Derrick Brooks On Accountability, Bucs’ Troubles

- No. 55 shared a great Tony Dungy speech to the ’96 Bucs
Joe recommends checking out solid interview below with the great Derrick Brooks on The Ron and Ian Show on WDAE-AM 620 today.
Brooks, of course, didn’t throw darts at any Bucs personally, but he did explain what was going through his head as he watched the 2011 Bucs. Brooks said the Bucs’ problems were less “about talent” and “more so about a mental approach,” calling some of what he saw “disturbing.”
One great story Brooks shared was a locker room speech from Tony Dungy on accountability during Dungy’s first season in Tampa.
“The thing about it was when that line was crossed that player was not on this football team. We got the message,” Brooks said. “When that line was crossed in 1996 when he got here, I’ll never forget, he stood in front of our team meeting room/locker room and very sternly said, ‘Some of you guys on this football team will not be here. I wish I could get rid of you tomorrow but financially I can’t. But as soon as I can, I will. And if you’re lookin’ around, it’s probably you.’
“I’ll never forget that speech. And we had a very different football team in 1997.”

And thats why Dungys players went 110 percent and were disciplined compared to coach rah rahs homeboys.

Those players, like Quincy Back, not only stayed on the team but got huge raises under rahrah’s prior no accountability regime.
Others like Jackson, Winslow and Talib were no accountability, no practice, no discipline players but were celebrated bc they were buddies with the coach.
This is the kind of culture celebrated by some, like captain Tim, that causes: 17-31, zero playoff appearances, never finish above second to last in your division.
We now have accountability – all it took was shipping amateur hour out. Schiano will start coaching the RahRah right out of these good players, and shipping the others out. When you combine an average player, then you add in horrible RahRah coaching and no discipline the product you end up with = sabby piscitelli and Quincy black.

Really just a sad situation, those guys are making millions of $ to play a GAME for a LIVING….
Do the Bucs lack talent? tough one to answer, but without effort there is certainly no showing of talent.
Each day these guys come to work it is a chance to get better at your craft, and vice versa each day you come to work and you don’t put forth the right kind of effort you get worse.
The talent question about this roster is a tough one to answer.
Were the 2011 Bucs devoid of talent, or were they devoid of effort and direction?

So now Greg (the Sandwich) Schiano has his wacking speech cued up bang two to the back of the head. some of you guys are going to get clipped I’d hate to be in your cement shoes but it’s something that has to be done for the benefit of the family. The Bucs had sufficient talent on offense to be competitive last year if they had any level of coaching.
On defense, they lacked talent, coaching, direction, accountability, intelligence – you name it. An argument could be made that the defense was the worst defense ever. Of course, the coach responsible for it should be banished for life from NFL sidelines as a coordinator or higher.
Schiano will tear this defense down, as much as is possible with a lot of money tied up in guaranteed contracts. I would only keep Foster and Barber out of the back 7 – with Ronde playing nickel.
They need to bring a veteran D tackle, Price and Games Missed Constantly are not reliable, and so far have produced anything either. You cant go a full season with 2 unreliable and marginal tackles. Although I like what I see from Price. Don’t even mention Roy miller. I know the coaches like him bc he is a solid worker, unfortunately he stinks out loud.
It appears that we have 3 talented ends – Bowers, Clay and Bennett, and one outside linebacker in Foster – keep him out of the middle for good.
On offense, I would sign a tight end, sign a wr, draft a Rb, corner, LB, wr, safety to go with the free agent d tackle addition.

4 Buc coaches, despite 12 years- NEVER won 10 games
John McKay won 10 or more in 1979 -once
Tony Dungy won 10 games or more 3 times- 97,99, 2000
Gruden won 10 or more twice- 2002, 2005
Raheem won ten games in 2010
One of only 4 Buc coaches to win 10 games or more!

Jon Gruden deserves all the credit in the world for that SuperBowl. Made me the happiest Buc fan in San Diego that day.

I will give Raheem the 2010 season. It was a decent year, but he is not now nor will ever be considered one of the Bucs greatest coaches.

Capt Tim, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn in his life. Can you count for me Rah’s playoff wins/appearances? In the NFL, legacies are written in the playoffs. It’s why ELIte is n longer just Peyton’s brother.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. The biggest thing missing from this team was consequences, as illustrated by Brooks’ recount of Dungy’s speach. You act the fool, your out of here.
Under Dominik and Rah, if you smoked weed, and got suspended for 20 games, you got a contract extension. If you had several run ins with the law and cabbies, you got to keep your starting position. If you napped in meetings, you got a wet willy. Ok the last one can’t be confirmed, but you get the point.

Just Kidding!!! I’ll drop that. I knew it would never happen I just wanted to discuss.
My next possible WR discussion point is Wes Welker. Maybe adding Welker can put him in the slot as an experienced vetran savvy route runner with great hands (except in the Super Bowl) that can draw coverage off of Winslow which could open up Williams and Benn. You never know the possibilities.
And yes Capt Tim I am aware of your thoughts on the Glazers and want to raise some hell and all, but I think until our dreams are crushed it is fun to discuss the possibilities. And I think the Bucs will make a few moves this year. I predict a splash on offense a solid defense pick up and a couple of 2nd tier guys.

“LeGarrette Blount isn’t the sharpest light bulb in the tool shed, as Emmitt might say. He can’t catch the ball, and he doesn’t understand pass protection schemes. There’s a reason the coaching staff doesn’t use him in passing situations. He’s just completely lost, and it doesn’t help that he fumbles the ball at every opportunity.
The running back position isn’t Tampa’s greatest need, but it must be addressed this offseason. Trent Richardson is the best player available (Adam Schefter vowed that he would be picked in the top 10), so the Buccaneers would definitely consider him. They really need to add two play-makers on offense, and obtaining the Alabama runner would be a nice start.
*** OTHER 2012 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: ***
1. Morris Claiborne, CB – Aqib Talib could be going to jail, while Ronde Barber will probably retire this offseason. The corner position is a dire need for Tampa. Morris Claiborne is easily the top talent available, save for Richardson.
One thing to consider, which is something that Charlie Campbell touched on in his 2012 mock, is that the Buccaneers can grab a corner like Alfonzo Dennard atop Round 2, whereas a running back of Richardson’s caliber won’t be available there.”

All this garbage about Blount not being able to block or catch is nonsense built up by a coaching regime that couldn’t coach and an ESPN website that spits out whatever it hears off of talk radio. None of those sites watch tape. They all just repeat repeat repeat until it is considered fact(enter a Davin Joseph pro bowl).
The tape doesn’t show anything other than Blount blocking and catching just as well as any other back. Blount only missed one catch last year. Blount only allowed one sack last year. Not bad at all. He didn’t have a lot of pass blocking/receiving snaps but he did way better than Blumpkin for sure.

If I am not mistaken, the franchise only had 7 coaches – if I am correct that wiliamson was just interim.
Every coach hired by the Glazers has won 10 I believe.
2010 was a ridiculous fluke and rah admitted it. Wen you have a 10 win non-playoff season sandwiched by 3 and 4 win seaons its worthless.
Its like making 1 par and 17 double bogies duing a round of golf and arguing the one hole proves that you are a decent golfer.

Big changes coming. I see half teh roster gone in 2 years. BUT I still believe a big part of the core group is here:
McCoy, Clayborne, and Price on the D-Line (maybe Bowers too) and Foster at LB
and Freeman and Williams and Benn and Blount and Penn and Joseph on the offense
