Chip Kelly Speaks
January 23rd, 2012In a weekend that has been gluttonous on statements, from former president George H.W. Bush to (alleged) serial pedophile Jerry Sandusky, one has been released that Bucs fans can relate to.
That is the statement just issued by Oregon football coach Chip Kelly on his dalliance with Team Glazer and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik over possibly succeeding jettisoned coach Raheem Morris as the ninth head coach in Bucs history, via CollegeFootballTalk.com.
“I am flattered by the interest of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ organization. I enjoyed meeting with the Glazer family and General Manager Mark Dominik but after numerous discussions, I concluded that I have some unfinished business to complete at the University of Oregon.”
There are two ways to look at Kelly doing an about face at the Bucs. One is to breathe a sigh of relief. Rarely do college coaches succeed on the NFL level (and yes, Joe is well aware of what Jim Harbaugh, no stranger to the NFL himself, has done this year with the 49ers).
The second way of looking at this is a college coach rebuffed a chance to being able to put “NFL head coach” on his resume for a future college gig… if he ever left the NFL.
January 23rd, 2012 at 2:59 pm
@Joe
Can you stop reporting on Chip Kelly, he’s not gonna be our coach. Nothing to see here we can move on now.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:02 pm
Positive spin: if they interviewed Kelly without anyone knowing about it maybe there are others. I hope…
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:03 pm
Why would anyone ever leave the money of college football when you have a successful program to gamble with the finicky world of NFL coaching??? You can be king of the campus for as long as you keep winning and you want to trade that for the uncertainty of the NFL where FA’s leave your team and your coaches get gobbled up after a successful season leaving you to rebuild through the draft instead of recruiting. Uh uh….the Nick Saban’s of the world warn against the dangers of that.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:04 pm
@knucknbuc its the day after and that’s his job.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:05 pm
knucknbuc:
This is the biggest Bucs story since Raheem Morris was jettisoned. The traffic and number of comments on this site confirm this.
This is like saying, “Joe Paterno is dead, move along.”
This is the first time Kelly has gone on record about his flirting with the Bucs. It would be absurd not to touch upon it.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:05 pm
Boilerplate response.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:07 pm
Not the day after, THE day of.
Chip Kelly spurned the Bucs after midnight Oregon time. That’s just before dawn our time today, less than 12 hours ago.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:12 pm
S ok were stuck with sherm?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:17 pm
I don’t care at all about Kelly or Oregon now.
It’s not relevant, it’s over. I DO care about getting a competent HC we can all get behind, a guy who can pick a staff and get about the business of turning the Buccaneers into WINNERS AGAIN!
In fact, I doubt anyone cares about this story anymore but for Duck fans across the country. It can be reported, sure, but nobody gives a damn.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:23 pm
something spooked him, I would like to know what it was…
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:24 pm
More people give a damn what Joe writes as opposed to what commenters have to say. “You heard it here first” losers need to understand this.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:26 pm
I don’t like this. It’s starting to turn into a fiasco. The best thing for the Bucs would be for the Glazers to sell the team and stick to kickball.
1.) Chip Kelly was the wrong coach to go for.
2.) He doesn’t even want the job.
3.) What are the remaining coaches thinking about the Bucs now?
4.) Wasted time then jumped on Kelly like he was the next Gru.
5.) This, if anything, has shown what true hand the GLosers are willing to play.
Yeah they are now ‘willing’ to pay for a coach but why do it in this fashion?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:26 pm
Joe nig difference in Kelly and Harborough as you well know 1 has coached in the NFL before and runs a pro style offense and one runs a hybrid hurry up spread.Im breathing a sigh of relief he changes his mind…. The real story is why boosters are out bidding the Bucs even if they do own Nike!
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:27 pm
@Joe
A coaching legend dying is a little more important then a college coach backing out of negations for an NFL team. Not saying anything is wrong with it, but putting up stories about how he backed out is getting old fast. He didn’t want to come here we get it now we all can move on. I know it’s a slow season Joe for stories. But anyways I love the site keep up the good work.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:28 pm
No it’s plain and simple:
Look at Kelly’s resume. The only thing left to gain is a National Championship, and I think he believes he can win it again and the Pac-10 for a 4th year in a row. Good for him. He has a job waiting down the line, no doubt this is the right call for Kelly’s career, regardless of the condition of the Bucs job.
I really hope we interview Perry Fewell this week, while the window is open. He finds away to get the most out of his defensive line year in and year out, no matter injuries, depth or whatever. I mean, 6 sacks against the 49ers? Amazing game by their defense. And guess where we just invested the last 2 years of our draft?
Left at the alter by Spurrier, ended up with Dungy. Deja vu all over again? Just sayin maybe….
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:28 pm
So now what?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:29 pm
I’m NOT knocking Joe for reporting this, just commenting that it doesn’t matter WHY it didn’t happen. It didn’t and it isn’t going to happen. We still need a HC and THAT matters.
It IS a good sign the Glazers were willing, ARE willing, to go outside the box on this hire however. The easy way out would have been to hire mike Sherman two weeks ago. I think we’re still in for a surprise that may excite us as fans soon.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:29 pm
buCncRazy:
Why??? Three years as Oregon’s coach, three BCS games, one national title appearance.
The math is clear.
Phil Knight likes his team to win as much as Team Glazer wants their team to win. Plus, the cash Knight gives Oregon football is a tax writeoff. 🙂 Not sure Team Glazer can write off a coach’s salary.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:32 pm
knujcknbuc:
Sssooo…. Joe shouldn’t write about a Bucs game roughly 10 hours after the outcome has been decided? Right.
Please email all the local TV stations right away and tell them not to mention Chip Kelly in their evening newscasts. It’s old news. Make sure you email the local radio stations and remind them not to mention Chip Kelly in the afternoon drivetime shows. The deed is done. Move on to more pressing topics, like what goalie the Lightning should trade for.
Also, make sure Jack Sheppard and Duke Maas are alerted to stay away from any Chip Kelly mention in tomorrow’s newspapers. 🙁
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:32 pm
My bad Garv, not so much to knucklehead.
I’d have to think Marty, Clements, or Zimmer are top priority.
Wildcard being Les Miles
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:38 pm
at least he didnt decide to go mánage a baseball team.
everytbing will be ok.
no need to shoot the messenger. i admire the passion though.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:38 pm
Coaches can be very comfortable staying just where they are. Sure doesn’t hurt to know you are wanted and is also a great way to get a raise and contract extention from your current employer. Oh well… I want a coach that is not afraid to ruffle some feathers and would love to build the Bucs back into a lasting contender. I still think the Cheapsters are cheap with their dollars, at least until they sign a great coach and let him assemble his expensive staff and spend lots of money on free agents. Being 30 or 40 million dollars a year UNDER the freaking salary cap shows how cheap the Cheapsters really are. Show us you have changed, Cheapsters!
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:39 pm
Joe, the articles on Kelly are fine. I mean it freaking happened today, why are people complaining about stories?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:40 pm
Rob, they just offered a coach like $6mil. That’s hardly cheap.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:42 pm
It was a nice flirtation while it lasted. I credit the Glazers for the “out of box” potential. Sure is ashame the leak came out of Portland because people believe this somehow looks bad on the organization (Ira -you really need to retire because you suck-maybe try landing a scoop instead of writing crap about how Sherman is the front runner candidate-dope).
The Glazers swung and missed, at least they stepped up to the plate. I applaud them for the effort.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:44 pm
Anybody think there are other college coaching candidates?
Bob Stoops maybe?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:46 pm
@Meh. They only paid Raheem 2mill per year (I know he was overpaid lol). They will have to overpay for a coach now, and the coordinators will need Raheem like money to come here. Then, you factor in buying top shelf free agents and spending more of the cap dollars than in the last 4 or 5 years, that will show a true commitment they have not shown since they went after Gruden. They are not paying anyone 6 million per year yet. I hope they do and also that they spend about 30 or 40 million more on free agents they have been hoarding for several years. I’m just sayin….
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:49 pm
@Joe who says:
“Rarely do college coaches succeed on the NFL level (and yes, Joe is well aware of what Jim Harbaugh, no stranger to the NFL himself, has done this year with the 49ers).”
Joe – FYI. Tom Coughlin was a College Head Coach at Boston College before transitioning to the Jags and doing great work there and obviously in NewYork. Pete Carroll is doing a good job.
How about Jimmy Johnson? Miserable failure in Dallas after UM- sure.
How about here John McKay? John Robinson? Dick Vermeil.
Sean Payton was a College OC before being hire as NFL QB coach. Many of these guys have a coaching connection to the College game.
THIS IS A FRANCHISE THAT JUST EMPLOYED RAHEEM MORRIS AS HEAD COACH FOR 3 YEARS. There is no standard here, it can’t get lower than that. Stop acting as if this is an attractive situation to a high-value coach, it isn’t.
We have a dearth of talent, dearth of direction and the cheapest owners in the league.
If you were being tasked with rebuilding a dilapidated mansion – want you want the job with owners who would spare no cost in making the home perfect or the owners who wanted a perfectly constructed mansion on a shoestring budget? Easy choice.
That is how the football-world views this cheap a– franchise with little talent.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:49 pm
2 good points Meh. It’s just akward bc we have speculated on 8 coaches or so and none of them turned out to be the guy, so what is the point in moving on to who else we think it could be? Nobody knows what is going through Dominick and the Glazers’ minds.
I’m still banging the drum for Fewell. Found by Lovie Smith, paid his dues, and owned teams defensively with both the Bills and under Coughlin with the Giants.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:50 pm
Tom Clements Please. (added by Mobile using Mippin)
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:51 pm
WHAT?! The Lightning are trading for a goalie?! …Chip who? 🙂
Hardly dead news, like Paterno – may his alleged pedofile information withholding mind – rest in peace; sort of.
The bigger question is what are the Bucs going to do next?
Kirk Ferentz?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:51 pm
No clue.
As for the alleged $6 million/year salary, Joe has searched far and wide and cannot find any documentation of that. Joe knows who threw that out on Twitter and Joe asked for the source of the figures. No reply (yet).
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:51 pm
if u think about it chudz ran just as innovative an offense as kelly in the actual national football league.
and clements helped develop a guy to have one of the best passing seasons and mvp.
a blip in the road.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:54 pm
Jow what mean is whhat is so wrong with this HC job that a 6 million dollar offer and the fact thatChip was calling boosters in the middle of the night changing his mind and having to wait while other boosters ok it not the athletic director.Oregon had already offered the job to the OC they had to renegg.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:55 pm
Rob, I don’t believe any of that. They could take Chilly for dirt cheap if they wanted. Sherman isn’t going to demand a fortune. Chip Kelly was going to cost a fortune, and they still took a shot at him.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:55 pm
Interesting. This was posted last week in Oregon Media.
http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2012/01/ducks-football-chip-kelly-nfl-.html
Looks like Kelly’s agent is earning his money getting this story out so Kelly can get a bump in salary. Sad to see that the Glazers (amd us fans) are taking the hit. Other teams mow know what this fat basta@d is like now. A weasel..
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:55 pm
Joe, wasn’t Kelly’s buyout alone something like $3.5 mil?
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:56 pm
thomas:
Tom Coughlin was on Parcells’ staff with the Giants (along with Belicheat).
Yes, Jimmy Johnson came straight from college. No, Sean Payton did not.
For every coach you mention, Joe has several others including Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino and Steve Spurrier.
Before you mention Pete Carroll, he was an NFL guy who went to college and came back.
Bobby Ross was probably the last guy to come straight from college and have a decent run before Harbaugh.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:56 pm
nfl network is reporting 6 million offer.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:58 pm
Harbaugh was a QB c.oach for the Raiders before he took over Stanford
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:59 pm
bucncrazy:
Joe has no idea if Kelly was offered $6 million a year. That figure — until Joe sees documentation — is pure fallacy.
Joe also has no problem with Kelly using the Bucs to leverage more cash from Phil Knight. It’s called capitalism.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:59 pm
bucncrazy:
Linkage, please.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Actually, he was a college coach before Stanford at San Diego.
But how many years was Harbaugh an NFL quarterback?
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:01 pm
six million per season?
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:05 pm
Or like water off of a Ducks back!!
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:06 pm
Harbaugh was a QB coach for the Raiders. 02 03 which is before Stanford so he has NFL coaching esp.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:06 pm
wow what the heck does that do to negotiations with other coaches.
and now its almost like they gotta make a splash.
rockstar has a big job ahead.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:08 pm
marc trestman was the qb coach for raiders then i think.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:09 pm
Joe keep doing EXACTLY what your doing!!!! I don’t always agree with you but if people don’t like what your reporting on YOUR site, they can go to Pewter Report….. The Glazers are great poker players, you never know what they have planned. If they hired Cowher tomorrow, it wouldn’t surprise me. Thank you for all your info!!!!
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:10 pm
You guys forget that Gruden’s salary just came off the payroll. There is your $6 million a year right there.
The Glazers wouldnt be spending any more than they were last year. They are trying to trick you into thinking they are spending big bucks now when their budget for the team won’t change at all.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:11 pm
@ Thomas
Tom Coughlin – Wide Receiver coach for Philly, Green Bay and New York before he became the HC for BC.
Pete Carroll – DB coach or DC at Buffalo, Minnesota, NY, San Fran before becoming the HC for the Pats…where he bombed.
Sean Payton – NFL coaching experience before becoming an NFL HC.
Dick Vermeil – 1st ever special teams coach for the Rams before becoming Rams HC in 1974.
John Robinson – Oakland Raiders RB coach before becoming Rams HC.
John McKay – HC at USC for 15 years before becoming our HC.
Jimmy – Exception rather than the rule
Chip Kelly – Never has had an NFL job. Been a head coach for all of 3 years on any level.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:13 pm
Thanks chargedbh!
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:15 pm
Eric on the niners web site 02 03 offensive asst Raiders
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:20 pm
thats different than qb coach but what does it matter. he coached in nfl.
im shocked at six million rejected. damn.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:21 pm
@ eric
“if u think about it chudz ran just as innovative an offense as kelly in the actual national football league.
and clements helped develop a guy to have one of the best passing seasons and mvp.
a blip in the road.”
I agree completely. Not a big loss.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 pm
Fact, it was the Glazer’s decision to fire Gruden, and thus sticking themselves with his 5 mill per year. I think that is why they went the relatively inexpensive route with Raheem and company. Second fact, the Bucs have not spent CLOSE to the salary cap for the last 3 or 4 years. That is not a committment to winning. I hope they are willing to pay a top coach 5-6 million per year as reports suggest. Problem is, they also need to spend much, much, much more than that to convince valuable high priced free agents to come play in Tampa. This would be an about face for the Cheapsters. If they, the Cheapsters, were so commited to winning and putting the best team on the field, why didn’t we sign any of the available wide receivers, linebackers, and secondary players we needed last year. Show me I’m wrong about you Cheapsters, I’ll be glad you have had a change of heart.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:27 pm
@ Jerry
“The Glazers wouldnt be spending any more than they were last year. They are trying to trick you into thinking they are spending big bucks now when their budget for the team won’t change at all.”
I’m starting to subscribe to that theory as well. The spending habits (or lack thereof) over the past few years has left an indelible stain on our franchise’s reputation. The perception that the Glazers are cheap has become a reality in the eyes of the football world and until they prove otherwise I’ll continue to believe it as well.
The Glazers are running a bottom tier organization right now.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:32 pm
Giving Thomas facts are completely pointless. He will NEVER admit he was wrong. He will just continue to argue his point, or he will disappear. Just watch.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:36 pm
wait a minute they could not spend six million which is saving money.
convoluted económics there i think.
before the roasting lets see who they get.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:40 pm
Phil Knight http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/michael_rosenberg/01/06/oregon.knight/index.html
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:40 pm
…well, didn’t want him anyway….HOWEVER, I would say that this certainly means that whoever they do decide to hire will be an Offensive rather than Defensive guy…
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:43 pm
btw we also have a guy who has won 200 plus games in the league who would love to coach the bucs.
yes sir mr. scottenheimer heres your offer and if rockstar bothers you we will stuff him in a broom clóset.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:47 pm
Woulda, shoulda, coulda – it didn’t happen. We tried a splash move and it didn’t pan out.
The real question is what happens now?
The Glazers are going to have to move quickly now IMO.
Zimmer, Billick, Clements – you’re on deck.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:49 pm
@ eric
“wait a minute they could not spend six million which is saving money.”
But then there would be no doubt that they don’t want to spend any money. They no longer have the excuse of, “Hey I don’t want to spend big money on two coaches.”
However, if they keep spending what they’ve been spending (bottom third in the league on players & coaching staff) they can appease the fans with mediocrity while limiting their losses.
My two cents: Hey it’s not my money and you don’t have to pay a premium on every level, but at least spend us enough to get back to respectability.
January 23rd, 2012 at 4:53 pm
I just hope that whomever they pick as HC stayed at Holiday Inn last night cuz he’s gunna need it.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:00 pm
Translation:
I couldn’t get assurances from the Glazers and Dominik that we’d be players in free agency and that I could have final say over my coaching staff and player acquisitions.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:00 pm
Sure Hawaiian: the facts I tried for 3 years to pound into your head about how bad Rah and this football team truly were – was way off and wrong! Right. LOL
Your totally incorrect defense of the great Rah/Dom regime turned out to be frivolous, and conequently you look very foolish for the insults that you directed at me for saying that Rah and Dom had failed to put together a legit team.
Where is your boy now? LMAO! Is he assistant water boy in Washington? Second Assistant to the quality control intern? This hurts that I am laughing so hard – you thought he was Lombardi!!
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:10 pm
[Will have a story about this. — Joe]
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:17 pm
Thanks Real.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:19 pm
Conspiracy! Tony Dungy told Chip Kelly that the Bucs job was a bad one so that he could coach his son some more.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/12/dungy-thinks-chip-kelly-has-an-nfl-future/
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:24 pm
The main point of this all that you all are missing is Tampa is nowhere on the map of respectability and I keep saying this but outside of Tampa no one pays attention to the Bucs. No disrespect but the Bucs are like Davidson when talking about the majors colleges. This is no reflection of the region’s population but Dominik has disqualified the bucs legitimacy with the piss poor decision-making and poor drafts.
I can’t blame Kelly but what’s his qualifying factor? A spread high tempo offense? He has his share of discipline issues at Oregon so once again chasing waterfalls and taking risks continue to plague Dominik.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:44 pm
Thomas,
I’m sorry, is that what this article is about? Are you avoiding the facts laid out before you on those successful college coaches? Nice try buddy. Doesn’t work.
I supported Raheem, yes. I don’t regret that one bit. He went 10-6 with the youngest team in the NFL, he deserved that. Was I wrong, obviously. So what? I stand by the fact that he did a great job in 2010, and a miserable one in 2011. His firing was justified, and I have moved on. I haven’t brought up his name one way or the other. I wish him well, but he’s with the Redskins now so best of luck to him. By the way, him being a Secondary Coach (or assistant water boy) is a helluva lot further in coaching than you will ever be. He is more successful of a man than you will ever be, because I guarantee you he has more important things in his life than going on a blog site and continually trashing people (that are on your team for God’s sake). So you can pound your little chicken chest all you want and celebrate his failure, but always know that you could only dream of being that big of a failure.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:55 pm
Like I said earlier, notice how Thomas reacts when his points are proven wrong by facts. All he has to say was, “my bad, I didn’t realize all those guys had NFL experience”. But he will NEVER type those words. Just continue to follow, he will continue to prove me right. I may not be good at analyzing football, but I can sure as hell predict an arse hole’s next move.
January 23rd, 2012 at 6:22 pm
I agree that they need to spend on free agents too. They also need to spend on the coordinators.
January 23rd, 2012 at 6:22 pm
Thomas is sure right about the pop star. I was a Rah supporter also but have moved on. I truly wish Rah the best of luck, coaching here was pretty much career suicide. Someday he’l get another chance, someday….
January 23rd, 2012 at 6:31 pm
Thomas never said a negative word about Dominik until Raheem was fired. Look it up, not one word. In fact, he gave him a few compliments. It was all Raheem’s fault in his eyes. Now that Raheem has gone, he is constantly attacking Dominik. If I didn’t know any better, I would assume Thomas just wants to b!tch about something. Go ahead Thomas, try and deny it. You’ve already shriveled up on the last point, so here’s some more bait for you.
January 23rd, 2012 at 6:32 pm
@ Hawaiian
“Like I said earlier, notice how Thomas reacts when his points are proven wrong by facts. All he has to say was, “my bad, I didn’t realize all those guys had NFL experience”. But he will NEVER type those words.”
LMAO! This is true. Thomas has the innate ability to pu pu so many moves made that something has to stick eventually!
However, I’ll defend Thomas in that he’s consistent and he does get some things correct (I might be coming around on GMC). Everyone in our Organization needs to be called to the mat for the Raheem Morris Era until they show us that they actually know what they’re doing. Our rep and our brand has definitely taken a hit nationally and they are the ones responsible. If they screw up this hire, we’ll fade even more into obscurity nationally (and locally).
Guys like you and me (The Homers) will continue to positively support whatever moves/non-moves are made but the guys running the Organization need to know that our patience isn’t infinite.
January 23rd, 2012 at 6:47 pm
@Sensiblebuc,
I totally agree with you. Our organization makes enough mistakes on their own without having some know-it-all spinning facts to make matters worse. We ultimately have no choice any any decisions, and judging by some of the comments we ALL make, that’s a good thing. We can either just go with it and hope for the best or whine and b!tch about everything and make ourselves miserable. I choose to not be miserable. Thomas goes the other way.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:47 pm
Kelly wasn’t worth $6Mil, no way. He is also a fool for turning down the job. This is coaching on the highest level and NFL Head Coaching jobs are few and far in between. Kelly will be lucky if he ever gets another opportunity to be an NFL Head Coach. Good riddance Chip, I am elated that you will not be coaching the Bucs. There are at least 100 better, more qualified candidates than you.
