Vincent Jackson On Bucs’ Radar?
February 4th, 2012This season truly will test whether what Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has often said is true: that the Bucs are “all about No. 5.”
The passing game was putrid last year. Was Mike Williams overrated? Have defensive coordinators found a way to stop him?
Those are logical questions, but regardless, the best way to make sure Williams gets open is to get heat off of him. One way to do that is to tap into a very deep wide receiver pool of free agents.
Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski, “The Commish,” seems to be of the mind that the Bucs may be eyeing San Diego wide receiver Vincent Jackson, so he commented on his blog, CommishOnline.com.
Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network stated that the top suitor for Vincent Jackson might be the 49ers. The 49ers did reach the NFC Championship Game, but their vertical pass game was very suspect. However, the 49ers weren’t the only team LaCanfora mentioned in regards to Vincent Jackson.
“I also wonder about rebuilding quarterbacks,” LaCanfora said. “Sam Bradford in St. Louis or [Josh] Freeman in Tampa, they need to build around those guys and give them some weapons. Those are the kind of teams I see going big for Vincent Jackson.”
Vincent Jackson’s market might not be that big because of cap limitations for a lot of teams, so a team like the Buccaneers or Rams might have the upper hand in acquiring him.
Of course, as Justin points out, Jackson may not even be available if the Chargers franchise him.
So is it too early to suggest Williams is overrated? Joe believes it is. Joe would like to see what Williams — and Arrelious Benn — can do with an offensive coordinator who can actually devise plays to get receivers open consistently.

How much for a V J ? If u have to ask u cant afford it.
February 4th, 2012 at 9:10 am
I don’t see why we can’t not give up on Williams and Benn AND go after a veteran WR in free agency. I think that what this team really needs is some veteran leadership to show these young guys how to do their job when things aren’t all sunshine and rainbows.
February 4th, 2012 at 9:24 am
I read some where that he wants to stay in SD.
February 4th, 2012 at 9:41 am
Williams, Benn, and Briscoe are good at what ‘they do’. We don’t need a WR to come in and be ‘the man’ we need down the field guy, someone who compliments and completes our WR’s. Add Robert Meachum to this group and all of a sudden it becomes a dynamic and explosive set. Also, lets not forget Benn had a knee injury in year 1, so with a full season of healing and coming into his 3rd year, we can expect bigger things from him. Another intriguing guy is Chaz Schilens, he has had injury issues but if he is healthy he would be an absolute steal.

San Diego will not let him go. Mark it down. They will franchise him before that happens. Great WRs are not found on trees so the Bucs better gear up to draft one because even the FA ones will elect to go to another team with a better passing reputation. Tampa’s best bet is to draft for speed and cross their fingers.
February 4th, 2012 at 9:46 am
I would love this. That’s a huge target.
Nothing against Williams or Benn, but Jackson has proven to be better so far. If Benn and Williams blow up, lets get down on a bunch of 3 WR sets. All three block well so it may help our run game to run and pass out of the same formation.
February 4th, 2012 at 10:25 am
You know who should be on the BUCS radar? COACHES!!!!!!
February 4th, 2012 at 10:29 am
I’m sure if Dominik goes after Vincent he will come in second like he apparently does for every FA he goes after. I’m all for keeping Williams and Benn but we definetly need a top notch WR to stretch the field.
February 4th, 2012 at 10:32 am
I think you have to sign a guy like Jackson he is a true number one receiver with the ability to be a red zone nightmare in the nfc south. He would allow mike Williams to be a true number 2 receiver and benn,Parker, or briscoe to rotate at slot or put them in a spread 5 wideout set. But ultimately what I think dom does is pick up another TE that can pass catch to add along with winslow this is a copy cat league josh could sure use more options to become a more legitimate passer.

@Architek
V-Jax was under franchise tag last year and he will not stay in San Diego for another season. I personally love to see this, but The Glazers won’t do it.
February 4th, 2012 at 11:03 am
They will Franchise him, so let’s move on……
February 4th, 2012 at 11:15 am
Mike Williams isn’t over rated, he just has to learn how to beat the coverages he was seeing his second year. I’d love Jackson on the Bucs. I’d also like to see Blackmon get drafted by the Bucs.
February 4th, 2012 at 11:20 am
Commenting on the Buc’s radar is humorous. They don’t have radar, they are still using Morris Code.
February 4th, 2012 at 11:37 am
Seems very few on our offense can truly be judged due to lack of coaching. I agree with Joe that the jury is still out for most of our offensive side of the ball. On the contrary for our defense. Outside of the D-line it should be a blood bath when deciding who stays and who goes (to the barstool).
February 4th, 2012 at 11:46 am
@passthebuc – Morris code – touche.
But seriously Joe just enjoy the SuperBowl and stop ‘trying’ to make news for the Bucs. This post and the Payton Manning one are just pure FANTASY.
Besides what good would it be to have Vincent Jackson in Tampa is you don’t have a QB who can get him the ball? Wait I know bring in Payton Manning AND Vincent Jackson right?
Hey since we’re doing fantasy wishes how about getting Ray Rice in the backfield as well?
February 4th, 2012 at 11:47 am
Oh by the way – since the Bucs will be getting a new OC you better forget about having Benn on the field in 2012 because it will take him a full year to learn the playbook. It appears that Arrelious Benn went to the Ochostinko school of NFL playbook comprehension!
February 4th, 2012 at 11:55 am
What about Desean Jackson? Isn’t he going to be available? I don’t know that the Eagles would be able to afford to pay him would they? I haven’t heard anything about them having plans to franchise him either. Has anyone else?
February 4th, 2012 at 12:14 pm
@MichBucsFan
He mentioned on PFT like a month ago that he was sorry for how he acted and would take the franchise tag
February 4th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
@Michiganbuc
I’ve heard nothing but stories about how they’ll franchise DeSean Jackson. They aren’t going to just let him walk.
Vincent Jackson won’t be tagged, but he will have a new long term deal with San Diego.
February 4th, 2012 at 1:54 pm
@mrlucky really? He dosent have a Qb to get him the ball?? Shows how much you know about football… I guess 25 tds dosent mean squat.
February 4th, 2012 at 2:03 pm
0I think that no FAs will want to come here because the way it looks like we wont have our coaches hired yet! How are we going to talk business with the FAs when we wont have a playbook to show them hell if one of these top FAs did some how come here they would probably spend most of the offseason without a damn playbook and then in july when we have a coach they can learn a playbook! (maybe)
February 4th, 2012 at 2:50 pm
OMG. ><
What a stupid thing to say. How 'bout we get an OC in here that can call some plays for them? How 'bout we get a true no.1 receiver so they can get open? How 'bout we use Blount on third down to, God forbid, confuse the opposing defenses once in awhile and maybe MW and Benn will get open?
Mike Williams is a stud no.2 receiver and Benn's only had one full year with crappy coaching.
Moral of the story:
You don't cut your finger off to remedy a splinter.
February 4th, 2012 at 2:52 pm
Canadian, relax, it is Super Bowl week, the league does not allow team announcements during SB week. I am sure we will here all sorts of stuff next week.
February 4th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
Oops…hear not here…
February 4th, 2012 at 3:03 pm
Mike Williams is a number 2 at best!
Our receivers sucked bad last year, if they were anything great we could’ve actually scored points and moved the ball downfield better!!
Williams is alright, Benn has been a disappointment. Again, we were saying the same thing that we did last offseason last year. He had a knee injury and we all kept saying how great we would be once we got him back in 2011. Well…….that didn’t happen!
Vincent Jackson has already been tagged before by San Diego, I don’t think that’ll happen again. It’s either the contract he wants or he’ll go elsewhere.
Pay money and get a top receiver!! Bowe, D. Jackson, and V. Jackson would all be very good. Pierre Carcon would be a good option as well, and if we want to bring in a veteran…..Reggie Wayne would be great. There’s more I haven’t mentioned probably.
February 4th, 2012 at 3:46 pm
Genocide
You missread his comments.
He said don’t give up on them but bring in a vet wr who can draw def pressure off our young guys.
I agree.
February 4th, 2012 at 5:25 pm
NFW this deal happens. Domass can’t even get coordinators in One Bucs Place.
February 4th, 2012 at 5:47 pm
Ah so now everyone wants an experienced wide out.
Where were you for the last two years, especially in 2010 when some really good ones could have been picked up for a song.
Instead we got Reggie Brown.
February 4th, 2012 at 6:52 pm
@Eric
It’s a new day. Anything can happen from here on out.
@MTM
I’m sure we’ll start the season with no coordinators or coaches on staff. Right? Chill out, man…and try learning patience. It’ll happen.
Look, we already know it’s going to take at least 2 years for Schiano to get this team where he wants it, so you’re going to have to learn patience at some point or else you’re in for a miserable time the next couple seasons.
February 4th, 2012 at 7:13 pm
@ Pete Dutcher why do give the Glazers a 2yr window after 3yrs of the Raheem/ Dom experiment. What are running PR for the Glazers. The reason the majority of fans are disgusted is the lack of urgency by the Glazers to have a coach in place. How many blow out losses does it take to put a plan in place to replace your head coach. Sorry I’m not falling the BS anymore.
February 4th, 2012 at 8:53 pm
@Pete Dutcher……..I think we’ve been patient enough. Haven’t made the playoffs since ’07 and have been embarrased completely since 2009.
Why are you cutting the Glazers so much slack?
“Look, we already know it’s going to take at least 2 years for Schiano to get this team where he wants it”
Boy, you’re sure ok with losing, aren’t you?!?
February 4th, 2012 at 9:20 pm
can someone tell me what happened to Justin at 620? Hes was the best guy on there. Just saying.
February 4th, 2012 at 9:48 pm
or we could just draft justin blackmon
