Bucs Sign Eric Wright Already This Morning
March 14th, 2012Joe hasn’t even swallowed his massive cup of java yet this morning and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is already at it and the sun hasn’t risen yet!
Per Adam Schefter of BSPN, the Bucs got their cornerback, Lions defensive back Eric Wright.
@AdamSchefter: First deal of day is in: CB Eric Wright reached agreement with Tampa Bay, signing deal today.
Joe stands up and offers a standing ovation. The Bucs have a cornerback, which along with linebacker was sorely needed. For those wondering, yes, the Lions tried to re-sign Wright. He wasn’t a castoff.
Now if the Bucs grab Morris Claiborne in the draft, a responsible pick, the Bucs will have a stout secondary.

This is a smart move and at the relatively inexpensive price(I assume).
March 14th, 2012 at 7:57 am
The story of Eric Wright’s career has been inconsistency. I have a feeling were going to love or hate this signing. He has all the potential in the world, but for some reason this buy gets burned more than toast….
March 14th, 2012 at 7:58 am
I like the signing, depending on the price.
March 14th, 2012 at 7:59 am
He was the best corner left
March 14th, 2012 at 7:59 am
Looked him up online. Had a solid year last year but his career has been up and down. Happy that we will have competition. I wonder how close he and Tulloch are.

Tylund:
Id argue the following could be considered “better” than Wright
Tracy Porter ,Arron Ross, Richard Marshall Cedric Griffin, & William Gay
March 14th, 2012 at 8:10 am
Bottom line whether this guy starts or at least is a solid nickel CB, it’s depth to a position we have little at. If I never have to see Biggers again chasing WRs 40 yards down field on a coverage he blew I’ll be a happy man.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:15 am
He’s better than Biggers and Lewis, welcome Mr. Wright
March 14th, 2012 at 8:16 am
He is inconsistent, but assuming the price is right, the question that should be asked is, is he better than Biggers, Lewis or Mack?
Yes.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:18 am
“Eazy-E were you ever caught slippin’?”
“HELL NAW!”
March 14th, 2012 at 8:22 am
All I know is he’s a lot better than Brent Grimes. Other than Finnegan I’d say Wright was one of the best corners available in free agency. I’m extremely impressed so far! Now, if we can only get Nicks signature on a contract we will have completed a SWEET Trifecta! We’re gonna see some sellouts this season folks!!!!
March 14th, 2012 at 8:24 am
Great job.
I’ve been pining for Finnegan, but not at that price. With DB’s signing left and right Dominik did what he could with what he had where he was. Another good signing.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:26 am
I know during past weeks we expected finnegan or carr but, what if they want this kid huh?? sure is not big name, but hey is an add for this CB Depth, also, is like the bucs are on the Mo Claiborne bandwagon, and im fine with that
March 14th, 2012 at 8:28 am
“All I know is he’s a lot better than Brent Grimes.” SMH Wright has given up twice as many TDs as Grimes over the past 3 years. Arguing him over Grimes will be fruitless. Grimes is one of the best in the league. Wright just is.

Day:
To be fair, two of those years the Lions were beyond pathetic. Zero pass rush until Suh showed up.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:35 am
JB:
I think you need to put the bong down… No one in their right mind thinks Wright is a better player than Grimes…
March 14th, 2012 at 8:36 am
He will be solid 2nd cb once claiborn gets here.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:36 am
@Joe Why does that matter? Wright’s only season with the Lions was this past one.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:39 am
Not exactly the kind of character guy that I want on the team. But, really, almost anyone has better character than Talib. If this is a step towards cutting Talib, then so be it.
Ready for Claiborne in the draft.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:41 am
The guy gets burn almost on every play, guess he will fit perfectly here…
March 14th, 2012 at 8:41 am
I like this signing. Gives us a vet presence too. I still want to see what Gaitor can do and I’m guessing that we’re targeting Claiborne in the draft if he’s there when we pick. If Claiborne is gone I expect the pick to be Richardson. Definitely will not be Blackmon now that we have Jackson. Things are really looking up!
March 14th, 2012 at 8:43 am
P.S. Grimes is definitely better than Wright. Not even close…
March 14th, 2012 at 8:47 am
travis, i thought tracy porter was all but signed
March 14th, 2012 at 8:50 am
Last season’s negatives for Wright:
*5th among CBs most missed tackles with 14
*6th among CBs most reception yards allowed with 842
*Tied at 14th with 5 TDs allowed
*16th among CBs highest catch percentage allowed with 62.8%
*10th most Penalties for a CB with 8
March 14th, 2012 at 8:54 am
Last season’s positives for Wright:
*9th most snaps by a CB with 1043
*5th most tackles by a CB with 724
*10th lowest yards per completion with 11.2
*11th in pass deflections with 10
*Tied 8th in most INTs with 4
March 14th, 2012 at 8:56 am
All in all it seems like an aggravatingly inconsistent but healthy CB with tons of potential that flashes at times for the good as well as the bad.
We’ll have to wait and see what our coaching staff can do with him because he is on contract for 5 years now. It will be interesting to say the least.
March 14th, 2012 at 8:58 am
I repeat:
He is inconsistent, but assuming the price is right, the question that should be asked is, is he better than Biggers, Lewis or Mack?
Yes.
After VJax and potentially Nicks…whom do you think they would get for a CB?
March 14th, 2012 at 9:00 am
5th most tackles by a CB with 724. This is what I like…a CB that can tackle.
March 14th, 2012 at 9:03 am
@Scotty LMAO! Woops! *72*
March 14th, 2012 at 9:10 am
LMAO….72 sounds MUCH more realistic doesn’t it. I just copied and pasted from above reply.
March 14th, 2012 at 9:37 am
Do we have contract details yet? I think anything over $5 mill per year is too much. We still have plenty of dough, let’s keep the ball rolling.
March 14th, 2012 at 9:45 am
I care most about picks…but as long as he doesn’t give up on plays I’m happy. Many of his teammates say he is among the best…he’ll have to prove it.
One of the biggest complaints I have on Biggers is his failure to pursue and tackle after he blows a coverage. Too many of his assignments had yards after catch last year.
March 14th, 2012 at 9:53 am
This essentially shows the bucs definitely want claibourne
March 14th, 2012 at 10:02 am
adam shefter reports bucs sign nicks 5 year 47.5 million dollar deal!!!
March 14th, 2012 at 10:03 am
In the immortal words of Wolfman from Top Gun: “This gives me a h@rd on.”
Loving me some Bucs. Now, if only Thomas 2.2 can see a shred of positive news in anything, we really will have turned the corner. Ha
March 14th, 2012 at 10:05 am
@Matt
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 14th, 2012 at 10:10 am
Nicks is a Buc. $47.5 mil with $31 mil guaranteed.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:28 am
Now if only we didn’t have the worst safeties in the NFL ….
