McCoy’s Goal: NFL Comeback Player Of The Year
March 11th, 2012Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is out in San Diego for the second consecutive offseason rehabilitating his bicep and training with renowned fitness guru Todd Durkin.
In this video, Durkin sits down with “The Dini,” as McCoy calls himself, to break down how McCoy is training full-time — as in eight-hour days — and McCoy makes it clear his goal is to win the NFL’s comeback player of the year award. Good training footage here, especially McCoy’s pilates instructor, one of those fitness dominatrix types.

First off, it is good that he is working out; however, he did the exact same thing last year and we saw how that worked.
I thought that he came in to camp in shape last year, didn’t matter.
I don’t like how his goal is a personal one – win comeback player. He needs to learn a team first mentality – his goal should be win games – not awards.
This explains why he goes to SD every offseason instead of training in Tampa.

I like McCoy as a person….seems like a nice guy… but I don’t have much of an opinion about him as a football player since he doesn’t play much. I think it’s in his best interests, and ours, if he “quietly” goes about playing extremely on a consistent basis rather than always playing before a microphone or camera.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:31 am
He looks even leaner than last time i saw him.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:34 am
And if he said he just wants to win, people would be bashing him for not to talking about trying to better himself on the field. Some people love to live in a constant state of malice, tension and strife.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:49 am
I would like for him to strive for NFL Defensive Player of the Year…not Comeback Player. Seems to be selling himself short.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:50 am
Joe here,
@Thomas 2.2 — McCoy’s specifically in San Diego to work with the Durkin guy in the video. He’s a guru that trains Drew Brees and other NFL names.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:56 am
hard work is hard work.mccoy puts it in with film, playbook offseason conditioning and chasing 50+cougars.no doubt gmc pushes himself to be better and i wish more guys on the roster did the same.i think the kid finds his groove this year and morphs into the leader and disruptive presence on the field we all want him to be.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:56 am
Thomas 2.2
You’re like a woman in the midst of a menstrual cycle…always find something to bitch about.
Kudos to GMC for taking his job seriously.
March 11th, 2012 at 9:59 am
I know Joe. There are plenty of Todd Dirkin’s in Tampa – they wOuld easily come to one buc to train him.
It rarely works when you dont rebab and offseason train at or near work. See keyshawn, k2 etc. This team needs to develop chemistry, apparently the kind he has developed in SD.
I am glad that he is rehabbing and training – I would like him to do something different, since this program resulted in 3 serious injuries, at One Buc with Josh and the boys though.
March 11th, 2012 at 10:10 am
He will never get it, even if he deserves it. All Peyton Manning has to do is set foot on the field and he will win for no other reason than he is Peyton Manning. The same thing happened to Cadillac when he came back from his second knee injury. He got bumped by Tom Brady who was out with a torn ACL. Personally, an ACL seems like a rather common and routine injury. Cadillac is lucky he could walk again, let alone play football at a high level.
How about setting your sights on something more attainable? Like Defensive Player of the Year?
March 11th, 2012 at 10:19 am
I can’t believe that Thomas responded to this GMC news negatively. That’s just not like him at all…..
March 11th, 2012 at 10:21 am
@ Adam L
I have no idea what you just wrote bro lol
March 11th, 2012 at 10:35 am
Adam was saying that McCoy won’t win comeback player of the year… that’s what he will “never get” because Peyton will win it just for playing…. to add further to Adam’s comments, McCoy technically shouldn’t be able to win the award, comeback players generally come back from injury and return to greatness… if McCoy were great this year, this would be his first time there… he hasn’t been great yet.
I’m happy that McCoy is working hard, I don’t care what city it’s in. One of my big concerns with him coming out of college was his work ethic. He only put up 225 23X and generally speaking, low reps equals poor work ethic. That doesn’t seem to be the case here. I do wixh that McCoy wasn’t the only Buc in the video, wouldn’t it have been nice if Brian Price were to travel down from LA and partake in his intense conditioning program?
March 11th, 2012 at 10:51 am
Are those giant chains attached to the bench bar?
Damn!
March 11th, 2012 at 11:14 am
Joe, it was his other arm that was hurt last year, not the one that he worked on. I also thought that I read that he has something unusal on how the muscles are attached. Is this true?
March 11th, 2012 at 11:22 am
@ Brandon
Bench press is overrated just like the 40. Sapp repped 17 times on the bench while Roy “Roller Skates” Miller had 36 bench reps at the Combine and has a like 600 lbs squat. Whether he can get to his gap, anchor down and make a play is all that matters to me.
I’m less concerned with his work ethic than his technique. He’s disruptive and athletic but it’s almost always uncontrolled. Hopefully the new staff will harness his skills better…and teach him how to tackle properly without hurting himself.
March 11th, 2012 at 11:46 am
Why win comeback player when you could being trying to win a superbowl? I like McCoy and think he’s getting better. He did have two rare injuries, But he better show up this year hard and not get injured.
March 11th, 2012 at 11:57 am
I believe Freeman and a couple others also work out with they guy from time-to-time. And GMC does spend a lot of time in Tampa, Thomas…once again you make things up hoping no one calls you on it.
March 11th, 2012 at 11:58 am
BTW, winning comeback player means going from the bottom to the top. One man cannot win a superbowl. But he can play his best at his position, and when a whole team does that, you win rings.
March 11th, 2012 at 12:08 pm
I hate this guys personality. Always giving that stupid bug eyed smile. How about you give a serious look like you mean business.. and why call yourself geraldini? cuz you always disappear from the field? GMC needs to stop talking and play like a top three pick
March 11th, 2012 at 12:11 pm
Typical Tiny Tommy comment: “2/10. Would not bang.”
Then he comes out of the basement to look for extra Cheetos in his mother’s pantry.
March 11th, 2012 at 12:19 pm
Why does he always have to be such a clown? I’m not saying I expect to always be Mr. Serious….but damn man. He is always goofing off acting like a silly junior high kid. Just hard to imagine him ever being a dominant DT in this league with his personality.
March 11th, 2012 at 12:36 pm
I don’t want to hear another word out of “Geraldini” except for locker room interviews. He’s a defensive diva – loves the spotlight and the football player lifestyle, but forgot what got him there.
He’s like the anti Iverson, loves practice but could give a sh!t about the 60 minutes that matter. What a douchebag.
Now Price is a class act. Comes back from a career ending injury (not to mention overcoming his past), and the man doesn’t boast about it one bit. Get a f#ck!n clue McCoy.
March 11th, 2012 at 12:38 pm
Oh, and how much do you wanna bet the man gets manni/peddi’s. Freakin diva.
March 11th, 2012 at 12:41 pm
Give him credit for working hard at rehabbing an injury working out 8 hours a day is a lot. His biceps will be stronger after healing then they were before he was injured. This injury was part of a genetic issue he was born with. I don’t see a problem with him going to one of the best trainers to get better so what he is not in Tampa in the off season. Less distractions not out clubbing all hours like our last head coach he’s taking care of business. He was starting to come on before the injury. I can not fault a guy for setting goals working hard to achieve those goals. Hopefully with a structured organized coaching staff in place this team will right itself. The frat house mentality is gone now. A successful program not only takes talent but organization and discipline which this team clearly didn’t have last 3 years. Hopefully that will change and GMC is doing his part to be ready. Good luck GMC and go BUCS
March 11th, 2012 at 12:59 pm
am i the only one who thought the burpees in that video were rather pathetic?
March 11th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
@Steendahl They aren’t pathetic when used to end a workout. Imagine working out doing all the stuff seen in this video for 90 minutes and ending with the burpees. Very strenuous.
March 11th, 2012 at 1:18 pm
It seems like he is always in front of the camera. He hasn’t lived up to his draft status and it is about he proves that he proves that he us worthy of a first round selection. He needs to go about his work out quietly.
March 11th, 2012 at 1:21 pm
@Jessup…what a stupid comment. He was a dominant DT in college with that personality wasn’t he. Once again…think before you post please.
March 11th, 2012 at 1:32 pm
Gerald all you have to is learn how to tackle.. Thats all i want to hear from you..
March 11th, 2012 at 1:52 pm
lol@McCoy. He is complete junk.
March 11th, 2012 at 2:06 pm
@Nate What? He doesn’t miss a lot of tackles. He didn’t miss any this past season either.
March 11th, 2012 at 4:10 pm
Come back from what/where he hasn’t been anywhere or done anything yet
March 11th, 2012 at 4:38 pm
SensibleBuc,
Great comment, the guy has elite get off but always misses his landmark. And Joe, could you recommend a site where the readers actually like the Bucs? I’m watching a kid work hard on and off the field and getting ripped by clowns with no clue. As this ship rights itself, let’s all remember the positions we’ve taken. As for me, I’m for all 53 guys with that the flag on their helmet and I hope every guy on the squad is going as hard as McCoy. His results and the teams will come.
March 11th, 2012 at 5:09 pm
Kind of a weird video. I’m not sure Todd Durkin should do TV.
March 11th, 2012 at 7:40 pm
@NJBuc….it does seen bizzare doesn’t it? I’ve said before that this site reminds me of what our rival fans would say about us at Carolina ,Atlanta, or New Orleans. I’m sure the Bucs players feel like “With fans like these…who needs enemies?”
March 12th, 2012 at 3:26 am
Anyone who has played sports at a decent level always sets personal goals. The team gets better as you get better. Now if he said “I don’t care how the team does, as long as I do well”, that’s a different story. But it is starting to get really old how negative some fans are. You don’t like his personality? That’s a really really stupid comment. How did you feel about John Riggins personality? Joe Namath? Personalities of athletes are different just like anyone else. To think that affects how they play is comical.
March 12th, 2012 at 9:17 am
@Hawaiian Buc
Jarrett can sugar coat it all he likes…he doesn’t like GMC because the man is outspoken about his faith.
But there are always complainers too. I remember some fans wanting Simeon cut because they felt he was too vocal.
Nothing wrong with personality, I say. GMC will either prove naysayers wrong or not. But it’s clear he is trying to do so.
