Mo’ Support For Mo Claiborne

Joe has made his feelings well known about who Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik should draft with the fifth overall pick.
That would be LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne. With Ronde Barber surely playing his final season with the Bucs and troubled Aqib Talib in the final year of his contract, there will be a massive hole(s) at cornerback (yes, Joe knows Dominik signed Eric Wright).
Facing Drew Brees, Matty Ice and Cam Newton six times a year, that’s like playing with fire not having a competent secondary, almost begging for six losses before the season kicks off.
It seems Pat Yasinskas of ESPN is of the same mind. Answering a query from a reader in a recent NFC South chat, Yasinskas too believes Claiborne is a must-get.
Jaryd (Ashland, Va): I think it is absurd all the people clamoring for Trent Richardson to be a Buccaneer when there are more pressing needs in the Secondary and with the Linebackers…You will be able to find a very good complement for Blount in a later round. None of the best teams in the league are powered by a dominate running back but a running back by committee approach.
Pat Yasinskas: No argument here. I say take Claiborne at No. 5. You can always get a running back a little later.
If the Bucs had a solid secondary (much less just a below average linebacker unit), Joe could somehow be persuaded to draft Trent Richardson.
Problem is, the Bucs have massive holes on defense in a division with potent if not lethal offenses. The Bucs simply do not have the luxury of drafting for any offensive position with the fifth overall pick much less a running back when history demonstrates clearly there is much better bang for the buck grabbing a running back later in the draft.
Besides, the Bucs already have a running back. His name is LeGarrette Blount.

Take Claiborne or trade down and get a LB. Blount can be replaced by a fourth or later round RB that would probably be an improvement.

Charley Casserly said on NFL Network that Claiborne is not in the same league as Patrick Peterson. They showed their stats at LSU, and what jumps out at you is how many more tackles Peterson had (and he had many more passes defended). Not to mention Peterson is an elite returner, Claiborne isn’t even close to elite. Just passing along some info, sorry to break up the Claiborne to Tampa party.

For some reason I don’t see Schiano passing on Richardson if he is available. If Browns don’t take Richardson he will probably be a Buc.
I wasn’t worried about Claibornes wonderlic score till I read his tweets.

You can count on the Vikings and Browns to do something stupid with their picks which will leave us with the luxury of selecting the best player in the draft, Matt Kalil. Our defense will benefit, because our offense will chew up the clock and score touchdowns.

@have a nice day Thank you!! This is what i have been trying to say our offense wont even be able to get on the field if the other team offense is chewing up the clock. Also please can we not say the stupidest thing ever and say “draft kalil” please!!! That would be the dumbest thing we could do………..We just spent big money on a OL which is great but were not wasting our #5 pick with a position that is already established. We have needs people!!! We have a horrible defense just watch last seasons highlights!!!!

Although we will never be confused with the 85 Bears, I don’t think our defense will be nearly as bad as it was last year. I like Raheem, but even I have to admit he did an awful job as a defensive coordinator. I expect a noticeable difference by that fact alone (that we have a different DC). We were also destroyed with injuries, and we had little to no depth. I have a feeling we won’t be so unfortunate with injuries, and we already have better depth. We were middle of the league on defense until we lost GMC. He must stay healthy this year. On offense, we pretty much sucked when healthy. We didn’t score 30 all year! That’s consistently bad. I just don’t think it’s a no-brainier that we must go defense. We need help all-around.

Let’s just get to the draft so we can stop the speculation. Being at pick #5, there is hardly any blame that can be bestowed upon the Bucs no matter what they do. Any logical argument could be made for either TR or mo. All I know is that with a stacked line and suddenly intimidating WR corp, LeGarrette will have a lot to live up to if we don’t pick up Richardson.

Are you seriously in China???…Cool. Legarrette sucks. But cool that you’re in China following this. Hopefully TRich at #5 if he’s there, but like some others have said, hard to find any blame whomever Bucs take at #5, if they stay there. It’s just that, with OLine changes this year, to reward them, and Buc Fans, for years to come, TRich would certainly, be the most consistent way, without much effort, of game planning on offense, and letting the Pro’s be Pro’s.

Bucbelevr……..you’re an idiot if you think Blount sucks. If not for him, we would’ve had NO offense last year at all! If he hadn’t had a dumb_ss as his OC last year and actually gotten more carries, his stats would’ve been much better. Oh, and he would’ve been better if hadn’t had one of the worst teams in history around him. The guy was a beast last year!
Funny how so many people blast Blount, but not Freeman…..when he was the one that totally sucked last year (and I like Freeman).

I’m from WPB, Florida but I’m living in a city called Nanjing. Actually watched all the horrendous games last year online at even more horrendous times (12 hours difference over here). But dealing with Blount, the man has his first full offseason with the Bucs to cure whatever woes he may have to be an elite all-around back. I love the guy (how could you not go crazy for that run against the Packers?!) and now he has a coaching staff to foster whatever talent he has. The key will be Josh Freeman and his returning to form as well as the defense who can make sure these two stay on the field as long as possible. Like I said, TR would be a fantastic compliment and the defense as a whole was nothing but embarassing. Either one would work, but don’t dismiss Blount just yet.

Why do people like have a nice day feel that by taking the second best cover corner in the draft with the 5th pick will dramatically improve the Buc’s defense? It won’t! Taking TR will give the bucs a offensive idenity and quite possibly the least desirable team defenses want to see on their schedule. This is Offensive NFL football now day’s, may as well have one of the best…The defense, well you cak possibly trade up to the lower 1st and get the best cover corner in the draft in Janoris Jenkins or stay put and reap from the deep CB class. The Buc,s Plan is to get to the QB’s HEAD!! opps, sorry..I mean pressure the signal caller and cause turnovers, an aggressive style of Defense. Drafting the second best cover corner that high will not significantly change things!… Its seems most of you people just want to remain status quo, same ole Bucs..good Defense and a don’t screw it up Offense blah blah blah!!! I prefer a dynamic offense with skill all around a Franchise qb and a Defense that is aggressive to the QB and get the ball back to that potent Offense…

43.75% of the starting RBs last year were drafted in the 1st round. 37.49% of the starting RBs were drafted in rounds 2-7.
35.93% of the starting CBs last year were drafted in the 1st round. 51.55% of the starting CBs were drafted in rounds 2-7.
If you just want to focus on the 2nd round as seemingly most think we will go RB then CB or CB then RB, 12.5% of the starting RBs were drafted in the 2nd round whereas 26.56% of the starting CBs were drafted in that round.
24.99% of both the starting RBs and CBs were drafted in rounds 3-7.
Seems to me you have a better shot at getting a starting caliber CB in the middle to late rounds than you do a starting caliber HB. As well as you have a better shot at getting a starting caliber HB in the 1st than you do a starting caliber CB.
So basically, these people that act like RBs are easy and CBs impossible to find after the 1st round.. The numbers tell a different story.

That’s what we thought when we passed on Adrian Peterson for a hole in our defense. I keep reading you can find a RB later in the draft and yea that’s true and all but you can also find any other positions later in the draft. I’ll be fine with Claiborne or Richardson (preferably Richardson), whoever Tampa Bay picks, they probably know something we don’t.

Here’s why, you hack. Warrick Dunn, on a 1 1/2 yard carry tackled for a loss, on any given day, is 10 times the man, that Legarrette Blount is. Men, don’t throw punches, at fans, after football games in COLLEGE., Men…..don’t bad mouth, coaches, and THE TEAM WORK ETHIC of anyone drafted. Men, at RB, find a way NOT TO FUMBLE, all the EFFING TIME, when your only purpose is to CARRY the ball, NOT LAY it on the turf, FOR THE OTHER TEAM to pick it up. That’s one of your ONLY JOBS, as running back, in the NFL–where you get paid a relative fortune——-CARRY THE BALL, KEEP THE BALL, and shut his mouth, humble himself, grow a pair……and WORK for it, then EARN his salary at 540,000 a year.
That’s WHY Warrick Dunn, Mike Alstott, Earnest Graham……..give Bucs’ running backs a good, hard, solid name as running backs, and punk-ass schlepps like LeGarrette Blount, are LUCKY to have what they have, FOR NOW.

Claiborne seems alright, but he really doesn’t seem top notch. I don’t want a CB in the 1st round unless he’s gonna be another Ronde or an Ed Reed/Revis caliber player. We already spent big money on a mediocre CB (Wright).

@bucbelevr……not every player can be a complete angel. And Blount is not a bad person. So what if he punched a guy? Big deal. That’s just one thing. Bad mouthing coaches? I’m pretty sure Sapp and a bunch of other Bucs did that too. Show me where Blount has bad mouthed Raheem or Schiano. I’m waiting.
A lot of great running backs have had fumbling problems in the past. Like Tiki Barber. Does he suck? Brandon Jacobs used to have fumbling problems as well.
You actually don’t think he EARNED his $540,000 salary last year? You obviously didn’t watch him play. I thought he did pretty well considering the train wreck that this team was last season.
Lucky to have what he has? He should be getting paid much more!! Quincy Jane is the one who’s lucky to have what he has.
Seems like the things you brought up were his character and his “fumbling” issues. You left out the part where he can actually “RUN THE BALL” and knock people on their arse!
Blount will be much better this year. He’ll have an OC that will actually give him more carries and a much better offensive line!

You just can’t reason with some of the ‘intellectually challenged’ fans around here. Blount has arguably been the most valuable, productive player for the Bucs the past 2 years, besides a kicker. If Blount were white and dropped to his knees in prayer every time a camera was near, he’d be worshipped like a god around here, hell, if only he were white he’d be Alstott 2.0, with much more speed.

Tampa is in a great position at number 5 to draft Kalil if he is still around, or trade down for more picks. I agree with Casserly about Claiborne, what future elite NFL receiver has he shut down ?

We need to draft mo with the 5th overall pick. I understand how we can look at trich because he is such an nfl ready back with all the tools to be a pro bowl back. But mo fills a huge need and is a safer pick at #5. We already have Blount who is a 1000 yard back. Last year was a fluke (even though per carry rushing and receiving he faired way better than credit given) because he was underutilized by a coaching staff that didn’t know what they were doing, an unmotivated line, and ineffective passing game along with predictable play calling. With the offensive fire power that has and will continue to develop in the NFC south and one of the worst defensive teams in the league, we need to draft defense right where it’s needed. Draft cb, lb, safety. Get 2 lbs and possibly another corner in the later rounds after mo in the first. We can sit on a running back until round 3 because this draft is deep with complementary backs for our stud in Blount. There are also good lbs in round two that would be wise to draft. Don’t forget how much potential offensive firepower we already have on the roster including the offseason additions. Then think about how many additions have been added to the d which was by far our worst part of the team last year. Also why not give Blount a shot to stay on the field on third down. I think he can be a huge force when used correctly and MOTIVATED which I think schiano will apply/demand

People want to act like a learning disability will not effect a rookie in his journey to becoming a successful professional, but if you get past the politically correct nonsense of pretending everyone is equal, the truth is that a learning disability is a substantial disadvantage. A player with a learning disability will have to work twice as hard and twice as long in order to get equal results as a player without a learning disability. I’m not saying a person with a learning disability can’t be great, but it takes a special person with strong character and work ethic. All I know, is if we take “MoMo” with the 5th pick of the draft, we better be 100% sure that he has the character and work ethic to always work harder than everyone else. Otherwise he is destined to never live up to the expectations of the 5th overall pick of the draft.

(AS I’VE BEEN SAYING)………… You all should read the post just now on PFT about “the Dolphins and Tannehill at the 8th pick”.
The Bucs, will be in PRIME position 2 weeks from now especially, on being a suitor (if TRich is not there) for the Fins to trade up to get Tannehill. They need him, need some splash, even if not for next year, and they won’t get Barkley, next year.

Draft Kalil. Imagine an OL with 4 pro bowlers on it. Lagarrette will be 4 yards down field before anyone can even lay a hand on him. The only reason he fumbles is that he refuses to go down and while he’s dragging two tacklers a third tries to rip the ball out. Maybe he should just fall to the turf at the lightest contact like Michael Pittman. I might be old school but I kind of like a tough SOB at the running back position. The kind of guy that might knock you out if you dance around in his grill. Maybe, we ought to give him a try at middle linebacker.
He did not lead the team in fumbles by the way.
Imagine LaMichael James on a screen pass running behind Matt Kalil and Davin Joseph as they flatten linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks. They won’t even be able to see him as he darts around behind their devastating blocks.
Imagine Josh Freeman standing unpressured in the pocket for 8 or 9 seconds as he goes through his progressions and calmly selects a wide open receiver. The DL will quit trying to rush and just try to time their jumps to hopefully deflect a pass. That’s when Josh’s height will really pay off.
It seems to me that we drafted a cornerback (Talib) and a running back (Cadillac) in the 1st round recently and it didn’t work. Barber was a 3rd round pick. We did draft an OL (Joseph) and he’s a perennial Pro Bowler. Kalil is the best tackle since Tony Boselli and a future Hall of Famer. He’s a LeRoy Selmon for the offense.

If we miss on a starting Corner back and the Judge sentences against Talib we are screwed with or with out Richardson plain and simple.
CB must be the pick. We have no worry of Blount being unable to play, he just may not play the way some people want. But if we don’t have someone who can fill in Talib’s shoes it wont matter.

For argument’s sake, I’ll give you the fact that Blount is going to immediately be an elite, all-purpose back that stops fumbling and can convert short yardage (because that was obviously 100% coaching, even though he struggled with some of those things in college as well). If we were to lose Blount to an injury (a virtual guarantee in today’s NFL matched with his running style), then what? We will turn the backfield over to a late round rookie and Madu. EG probably won’t be here, remember? Let’s say we draft LaMichael James, anyone think he’s an every down back? If you do, I suggest you quickly get your head examined. With Richardson, he would be capable of carrying the load until Blount were able to return. If TR went down, Blount could probably do the same (because it’s all coaching, right). You are living in la la land if you think we won’t need depth, especially the way we are probably going to run the ball.

To those thinking it is impossible to get a starting-caliber CB anywhere but pick #5, I suggest you re-read the post by Bones Mahoney. Even if Claiborne is as good as Patrick Peterson, I’m not sure he has a top 5 pick value. Would you give up that pick to have him? I don’t think I would, especially if you take away him as a returner.

This kind of crap always happens as the draft approaches. People change minds, all of a sudden phantom injuries become concerns, phantom flaws from prospects come to light etc. If you want to get good draft analysis, listen before April. Everything now is smokescreens and garbage. MO is unequivocally the best corner out there. Far and away better than the next best. T-Rich, likewise. If we didn’t already have a very good RB, I would be on the Trent bus. Our secondary is a mess. LB’s and secondary are without question our biggest holes. MO is where it is at. If T-Rich is there and we pick him, I’m ok with it though.

I agree Claiborne makes the most sense, especially playing in the NFL South. I would also take Kalil over Richardson if the situation arose, it would make much more football sense. RB’s are a dime a dozen. I like Ron Brooks also. He would be superior on special teams and he is a hitter. It wouldn’t surprise me for him to potentially be a nice safety but that would be a project. 4th or 5th round seems reasonable for him and I would like to see us consider him.

with all your talk about needing depth… You forgot to include RB. All we have is Blount and Madu! We have multiple backups at CB that have started/played in games already. We are in dire need of a RB and if we have the chance to draft an elite talent in TR it would be dumb to pass on him.
As much as everyone wants to say we need CB more the fact is we really need another good RB more. Its better to go with the closest thing to a sure thing with TR then “take a shot” at a later round RB. The drop off from TR to the next best back is much bigger then the drop off from MC to the next CB… TR may be the only RB taken in the 1st rd… There could be 3 or more CB’s taken in the 1st, leaving another 2-3 good CB prospects in the 2nd.

I’ve grown weary of hitting the repeat button on this same topic. So I will tinr my efforts towards a bay area team that is playing and FREAKINF SWEPT THE DAMN YANKEES TO START THE SEASON!!!! Go Rays! and keep it up. Saw Friday’s game at the Trop as well as Saturdays. Friday was the perfect way to start the season, as well as the whole weekend.

I see a lot of people who want Richards calling everyone who diagrees all sorts of names or mocking them.
To me, people who do this are showing the true color of ignorance. People of ignorance always resort to this tactic.
Here’s a news flash…none of us make the final decision. So why attack one another? The plain and simple thing is that most people are thinking with their emotions instead of using logic and paying close attention to the moves that the Bucs have made…both recently and in years past.
Joe has it right for the first and second pick. Beyond that we will see. It could go several ways.
