Is Freeman Aching For More Weapons?

So what did Josh Freeman tell Rich Gannon recently?
Speaking moments ago on Movin’ The Chains on SiriusXM NFL Radio, co-host Gannon said he “spent time with Freeman over the weekend,” and “I think [Freeman] realizes [the Bucs] need help at wide receiver.
Gannon went on to say he believes Arrelious Benn is never going to be a top player.
“That’s an area they have to addresss. They’ve got to surround Josh Freeman with more talent at receiver, as well as running back,” Gannon said.
Gannon and co-host Adam Schein also made a reference to San Diego free agent running back Mike Tolbert appearing on their show yesterday and quickly mentioning Tampa Bay during a discussion of his free agency.
Interesting.

I agree with Josh, Benn will never turn out to be a big enough weapon that his spot should require. Problem with mediocre GM’s, versus the few great ones, is knowing when to quit giving a GM’s previous draft picks, such a benefit of the doubt. IMHO, WR is not always a position that requires several years in NFL to acquire greatness, like QB, CB, OL.
Hopefully Dom can be more calculating, cut people with minimal dead cap money, replace RB, LB, and WR (other than Williams), with quality proven production. (Past) draft pick rationalization……sucks.

Freeman didn’t say that about Benn, Gannon did. Also Benn was one of Dominick’s draft picks, not Bruce Allen’s, so Dom would have every reason to stick with Benn on the team (not necessarily as a starter) for at least one more year.
Finally, I would disagree with you on how quickly a WR can develop in the NFL. While there are examples of players coming in making an impact immediately, there are many more examples of players needing 2 or 3 years experience before becoming a consistent contributor.

This will Benn’s third season, correct? I would think three years would be plenty….
Same with Williams. Same with Lewis. McCoy and Price need to show that they can stay on the field. It really does not matter if you are good or bad, if you can’t stay healthy.
So, that’s Dominick’s first 5 picks of the 2010 draft…..still waiting….

Don’t forget that Benn also came off an ACL tear in his first season. We aren’t going to give up on him yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get better receivers and make him fight for his playing time.

Yeah, ALSTOTTSMART, yeah…agree. Wouldn’t you also say, that the genetic makeup–chronic injuries–are indeed as much part of the player that one signs or drafts, as football IQ, or workout regimen?…Difference in pros, perhaps, is when “players can’t stay healthy”, is maybe that their bodies are seeing consistent and harder hitting and work in the NFL, that their bodies simply didn’t experience full-time during their college careers?…no?..

I HOPE Benn see’s this and it drives him to prove Gannon wrong. I think Benn will end up being better than Mike Williams down the road…it might be over optimistic, but there it is.

I think Benn and Williams deserve at least this year and next. Afterall, most of you gave Stovall almost unlimited time.

Williams is good. Keep him. Way too long a leash on Stovall, you’re right, was a plodder, to thick, slow, outta Notre Dame. All the more reason, why, Vincent Jackson’s size/speed/burst combo is so rare. I prefer Wallace, VJax is good though.

That was Gannon’s quote on Benn…not Freeman’s. Freeman said he could use help but he DID NOT say that Benn would never develop into a top receiver. That was just the opinion of Gannon. I personally think Benn has a huge upside, maybe greater than Williams. He is just not as quick to learn as Mike Williams but probably has more potential. More speed, bigger target, more yds after catch.

I guess, I don’t know for sure. Ultimately, it’s a results based business. If you can’t get/stay on the field, you cannot produce.
If those 5 picks produce, the accolades would go to the guy making the picks. And, if they do not, the criticism goes to the same guy. That’s just how it works.

I like Freeman, and hope he turns it around….but, what are Dominick’s draft homeruns? I’m just curious. I can’t say any of these guy from 2009 or 2010 are slam dunks. Grimm was a bright spot, but see my comments on staying on field. Stroughter, I like, but, a slam dunk? He will be fighting for a roster spot come August.

Agree 100%, short of Freeman, think he is, will be darn good, with competent coaching now, especially Sullivan. Limiting mistakes as QB is ,much easier, with talented gameplanning, playcalling.

Get a QB that does not telegraph where he is going to throw the ball. Or throw it 10 yards over their head or behind them. Ever notice it was always the receivers fault never Freeman’s when Freeman was yelling. They always did it wrong never him. The only reason he is here is because he was Rah’s boy. I will never forget the wide open lane he had to the end zone for a TD and had no idea what to do other than keep looking to throw. Receivers are 2nd rate. News flash. So is Freeman.

Add in a 60 million dollar contract for GMC, who has the same number of game missing injuries as sacks in his career and you begin to wonder how Dom is still employed, much less a rockstar.

Thats on the player not the evaluator. Would you rather we used that contract on a safety (Eric Berry)? Would that have been worth it? We would’ve had to pay the 35 million guaranteed to whoever was at that pick Thomas yet you continue to blast the pick.
Dominik has had a ton of failures that you can harp on but a) the jury is still out on GMC b) GMC was the highest rated player on the board when he was taken and c) the draft is a crapshoot. It’s honestly pretty ridiculous that you’re still obsessed with this.
