Bizarre Trade Rumor Swirling Around Talib

April 18th, 2012

It’s almost ridiculous to think there’s a general manager in the NFL that would consider trading for Aqib Talib.

The man could be incarcerated or get a lengthy league suspension by summertime, plus he’s injury prone and only has a year left on his contract.

Mark Dominik: So we’re looking to move Talib. What will you cough up?
NFL GM: That’s a good one, Rockstar. That’s almost as funny as when you called last week shopping Quincy Black.

Joe’s painted this hypothetical picture because PewterReport.com guru Scott Reynolds is running with an anonymous-source story stating the Bucs are shopping Talib. Feel free to click through and read it.

Joe frowns on anonymous-source journalism in general. There’s just no point in most cases.

Regardless, if Dominik is shopping Talib — or a third of the Bucs roster — Joe wouldn’t be surprised. That’s what GMs do after a crappy season and the entrance of a new regime.

Wow … this would be the first story PR has broken since 2006

  2. jvato24 Says:

or PR.com … PR would infer they have a magazine

  3. Capt. Tim Says:

If he trades him for two bags of trash- we’ve doubled our money!

I’d trade him and quincy for a bag of footballs.

If Dom can get anyone to trade picks for either one( so far, no interest at any price), then he will truly be a great Gm. In fact- a Rockstar!

Cause- other than Raheem( and I doubt he wants ’em), nobody else would bring that cancer in their locker room

  4. ClayBURN94 Says:

I hope the rumors are true then we can get an extra 2nd and 4th rounder and have ammo to trade back into the first if we wanted. Either way is a win win.

  5. SensibleBuc Says:

“Regardless, if Dominik is shopping Talib — or a third of the Bucs roster — Joe wouldn’t be surprised. That’s what GMs do after a crappy season and the entrance of a new regime.”

Exactly. He wouldn’t be doing his job otherwise.

Just playing devil’s advocate here but if you were, say, the Redskins, wouldn’t you rather give up 5th-7th rounder with a pre-agreed financially reasonable contract extension (2 million/year on a 4 year deal with limited guarantees) with Talib instead of letting him hit the open market and have some (other) crazy team overpay him?

  6. BonesMahoney Says:

If Talib gets traded anytime before his trial it will be for something like a conditional 5th rounder. Conditional based on if he goes to prison and/or gets suspended. But more than likely no team will give up anything for him so they might as well wait this out.

  7. Bubba Says:

i could see Raheem going in to Allen’s office to see if he could get Talib to pair with Jackson out in Washington. Allen would probably give up their 3rd to get a guy like Talib!

  8. raphael Says:

4th rd pick would be awesome

  9. bucbelevr Says:

    @Raphael…

Agree, a 4th rounder would suffice. Hope we cut Black after the draft.

    @admin…Joe,

Joe has no more proof, at this point, that the “anonymous source” is false, than Joe has proof that the source is accurate.

  10. patrickbucs Says:

I can’t see anyone trading for him without guarantees against his jail and/or his possible lenghthy suspension. It may be true they are seeing what’s out there but I would be shocked if they could get anything.

I think we should wait and see what happens with his trial, what shape he is in, and possible suspension. He has a low cap number I believe and he is talented. Maybe he gets off of this and changes his life around, he’s a complete ass but has shown in the past he can be a top 10 corner.

  11. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@bucbelevr – Joe never wrote or implied that the source is accurate or inaccurate. So what’s your point?

  12. T in Orlando Says:

Trying to trade Talib makes sense, actually envisioning a scenario where Talib is traded before his trial and any NFL discipline action is levied is difficult.

If Talib faces no jailtime, and less than 4 games suspension, why would Dominick take anything less than a 3rd for him (even with his off field history), he is at least that talented. Why would another GM offer anything more than 7th before Talib’s trial, given the uncertainty that surrounds Talib.

Again, the fact there’s talk is not surprising, actually seeing it happen would be very surprising and a big risk for one of the sides.

  13. Brandon Says:

As long as Bruce Allen has a job and has Raheem Morris under his employment…and the Redskins need CBs… there will always be a logical place for Talib.

  14. Patrick Says:

I don’t want a trade to happen unless we get a 2nd rounder, otherwise it’s stupid. Our defense is god awful…..we can’t make it any worse. Eric Wright sucks, and Ronde can’t play until he’s 70. We don’t even know if Talib is guilty yet!

  15. bucbelevr Says:

🙂 Point being, Joe, …………..that often times the primary relevance of local fan sites, is (hopefully) to BREAK news, every now and again, and with regard to pre-draft sources on trades and those front office contacts having their heads handed to them w/in their organization, then often times the initial shred of information on this type of story, would HAVE to be “anonymously” sourced!

“Frowning on” perhaps a journalist at minimum, trying to BREAK some new Bucs info on the draft/trades this type of year, is perhaps not a luxury all sites, can afford…unless maybe they “break” information routinely.

  16. BonesMahoney Says:

The best comparison for Talib is probably Santonio Holmes. A couple incidents his rookie year, couple years later busted for marijuana, couple years after that had some trouble in a nightclub. Steelers traded him for a 5th rounder and he was suspended for 4 games. Hard to compare a WR to a CB but I would say Holmes is a better WR than Talib is a CB at this point. Wishing for anything more than a 5th rounder is probably just being optimistic.

  17. Kryq Says:

Makes no sense to trade him now, Our defense has to many holes in it. If we would of kept Jackson I would of been for it, but now there are to many holes in our defense and he’s one of the best players on defense.

  18. princespanky Says:

It’s been pretty well documented that Talib likely will not go to jail over this. Most people feel he won’t get 4 games either.

In that case I can’t understand trading him. I think he deserves another chance as he was a bit of a sheep in Rah’s old system. The only way this rumor is true is if Schiano already has a feel for him and thinks it’s not going to work out. See Tanard Jackson for the details on that one.

If that is the case then any pick is a good deal and he probably ends up with the Skins or Cowboys.

  19. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Bucbelevr – Unclear where you’re going in that second paragraph, but that’s OK. … Joe’s written many times before about his feelings on anonymous sources. It’s a philosophy, not a whack at reporters or publications’ choices in those matters.

  20. bucfanjeff Says:

So if we could get a 2nd or 3rd for him, see ya, it’s a DB rich draft, especially the first couple days.

  21. Stranger Says:

We wouldn’t get a 2nd or 3rd for him. The most we would get is a conditional 4th or 5th for next year. I would rather we just keep him for the year since he seems to be going along with what the new regime wants.

  22. Brian Says:

There is virtually NO chance that he is traded before the draft. Other teams routinely just wait for the player to be released. If you want to trade the guy, that means you don’t want to pay him and will cut him before the season- that’s the standard operating procedure in the NFL.

If I’m another team, why would I do this now? I can wait for the Bucs to cut him in preseason, or if I’m really desperate, I just wait until after the draft and his trial, then give you a 2013 late rounder instead. Sorry Bucs fans, nothing going to come of this, we have no leverage at all.

  23. 941-Bucs Says:

Don’t be so quick to cancel out that idea. Raheem is already grabbing up what ever we release. I’m sure him and Bruce Allen would want to have “Their Guy” in Talib on their new roster. Remember Allen was the GM when Talib was drafted. Combine that with D. Synder’s form of buying up every available talent lols. I think we could actually get something like a 4th rounder for him.

  24. 941-Bucs Says:

    @ Brian

That is normally true. But with the Bucs i think it has a different Twist. We WILL go into 2012 with Talib and K2 still on the roster. Their Talent alone will keep them with playing time. We are simply seeing if we can get a bargain out of it first. I don’t see them just cutting Talib unless he goes to jail.

  25. Joe Says:

I hope the rumors are true then we can get an extra 2nd and 4th rounder and have ammo to trade back into the first if we wanted. Either way is a win win.

Good Lord, how do you figure that???

Shoot, this guy is looking at a suspension if not jail. Just what demented general manager would cough up a second and fourth round picks for Talib???

Look, Santonio Holmes, a FAR MORE important, better impact player than Talib and the Steelers could only fetch a fifth round pick.

The inflated value some Bucs fans place Talib is simply stunning to Joe.

  26. Macabee Says:

If this rumor is true, and I suspect it will be by the end of the day, then 3 things are likely to happen:

    (1) It will be a limited buyer’s market, meaning there will be only a few with interest and it will be on their terms. Talib is worth more, but the best the Bucs will get is a conditional 5th or 6th round pick because they played the card. They must accept the offer, put up with a disgruntled Talib (which might be dangerous) or cut him.

    (2) The Redskins and Bengals will take that deal in a NY minute. There is no risk in an offer conditioned on Talib’s availability.

(3)The Bucs will pick Morris Claiborne if he’s there or I’ve given them more credit than they deserve up to this point!

  27. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

This week just gets better and better!!

Can’t wait till the team is devoid of the violent thugs and malcontents. Very close, almost there!!!!

  28. Pete Dutcher Says:

This sort of responsible journalism is why I only had a year subscription to PR back in the day.

Remember the days when reporters could not report anything without confirmed sources?

Confidential informants is one thing (and probably more made up than true in most cases), but PR is now quoting unreliable junk.

As to Talib…no one in their right mind would take him until after his suspension, if even then. He may well get so much time in jail he’s too old for a comeback. I personally think he will get off legally, but I still feel Goodell should suspend him a year.

And all of you will agree AFTER we get Claiborne…you know you will.

  29. Macabee Says:

    Pete,

I think you meant irresponsible journalism.

  30. Brian Says:

    @ 941-Bucs

I agree completely that K2 and Talib will be Bucs in 2012, I’m just saying that other teams will be more than happy to wait it out, if they are really desperate for CB, they can just wait us out. Why give up 2012 picks now, when you can give us 2013 picks a few weeks from now? I don’t think we should cut him, but being put on the trade block is often a precursor to being cut.

  31. Pete Dutcher Says:

    Macabee
    Oops…you’re right, lol.

Working on multiple computers gets confusing at times 😉

  32. Snook Says:

    This is a no brainer:

Who’s the guy who traded a 7th round pick for Jake Plummer after Plummer already said he wanted nothing to do with the Bucs?

Yep. Call that GM. Somehow, he’s still a GM somewhere.

  33. Snook Says:

PR has really gone down the toilet. Only good part is that they’re not obsessed with Raheem Morris like this site still is.

  34. Bobby Says:

I don’t believe this is true. The Bucs aren’t going to be shopping Talib before the draft and they know for sure they have Claiborne. This ‘rumor’ was probably put out just for propaganda purposes.

  35. Paul Says:

Its Pooter Report. What do you expect. They do this several times a year. Come up with a totally unsourced off the wall story in order to get their page views up.

  36. Capt. Tim Says:

Snook- yeah- hard to believe that guy is still a GM!

Anyone who watches last years tape, will not want Gino Hayes, Quincy Black, or especially Aqib Talib. He is only considered talented by a few Buc fans.

And normal People are disgusted with a guy threatening old women. Again- no one but a few idiots here think thats cool behavior.

Funny part- its the exact same idiots crying to draft Stumpy Richardson!
Thus- the hilarious torment of the omPa loompas supporters!

  37. Snook Says:

    Bucs say:

“Why would we trade Talib? We need all the corners we can get at this point. Especially since we want Richardson at #5. Why would we need another brain dead cornerback?”

  38. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Thus- the hilarious torment of the omPa loompas supporters!”

    ——

Capt. Tim, you are a lot of things. Hilarious is not one of them.

  39. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Oh, I almost forgot: LMAO

  40. jarrett Says:

capt tim i would trade our first round pick away for you to go post on a saints blog, i would prolly do a herschel walker type deal just so this team could get rid of you as a fan. lmao

  41. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Yes Jarrett, it would be well worth it. I’m going to add a LMAO and and a LOL and any other acronym that Captain Tim and high school girls across the country love to use all the time (even though no one is laughing except them).

  42. bucfat Says:

i cant believe some of the thing you fans wrote on here. Wow. I wish Talib luck.
