Report: Five-Year Deal For Greg Schiano

January 26th, 2012

Now Joe, of course, has no clue about the granular details of Greg Schiano’s head coaching contract with the Buccaneers. There could be more fancy clauses than a family reunion at the North Pole.

But BSPN is reporting Schiano has a five-year deal done and is, in fact, hired. Five Years!

That’s a big commitment from Team Glazer, especially when you consider Raheem Morris, already a member of the Bucs’ family when he got the head coaching job, only was granted a two-year deal with a team option for two more.

    F’ing awesome.

  2. RCH Says:

Im excited to move forward and to see what other piecies we can get in place. I like this choice for HC better then the rest of the finalists that were mentioned and am going to give this guy his fair shake of things. I just hope the rest of the Buc fans will do the same. Go Bucs!!!!!

  3. TampaRob Says:

if true the contract duration is the biggest thing in hiring quality assistants. If good people are going to come they need to know that they will have a chance to succeed. This is a step in the right direction.. nobody knows if he’s going to do a good job or not- I think most fans thought Saban and Petrino were going to be great- and I remember (was it on the old Sportsradio 910 or 820.. I can’t recall) that locals blasted Dungy as a perennial bridesmaid that was too low-key to ever win here.

  4. flmike Says:

I hope they give him the whole 5, it’s gonna take this season alone to just get headed in the right direction…

  5. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    I absolutely LOVE this hire

Hard nosed, disciplinarian who turned Rutgers into a pretty respectable program. Go Bucs

  6. sandbagrudy Says:

masking tape and chains to weigh down the dead weight. man overboard Talib, Jones, miller, winslow, these guys are going to get wacked Greg the Sandwich Schiano and some friends of his are comming heavy from jersey

  7. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    sandbagrudy

Now they are “friends of ours”

  8. Garv Says:

    GREAT HIRE!

Now, let’s hire a staff and GET TO WORK!!!

Good job Glazers and Dominik on this one, I’m impressed and grateful.

  9. K2theSoldier Says:

Seems like a good guy. I like the hire, but pray he’s allowed to get a good staff around him.

  10. Bucfish Says:

Being a USF fan, I’ve always respected Schiano. I can’t wait to see who his coaches will be and what he does to this Bucs roster.

    First, Miller is GREAT depth.
Second, Winslow actually played for the man and is still a GREAT player.

I agree with the others…provided we wait to see if Talib is suspended or put in jail…or if he has another incident.

  12. Brown Bag Crumped Up, Baby! Says:

    Ok. So, Marty for OC?

  13. Tye Says:

Welcome to the Bucs, Greg Schiano! Best of luck to you…. Wishing you a long AND successful career as the Bucs HC!!!!!

  14. atrain300 Says:

I love the hire; great job Dominick/Glazers. Even more thankful it wasn’t Sherman.

  15. ClayBURN94 Says:

I hope we are patient with Schiano being that its probably going to take a while to clean up this debale that RAH RAH left. Id let him coach all 5 years of his contract to see where he can take us. Finally got a new head coach! GO BUCS!!

  16. Chris FWC Says:

    per Joe:
“There could be more fancy clauses than a family reunion at the North Pole.

    LOL! Now that’s funny!

    And yes Roy Miller BBBBBBBBBBBBBlows!

  17. MTM Says:

    Welcome to Tampa “Not Sherman”.

  18. Buddhaboy Says:

Love it. This guy always beat Usf with inferior talent. Hard nosed, young, energetic. I could tell the glazers would looking for a young guy with long term potential. I think that was the key for the glazers. Good job glazers and Dom, as much as i hate to say it.

Schiano, get in there and kick some booty. Glazers, give this man something to work with…..

  19. Bucfish Says:

Out of all the coaches hired this year in the NFL, I like Schiano the best. Fisher would have been flashier, but I believe Schiano will end up being a better choice for our team and our town. Philbin was an OC, but he never called the plays. Mularkey was a retread that did an okay job as Atlanta’s OC with all that talent on offense. I think Romeo will do a great job in KC, but he was never really on the open market. Pagano gets credit for the Ravens D like every coach that ever coached in GB gets credit for developing Favre – I’m not buying it! Dennis Allen in Oakland…..enough said. I’m just glad we’re not talking about Sherman anymore…

  20. sandbagrudy Says:

Hey Bucfish he’s going to introduce some his roster to the fishes New Jersey style two to the back of the head off the back of the boat. Oh Yeah Douche Miller is like a turnstile he got spun on the run every play and Winslow was part of the problem never practiced and was always in Freemans ear total distraction

  21. Higher728 Says:

I’m excited about this. And I am grateful the Glazers actually took some time to find the right coach instead of hiring the first fast-talking jackass to walk through the door.

  22. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

From Jersey to the beautiful shores of Tampa Bay.

    Welcome to paradise Schiano’s

  23. buccin cane Says:

was reading on PR the he is gonna “preside” over the defense…a lil help understanding would be great guys….does this mean hes gonna wear two hats ala Raheem or does this mean with his defensive background hes gonna have alot of say over his DC and scheme?

  24. Garv Says:

I think this hire, Greg Shciano, is one we can all get behind.
He’s a HC the players HAD BETTER GET behind.
Can’t wait to hear who ends up on his staff and hope to hell the Glazers back him up with FA money and Dominik with as solid draft.

Exciting times my friends…….no more threat to give up those tickets now….LOL

  25. Pete Dutcher Says:

I REALLY hope he does not wear 2 hats. That would be a huge mistake.

  26. buccin cane Says:

Never really followed Rutgers football…any info on the type of defensive scheme this guy runs?

  27. chargedcbh Says:

Just when you think you have the answers, the Glazers changes the question! You never know with them…. Very curious about who the OC will be….. Have you heard anything Joe? Maybe someone they interviewed already.

  28. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Renewing my season tickets now. I am excited and really like this pick. I am going to be there on day one of camp at One Buc Place, so I can watch him beat the living stuff out of the “players” we have on our team. At the ones who are left after his purge. Bet you after camp Geraldine McCoy wont complain about it being hot on opening day.

  29. Pete Dutcher Says:

    Adam on wdae

  30. Wisconsin Bucs fan Says:

Good hire. Thank God it wasn’t Sherman.

  31. mjmoody Says:

I live in the Big East with Louisville. Certainly more excited about this decision than a lot of the other names circulating. Most are saying, and I agree, OC choice will speak volumes. Thank you Joe. Been on the edge of my seat waiting for any choice. Can’t watch every site for info. Thanks for being up to the minute reporting without perpetuating rumors.

  32. sandbagrudy Says:

So is he bringing Paulie and Silvio Dante with him or is he going with uncle Junior and Bobby Bacala

  33. Bucfish Says:

I think Winslow should go too, but if you listen to some of the Bucs players recently (Davin Joseph and Josh Freeman come to mind), they speak highly of him. I just don’t see it. He still has great hands, but I don’t see the speed anymore and his open-field moves are comical – especially when he tries to hurdle like Blount.

  34. raphael Says:

hoping for Butch Davis DC and Marc Trestman OC

  35. Joe Says:

    chargedcbh:

Very curious about who the OC will be….. Have you heard anything Joe? Maybe someone they interviewed already.

No word. Not even Schefter has heard (he just said this on radio).

  36. OAR Says:

About time, let’s get this thing started, then! Hopefully he works out and rights this sinking ship! I was hoping for a HC with more NFL experience but hey atleast he has HC experince! I’m sure a lot of his success will depend on his OC and DC. Here’s to hoping they are the right ones, too!

  37. Pete Dutcher Says:

Is it just me, or does this hired feel like a Dungy-style hire?

  38. Macabee Says:

Now that it’s done, I’m all in! In the words of my favorite coyote killer, Les Johnson – “Let’s git ta huntin’ “.

  39. cspann Says:

i have mixed feelings about the hire, i was kind of hoping for Zimmer

  40. Bobby Says:

I have to laugh when I read the positive posts from people who were calling the Glazers idiots just yesterday and saying all the good candidates had already been hired. Apparently not…..

  41. T in Orlando Says:

Look for the Bucs draft to have a Big East flavor to it (I’d say 3 or 4 of the picks coming from one of those schools).

  42. bucfanjeff Says:

I would love it if he would snag Billick as OC, Del Rio as DC – long shot I know.
Clements would be good too, but I think he can’t.

  43. sandbagrudy Says:

so everything will be revealed tomorrow after the presser more than likely?

  44. Pete Dutcher Says:

    Naw…Clements is out unfortunately.

I would take Marty as OC personally. He and Greg would seem to be compatible.

  45. stevek Says:

So glad we have a Coach before the Senior Bowl.

Schiano is a great leader. He wasn’t scared and took over a putrid Rutgers program, and made them into a respectable program.

He should turn this thing around for us. I am optomistic.

Now, time to rid ourselves of the LAZY and SELFISH players on this roster.

I hope Ronde stays one more year, he deserves better than 4-12. I give him my best, and 100% respect if he wants to go play for another team.

  46. Joe Says:

    bucfanjeff:

I would love it if he would snag Billick as OC

LOL Man, you are obsessed with Brian Billick. Next time Joe sees him Joe will advise Billick to hire you as his agent. 🙂

  47. Marques Says:

I’m going to take a wait and see approach to this hire and give the guy a chance. Lets see who his OC and DC are.

Although my first impression is this. “If Peter King really likes him” we are in big trouble.

    Lets hope I’m wrong.

Is it me or does the picture kinda remind you of Raheem ? just sayin.

  48. K2theSoldier Says:

Gimme Del Rio as DC. I’ll be a happy man.

  49. K2theSoldier Says:

And no Marques, he’s absolutely nothing like Raheem.

  50. Rickster Says:

    Bet sherm is PISSED.

  51. RCH Says:

I would love to see Marty as our OC and Del Rio as our DC but I dont think it will happen for 2 reasons.
    1) I think Schiano has a few other people in mind already
    2) Hiring former NFL HC for coordinator positions for a first time NFL HC might be intimidating to him

  52. King lewis Says:

Yay no more jettison from Joe!!!! Well maybe one or two more 🙂

  53. stevek Says:

Raheem and Schiano are not similar.

    Schiano can actually coach D.

  54. jdog Says:

    @ bucfanjeff

What’s up with your obsession with billick? Get over it already he’s not coming here. Last time I checkedhe hasn’t had an interview since he was fired in Baltimore. If you have a problem with that write goodell a letter.

  55. Jared Says:

“I have mixed feelings about the hire, i was kind of hoping for Zimmer.”

I think we got a younger and better Zimmer.

Furthermore I have read a couple of posts wanting Marty as OC. Act like you know about football people Marty is a defensive coach. He is a linebacker, linebacker’s coach, defensive coodinator, and then head coach. Where does OC fit in?

  56. kh Says:

    2) Hiring former NFL HC for coordinator positions for a first time NFL HC might be intimidating to him
    ________________________

Well considering he’s hiring Butch Davis as his DC so you can throw your theory out the window. He’s a grown man, why would he be intimidated by hiring other coaches? the object for him is to win and see out his 5 year contract, he’s going to do whatever it takes to do that.

  57. kh Says:

  58. Jared Says:

Also Billick’s offenses in Baltimore, how many of those were elite? No, wait not elite even, how many of those were considered in the top half of the league? No, wait, how many of those offenses were serviceable? The thing that made Billick look like an offensive genius was RANDY MOSS!!! Billick is garbage get over it!

  59. gotbbucs Says:

Good Lord, can we stop already with the Brian Billick crap. He is to offense what Raheem is to defense.

…Well considering he’s hiring Butch Davis as his DC…

Source? I thought Davis is under contract?

  61. jvato24 Says:

Where is it confirmed Butch Davis is coming here ??

  62. sandbagrudy Says:

wdae just reported Tony Soprano is a friend of his I told you fools he was a made guy

  63. jvato24 Says:

wdae just reported Tony Soprano is a friend of his I told you fools he was a made guy

Can anyone translate this for me ??

  64. gotbbucs Says:

    @pete

He’s not coaching UNC anymore if that’s the contract you’re talking about. He got canned last year.

  65. Joe Says:

A few years ago when Rutgers played in a bowl game in Arizona, James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) was on the Rutgers sidelines the whole game.

  66. K2theSoldier Says:

It’s not confirmed anywhere that Butch Davis is coming here.

  67. Joe Says:

    jvato:

Where is it confirmed Butch Davis is coming here ??

First Joe heard of it. Not an hour ago, Adam Schefter said he heard of no assistants hires.

Joe is guessing that Schiano may hire Butch Davis and/or Tom Bradley since he worked with both of them and both are currently looking for work.

  68. Chris FWC Says:

Gandolfini sounds more mob than Soprano.

    Talib…youre WHACKED!

  69. jvato24 Says:

Would be nice to see both of them here !! I need to look more info on Tom Bradley

  70. Jerry Says:

Only $2.5 million per year according to Yahoo.

Glazers saving money over last year already!

  71. Dway Says:

I think the Glazers/Dom are geniuses on this one. They dangle Sherman in front of us and say he’s the front runner to piss us off; after that anyone they bring in will generate positive feedback. Genius!

Not to takee anything away from our new HC I like everything I’ve heard about him, but I can’t decide if im more excited about it being him or it not being Mike Sherman.

  72. sandbagrudy Says:

So is he going to change the name of the dollhouse to the Bada Bing and hire Tony Siragusa as his driver

  73. jvato24 Says:

I wonder if his Uncles ever beat him ??!

  74. kh Says:

They’re paying Raheem and Gruden still. Hardly saving money.

  75. Jared Says:

They’re not paying Gruden, they’re not paying Raheem, and that $2.35 million line you read was his SALARY AT RUTGERS!!!!! No confirmed details about the contract have been released. LEARN TO READ YOU NEGATIVE A-HOLE!!! I would expect the contract to be close to Kelly’s offer.

  76. stevek Says:

    Tony Siragusa = Luca Brasi

  77. sandbagrudy Says:

Zutah siad he won’t wack anyone until he determines how well they earn.

  78. kh Says:

They’re not paying Gruden, they’re not paying Raheem
    _____________________

yes, they are. Raheem was under contract for next year, so the Glazers have to make up the difference between his salary for next year and his salary in Washington. Gruden hasn’t taken a coaching gig so the Glazers are on the hook for the last year of his contract.

  79. sandbagrudy Says:

just don’t burn his horse and you’ll be alright

  80. Jared Says:

They are officially not paying Gruden. Last year was the end of that.

  81. gotbbucs Says:

    @kh

    Right on Raheem
    Wrong on Gruden

  82. bucfanjeff Says:

I realize Billick isn’t coming here and thats ok, but I think he deserves more credit than he’s given. He has a good offensive mind and he’s willing to adapt to his players. Personally, I don’t think you see many coaches adapt to their players. It seems they usually try to fit players into their system – which is wrong.
I’m sure there are other good candidates out there. I want us to have an aggressive offense, attacking style – and I don’t think Schiano fits that mold.

  83. bucfanjeff Says:

I believe the Gruden paychecks are in the final year which ends in March.

  84. T in Orlando Says:

I thought once a coach was hired by another NFL Team, the team that fired him no longer owed him anything else left on the contract?

Raheem was hired by the Redskins. Tampa shouldn’t owe him anything.

  85. ty Says:

i dont think raheem will be payed because he took the job with the redskins

  86. jvato24 Says:

Everytime I look at the pic above … it confuses me … What up with his arm ?? Looks like his thumb is on the wrong side ??

  87. gotbbucs Says:

    @bucfanjeff

I might be off by a little bit, but I’m pretty sure the year that Baltimore won the Super Bowl the Ravens offense failed to score an offensive TD in about half of their games.

  88. jdog Says:

@bucfanjeff…Willing to adapt to his players? Is that why is offenses were so good? Cmon man!

  89. Cmurda Says:

This may have been mentioned and I apoliogize in advance if it has but Schiano as coach is now 100% completed according to the Bucs Official site. No more fear of a change of mind.

  90. Joe Says:

I believe the Gruden paychecks are in the final year which ends in March.

    Feb. 1

  91. Niko (The Optimist) Says:

For those curious, Schiano appears to be a 4-3 guy, Rutgers seems to run it, and UM ran it back in the day.

Interesting idea, Jonathan Vilma played for Schiano when he was DC at UM. Vilma will be a free agent. Ray Rice is a Free Agent too.

For those who think College coaches can’t make it in NFL, WE ARE BUCS FANS!! We wrote the book on college coaches making it in the NFL with John McKay. At the time NO ONE thought it could really work. McKay did it with a college offense ( i formation).

  92. Cmurda Says:

@bucfanjeff To add on to jdog’s post. Billick runs anything but an aggressive, attacking style of offense. Do you not remember who he won the Superbowl with as his QB? Actually, it was a very conservative offense built around not turning the ball over and trusting the defense. That’s actually what I like. A la Dungy. I am under the impression that Schiano will run a similar style and that’s just peachy with me.

  93. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I really like this hire! He has changed Rutgers into a real team, not the joke they were before he got there. Hopefully he can do the same with us!

AND…wouldn’t it be awesome if Ray Rice decided to come here and play for his old coach who he has always raved about???? God, that would be awesome. Rice and Blount!!!!!

As long as he brings in good coordinators…we should be good! Key word is “should”. I would like to see us bring in Chud as our OC. Don’t know if that will happen. But he has been around 1bucplace and maybe he prefers it to Carolina!!!

  94. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Just imagine the amount of business cards he will pick up in Mobile this weekend. Pick of the litter for OC , DC and position coaches. He is going to Mobile isnt he?

  95. Bob Says:

As a Jersey Native Im very familier with Coach Schiano, I watch Rutgers play all the time very pro-style system, he is very enthausastic and holds the players accountable. Im very pleased with the hiring personally because i’ve always liked Schiano as a coach and I believe he will do very well in the pro’s.

  96. sm2 Says:

Is this a cost cutting move that will help Manchester United? Tampa could have got him months ago for a ham sandwitch. Why does it take so long to get this guy? I sure hope I’m eating crow in a few years.

  97. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And Joe…how old are we??? Still calling him “Bellicheat”??? “Come On Man”. That was years ago. And if you really believe they were the only team to do that then I have no clue how you have this site!!!

For Bellichek to compliment Schiano and say all those great things. Speaks volume for this guys credit!! I am a die hard Tarheels fan and this guy challenges us every season. I hate when we play them. I’m not saying UNC is great or even good. I’m just saying his team everyear is prepared and plays the butts off for this guy!! I love that in a coach! And he is still young in the HC circuit. But old enough for the guys to hopefully respect him as a man and a coach. Something Ra didn’t do well!

  98. Raphael Says:

    Belicheat. Cheats

  99. Brad Says:

Hearing that Mark is going to be involved in the assistant coach search makes me extremely nervous. He hired Raheem’s coaches. I hope the Glazers let the new HC hire his own guys. I’m very excited about the hire as long as Dominik doesn’t get power hungry and screws everything up.

  100. yar Says:

Can’t take Billick seriously since I saw him on the Match Game tv show years ago while he was a wannabe coach. He was bad really bad.

  101. adam from ny Says:

wow, i’m kind of impressed with this hire…..i was not expecting this at all….he is a good hard nosed head coach…let’s hope it carries over to the nfl…i’m liking this….slightly wowed over here!

ps he can bring us to at least mediocrity….he will not stand for being an nfl doormat….i don’t know if he will be great, but we shall see.

    adam from ny

  102. gotbbucs Says:

    Brad,
I think the big difference between Raheem and Shiano is that Raheem was just happy to be there and he never had to work for it. Schiano on the other hand has put in his time, and not easy time at that with regards to the Rutgers. I can not see Schiano sitting idle while Dominik picks his staff. Raheem probably just smiled and said “yea dog, whoever you want. I got this.” Schiano has a bit of a legacy I think that he wants to leave behind or he wouldn’t take these rough rebuild jobs.
Dominik will not walk all over this man like he could Morris.

  103. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

Niko, what did they call that play,” student body right” if i remember correctly

  104. Brad Says:

@gotbucs.. I hope your right. The fact Schiano seems to be well respected around the league has me very excited. Can’t wait for the 1:00 pm press conference to hear his philosophy.

  105. jvato24 Says:

Would it be wrong to hope for a Arians/Butch Davis,Tom Bradley combo ??? Hell throw in Mangurian on the O-LINE

  106. NickinMelb Says:

Its being said that Schiano won’t wear DC hat as Raheem did (no brainer) and that definitely leaves the door open for Butch Davis as DC. The guy led the Cowboys D during their hayday and we it would be awesome to have him and Schiano as head coach. Whats making me nervous is the OC position and Quarterbacks coach for Freeman but I definitely like this hire. Good job Glazers and this definitely took some guts and cash as well.

  107. jvato24 Says:

This guy has a little bit of THE CHIN going on

  108. Joe Says:

    jvato:

Would it be wrong to hope for a Arians/Butch Davis,Tom Bradley combo ??? Hell throw in Mangurian on the O-LINE

    Like that!!!

  109. Raphael Says:

@ gotbbucs I heard Doug Graber who worked with Shiano say; there is no way Shiano would let somebody else pick his coaching staff , Shiano is a control freak……I like what I am hearing!

  110. Garv Says:

Personally, just me, I’d rather have Dominik and Schiano put together the rest of the coaching staff, including the offensive and defensive coordinators.

I know it’s tempting to have message board posters do it, given our level of expertise and personal relationships with all the coaches available out there but I still think those who are paid a lot of money to be a Head Coach and General Manager in the NFL do it

Tough call though. Maybe they should consult Ian Beckles and Shaun King…..?

  111. Raphael Says:

    You think Garv. ….really ?

  112. GenocideD Says:

I’m excited about our new head coach. I’d prefer we hire a DC so he’s not jumping from college to the pros AND adding too much to his plate. Fist pumps to Joysie!

  113. CrispyBuc Says:

    Rick Stroud:
Per Kent Somers, Arizona Republic, Bucs seeking permission to interview Cards WRs coach John McNulty

  114. Garv Says:

    @Raphael

    Really.

    @GenocideD

After last season there is no doubt in my mind that the buccaneers will hire both an offensive and defensive coordinators and that those hires will be largely if not totally Greg Schiano’s choices. He’s coached in the NFL, has a lot of contacts and will get some qualified help.

GREAT FREAKING HIRE!!! ^5 Glazers and Dominik!

  115. CrispyBuc Says:

    Rick Stroud:
McNulty was the former Rutgers offensive coordinator under new Bucs coach Greg Schiano

  116. Raphael Says:

Yeah garv, it worked out so well last time they hired the oc and dc…..jagadzinski ring a bell…

  117. Garv Says:

    @Raphael

LOL Problem is, Raheem had no say in those hires, Jags OR Bates. Iit was Dominik. Had to be given the fact that Raheem had never been a Head Coach at ANY level and only a coordinators in college for one season.

But maybe your right. WE should tell ’em who to hire. I read a Sports Illustrated last week and have season tickets and you’re a regular poster here…..God KNOW we’re more qualified that Schiano and/or Dominik……..right?

Although I still think Ian Beckles and Shaun Kind should be consulted, “experts” that they tell themselves they are…………..

  118. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Raheem is not getting paid by the Glazers. There is no such thing as “paying the difference between the two salaries”. If that were the case, the Redskins would just pay him $1 and let the Bucs pay him the rest. I’m not sure where you got that from, but it is totally not true.

  119. raphael Says:

got it garv… I see you working now… thankfully it will be shiano who decides his coaches…
