Because this is the first year any of us have ever heard heard Dominik actually talk about definitely spending in free agency and the first time any of us have read on the Buc’s website about a “clear mandate” to spend.

The talk of the owners being cheap is so annoying. People just wine and cry and a dumb ass kid that didnt get a binky,
The team has not been in a position for FA … last year they could have used John Joseph … This year we will get a few but dont think we will be the Eagles.

I just don’t see the Glazers as being stupid. Why would any business man want to hemorrhage money like the Redskins only to come up with nothing? Tampa citizens only excepts wins(and really the Super Bowl was what finally over filled the house) as a means to go to Buc’s games and spending flagrantly rarely leads to championships. So simply spending on any big name free agents is not the way to win.
Regardless of who we sign, there will still be people bitching that they didn’t get this guy or that guy or that they didn’t spend enough. Ridiculous.

A lot of good football teams don’t really spend a lot of money in free agency. Free agency is just to fill certain holes and add veterans to help support. All this talk about the bucs spending tons of money is crazy if we don’t find the right people for the holes we need to fill. They don’t need the “top free agent” to make a different. This team is close to being great. Add a speed WR, a third down RB and a better Josh Freeman and we have an offense that can compete with anyone. Add one more great corner and two sure tackling linebackers and this defense can play with anyone. GO BUCS

3 realistic FAs that would help the Bucs the Most IMO
1. Tulloch or Curtis Lofton
2. Ben Grubbs
3. Mike TOlbert (21 TDs in 2 years, can block for the QB and a true short yardage threat)

The way payroll is going to go up is by signing our own free agents. Problem is we haven’t drafted a pro-bowler in almost 12 years. I think we will fill some holes this offseason, but until everything is final I’m going to choose to speculate on fantasy style pickups like Vincent Jackson, Mike Wallace, and others. Why? Because its fun to pretend.

I think spending responsibly for players, young players that fit our team is a GOOD thing.
Nobody said NO SPENDING in FA. Hell, many wanted this team to spend 100 million on Albert Haynesworth just two years ago! LOL
I have a BRILLIANT idea! Let’s wait and see how the off-season progresses before we head for the Skyway for the final leap of zero faith.
I like what Coach Schiano is saying and his due diligence in working things out.
I feel confident that we are finally on the right path and it feels good.

Where has anyone asked the team to spend irresponsibly? I must have missed that post.
The reason that people get upset when they hear the the spend responsibly mantra, is that they have heard that same story before. What spend responsibly might mean to you and I, clearly means something different at 1BP. They should have signed a veteran LB, CB, and RB before last season. Instead they signed a punter. It’s not like this low spending just started one or two years ago. This is a decade now.
And, how on earth can anyone equate asking the team to spend more that the bottom of the barrel, with spending like Daniel Snyder. Are you telling me that there is zero in between those two extremes? I call BS.
If you look at the recent spending, the most successful teams have been right in the middle of the 32 teams. So, good lord, lay off the Dan Snyder references. TB could easily be 16th in spending, and still be “responsible”

The Bucs have been right in the middle in payrolls. It wasn’t until last year that they cheaped out. In 2010 the Bucs had a higher payroll than the Falcons, Packers, and Seahawks, who all went to the playoffs. It’s been one year on the bottowm and everyone acts like the Glazer’s are the cheapest S.O.B’s on the planet.
I think they’re going to add some players this year. And resign some of our guys next year.

Am I the only one who is worried that he doesn’t feel qualified to talk about the strengths of the team, because he’s spent so much time putting together his GD STAFF???
The man is at the combine, but doesn’t even know what players or positions he should be looking at! Guess it’s best player available this year, cuz Schiano doesn’t know what the team needs are!

What’s also pretty funny is when I hear people point to signings that didn’t happen as reference to them being willing to spend.
Favre and Haynesworth. So, that would have been responsible signings? The times they were actually willing to spend would have been terrible wastes.
And, would not those bad attempts go back to Dominick, the Quincy Black bank man?

While the buc’s haven’t had enough guys make the pro bowl recently; and that is a reflection on the roster.
*Davin Joseph technically has two under his belt.
*Two undrafted free agents made it to the pro bowl fairly recently from the bucs. Donald Penn and Clifton Smith (still pissed about the cheap shot he got from the panthers)

Steve, thanks for pointing that out I did forget about Joseph. Other than him though I can’t think of any other probowlers we drafted. Also the payroll thing is acurate the Bucs usually are around 13-17 over past 10 years with the exception of last year.

I think it’s quite obvious to anyone that watched Buccaneer football last year what the positions are that we’ll want to target in the combine. You act like teams don’t know EVERYTHING about every player they already have interest in. Our scouts have lists and lists of players we could be interested in with information on all of them and hours of film, too. As Joe puts it, the combine is a glorified track practice.

I just love listening to Schiano speak, such a cool calm demeanor to him but you know hes all business!! I think he will be a great coach, sounds just like Belichick and Tomlin when he talks.
About spending, I too am tired of fans grumbling about the Glazers being cheap, Im not from Tampa but was just down there in Dec to watch my Bucs play and from talking to people there….Im surprised the Glazers havent been run out of town, now Ive been a loyal fan of the Bucs for many many years now and have stood by them like the rest of my fellow fans, however, I think the criticism of the Glazers by not spending are unwarrented, I mean after all they did bring us our only Superbowl.
I do think their caution of spending on free agents is a smart move because more often than not the signing of high profile free agents can end up being the same result as a draft bust. More often than not, it is the role fill-in players who become more beneficial to teams than the high dollar ones. The Bucs were burnt on Derrick Ward a few years back and lets not forget about the Alvin Harper incident, and Asumuogh didnt do much for Philly and I mean we all know about Hayneworth. I mean it is a debatable subject but spending big dollars in free agency is not always the answer for winning championships, building a team through the draft is (exception Black I know)
But lets not forget that perhaps the Glazers were waiting to see how the new CBA worked itself out before they went a spent big money, I mean theyre not stupid business men, old man Glazer came from nothing to millionarie and own the biggest franchise in the world Man U and a football team. Just something to consider but I could be wrong and most likely am in most peoples minds

Can we not mistake badly crafted spending with wise spending?
Just because the GM has made blunders does not mean that you should not sign FA’s.
Hardy Nickerson: free agent
Brad Johnson: free agent
Simeon Rice: free agent
Keyshawn Johnson: free agent
Keenan McCardell: free agent
Joe ‘Vicious: free agent
Michael Pittman: free agent
The problem is, after McKay got the team into cap problems, the Glazers cut back on spending, and then the spending they have done recently was badly chosen, as I alluded to with reported Favre and Hanyseworth offers, or as mentioned, Derrick Ward
The Bucs would not have won a Super Bowl without free agents. Like many things in life, balance and moderation is the key. You will never win it all with just free agents, but, don’t expect to win much with only draftees either.
And, if you want to congratulate the Bucs for spending to get the Super Bowl, you’re right. Look at the payroll that season, Bucs were in the top half of the league. The sweet spot that has shown to have the most success. Then look at the subsequent spending up to this point. Notice a difference from the Super Bowl era? MUCH LESS SPENDING.

Why don’t some of you just breath and see what happens before freaking out?
We have CAP limits coming up, we have to figure out who we want to keep on the team and sign them and are going to pick up some free agents this winter.
I just think you need to give the new regime a chance before pointing fingers.
Did I mention some high draft picks coming up? These are good times IMO, not an extension of last season’s disaster but a new beginning. I myself am happier feeling that way, looking forward to next season already. Each to his/her own I suppose………

ALSTOTTSMART! – Keep preaching brother. Well said. I totally agree. There is a continuum between no spending on free agency and Dan Snyder spending on free agency, and I believe successful teams generally operate in the middle of that continuum. Moreover, just because our GM has made bad decisions in free agency – a la Derrick Ward (side point: I believe that most Bucs fans recognized that the Derrick Ward signing was a mistake AT THE TIME OF THE SIGNING, so using the Derrick Ward signing as an excuse for the Bucs to never spend in FA again is illogical) – does not mean that free agency is something to treat like a leper.
That said, I agree with Garv. I think Schiano has us on the right track. I would feel totally comfortable if the Bucs act as Schiano says they will in the interview. But forgive me for being a teeny bit skeptical (see ALSTOTTSMART!’s payroll stats since 2005). As a fan, I don’t trust Dominik.
