage it did to the team.

Thus, PR reported accurately, and Schiano was completely truthful when he said at the time ” that there was zero thinking” about trading Talib.

Schiano did not say “we never considered trading Talib.” – which would have created a conflict with PR.

Come on guys and Joe – think about things.

  22. Pete 422 Says:

Schiano is doing the right thing. Let the Talib’s legal issues play out & go from there. IF Talib is exonerated, coach has a good player and hopefully Talib continues to be a good soldier. If Talib dodges this “legal bullet,” he has too much at risk not to fall in line.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

Thomas, I have two words about the post you just made.

    “Prove It”

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

    Two words for PR.

    “Prove It”

    JP & Kraz.

    “Prove It”

WTF? Thomas, you’re cool, but the rest of these radio/beat clowns that make public statements that they can’t back up are irresponsible idiots. Shouldn’t you verify a rumor before you run with it?

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Look at what this same type of irresponsible reporting is doing to Warren Sapp. It may cost him his job, and a lawsuit. Lesson to the wise, STFU, or get your facts straight.

  26. Jerry Says:

Thank you Fr. Joe … thankfully there is forgiveness and redemption for us all, including Talib, if he deserves it.

  27. Pete Dutcher Says:

You know…Schiano was only speaking for himself. Dominick could make other plans.

AND a lie this close to the draft? Naaaw that never happens.

    Plans change.

  28. BucFan20 Says:

PR went down hill fast after CC left. Looks like SR is grasping at straws now. Hell they are always a day late and a dollar short on Bucs news anyway (that’s why I come here now). JP Peterson?? What a joke he is. I take anything he says with a grain of salt. Coach said from day 1 the man had a clean slate with him and wanted to keep him. He has once again stated the same. So how hard is that to understand.

  29. Eric Says:

I dont think he was lying or posturing.

Would be foolish to do a 180 like that when your trying to build confidence.

Of course if someone put a nice package together for Talib, a very unlikely scenario, he would listen.

Doubt he is actively trying to unload him.

  30. Lion Says:

    Side note here…

Worst NFL mock draft I have seen yet. This guy must be off his meds. Link below.

  31. BucBuckeye Says:

Those who think your head coach should always tell the media the truth…are freaking morons.

I hope he is shopping Talib, and I hope he gets something good…but in reality…who is going to buy a cabby punching, irrational, wannabe killer…waiting to find out if he goes on trial facing BIG jail time…in the final year of his contract?

I’m wondering if this is simply what happens when media types become succesfull running coaches out of town that won’t drop them juicy secrets…because certain media tyes don’t like breaking a sweat, while faking shock and dismay…writing about grown men who play a kids game.

Or is this just stupid, moronic, fools who think our head coach should be unlike ALL the other coaches in the NFL who refuse to show their cards to the media!?

  32. Bucco Bruce Says:

@Lion You obviously didn’t read his explanation before the mock draft he posted. It clearly states that it is not him trying to determine what the draft boards for teams look like or who they will take, but instead his version of who they should take based solely on film only.

  33. Lion Says:

    @ Bucco Bruce

Yeah of course I read that crap and I still disagree fully. IF he were truly going off tape Janoris Jenkins would be the first corner off the board. Stephen Gilmore top 3 based on film, oh please. Michael Floyd going ahead of Blackmon based on film, are you serious? Floyd may have more talent (who knows) but if it were truly based on “film” Blackmon would be picked over Floyd anyday. Ryan Tannehil going in the top 10 based on “film”, are you high Bucco? Did you even notice the picks or did you just see his lame excuse for a crap mock draft and believe it? Even based solely on film it is still a terrible mock.

  34. Pete Dutcher Says:

    Lion
You are right, that is THE worse draft I’ve ever seen.

I don’t think Janoris Jenkins will even go in rounds 1-4 after he admitted that he still does drugs. He’ll be lucky to be drafted at all.

  35. Garv Says:

    Well…….apparent it’s a radio jock’s JOB to reach.

    Shocking.

  36. Bobby Says:

I believe Schiano. I too thought of the comment he made when asked about the draft and he said “If I answer I’m gonna tell you the truth so I’m not going to answer.” Coach Schiano is a man of faith and integrity and I believe honesty is important to him. He realizes he doesn’t have to lie..he just doesn’t have to comment on every question. It would make no sense for him to lie about the Talib rumor. He could have easily deflected that rumor by saying “You’d have to ask Dom about that.” or just refusing to comment. The fact that he took the question and gave the answer he did tells me he knows absolutely nothing about a trade involving Talib. Is Dom trying to shop Talib behind Schiano’s back?? Highly doubtful, as a matter of fact…I think we can rule that out.

  37. Bucco Bruce Says:

@ Lion Oh there are certainly some major flaws in his ideas of where people are placed upon soley tape. I was just clarifying that it isn’t really a legit mock draft. Although I do feel a few guys like Jenkins are more talented, they obviously aren’t worth the picks he put them at. He is most likely high just like Jenkins but at any rate it was a very interesting take no matter how crazy it is.
