Dominik Talks More About Spending

February 29th, 2012

Joe knows many Bucs fans near a state of complete arousal just thinking of Team Glazer opening the company checkbook to sign free agents.

And that excitement was stoked several days ago when rockstar general manager Mark Dominik said the Bucs would be active in free agency, though that was a rather vague statement.

Well, Dominik was talking about spending again, this time in a little more detail during an interview yesterday on Movin’ the Chains, the absolute must-listen-to show on Sirius-XM NFL Radio hosted by Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan.

“There has to be a mix and a match of free agency along with a football team. And you know, obviously we lost 10 in a row. We have to continue to try to acquire more talent for this football team,” Dominik said. “And we’ll do that in free agency if we can and hopefully we will. I mean that’s our goal. We’re prepared. We just have to wait and see what the list is. You know, because obviously with the franchise tags and transition tags that clubs have the options to use, that’s going to change the focus and the view of what free agency is today, versus what it’ll be come mid-March.”

Those who want to read between the lines and see a Team Glazer spending spree might be encouraged by Dominik talking about “franchise tags” and “transition tags”; those are expensive players.

Joe found it interesting to hear Dominik reference the loss of 10 in a row. Listening to his tone of voice, to Joe it felt like Dominik was admitting the team didn’t have the talent it needed last season. Though Joe still thoroughly believes the tank job by Raheem Morris and his staff gets the lion share of the blame for the 2011 debacle.

Dominik didn’t offer any hint as to the Bucs’ positional targets in free agency, but he did offer this nugget for the read-between-the-lines crowd.

“We still need to, you know, do a lot of things for him,” Dominik said of Josh Freeman.

Cautiously optimistic, but taking a wait and see approach.
I’m hearing some of the “Right Things”, but need to see some concrete & sensible actions (i.e. – don’t pay a #3 like a #1) in order to feel more confident about the direction.
    All that said GO BUCS!

  2. Vic Says:

If they sign Vincent Jackson, I’ll wet my pants.

  3. thegregwitul Says:

So far so good. I can’t wait for free agency. This team needs to do what it takes to net a few impact players and carry the momentum into the draft.

  4. jLM Says:

It’s going to be a long 2 weeks till’ FA.

  5. J 2.0 Says:

“And we’ll do that in free agency if we can and hopefully we will.”

That is somewhat unsettling. I don’t like “if we can” and “hopefully.”

  6. Rrsrq Says:

After the Bucs 10 win season, Free Agents wanted to come and play because they figured we were a player or two from the playoffs, I wonder whether players would want to come after the travesty of last season, a new college coach (which I like) and miles away from competing. I hope they come for more than the money, that being said they will only spend on maybe two big names, hopefully Vincent Jackson and Carl Nicks.

  7. stevek Says:

Free Agents can all be bought, and should be bought.

CB Finnegan and OG Nicks. Then lets draft….

  8. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Finnegan and Nicks could realistically both be franchised in the next two weeks. That’s what Dominik is talking about… The list of available players will change dramatically in the next two weeks, so committing to signing a certain number of players or certain positions is not even realistic at this point. They need to see what the quality of the pool looks like at each position. What is available today will NOT necessarily be available when free agency opens. I’m not even entertaining “wish lists” until we know for sure who can and can’t be signed.

  9. eric Says:

A bit of humility from Dominik is good to see.

Lets see if it translates into reality.

  10. Bobby Says:

I agree that it will only be one or two big signings and the rest will be depth players. A lot of the depth players will be just cutting some of our players and signing others so that won’t affect the cap too much. I expect them to save some for next year because the impact of an elite FA could be even greater next year when we know a little more about what could put us over the top to the next level. There’s a BIG learning curve this year.

  11. Macabee Says:

Look at it this way. If we could beat the Saints and Atlanta with last year’s team, just think what just a couple of impact FAs and a good draft could do for the Bucs. We don’t need to go whole hog in FA and we don’t need to fix everything the first year of a new administration.

Let’s set reasonable expectations. Steady the course, win some, lose some, be competitive in all. I want to see progress along the way, not regression! I saw what adding one impact player (Cam Newton) did to improve a team. I saw what losing one impact player (Peyton Manning) did to destroy a team.

Never say never, but don’t expect miracles!

  12. Josh Says:

    @Vic
    No doubt.

  13. Big007hed Says:

Nicks and Finnegan/Carr would be the ideal premier FA signings the Bucs could make… I think with Nicks the Bucs could have the most dynamic OLine in the NFL… man I hope they actually follow through and sign some big time FAs

  14. Captain Stagger Says:

    Vjax, Nicks, Finn, Tolbert, Tulloch

That should eat up that 67 million…..

  15. eric Says:

Hope they dont bring Reggie Brown back.

  16. Architek Says:

Joe what happen to the King David show?

  17. passenger27 Says:

Ben grubbs, Erin henderson, Brandon carr… then a solid draft

  18. eric Says:

Kareem Hugins only ended up with 11 yards rushing in his carreer.

    Hard to fathom.

  19. Joe Says:

    Architek:

Joe what happen to the King David show?

    Is it no longer.

  20. Thomas 2.2 Says:

We know Joe, in your eyes Dom can do no wrong. The Clayton, Ward, Crowell, Nugent, Leftwich, Black contracts were brilliant.

I wonder how much talent the roster would have if the $ was spent prudently.

How about capitalizing on Kyle Moore, Myron Lewis, GMC, Price, Benn, Fulton, Bowden etc? (how much productivity from them to date?). How about the decision to keep Biggers and Lewis but not Kyle Arrington? Bellichick is thanking Dom.

Rah was a terrible abd awful coach made worse by bad management = 10 losses in a row by a huge margin of defeat.

  21. Cmurda Says:

Well, this interview from Dominik was useless. I now feel less informed about our plans and the reality of whether or not we will spend.

  22. Capt.Tim Says:

    “Dominick talks about more spending”

Yeah, talk is all he does!!

Probably sign a longsnapper, to complete that championship kicking team, and that’ll be about it!

  23. MTM Says:

I hope the Bucs can acquire tackling and blocking in Free Agency. Hopefully those 2 aren’t franchised.

  24. eric Says:

    Championship kicking team.

    LMAO

  25. Eastsidebuc Says:

The ultimate DUH article. This dude is a clown, but that’s Joes “rockstar”. Both of these dudes need to join the circus. Now you “have to have a mix”, Dominic has a MBA too… SMH!!!!

  26. Brad Says:

Sorry Joe but your wrong. Dominik is pretty much admitting he failed and didn’t do enough to help the club. As long as he admits his mistakes and doesnt make them again he deserves another year. He knows he got lucky in keeping his job and is going to do whatever it takes ( not to put a winner on the field) but to keep his job. Spend Mark spend..

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

Don’t think so. Think Dom is obeying orders to the tee- ” cheap Dom! CHEAP!! Don’t spend a penny they don’t make ya spend!! Replace team captains with unsigned rookie free agents- just like we taught ya!! Good boy, Dom! Remember- Cheap as hell! We got a 7 year record fir lowest payroll and lowest paid coaching staff- you better not ruin our record!!”

Hope I’m wrong, but betting on the longsnapper, and a few third string scrubs- that will be proclaimed ” Superstars!!” when announced here!

History( and a lot if it!) are on my side.

  28. FreemanBomb5 Says:

Haha I really don’t agree with Capt Tim all that often but I almost my drink on my laptop when reading the good boy Dom remarks haha.

  29. Capt.Tim Says:

Freemanbomb5- why not? I’m always right- lol!

Ya gotta have a sense of humor, to have been a Bucs fan as long as I have!
