Blount Doesn’t Want To Play With Richardson

Another wise Bucs fan joins Joe in not wanting the Schiano-Dominik, two-headed monster to draft Trent Richardson later this month.
That Bucs fan would be LeGarrette Blount.
Blount was kind enough to express his opposition to CBSSports.com’s Will Brinson during the unveiling of the Bucs’ new jersey today in New York. “I would definitely not be happy with that pick,” Blount said.
If Blount were carrying his political correctness manual, he would have told Brinson that he wants the Bucs to draft the best players they can get no matter who they are. But Blount kept it refreshingly real — and every coach knows bell cow running backs hate sharing carries.
However, Joe hopes Blount realizes that competition is a great thing, the Bucs desperately need another talented running back, and his new offensive coordinator is a guy from a system that used two and three running backs effectively.

Blount keeps it real. Simple economics of a top 5 pick. If Bucs draft TR, Legarrette’s value is diminished or he’s out all together. He wants the rock so he can put up yards and get paid. He knows it doesn’t’ hurt if Bucs win along the way with him as their #1, something that simply won’t happen if Dominique call Richardson on draft day.

There is nothing wrong with his comments. He wants to be the main guy. He also knows if they draft a ‘talented’ RB, he gets replaced.
If he has confidence in his abilities, there is nothing to worry over. After all, he is a veteran in this league.

No player at any position wants their team to spend a 1st round pick on their position. Usually that means you are on the way out. I don’t care if they were able to clone Jim Brown and bring him in, if the defense doesn’t get fixed any rb will be sitting on the bench out of the game plan by the middle of the 2nd quarter. Rb is a luxury right now, lb and cb are necessities.

Tampa already has 2 good running backs, Richardson is a luxury we can’t afford.
Besides, Cleveland is most likely going to replace Hillis with him anyway, so get used to it.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say he’s a “moron,” but the correct response is “Bring on the competition, because I know no matter what, I am and will be this team’s best back.” His response reeks of insecurity, not necessarily immaturity. Even the best of players should know that the best response is to turn apparent slights into motivation. Sorry, but positions are earned. If he doesn’t want him here, it’s only because Blount knows deep down he’s on thin ice following his lukewarm season. And I can assure you that such an attitude won’t endear him any more to the new coaching regime.

Richardson is good, but with are D giving up so many points i would go for fixing that. Blount had a bad year cause they abandon the run cause we were always playing from behind. Coach Schiano will make him an all around back. Our needs well what I believe are SS to replace Sean Jones/ MLB so you can put Foster in his comfort zone and CB to replace Barber with in the next 2 years cause lets face it he’s not coming back in 2014 lol. When you have 3 to4 WR lining up you want 3 solid CBs having Talib and Wright is good wish we could get more out of Biggers or Lewis. Then we could get Dont’a Hightower in the first not at 5,but trade to about mid round and take him. Kind of hope we get Fletcher for a 1 year contract.

Tired of the argument that current winning teams don’t have a first round RB.
I think the Saints had Bush on the roster when they won the Superbowl.
That was only a couple of years ago. They spent a pretty high pick on that RB, as I recall. The Steelers drafted a first round RB in 2008 in Mendenhall. It didn’t knock them out of the playoffs.
Chances are, the Browns will take Richardson and eliminate him from our possible choices, but the fact of the matter is that top-flight shutdown corners are no guarantee for playoff success either.
Ask the Eagles.

If Blount doesn’t want the competition to be the feature back, he needs to work on becoming a more complete player. I think most analysts would say that Richardson is a much better blocker and receiver out of the backfield than Blount, and he doesn’t put the ball on the ground that much. I think Blount can be a very effective runner, but to be an ELITE player at the tailback position he is going to have to show he can grow in these other areas. I still say take Richardson or Claiborne at #5, whichever one is still available, and if it IS Richrdson, LB should use this as an opportubity to push himself to get better so he can get his big contract next year!

@Justafan Steelers have an amazing defense. They can afford to run run run as their defense is good at getting off the field. The bucs are not at all.
Saints drafted bush to be a passing threat and returner. He was a horrible bust for them in the regards of a #2 draft pick. Lets not act as if Bush is the reason they went to the superbowl. They had Brees who is one of the best if not the best in the league and a defense that made turnovers and tried to end careers.

Richardson or Claiborne, the Bucs need one of the two, I don’t really care which one it is, so long as RB is addressed in one of the first two rounds (or maybe round three is LaMichael James is available).
Blount needs to work on his pass protection so he can stay on the field and reduce his fumbling. This isn’t a new perspective, but it needs to happen. If Richardson is drafted, let the two compete and go from there.
However, if Claiborne is the guy, and he just might be as he fills an immediate need and with everything from the coach talk about pounding the rock to the Wonderlich score of 4, the smokescreens could be in full effect, the team needs, I repeat, NEEDS to have a viable number two behind Blount. No more Lumpkins.

1. Trent Richardson, RB – LeGarrette Blount isn’t the sharpest light bulb in the tool shed, as Emmitt might say. He can’t catch the ball, and he doesn’t understand pass protection schemes. There’s a reason the coaching staff doesn’t use him in passing situations. He’s just completely lost, and it doesn’t help that he fumbles the ball at every opportunity.

T-Rich/Claiborne is hotly debated because most of the anti-T-Rich/Claiborne/Kuechly faction would “never draft a RB that high” or say “T-Rich is no AP” or “if they’re both there, Claiborne is a no-brainer b/c of need”. All these points are imminently debatable.
Until recently, the assumption has always been that they’d both be there @5. Now that T-Rich’s stock has risen, the anti-T-Rich/Claiborne/Kuechly guys have amended their argument to include “well, he’s not going to be there anyway”…which is completely hilarious to me because it undercuts the previous arguments.

And someone wanna tell me, where THE HELL the Saints are getting this cap space to do this?!?! Since it’s public knowledge they have 1.4 million in room before the Hawthorne signing. And they have to get Brees done?! Even signing bonuses (in cash) count against future years cap when distributed as such. And they will still have dead money when they cut Vilma!

To all the idiots who can’t read, Blount didn’t say he was against us getting a RB. He just doesn’t want Richardson here/1st rounder on a RB. I don’t blame him! He knows he’s instantly going to be the favorite.
The last thing we want to do is make Blount mad and then he requests a trade. Then we’ll still only have 1 good back on the roster even if we draft Richardson!
Usually when someone has at least one good RB (like Blount) on the roster, they’re not gonna take a RB in the 1st round. So why are we? Yes, we know “competition” is great guys. But if it’s just gonna make a RB disgruntled, one who’s already proven himself as a productive player for us, what’s the point?
When you invest a high 1st rounder on a guy like T-Rich, he’s GOING to be the feature back and a huge part of the offense for the team he goes too. That also means that you don’t feel very good about the position if you take a RB over all of the other bigger needs we have in the 1st. James or Martin would be the wiser pick in the 2nd round.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I think what really bothers me about it is that it shows a selfishness on the part of Blount. If (and that’s still a big “if”) Richardson is the best player available, he would be the one to help us the most, as in help us win games. Football is the ultimate team game, and all that really matters is wins and losses. So to me it says that Blount doesn’t really care about the team winning, he just wants to be the man. Now I know there are hundreds of players in the league that probably have the same feelings, but that doesn’t make it right. If we draft Richardson, Blount will still get plenty of carries, and I just about guarantee you his yards per carry average will increase. He will be fresh, yet the defense will not be. The chances of both Richardson and Blount playing all 16 games is next to nothing (just reality of the NFL), so he will have the opportunity to be the man. Man up and be the best you can be, and don’t worry about the other guy.
Also, I must have missed the part where he is Walter Payton and he has the right to complain about who we draft and don’t draft. How about this: learn the playbook, learn to block, learn to not fumble, learn to catch, run for consecutive 1000 yard seasons, then complain. In two years, he’s had 1 1000 yard season (barely), so it’s not like he’s Adrian Peterson. 1000 yards for a RB is not a very big deal anymore, especially when he was the only legit RB we had last year (after EG got hurt). He has not earned the right to make statements like this. I would expect major damage control coming out of his camp really soon, which is the right thing to do. It’s just very disappointing that it came to that. Hopefully he can learn from his mistake. I mean, it’s not like he scored a 4 on the wonderlic, so he is capable of learning.

It doesn’t matter what Blount thinks. Nevertheless, I like that he doesn’t want Trent here and he’s honest about it. Look, this can be interpreted many different ways and naturally, you will slant it for or against Blount whichever side of the fence you are on. I think LGB is a feature bank. He’s a cow-bell type, but he has to be willing to improve and learn. Way too much is being made of his absence when Schiano said LGB contacted him and let him know of a conflict. The Wonderlic is worthless. Hell, Ryan Leaf scored a 30! The QB average is 24. Brett Farve scored a 22. Dan Marino and Terry Bradshaw both scored a 15.
Don’t even sweat the scores. The wonderlic is only a gauge of how well someone can pass a written test and doesn’t hold any relevancy to anything else in life.

All those scores you brought up are about 5 times higher than Claiborne! You can bring up all the examples you want, but until you show me someone else with a freaking 4, it doesn’t prove much. Again, I totally agree with you that it shouldn’t eliminate him as a candidate to be drafted. That would be dumb. However, it is definitely cause for concern. How can you possibly argue that? When you invest millions of dollars on someone, you have to explore red flags like this. Hell, I would be concerned that he can’t even read (that sounds like a joke or I’m teasing him, but it’s really not). I could get a 4 if the damn test was in Chinese. I’m sure Dominik (and every other GM in the league) will explore more into this. That’s all I am really asking, but please stop pretending as if it is irrelevant.

@Hawaiian It has no bearing whatsoever. Some people test better than others. The format of the questions do not represent everyday problems in a verbiage that is not typical to the average person. The wonderlic is like the combine: you have to train for it. Just like SATs, MCats, ACTs, PCATs etc. Just because you haven’t trained for something doesn’t make you less intelligent. It just means you didn’t train for that.
Training for a wonderlic is totally worthless as as it only teaches you how to get a high grade on that specific test.
You can try and make a correlation, but I could counter every one of them with an example of a common opposite .

Some people take longer to work out problems. That isn’t a mark on their intelligence. That is a mark on the speed in which they can solve problems.
50 questions in 12 minutes for someone completely unprepared for the test is ridiculous. I imagine the guy was overwhelmed and his brain shut down staring at the pages. It happened to me before. I scored a 9 and retook the test a week later and scored a 27. I imagine if I studied for a month or two for it I would be in the upper 30s/low 40s.
But that was the thing. I was completely unprepared and panicked and dropped the bomb. Any other situation I can handle myself but taking tests is something I struggle to stay calm through and have since I was a child. A/B student throughout my schooling but always struggled with tests.

75% of the posts in this thread are absolutely ridiculous. What, Raheem and his staff are gone, Ruud’s gone, Faine’s gone so let’s turn the rightful fire on one of the only two or three proven positive factors on our team???! I wouldn’t doubt if one of the reasons Schiano wanted to come to TB was b/c of Blount and his upside potential. Big, bruising, refuse to give up on a down, back. A potential “bellcow” to feed and feed and feed the rock to.
Hawaiian, his 1,000 yard “season” wasn’t even a full season. His time on our team has been driven by inept offensive coordination behind a center that couldn’t run block in the first quarter (before we were behind by 3 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter), an average right tackle that we need to replace ASAP, no legitimate no.1 WR, no opportunity to catch balls(even after doing a pretty damned good job at catching his share of limited opportunities), AND after not being FED the ball the way 31 other teams WOULD’VE used him.
He DOES have some weaknesses. Foremost the fumbling issue. He DOES need to learn to pass block. We should all be very excited that Ernest Byner is here. We should be excited as hell that Schiano wants to pound the rock and feed our RB the way we were all praying Greg Olsen would’ve done last year. THIS year we have Carl Nicks, we have Vincent Jackson, we have Ernest Byner, we have Schiano, we’ll have a speedster back added in the draft. EVERYTHING we’ve all been crying about.
I digress. Richardson appears to be a tremendous talent and if we draft him I’m sure he’ll be incredible for us. I think it’s the wrong choice b/c of what Blount did with crappy coaching and an underperforming O-line w/out a deep threat and NO OFFSEASON.
Offseason+Nicks+Jackson+Faine gone+Byner=Blount Heaven
After we draft Mr.Wonderlic and not let the score be driven up on us from the getgo we’ll see Blount excel and then all of you Blount-b!tchers will turn your complaining where it should be…our weak LBs.

I know it looks as if I’m taking shots at Blount, so I get what you are saying. I can’t emphasize enough that I really like him, and I would be extremely upset if we were stupid enough to get rid of him. My point is that he has yet to earn the right to have any input whatsoever in who we draft. If he wants to go public and “keep it real”, then he also has to face the backlash that awaits as a result. That’s part of it. All of those factors you stated as to his last 2 years I believe are absolutely correct, but you also correctly stated that he is not a complete back. Therefore, he doesn’t get to draft players, and we shouldn’t care if his feelings get hurt. If he plays great, he will be on the field regardless of who the other RB is. That’s an old competitive athletic concept: play great so the coaches can’t take you off the field.

When you hear Claiborne talk about football you can clearly tell he has a high football IQ. Wonderlich scores and football play have next to no correlation whatsoever. Maybe he thought the test was pointless and just xmas tree’d that crap anyway, who knows!

How dare Blount want the majority of the carries. All he did is rush for a 5 yard average behind a patchwork O-Line as a rookie with no offseason. Blount is a proven NFL Running Back, and we’re just supposed to move on from that for no good reason.

It is obvious that Dominik understands positional value, so I expect him to make the right choice. According to most supposed draft experts Claiborne and Richardson grade out very close to each other, so there’s the answer. Besides that, we have a 1000 yard rusher on the roster and one of the worst secondaries in the NFL. Oh, and we also have a new Head Coach that wants to run mostly press coverage on the outside. Ah, and don’t forget that our starting CB is facing prison time. Hmmm, what to do?

I may be mistaken, but I don’t see too many people wanting to get rid of Blount. I know I certainly don’t. However, he made a very stupid comment today. You know it, I know it, and soon enough he will probably know it. Crazy thing is, he would benefit greatly from sharing a backfield with Richardson (as Richardson would from sharing a backfield with Blount).
To say drafting a RB top 10 is stupid is a bit of an exaggeration. It has worked many times before, most recently Adrian Peterson. It is almost universally accepted that TR is the best back since AP, so I don’t think it is that stupid at all. Perhaps we need defense more and Claiborne would be a better pick, but perhaps not. If he runs for 1300 yards and scores 10 TD’s this year and we make the playoffs, was it a stupid pick then? Remember the spark Cadillac gave us (also a #5 pick)? TR is twice the RB Caddy was pre-injuries. As for who grades out higher, that depends on Dominik. It only matters who he grades out higher, not everyone else. We shall see. I have a feeling TR is getting picked by Cleveland, so it probably won’t matter.

Listen, Morris Claiborne is obviously an idiot. He coasted through all levels of school and decided to not retain any knowledge. Regardless of how great of a football player everyone but myself thinks he is and is going to be, he is stupid. Stupid people make bad decisions. Stupid people get in trouble. Stupid people willingly cheat on tests and cut corners to get through school. Stupid people are immature and think that school is only about playing sports and not learning. Stupid people get caught in bad situations.
Some people might say wonderlic scores aren’t important or relevant. To that I say. time and time again these score continously get brought up with a lot of media coverage. So if you are smart, why tank the test knowing the likely results?
Some people may say that he suffers from text anxiety. To that I say, do you want a player that gets anxious in high pressure situations being the new leader of your NFL defense?
Some people may say that Morris Claiborne never intended to learn at college and was playing the system to get to the NFL. To that I have several questions. Do you trust a guy who will knowingly cut corners, at the expense of his own education, to get ahead in life? Do you think that a man has an adequate level of maturity that will risk serious injury with absolutely no back up plan, by playing football and not committing to bettering himself academically? Do you think a normal studetn, with no athletic ability, that cheats their way through school to obtain a degree is a good person?
What would you do if you child was caught cheating their way throught school?
This is a big deal. Claiborne has major character flaws. I thought all the Talib basshing, Winslow hating, Bucs fans were all about “high character.”
We can’t add this arrogance to our team. To flaunt the system for so long and think that you are above the rules. No thanks. We don’t need anymore idiots to our team!
My draft wishlist, if available, is as follows:
1. Kalil
2. Richardson
3. Blackmon (Come on guys Jackson, Blackmon, and Williams would be sick)

Not sure how the wonderlic doesn’t matter at all? Why does the 40 in street clothes, the bench press, etc.? It’s to see where a person is physically and mentally not just for stats but to see if these young men prepared properly for their biggest multi interview of their lives. They have the game tape on these guys, they want to see how they prepare. Why do 4.0 IVY league grads have to interview with anyone? How many NFL prospects have been caught with DUI’s or on the ganga around this time? If they can’t handle this how will they when they are guaranteed millions of dollars? Show up do well and let your game tape speak for yourself and you will be fine.
His respected agent Bus Cook has to have his clients do some type of preperation as do all good agents. That’s his most important job is to prepare his clients for the combine, pro day, wonderlic especially with the rookie salary cap. Agents don’t really negotiate rookie contracts anymore, it’s all networking your contacts with these teams to solidify the best possible draft outcome for your client. Hell if I was a top 10-15 pick I would seriously think about hiring a lawyer with professional sports contract negotian experience and pay him by the hour, much cheaper.

If you are a first round top 5 pick you ARE going to play, plain and simple. Richardson would be given every opportunity to have the starting job.
Blount wants to prove his worth. He did the best he could by him self last year and actually improved in the area’s he lacked. Remember with out OTA’s for the last 2 years.
I understand about the fumble issue. But you have to be realistic. Most of those fumbles come from fighting for that extra yard or breaking a tackle. It was the same problem A.P. had. Not that he didn’t know how to protect the ball. But when he fights so hard to stay on his feet and keep moving at times “body position” allows the ball to be a tad more vulnerable. Also you have to give credit to the defensive players who train hard to create fumbles.
Just saying, The Blount bashing is sad. The Buc fans never seem to be satisfied. LGB is a very good talent and is dirt cheap still. He deserves and has earned a real chance to be coached and utilized before he is kicked to the curb.
And just a side note. Blount is welcome to the idea of other RB’s. Like i said earlier it’s different when it is the first pick “top 5 to boot”. He would be everything but cut if we drafted Richardson.

And I have to ask, how in the heck do you train for a test? I think that is why our schools are failing because they train for the F-CAT. Train for a written test of knowledge. I love that attitude vs. the usual BS we hear from players… Lets give him a pass on last year… if he doesn’t perform this year we can grab a back next year. RB is an ideal position to target in the middle of the first round because they don’t go early, so lets assume we pick 20th next year, and if Blount fails we are in a great spot to get the best RB in next years draft to go with the speed back we grab in Rnd 3 this year and the DB and LB we grab in the first 2 rounds this year.

Those that state Blount is a feautre back are wrong. This guy is 250 pounds and tiptoes to the line of scrimage. You can’t be a feature back and wait for a hole to open on short yardage situations. Those that say we don’t need Blount to get the short yardage plays, that Freeman can handle that. Do you really want your franchise QB taking those kind of hits? I don’t.
Blount is scared of contact unless it’s a defensive back. Even then he would rather try and jump over them than run over or through them. A 250 pound running back scared of contact is not a #1 running back.
If Blount wanted to be the guy, he would have done anything and everything to be on the field all of the time. You don’t need coaches to learn the playbook. Do you think Freeman, Faine or even Zuttah would have said no to LGB if he asked them for help learning the protections. I seriously doubt it. This is on him and nobody else.

@SteveK…we’re not talking about ‘that’ kind of football. We’re talking american football. You may be a soccer player but apparently you know nothing about what a ‘compliment’ back is. Trent Richardson would be a luxury pick and it’s one we don’t need. Doug Martin in round 2 along with Blount behind our O-line would be better than just about any other teams O-line and Richardson. He’s a great RB but we need Claiborne far more than we need Richardson.

rdbucfan. Your comment about short yardage is simply one of the small list of things he’ll learn with an awesome line, better coaching decisions and a proven NFL RB as his coach. Of course he tiptoed before hitting holes that weren’t there. He had Faine trying to run block. pffft. He’ll work on that with Byner and hit the road-grated caverns opened by Penn/Nicks/Zuttah/DJ.

Excuse me? I am assuming you are mistaking me for someone else. Where did I ever say anything about diminishing what he did on the field? All I said was it needs to be looked into. Get you panties out of your arse and don’t attack me for just saying that. Smart money says he will be a great pro, but what is wrong with our GM doing some research and finding out the story of why his score was so low? Millions of dollars is to be invested on him, it would be moronic not to. But nah, let’s just ignore the lowest score of all time and throw money at him without doing research!!!!
