Davin Joseph Endorses Finnegan, Nicks

Aqib Talib, Ronde Barber and Cortland Finnegan in the Bucs secondary?
Davin Joseph likes the sound of that, so he told Tom Krasniqi on 1040 AM Thursday evening.
“I think he can really help us. There’s no doubt he’s a very talented individual,” Joseph said of Finnegan. “He’s the type of cornerback that we could use, especially with having receivers like Roddy White, Julio Jones and Steve Smith [in the division], and of course all the guys, you could name those guys off forever. He’s definitely be a guy that we could use right now. It’s going to help Aqib Talib. It’s going to help Ronde [Barber]. It’s going to help everybody because that standard is going to be lifted up, you know, of great play, of playmaking. Bringing a guy like that into our building is definitely going to help raise our game up.”
Joseph was very complimentary of Talib and called him a “good person” and said that’s the reason the Bucs have stuck with Talib through his various troubles and he doesn’t expect that to change. Joseph said, “I wouldn’t be so quick to pass judgment on him.”
To take a potential Bucs spending spree a step further, Joseph also said “it wouldn’t be a bad idea” if the Bucs signed All-Pro guard Carl Nicks, Joseph said he’d be a wonderful addition.
This surprised Joe a bit, since the Bucs offensive linemen are a tight-knit bunch and the signing of Nicks surely would cost Jeff Faine an O-linemen his job.
The free agency bell rings in less than three days!

Maybe the fans who keep ragging on Talib will stop and think after seeing all of these coaches and players professing their respect for him as a person. If he was such a bad seed he’d be gone by now.
I will say that he needs to step his game up though. With his elite athletic talent there’s no reason for him to get beat deep or picked on underneath. The bar should be set high for him.

@Eric – Dominik like every GM has his share of draft misses. Nicks fills the Aaron Sears debacle. A free agent corner fills the apparent miss on Myron Lewis combined with Ronde’s age and the previous regime’s drafting of “wild child,” injury-prone Talib. … See it all fits pretty.

So Finnegan is supposedly trying to package him and Tulloch and Vincent Jackson here in Tampa. Is there any word that the Bucs are even interested in that trio?
I certainly am. Along with Nicks and on to the draft.

@Eric – You can look at it a few ways. Is it really an about face with a newfangled salary floor system coming into play starting this year with however the average spending over the next few years will work?
As for the plan, “build through the draft” came on the heels of Derrick Ward, Kellen Winslow (trading of a 2nd-round + a giant contract) and the Albert Haynesworth miss. But build through the draft really means build through the draft and fill your inevitiable misses through free agency. It’s all so confusing.
Chucky’s way didn’t get a playoff win in six seasons, so that didn’t work either.
Oh, what we’d all do to see exciting football.

Come on, Eric, you know neither method is used solely to rebuild a team. Draft, Free Agency and Trades all play a role at various stages. At this stage, we need Free Agency and draft…simply because we cannot fill all the holes fast enough in the draft alone.

At this point I’d almost be surprised if Finnegan doesn’t end up here. Since I’ve been saying we should sign him since halfway through last season, maybe I’m a little too optimistic……but I’m definitely excited to see what happens on Wednesday

I’ll gladly take Tulloch and Finnegan but I’m not so hot on VJax. I just think we’re better served adding a dynamic speed receiver and developing our outside guys (Williams, Benn and maybe Briscoe). The WR position is not a big money position imo. If we sign VJax to a short-term contract then there’s no major downside so that would be cool with me.

I think we should trade down even if its to aquire one more second round pick.. This team has so many holes now… We need to get as many free agents as possible.. I think Mario Williams could help this team the most though… We need some1 to put cam on the ground! no one could do it last season..

Adding those three would be a fantastic move for the team! Would immediately upgrade 2 horribly weak spots, and give Freeman a weapon with tremendous speed.
Then we draft Claibourne and Lavonte David- we are BacK !

If the Bengals were interested in trading their #17 & #21 to move up, I’d take it if I were the Bucs. It works using the outdated points chart, and gives the team 3 out of the top 36 players to go along with their FA players.

Thank you for actually coming out with a realistic option for trading down other than just throwing out the “we need to trade down” generic post. The Bengals might be a realistic option if they really want Richardson, but I think they can probably wait awhile and trade up for him once he falls out of the top 10 picks.
I also think Blackmon might be somebody that the Jaguars might look to leapfrog the Rams to get. I would be more in favor of that trade because Kuechly would be sitting there for us.
Tuesday afternoon can’t get here fast enough.

This is one big If-then-else flowchart starting with FA. But, let’s assume that the Buc’s got a starting CB in FA and Talib escaped by the skin of his teeth in Texas. The option to trade down just got better. In my opinion, there was not enough daylight between Claiborne, Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, or Gilmore at the combine or on tape for me to conclude that Claiborne is a once-in-a-decade CB.
Picks 1 and 2 have been made now. The Vikings will take Kalil and the Browns are still in search of a QB. They are not in the Manning sweepstakes. If they don’t get Flynn and Tannehill has a good pro day on March 29, they will take him.
What puts the Bucs in a good position to trade down is the impressive pro day by Blackmon. The Browns could take Blackmon or Claiborne. But, 3 of the group of Tannehill, Blackmon, Claiborne, and Richardson is going to be there at 5 and lots of teams will have an interest. Somebody, including the Rams is going to want to trade up to ensure they get Blackmon if he is there. And there is plenty of demand for any of the others at 5. The Rams and the Browns have the picks to make the trade.
The Bucs should, at minimum, get a 2nd and a 4th. I would target Luke Kuechly/Donta Hightower/Zach Brown (MLBs) in the 1st and Jenkins/Gilmore (CBs) in the 2nd. With 2 extra picks and 2 more comp picks for Ruud and Cadillac (total of 10 picks), we should be good to go!

Great Post Macabee, and I agree, Claiborne is good, but not a once in every 10 years shut down corner. I would like to see more size in a corner then he has, though he can jump.

We need Mo. We should not risk losing him to trade down. If someone takes him before our pick, then we take Dre or trade for Wallace.
