Doug Martin Will Reach The Second Round, Bucs

April 14th, 2012

The legitimate football talent evaluators in the media are now lining up behind former Boise State running back Doug Martin as the clear second-best RB in the draft.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has been singing his praises, and former Redskins (when they were great) and Texans general manager Charlie Casserly was on WQYK-AM 1010 with Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski yesterday labeling Martin as his No. 2 back. But Casserly told The Commish he’s certain Martin will reach the second round.

Yes, the Bucs have the fourth pick of the second round.

Presumably, the teams picking before the Bucs in the second round — St. Louis, Indy and Minnesota — won’t touch a running back with those picks. The Rams and Colts are desperate for receivers, and the Vikings have Adrian Peterson and, potentially, could have Trent Richardson by then.

So there’s at least strong chance the Bucs could have a shot at Martin. At 5-9, 223 pounds, Martin is considered to be a complete player with excellent speed but not lightning quick.

Joe’s not sure how well he would complement LeGarrette Blount, but the Bucs need a lot more than a complement. They need a true 1A, versatile back that can carry the load if Blount goes down. They also need to snag a solid role-player back in free agency.

  1. Meh Says:

I don’t think he makes it to the second round. Richardson will come off very early, leaving Martin as best back for the entire rest of the first round. I don’t think he makes it past the Bengals.

  2. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Hoping someone to be there in the 2nd round is a bad way to draft… Martin is no sure thing to be there when the 36th pick comes around regardless of what anybody says.. If Richardson is there at #5 you take him

Joe’s not sure how well he would complement LeGarrette Blount, but the Bucs need a lot more than a complement. They need a true 1A, versatile back that can carry the load if Blount goes down. They also need to snag a solid role-player back in free agency.

This is a funny statement to me because your whole argument for not drafting Richardson is because all we need is a compliment… now your saying we need more than that… make up your mind joe

  3. KD Says:

Casserly said that? In that case it’s almost certain he’s a goner by the second round.

  4. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

New England could grab him as well, they just lost Green-Ellis to the Bengals. i say take TR if hes there but if hes not then the obvious choice is Claibourne. maybe trade next years 2nd and this years 4th to get back into the late part of the 1st and grab Martin. probably not enough to get back int the 1st but if we trade back in and grab Kuechly, and grab an extra 1st more likely a 2nd in the process and use that extra pick to move back in and grab a RB or CB. i hear the 2nd & 3rd rounds are loaded with talent @ those positions. BUC IT IM OUT!!!!

  5. jvato24 Says:

This guy might be better than Ray Rice. I don’t think he makes it to the 2nd round. I would never presume the Rams and the Colts would pass on him. New coaching staffs are unpredictable.

If you are wondering how good he would compliment LGB, YouTube him. This guy is outstanding and explosive.

  6. Macabee Says:

May not matter if the Bucs trade down with the Cowboys and take Felix Jones, their 14th in the 1st, their 2nd and their 4th. All falling within the NFL Draft Value chart at 1700pts for a 5th overall pick.

The Bucs could then take Kuechly, Barron or Brockers at 14. Then get Martin, a CB, WLB, SS, whatever with 2 additional picks.

To be honest, this is not my idea. Read it on another website this AM, but found it interesting but not likely!

  7. Pete Dutcher Says:

Darn it, Joe, I was all set to go get some writing done and you put up another article!

Doug Martin was mentioned on Justin’s show yesterday. I don’t know much about him but after watching a brief video and seeing the way he’s built…he seems like a power running to me.

    Is that an accurate assumption?

If so, I like the thought of him being a Buc…but not at the expense of losing out on a good LB in the second.

I disagree that we need a finesse RB as some say. To me RBs should pound the line so hard they need help to protect against them…and that will open up the pass.

  8. Matt Says:

What about Lamar Miller? Heard he’s electric and a bit like lesean McCoy?

  9. Mr. Patrick Says:

I would be shocked if Martin makes it past Patriots and into the 2nd round. He looks like the real deal and is described as a bigger, stronger, faster, more versatile Ray Rice. Since I dont think TR will be there at #5, if Bucs get Claiborne in 1st round, Martin in 2nd round, and Tank Carder in 3rd round, Bucs fans should jump for joy.

  10. jvato24 Says:

Lamar Miller doesn’t break many tackles at all and is a 1 cut runner and built for zone running game. Something the Bucs most likely won’t be doing.

  11. FlBoy84 Says:

Even if Martin makes it to the 2nd rd, there’s no guarantee he’ll be there when the Bucs pick at #4. With the new draft layout of rd 1 on Thurs and rd’s 2 & 3 on Friday, teams have the overnight to reevaluate players that are left and to work out trades. Don’t have time to research it right now, but if I recall last year there were a boatload of trades. Only 12 more days!!

  12. BucsFanInBoise Says:

Living in Boise I got to see Doug allot the past 4 years. I’m excited about his talent as well as his character. Class guy on and off the field. He’s always shaking hands and kissing babies. Saw him at a bar “he didn’t drink a drop” and had the most humbling conversation with him. If they drafted off character “and we all know the bucs could use some” I would take him in the first. As the only Boise State/Bucs fan in Idaho I would be very happy with this pick.

  13. JT Says:

He also sux as pass protection…

  14. JT Says:

    *at

  15. Capt. Tim Says:

Martin would be a smart pick for his team.
But there will still be plenty of talented RBs in the 5th.
2nd round – I’d like to see either Lavonte David( OLB), or Alphonso Dennard( CB). Two CBS would have us set a key posistions for years to come( DE,DT,Cb)

But Martin wouldn’t be a bad pick- he is very talented. As long as we get a shut down CB in the first.

If we don’t get some CBs, offense won’t see the field enough to matter

  16. reggie t Says:

I doubt they go RB in the 2nd round, in fact besides a tight end in the 3rd or 4th look for all Defense in this draft.

  17. Have A Nice Day Says:

If Mayock says hes good, I believe it.

  18. Alan Bucs Says:

I personally like doug martin’s running style over Trent Richardson, but would be happy with either one. Also like Joe’s idea of picking up a role player ala Darren Sproules (Chris Rainey or Ronnie Hillman) would be good in these roles. That could make our offense absolutely explosive.

  19. Pinnacl3 Says:

    SILENCETHECRITICS is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

“Joe’s not sure how well he would complement LeGarrette Blount, but the Bucs need a lot more than a complement. They need a true 1A, versatile back that can carry the load if Blount goes down. They also need to snag a solid role-player back in free agency.”
This is crazy…If the BUCS need a true 1A RB, then why not have the BEST RB in the draft with the #5 Pick? Too risky of a pick?? Too high of a pick for a RB whose average career spans 3-5 years?? Yet, we should go get a player out of free agency that already has 2-3 years of NFL wear and tear on him????
Make up your mind, “BUCS fans”! We(BUC FANS) have too many holes to think we’re gonna be fixed with one draft pick(#5) and or one draft. If the BUCS were to select Richardson at #5, they could be addressing multiple issues at once. They could be getting that “1A” running back in case Blount goes down. And they could see a SURGE in ticket sales. Defensive wins championships, but OFFENSE sells tickets. With that being said, I’ll be sitting in seats 6 and 7 in Section 147 under the Pirate Ship no matter who WE pick. BUCS, BUCS, BUCS!!!!!!!

  20. Macabee Says:

    HAND,

Be careful. Mayock said ROY Cam Newton would be a bust and no team should go near him in the 1st round!

  21. Que589 Says:

Got to go Lavonte David (LB Nebraska) or Harrison Smith (S Notre Dame) in round 2. Along w/ Claiborne (round 1 pick). This would give us two starters. We need ballers on defense more than a RB. Plus we can get an RB in round 3. I don’t know if there are ballers (starters) on D in this draft into the 3rd round.

  22. Stanglassman Says:

NE drafted two RBs last year in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, doubt they go RB again in the 2nd. I believe they want to develop Vereen and Ridley, that’s why they let the law firm go in FA.

  23. Have A Nice Day Says:

@Macabee no one is right 100% of the time. Mayock is the best “draft guru” around.

  24. Have A Nice Day Says:

If offense sells tickets, how did the Buccaneers sell out the stadium all those years? It certainly wasn’t offense.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

    @ Que589

You would think that should be obvious to most wouldn’t you, but I guess it’s not? It’s so ridiculously obvious where we need the most help.
My concern is that new defensive Head Coaches almost always think they can get more out of the current roster than what the guy before him could so sometimes they ignore gapping holes thinking they can coach guys up. I really hope Schiano isn’t that arrogant. They’ve put so much effort into drafting for the defense at this point, I hope they use this draft to flood the roster on that side of the ball and let camp sort them out.

  26. ben Says:

instead of trying to get someone like ray rice, what if they hold out and try to actually get ray rice, they franchised him this year but he hasnt signed the contract and said he wont be attending team workouts this offseason. only he knows what his desire to be reunited with schiano is.i know they could just franchise him again, i dont know what their salary cap situation is, just throwing something out there from left field. its unrealistic to expect them to fill every hole in free agency and the draft in one offseason, esp when you have a guy that already averages 4.6 a carry, i know alot of people say blount cant catch he cant block but he hasnt had an offseason with us last season or the season before cause we got during the season. i do expect them to pick up an Rb in either the middle rounds or the second pool of free agents after the draft and cuts

  27. Bobby Says:

Been talking about Martin since before the combine. If he is there in round 2 I’m betting we take him. He will be the #1 back and Blount will rotate in. Martin will be better than Ray Rice.

  28. bucbelevr Says:

??? With Martin largely recognized at the 2nd best RB, if Richardson goes at 5 to Bucs at latest, 27 MORE TEAMS, or picks, in the 1st round, and 3 more at tope of 2nd WON’T allow the 2nd best RB to come all the way to the Bucs at 36?!?….

  29. bucbelevr Says:

Ultimately…………..Martin doesn’t go at pick 36 overall, no matter which team, who reasonably thinks that?!?

  30. bucbelevr Says:

    Giants……..pick 32. Martin goes there.

  31. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Cleveland will take Trent Richardson it is said, and IF he makes it past the Giants, he will be an outstanding player for Tampa.
This guy blocks, catches passes, and hits the line hard.
I have seen him run out the clock on several teams, and break their wills.
    Great Post Joe, as usual.

  32. Thomas2.2 Says:

Martin would be the starter, Blount would be the backup – compliment.

If T Rich is gone, we would do well with Martin.

  33. gotbbucs Says:

Yes, Trent Richardson and Doug Martin are the only servicable RB’s in this draft.

  34. Architek Says:

I agree with you Joe. Martin would be an ideal selection because he is well-rounded and still explosive. Every team should have a 1A RB in this league.

  35. RustyRhino Says:

I’m in Ft. Myers area until wed, wish I could go to the draft party Joe. But I will be heading back to flowery branch Ga on wed. It would be nice to be there when we do what were going to do with our #5 pick. Who will be there and who won’t. It will be exciting to watch with other Buccaneer fans who make it. Even Thomas would be cool to meet. And have face to face conversations about the buccaneer nation.

  36. Jordon Says:

I think the Browns take Blackmon at #4 and then Martin with #22. That gives the Bucs a shot at TR @ #5…then I think they go CB or LB (maybe Zach Brown or Stephon Gilmore) in Round 2.

  37. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Thanks for the sentiment Rusty.

  38. Miguel Grande Says:

@Pinnacl3 “With that being said, I’ll be sitting in seats 6 and 7 in Section 147 under the Pirate Ship no matter who WE pick. BUCS, BUCS, BUCS!!!!!!!”

Holy Cow!! How much do you weigh?

  39. Bucs55 Says:

Im so tierd Of hearing bout Martin to the Bucs in the second round they need to concentrate on there defence and gettin a linebacker to replace Black in the Second round like Davis or Wagner I think wagner Is Goin to be a Star in the Making Comming out of Utah State they should get a running back in the 3rd and im supprise no one is talking out Robert Turbin this kid is a Stud . runs a Good time Can Catch and has the speed to out run somone and the strenght to run true somone i think hes the complete back quote me on this i think he will be a much better pro the Martin ….

  40. buCncRaZy Says:

If the Bucs want Martin they will have to trade back into the 1st round to her him.. If Dominik could find away to pull off getting Kuechly and Martin A +

  41. Bobby Says:

@bucbelevr…..smart draft experts believe he’ll make it to the second round. Most teams DO NOT take RB’s in the first round. The value is not there. They have short careers and it’s too easy to find good value in RB’s in latter rounds. The Giants know that all too well as they had Brandon Jacobs (4th rd pick) and Ahmad Bradshaw (7th round). You look for them to spend a first round pick on RB? Who reasonably would think he’ll go in the first round??

  42. Bobby Says:

If Ray Rice didn’t go until the late second round why would anybody think Martin is going to go in the first round? Now, it COULD happen but I would be very surprised. Look at all the injuries associated with RB’s that have gone in the first round lately. I just think teams are beginning to realize the risk/reward is too high unless it is a talent like Trent Richardson and you desperately need a RB. Passing teams generally do not take 1st round RB’s. They usually don’t need elite talent at that position. Look at New England, the Packers, The Giants. Serviceable RB’s but mostly just to keep the defense honest. They are not run first teams.

    .

Not really. You are forgetting RBs that went undrafted this year and last, RBs on practice squads, CFL and AFL guys that never had a chance to prove themselves in the NFL…there are options available. And with the dominant Oline, it won’t take much of a RB to share the role…especially since we’ll be a PASS FIRST TEAM.

    @bucbelevr…..smart draft experts believe…

    .

There is no such thing as a “smart” draft expert. Mayock is about the most accurate, but even he is doing nothing more than guess…and we all do that.

  45. Pete Dutcher Says:

You know…even contemplating Richardson if Claiborn os on the board is a joke. There is zero chance the Bucs take Richardson over Claiborne. Zero chance.

You guys are whistling dixie, lol.

  46. Bobby Says:

@Pete Dutcher….saying that there is ‘zero’ chance the Bucs take Richardson over Claiborne is a ridiculous statement. I’d say it’s very possible if Richardson is there at #5, although I certainly hope they take Claiborne instead. Claiborne is the ‘need’ pick but Richardson will not be easy to pass up for a team that wants to pound the rock. It could go either way. If it were any other RB I’d agree but with the potential this guy has and our O-line they just may decide he is the better value. Zero chance…..LOL! Now that’s just stupid.

  47. Josh Says:

I love scotch. Scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes down, down into my belly. I can’t wait for the draft. Drafty, drafty, draft. Whatever goes down, down into Bucs history we have no say. It is what it is.

  48. Garv Says:

I don’t think there would be many fans disappointed in Martin in round 2 if Richardson doesn’t go 1.

Thank goodness we have less than two weeks to go…..

  49. Nate Says:

We dont even need a running back.. all this talk is nonsense.. we need linebackers and safety now.. I will be laughing my butt off if we dont even draft a running back…

  50. passenger27 Says:

Morris Claiborne rd.1 Mychal Kendricks rd.2 Lamicheal James rd.3

  51. passenger27 Says:

Oh yeah and Joe Martinek in the 7th already knws the offense or atleast some elements and is strong as a pass catcher and in picking up the blitz

  52. bucs55 Says:

Trade and Get a 4rd pick and pick up robert Turbin I think he will be showing that he is the second Best running back in the Draft

  53. JT Says:

Tom Brady was not drafter till the 5th round. Nobody should draft a QB in the 1st simply because of that fact…

  54. BucBuckeye Says:

Everyone is selling this “the RB position is a diminished role in the NFL” line…just trust ’em again and see what happens…

You’ll be left holding the bag like Gruden was when he waited till the 2nd round…because nobody was taking them…we ended up with the bag over the head for that…Dexter Jackson…and the coach and the GM who made that “strategic” move to wait and gamble that their guy would be available in the next round…lost their jobs for moves like that….

I’d be willing to bet Martin WON’T be there in the 2nd…

  55. Mark Says:

I think many of the folks posting here need to go back and watch our AWFUL defense last year. The worst I have ever seen on any team I have rooted for in 50 + years. Just awful. Our secondary, our linebackers and our pass rush suck beyond words. More power to Shiano and crew if they think they can motivate this lackluster bunch but I wouldn’t put a nickle on much improvement from any of them.

  56. Mike W Says:

Joe: love the site!! Although there is a possibility of martin falling to the Buc’s; Casserley predicts him going to the Rams 2 spots ahead of the Buc’s in his mock draft.

  57. st augustine Says:

sorry to post this here but just wanted to tell joe “THANKS” for letting us know Rock is on this morning (Sunday). i had no idea. he’s good people. thanks again and go bucs!

  58. hamilton Says:

lamar miller from um is a better player.

  59. BigMacAttack Says:

I hope Joe will post Schiano’s comments from PFT about McCoy. Thomas will officially hate Schiano now.

  60. teacherman777 Says:

    @ McCabee

You are dead on. Mike Mayock should have been FIRED after incorrectly evaluating Cam Newton.

Who is perhaps the most unique player in the NFL since Bo Jackson.

Anyone who was wrong about Cam, should never be listened to again!

Cam will become the player of the decade!

    War Eagle mofo!!

  61. teacherman777 Says:

    Second round pick is HUGE!

We should not waste it on a RB. We have needs at LB, Safety, and maybe even another CB.

Ideal situation: Dontaa Hightower or Mark Barron drop to round 2.

    What if. What if?

Janoris Jenkins was available in round 2.

Do you miss out on the chance to get Morris Claiborne and Janoris Jenkins in the same draft? They are the two best covers in the draft.

I, for one, would not complain if we took a risk on him.

I am getting so excited about this draft. Our first 3 picks have huge implications for the future of this team.

I just hope we focus on defense, and worry about RB depth in Free agency and let Blount work during his “contract year.”

  62. BigMacAttack Says:

I’ll believe Cam Newton is for real if he does it again this year. Teams have a lot of film on him and his OC gimmicks. Cam runs too much and takes big risks doing so, which one of those could easily end up in a torn ACL. Once a QB like Cam loses his legs, he will never be the same. I find Cam to be cocky and I look for that chip to get knocked off his shoulder this season and rammed down his throat. I’m not a big fan of Cam and his TD antics. He has a big bulls eye on his chest.

  63. Nate Says:

Lets just draft all defense in this draft please!!!!! NO offense… Teach blount in this offseason and roll the dice.. If it dont work out then maybe ray rice will be a free agent next year we can sign him…Mark is right our defense sucked soo bad last year.. Lets fix it!

  64. teacherman777 Says:

    @BigMacAttack

Athletes at this level must have an insane amount of confidence and competitiveness. I believe Cam has both.

I watched his entire season at Auburn. He is a fighter.

His TD antics are just his way of sayin “F-Off” to all the haters and doubters who were saying he wasnt smart enough to play in the NFL!!

  65. ColoradoBuc Says:

“Doug Martin will reach the Bucs in the second round”

    -No he won’t

  66. Cmurda Says:

@ Pete. I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks we will be a pass first team. Schiano likes hard nosed football but don’t think for a second we wont be passing vertically. So excited to see us away from the west coast system of B.S. Mike Sullivan from the Giants, the team that just won the Superbowl with a terrible running attack all year, if that’s any indication.

  67. Ghibz Says:

We should draft S Harrisson Smith ND in the second round ! He is an hard hitter and we need That kind of Guy !! We can have RB in FA or later in the draft…
    GOOOOOOO BUUUUUUUCS !!!!!!!!!!

  68. princespanky Says:

There is a 0% chance that Doug Martin falls into the second round he is very highly thought of by teams looking to secure an all around back. We should take the BPA in the second of whoever does fall into the second round.

Why no talk about David Wilson? He is a burner and a high character guy. I am not so good with Polk or LMJ but Miller could be serviceable as a pure speed guy.

Harrison Smith is not an instant starter, he will need some work on special teams before he gets in any games. There could be some good value at corner and backer in the early second so I don’t see second as set in stone but based upon the tone of the draft.
