Schiano Will Pick His Staff

The dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, of WDAE-AM 620, made it a point today, several times, to share rockstar general manager Mark Dominik’s words to him delivered during a brief break in his show.
Duemig said Dominik called him to ask him to please inform his audience that Greg Schiano will be picking his staff and Dominik will simply be working on their contracts, as well as tossing names at Schiano if he’s looking for referrals during the process.
Of course, Joe knows many fans think Dominik has fresh new marionette strings for Schiano and this new era is nothing more than Dominik’s second puppet regime.
Joe, however, doesn’t buy into that nonsense. Joe believes Schiano will control selection of his staff.
As for Schiano filling holes in free agency in 2012, Joe’s not so sure how that will go down. All Joe can say is the cash question flies out the window in 2013, when every NFL team will be forced to spend nearly the same amount on player salaries.

This may be the biggest difficulty of signing on late.
I certainly hope he gets some quality assistants. Hearing that he will sign a D coordinator is certainly a step in the right direction….not trying to do that and HC. Rah tried to do too much and didn’t have barely any other adults in the room when trying to “mature” the young guys.

There is no way that Schiano takes this job for the modest raise (2.3 to 3) if Dom controlled who is assistants are. That is a recipe for another debacle.
Hopefully, Dom has learned that football needs to be left to the football guys. Dom can draft and fill in the terms of the contract etc, but Dom should no more be making roster decisions than Hawaiian after 1/2 dozen pina coladas – actually Hawaiian’s analysis might improve at that point.
Bottom Line: we have a head coach to be excited about!

This should have been obvious to anyone listening with an open mind to the presser. Schiano has a formula in place and will need his people in place to follow through with it. Like Thomas said, he didn’t take this job without the understanding that he was the X’s and O’s guy, and that includes staff, and Dominik is the Front Office Exec. who takes care of contracts and trades and things of that nature. I’m sure Dominik will have a huge hand in the draft and free agency and he should.
I strongly believe that Dominik has assembled a very good group of players here that Morris and his staff just couldn’t get the most out of. Schiano will get more out of these guys than Morris could and will have more concrete schemes in place than the flip flopping back and forth that Morris did from one idea to the next.

Sorry not that simple Travis they could spend 80% of the floor in 2013 and then 90% of the floor in 2014 and then the cap in the final years and still comply. It’s in the CBA. You can read it for your self

Lucas is right but not thinking it through. Right now they are approx 50% (63 mil of 120 mil cap) of the 2013 cap.
To get to the 3 year average of 90%, you are going to have to get much closer by 2013.
Because you can’t get to 90% over three years if you are at even 60% for one of those 3 years bc 100% + 100% + 60% doesn’t equal a three average of 90%.
The real question is what is the penalty. Our cheap a– owners may just pay a fine if it is less than what they would be forced to spend.

Thomas the penalty is just to pay the players what they would’ve been paid if they would’ve met the floor in the three-year average is 1314 and 15 so what’s going on now does not matter that is why I use the example I did so might want to rethink that he didn’t think it through comment

The part I meant about not thinking it fully through is – they are going to have to spend 40+ million additional per year to get your hypothetical 80% number in 2013.
That is considerable money on players that MUST be spent between now and 2013 to even get to 80%.
It was apparent to me that you didn’t know that we were only at 63 mil and 50% of the cap this year.
Yes they can spend nothing more next year, and then wait until 13 to get to the minimum 70% and then go the additional 30% in 14 and 15. That is a mandatory HUGE increase in player salaries from where we are today (rock bottom). The Rays have a 25 man roster and spend the same and the Magic have a 12 man roster and are in the ballpark.
Thanks to the CBA the Glazers can only steal (basically) money for 1 more season.

Thomas the penalty is only to pay what they should’ve paid if they were stealing money as you suggest they would just stay well below the floor has an interest free loan all the way to 2016. Also 40 million in cash layout is not that much to make up with all the players that they have that they could restructure plus free agents. Only idiots who think of things like they are stealing money worry about stuff like you’re worrying about my example was intended to point out to idiots who say things like stealing and cheap all the time that if they were really those things they would simply ignore the floor has an interest free loan. Payroll is low because of a decade of horrific drafting. With the exception of Joseph this year they have not re-signed a premium pick in almost a decade

The whole reason Dominik called up 620 this afternoon, and made it a point to tell Steve to tell the world that message, was because of Shaun King today. King spent 3 hours ragging on Dominik (some points justly, some un-justly) but wouldn’t shut up about how he couldn’t fathom Dominik picking assistant coaches or something like that.
I tuned him out, it was horrible Friday afternoon radio, and whenever i tried back to see if he got over it and moved on, nah bro. It was such an obsessive rant on Dominik, that I’m starting to think Thomas and Saun King are the same person, lol.

Exactly Big Pic Guy. And just look what they did with picks they had. One example is they drafted Cadilac instead of Rogers. Cadillac cost the Bucs zero. Rogers signed a 65 million extension

I just went back and watched his whole press conference (I only caught the second half earlier) and I can see why this guy did so well at Rutgers. He would make one hell of a recruiter!
If he can coach as well as he can hold a presser we are in good hands. Unfortunately I think we are in for one ugly season. He has an awful lot on his plate to deal with this season.
I hope he can put together a solid staff.
After watching that press conference I would be shocked if the Bucs don’t spend significant money and/or draft picks on a burner WR.

Good point too, Lucas. Tho sometimes you get Cadillac, and other times you get Adrian Peterson. And while not signing a former 1st round and 2nd round pick this offseason certainly lowered the potential salary cap level of this team, you would have to hope at least 1 of those 4 premium picks we gave up would have panned out to be a pro-bowler, another one hopefully decent and maybe the other 1 or 2 could be busts. But total that would be guys now making between 20-30 mil a year in their primes.
So hypothetically speaking, add that all up plus Caddy and Ruud resigning and you have between 30-40 million dollars that the Glazers COULD have been spending these last few years, working within their mantra of “build through the draft and resign the ones you want.” But they didn’t, some bc of circumstance, some bc those picks sucked or were traded (and 1 who later died, RIP Gaines Aadams) and some bc of choice to let them go this offseason.
This team has had a TERRIBLE core for the last 10 years, since the Superbowl winning one left. The only guy who has panned out has been Joseph. To spend money on FA’s would be like throwing money into the wind off of Albert Haynesworth’s almost-was yacht in the bay.
I just really hope that Schiano brings in some stability to this core group of high recent draft picks, like he says he will. Basically, do what Dungy brought back to the Wyche era high draft picks back in the day. I believe he will be able to do this bc all his former assistants at Rutgers are assistants in the NFL now, and the player talent he has sent to the NFL isn’t just talent, its impressive talent generally speaking.
I just hope to God that the Glazers are either able to financially support this guy to the fullest extent possible, NO MATTER THE CBA RULES, or sell the team to someone who will. I think the Bucs just scored a gem of a HC who can even outcoach some of Dominik’s mistakes.

The Bucs have some very athletic players that had major consistency problems, but even our worst players had good days. Its like Jim Harbaugh getting Alex Smith, a guy who defined the word “Bust” in so many ways. We have a number of Alex Smith’s on this team and maybe the right coach can make them all better and more consistent players. Harbaugh didn’t just get Alex Smith up to snuff but many players that were underachieving. We could have a very similar situation in Tampa that may need some minor tweaking with better coaching instead of a major overhaul. Just a thought, but if we have a good draft and I hope to hell they put more emphasis on strength, diet and conditioning, this could happen sooner rather than later. But, I’ve said that before and been wrong before. I have a good feeling about Schiano.

Did anyone watch the Insider video posted on the Buccaneers.com website after the presser videos?
Greg Schiano said something that really sounded like Marty was a possible contender for OC. He said that it would have to be someone that is a proven teacher and so on…I swear he was describing Marty without saying his name.
One a side note…made my wife sit down and watch the presser…she said, “Give him bigger ears, darker skin and have him lose a little weight, and he’s Tony Dungy!”
I got a laugh out of that one.
He reminds me of a combination of Tony/Bill (NE)…soft spoken like Tony, and commanding like Bill. This bodes well for Tampa.
My FAVORITE answer in the presser was when Rock asked about the failure rate of college coaches, and how every year in the NFL, there are more firings of “experienced” coaches than college coaches. That was the best answer he gave in the whole presser, lol.

Bellichick misses on premium picks often, Chad Jackson as an example – but Bob Kraft spends money for Wes Welker when Chad Jackson fails. The Glazers, well they just let us suck.

I wonder how many fans out there think Shaun King and Ian Beckles should pick the assistants and coordinators to work under Coach Schiano? After all, they’ll tell you how qualified they are, certainly smarter than any GM’s out there.
And when you look at their stellar playing careers here, how can you not respect their dedication to the Buccaneers?

While I agree that Shaun King was over the top in his Dominick witch hunt, Ian Beckles was just being a realist by looking at the Glazers recent history and simply stating that no one will suceed as a coach if the Glazers dont spend $$$ in free agency.
We have so many holes on the back 7 of the defense the only way to repair it is via free agents, its up to the Glazers to greenlight Dominick to spend some $$$

Thomas we drafted Clayton instead of s Jackson who signed a 50 million extension. Anyway do this one time. Start with the 1997 draft of R Anthony and W Dunn (Dunn was not resigned due to cap issues) and work forward in time to the present day (Joseph) and count how many 1st thru 3rd round picks were resigned. Then look at the actual drafts and you will see how horrific our drafting has been No franchise qb and only resigning Booger (then trading him) and Clayton (them cutting him -seriously how dumb are you to use Clayton as an example when the discussion is about payroll and he was cut. You realize that his impact on payroll iz zero right?) leads to no payroll.
As for you Belicheck example, all teams miss on prius picks occassionally but occassional misses are my the point. The point is the Bucs CONSISTENTLY missed for basically a decade
