Chip Kelly Rebuff A Good Sign?

The Bucs were much better off in 1996 when Steve Spurrier looked at other things besides the Bucs coaching gig.
A lot of Bucs fans are rubbing their eyes this morning, as if they had just awakened from a dream about the Oregon Ducks cheerleaders.
Last night Bucs fans went to bed thinking Oregon coach Chip Kelly would be the next Bucs coach, only to wake up this morning and find out Kelly is staying in Oregon after a change of heart late last night.
This move, however, could actually be a harbinger of good times, if history is to repeat, as Joe’s good friend, “The Commish,” Justin Pawlowski Twittered this morning.
@CommishOnline: Bill Parcells left Bucs at alter a couple of times which led to 2 of Bucs greatest coaches getting hired. Hopefully, history repeats itself
Pawlowski has an excellent point.
In 1996, the Bucs nearly lassoed Steve Spurrier to be the new Bucs coach, and he pulled out at the last moment. The Bucs later hired Tony Dungy.
Fast forward to 2002, and the Bucs again nearly had Bill Parcells. But he too got cold feet. The Bucs had to settle for Chucky and, whoops, hello Super Bowl.
So Bucs fans that were hoping Kelly would bring his crazy yet fun offense to the Bucs, relax. This may work out for the better.

The problem is that he is hardly the first coach to give us the finger during this coaching search. Fourth coach by my count.

I have no idea what positive is coming out of 3 different coaches telling us that they have no interest in the head coaching position.

I dunno about that. Thats a little unfair. Wade Phillips knew he didnt stand a chance and didnt want to mess up a good thing in Houston. Philbin jumped at Miami dollars, and who can blame him (plus now we know we were courting Kelly).
Im sure we could get Wade if we really wanted him – do you really want him?
Ill throw aout a name as i did on another post. Marc Trestman. Really good credentials with qb’s in the NFL and CFL. Maybe boldly pry Clements away from GB with OC/Asst. Head Coach. Five would be in good hands with those two.

Let’s see, in 2001, Gruden was always on our radar, but unattainable as Al Davis wanted a king’s ransom. Parcels leaves us at alter and we throw the bus at Al to get Gruden.
Cut to today, Marty is attainable, Chip disses us, we get Marty for cheaper than Gruden. Plus, Rah left us with a potential Superbowl core that just needed leadership (OK, that last one was a stretch comparison to what Dungy had built).
I’m just glad Marty hasn’t been picked up.

I’m glad he’s not coming, Kelly. Knowing the Glazers, they are going to try and save a little face now.
I still want to know WHY they won’t INTERVIEW BILLICK?!?! (Maybe they have and we haven’t heard?) I don’t know how you can say ‘leave no stone unturned’ and not look at the rock that’s right in front of your nose in Billick.

While I am disappointed this morning, I’ll wait to see who we do hire before considering the Skyway “exit.”
I do hope these recent events mean an exciting and innovative direction for fans to get excited about.

It is not embarassing. Most teams have had stuff like this happen. I don’t see the big deal.
The problem I see is this would have been an attempt to sell tickets and make a splash… not win.
Chip Kelly is a college coach who runs a fast paced, call all the plays from the sidelines, spread-option. On defense he goes with speed, nothing fancy and nothing more.
Who knows, maybe he wouold be a good NFL coach… I just do not see it.
Maybe the whole thing is the Glazers saying “see, we were going to spend 5 million a year” and now they get someone at 1.5 million a year.

All I know is, I think I am glad it fell through. Just didn’t seem like a good fit

Here’s where I really think we are….
I think we probably make a play for a guy like Billick, but that might be a last straw as he would require organizational commitments or changes they don’t want to make.
I think there are some old retreads that just want to get beck into coaching that would take the job and hope for the best, but would charge up the fans or sell tickets.
Then there are some untried and untested college guys that might want the job. But the good ones want more control in the organization and the poorer ones that would just “take the chance” and not make demands, won’t sell tickets or have a great percentage chance of success.
Therefore, the last two options are inferior in my mind, and I’d rather see the first. But obviously, none is without risk.

I don’t see it as an issue with coaches saying no to the Bucs.
1. There is nothing that shows Fisher said no. If anything, the Bucs said no to him and were never interested.
2. Wade Philips saying no… who cares… it was simply for an interview, nothing more and the man realized he should probably just make sure he gets the Texans Defense ready instead.
3. Chip Kelly. Happens all the time with guys making the college – pro jump. It is a big decision and minds are changed.
PLUS, add to it the fact that the Bucs are interviewing EVERYONE and anyone… then of course somethings like this will happen.
Other temas seem to have blinders on and be set with just a couple guys. Maybe that is good because they know what they want, but I don’t think so. I think the Bucs are doing it right by interviewing alot of people from a variety of backgrounds. Keeping an open mind and really searching for what they want.

Fair points by everyone. I thought Kelly would be one college coach who could transition and adapt into the NFL, but history shows it’s a coinflip basically with college guys finding success at the next level. Obviously he couldn’t run the exact same system, maybe that gave him fear, along with Nike cutting him a nice new check to stick around.
So now who? Clements I like. Fewell I hope we get the chance to interview, but I’m not sure if we can or not during this off week before the superbowl. I hope so. His defenses are playing lights out in the playoffs this year and have in years past as well!!

I honestly don’t know how well Kelly would have made the transition to here.
But think the delay isn’t that they are “looking so exhaustedly” but that they can’t get a guy of the caliber they won’t without having to make other changes in the organization that they don’t to do.
And as they become desperate, who knows what might happen.

Many teams have “star receiver”. Now admitidly, we don’t. Green Bay that has two or three of them.
But that is a heck of a lot different than having a “star QB”. Look at the difference a guy like Payton makes to a team. No receiver alone has that kind of impact.

Not that I don’t agree with everything you said, but how would you propose the Bucs make that happen? With him under contract with the Packers, the only way we can get him is as head coach…or convince the packers into a trade of some sort…I don’t like that idea at all. Last time it destroyed our drafting options.
Remember…Clements will be the new OC in Green Bay. I doubt he would even want to come here for the same position when he has such a good offense and Rodgers to work with there. This time next year, he’ll be getting offers from all over the place because of their offense.
Then the Bucs fans will be WISHING we’d hired him as head coach…as I’ve said we should do all along.

Clements has already been named OC/AHC in Green Bay, so giving him the same job here ain’t gunna fly.

I mustve forgotten, but Chip Kelly chose to interview with the Bucs and nobody else.
I can only imagine how difficult Phil Knight made it for Chip to leave…
