Chip Kelly Staying At Oregon

The Bucs don’t have their man after all.
Just hours after it seemed the Bucs were “this close” to landing Oregon coach Chip Kelly, the Ducks coach has decided to remain with the school, so Adam Jude of the Eugene Register-Guard reports.
The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay’s head coach. “It’s done,” the source said.
Just before midnight, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: “I’m staying.”
Kelly told one assistant coach Sunday night that he had been offered the Tampa Bay job, but Kelly told him he wasn’t certain what he would do.
So it’s back to the drawing board for Team Glazer and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik.
Tom Clements is still available gentlemen.

No reasonably good coach really wants this job it seems. So…….it looks like we’ll be stuck with either some clueless s.o.b like Morris or some old retread like Sherman and in three years we’ll be yearning for those good old 4-12 days. PATHETIC!
The Glazers took a team of winners and let a bunch of know nothings tear it to pieces and no coach in his right mind will touch this team given the state of their current operation!

That blows. Back to the drawing board I guess. Always curious what the behind-the-scene details of the negotiations look like. Low-ball offer, lack of control, just loves Oregon? Curious what his reason truly is for rejecting the job.

To be fair, Joe’s not sure why any successful college coach would want to jump to the NFL.
At Oregon, Kelly will be paid like an NFL coach and as long as Phil Knight is living, Kelly will be well-compensated.
Plus, at a college, a guy like Kelly is the king, he is in control. He runs the entire football operation, has massive job security. In the NFL a coach is little more than a cog.

Bummer! I liked this hire. We’re going to lose for a while anyway. It would have been nice to be entertained by an exiciting offense. I’m a little concerned that the Bucs would pull this trigger without knowing the deal was done. I’ll be even more concerned if he changes his mind again! I’m down with whoever they hire. Surely there is a #2 on their list and this is over in a few days.

Agree Joe, but there is the “challenge” factor that some coaches crave. While I recognize the overall lack of success most college coaches have had in the NFL, had a feeling Kelly would be one of the exceptions if he took the plunge. Funny, but prior to yesterday I was excited at the thought that maybe Marty might be the next Bucs coach. Now he seems more like the second/third choice date you’re taking to the prom.

In the long run, this is probably for the best. In the short term it is very disheartening. There are probably less risky choices out there with proven NFL track records.

The first report came from a TV station in Oregon Sunday afternoon. The Bucs interviewed Kelly last Wednesday. Surely if he was going to ponder the job, he would have talked to a few others, if for no other reason than to try to cobble together the beginnings of compiling a staff. People talk.

To be honest…once the initial joy faded and you start to peel the layers of the onion…I think this best for the Buccaneers.
I mean, really, what kind of staff would Kelly have been able to put together? Do you REALLY want a HC from the college ranks that 3 yrs ago was the OC at some small school?
I say…Good for Oregon…let Chip stay there and let us move on. At least the dance only lasted for a couple of hours

I’m sure the deal was done then the boys brought Dominik in to meet the new coach. Then he changed his mind. This has gotten down right embarrassing. Now if they decide to go back to a coach they have already interviewed they probably turn them down too after being second fiddle. What a mess.

In the first Kelly story I said I was concerned about KElly using the Bucs to get more Nike $.
I had a feeling that Kelly had no real interest in such a Major reclamation project. I am sure he watched some game film, including the Falcon game, and got sick to his stomach. Kelly immediately asked: Who is the GM? Someone googled it and said MArk Dominik. Kelly said, who? Then Kelly said, he of course is brand new bc ownership would not have kept him after assmebling this complete lack of talent right? Someone said, “Nope he will be your boss responsible for acquiring your players, he made Gerald McCoy the 8th highest paid player in the NFL this season.” To which Kelly says “nope, nada, never – get Knight on the phone.”
Joe: What drawing board does Dom use? Something tells me an etch-a-sketch.

Ouch, I was very excited about this. I am friends with Ricky Santos who was a QB under Kelly at UNH and he had GREAT things to say about this coach. He coached Ricky to a few seasons of 30 TD’s with single digit ints.

Dominik is the WORST talent evaluator in the NFL, I suppose I don’t blame Chip for not wanting to be here. He picked Roy Miller over Mike Wallace and used our #50 overall pick to acquire and sign Winslow to the largest contract in the history of the NFL on a guy who already had multiple knee surgeries. With the 53rd pick the Eagles got LeSean McCoy. But Dominik doesn’t like backs like that, he prefers slow plodders because “he went big back huntin” last off season. What a loser, he has ruined this team. Wow is all I can say.

It’s doesn’t mean that Bucs gig is tarnished or unwanted, please give me a break. you want to complain so you’ll find something to complain about. No matter who they hire, it will still create controversy. The Glazers are in a no win situation. These guys obviously WON’T spend money on talent and have average drafts. They won’t even resign many of their own players when it seems the coach is publicly politicing for them.
No one in their right mind will come in here without all the power in writing. And the G boys will only do that when everything else fails, or they hire another untested guy and hope for the best.
And remember that they gave up the store for Gruden when Tuna and Much spurned them. They had egg on their face back then. And the new guys are far less capable than Malcolm.

Just after Joe went to bed last night, I expressed my doubts about this happening. Why?
Because, as I’ve said, we’ve seen local and national media making up stuff constantly, so why would things change? I said that if it turned out to be true, the local rags need to hire the reporter who did what no one else could do.
I actually would have liked the hire…provided he had good coordinators.
THAT SAID:
Remember when the Glazers went after Gruden? McKay made his offers to Davis and was shut down. The Glazers refused to give up and made it happen anyway. So I would suggest this deal might still get done.
But until it does, we move on.

What I really want is Clements as OC…but I know that is completely impossible now. He’ll be offered OC in Green Bay, if he hasn’t already.
BTW, Kelly turning down the Bucs does not mean we should be embarrassed. It means he’s a man of his word to his players.

I’m leaning Rich Bisaccia or Zimmer now, with either one given a FA spending green light and at least equal input on player signings and ALL the power in choosing assistants, coordinators.

You guys are some of the most negative f*cks I’ve ever seen. No wonder, in a virtual paradise, Tampa just got the #1 ranking in “most-stressed cities”. You do realize sports are supposed to be entertainment, right? Chip Kelly changed his mind, which makes me think WAY less of him. Unless you KNOW you’re going to take the gig, you don’t even go down the path. He’s a top 5 coach in college football, & he can call his shots & name his plan for the next ten years (though I hope, & suspect, this pro flirtation will hurt his program). The next pro offer he gets, it’ll be a Pete Carroll-esque deal, with full control. & this team has a franchise QB, WR, TB, line, & a young defense full of talent & youth. To say Dom is a terrible GM is to not know what you’re talking about. The inept coaching killed us last year, & lest anybody compare Raheem Morris to Tom Clements (my choice), Clements has been an esteemed player & coach for many, many years, unlike Rah. This was just a bad year to need a coach. But I suspect many of you would’ve KILLED a Mike McCarthy or Sean Payton hiring 5 years ago, or even that failure retread from Cleveland who just made his 5th Super Bowl. You just never know…

Kelly had one of two things happen….
Oregon either called him back and offered him a new contract with a big pay increase, so he pulled out.
OR
He found out more about the situation here and the organization, or couldn’t negotiate control, and pulled out.
I never said Kelly was or wasn’t the answer. But the method in which they played out is simply more of the same that we have seen from the Glazers. It’s not negative pointing it out…it is just realistically the way the Glazers conduct their business.

Mixed feelings about this hire…. but how many times have we heard that Mark Dom was soooo close but lost out on a hire? Doesn’t bode well for our front office and they’re ability to land a big fish.
