Chip Kelly Staying At Oregon
January 23rd, 2012The Bucs don’t have their man after all.
Just hours after it seemed the Bucs were “this close” to landing Oregon coach Chip Kelly, the Ducks coach has decided to remain with the school, so Adam Jude of the Eugene Register-Guard reports.
The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay’s head coach. “It’s done,” the source said.
Just before midnight, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: “I’m staying.”
Kelly told one assistant coach Sunday night that he had been offered the Tampa Bay job, but Kelly told him he wasn’t certain what he would do.
So it’s back to the drawing board for Team Glazer and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik.
Tom Clements is still available gentlemen.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:25 am
Well that lasted about 20 minutes…jilted…jinxed….sick to my stomach
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:29 am
Too good to be true. Parcells all over again.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:37 am
Wow. It’s one thing when someone wont even interview, another when they say yes and then say NAH at the last minute.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:38 am
Billy Donovan 2.0
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:41 am
No reasonably good coach really wants this job it seems. So…….it looks like we’ll be stuck with either some clueless s.o.b like Morris or some old retread like Sherman and in three years we’ll be yearning for those good old 4-12 days. PATHETIC!
The Glazers took a team of winners and let a bunch of know nothings tear it to pieces and no coach in his right mind will touch this team given the state of their current operation!
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:42 am
I woke up this morning like it was christmas only to find my shiny new kelly toy had been returned to the store without getting unwrapped.i guess one of those martys will have to do instead.

Love the early morning rage!
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:47 am
That blows. Back to the drawing board I guess. Always curious what the behind-the-scene details of the negotiations look like. Low-ball offer, lack of control, just loves Oregon? Curious what his reason truly is for rejecting the job.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:50 am
FlBoy84:
To be fair, Joe’s not sure why any successful college coach would want to jump to the NFL.
At Oregon, Kelly will be paid like an NFL coach and as long as Phil Knight is living, Kelly will be well-compensated.
Plus, at a college, a guy like Kelly is the king, he is in control. He runs the entire football operation, has massive job security. In the NFL a coach is little more than a cog.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:51 am
Bummer! I liked this hire. We’re going to lose for a while anyway. It would have been nice to be entertained by an exiciting offense. I’m a little concerned that the Bucs would pull this trigger without knowing the deal was done. I’ll be even more concerned if he changes his mind again! I’m down with whoever they hire. Surely there is a #2 on their list and this is over in a few days.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:54 am
Just hire Marty or Zimmer and get this thing over with already!
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:58 am
Agree Joe, but there is the “challenge” factor that some coaches crave. While I recognize the overall lack of success most college coaches have had in the NFL, had a feeling Kelly would be one of the exceptions if he took the plunge. Funny, but prior to yesterday I was excited at the thought that maybe Marty might be the next Bucs coach. Now he seems more like the second/third choice date you’re taking to the prom.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:00 am
Darn, the Bucs got fuc*** by a duck.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:03 am
i am ebarassed by my team….again
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:04 am
Thank God…we don’t need a guy who has only been a college head coach for 3 yrs
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 am
Oh well. Back to the old folks home, I guess.
And I was pumped about this, too.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 am
In the long run, this is probably for the best. In the short term it is very disheartening. There are probably less risky choices out there with proven NFL track records.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:10 am
now what?
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:13 am
Bring Dungy back, let him have full control, make him an offer he can’t refuse!
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:14 am
Wasn’t entirely thrilled, but not as bad a retreading Sherman.
However, who is the douchebag that had to get ‘the scoop’? Just like Parcells, it killed the deal. Why? Becauwse it shows the Bucs organization leaks like a seive.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:16 am
Phew! This would have been a terrible hire. College coaches stink in the pros.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:16 am
It appears NOBODY wants to work with Dom when he has control of it ALL.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:17 am
Here comes Shermy.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:22 am
Brown Bag:
The first report came from a TV station in Oregon Sunday afternoon. The Bucs interviewed Kelly last Wednesday. Surely if he was going to ponder the job, he would have talked to a few others, if for no other reason than to try to cobble together the beginnings of compiling a staff. People talk.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:28 am
He better take the job. They’re about to get hit with some nasty sanctions up there.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:30 am
If he chooses to go back to Oregon when they’re facing a s-storm, then the Bucs job truly is a bad one.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:33 am
That was the blockbuster move? Glazerhouses + Dom = UNINSPIRED
Guess we are back to MartyBall! Get it done Pukes!
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:36 am
WOW…so much anxiety!!
To be honest…once the initial joy faded and you start to peel the layers of the onion…I think this best for the Buccaneers.
I mean, really, what kind of staff would Kelly have been able to put together? Do you REALLY want a HC from the college ranks that 3 yrs ago was the OC at some small school?
I say…Good for Oregon…let Chip stay there and let us move on. At least the dance only lasted for a couple of hours
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:42 am
I guess he just couldn’t work for Glazer peanuts after all. When Cheap goes Wrong.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:43 am
Thank you Joe. It is inevitable things get out, but we figured this is why the Bucs are interviewing from Texas.
BTW, how does one make something look like a quote, such as you did with my post?
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:55 am
I’m sure the deal was done then the boys brought Dominik in to meet the new coach. Then he changed his mind. This has gotten down right embarrassing. Now if they decide to go back to a coach they have already interviewed they probably turn them down too after being second fiddle. What a mess.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:58 am
The glazer boys are probably throwing hissy fits right now. Hopefully this doesnt stall them too much and they get right back to work.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:58 am
Wow, what a relief.
Please call Rich Bisaccia now.
Next up, Les Miles
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:02 am
No love lost. An option offense is a fad that doesn’t work well in the NFL.
Clements, Zimmer, and I STILL don’t understand why they won’t interview Billick.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:03 am
We suck. That is now 4 coaches to spurn us during this coaching search. Phillips, Fisher, Philbin, and now Kelly.
This organization should be embarrassed. What a mess they’ve made.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:04 am
Brownbag, regarding the quotes. You need to use the html blockquote tag. Put
without the spaces to end the quoted section.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:05 am
WOW just WOW
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:05 am
Well, apparently even with the spaces it messed up. Use:
LESSTHAN blockquote GREATERTHAN to start
and
LESSTHAN FORWARDSLASH blockquote GREATERTHAN to end
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:09 am
Ah shucks, was hoping that one would happen.
Especially given the known alternatives.
Add him to the list in bucs history, Bo Jackson, Parcells, Spurrior, Favre, etc. etc. etc.
Depressing.

January 23rd, 2012 at 9:14 am
If his heart wasn’t in it I’m glad he didn’t come.
The real question is what does this do to the rest of the potential candidates?
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:14 am
In the first Kelly story I said I was concerned about KElly using the Bucs to get more Nike $.
I had a feeling that Kelly had no real interest in such a Major reclamation project. I am sure he watched some game film, including the Falcon game, and got sick to his stomach. Kelly immediately asked: Who is the GM? Someone googled it and said MArk Dominik. Kelly said, who? Then Kelly said, he of course is brand new bc ownership would not have kept him after assmebling this complete lack of talent right? Someone said, “Nope he will be your boss responsible for acquiring your players, he made Gerald McCoy the 8th highest paid player in the NFL this season.” To which Kelly says “nope, nada, never – get Knight on the phone.”
Joe: What drawing board does Dom use? Something tells me an etch-a-sketch.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:18 am
Ouch, I was very excited about this. I am friends with Ricky Santos who was a QB under Kelly at UNH and he had GREAT things to say about this coach. He coached Ricky to a few seasons of 30 TD’s with single digit ints.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:19 am
Brad, you actually put the word blockquote inbetween the lessthan/greaterthan. then put the text in between the 2 blockquote tags (first with no / second one with a /)
If you google “html blockquote syntax” you will get a better explanation than I can type out here.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:26 am
Surely Team Glazer (after getting left at the altar by Parcells) have a Plan B in place. I agree, what coach will now want to play second fiddle? That’s why they had to give up sooo much to get Gruden in 2001/2002 (damage control).
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:28 am
Let’s see, who would want to work under “snot nosed” Mark Dominik? Exactly…. No one!
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:32 am
If this worked, it is similar to inserting a youtube video in another forum I frequent. Very cool.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:33 am
It worked. Thanks Meh.
Now, if only Joe will give us an email to ask private questions and give suggestions. . .
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:34 am
Congrats brown bag!
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:34 am
Joe’s email is joe@joebucsfan.com
It is in the ‘advertising’ section.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:36 am
Why does my comment not appear? I woke up at like 630 or 7 AM to post it.
Dominik is the WORST talent evaluator in the NFL, I suppose I don’t blame Chip for not wanting to be here. He picked Roy Miller over Mike Wallace and used our #50 overall pick to acquire and sign Winslow to the largest contract in the history of the NFL on a guy who already had multiple knee surgeries. With the 53rd pick the Eagles got LeSean McCoy. But Dominik doesn’t like backs like that, he prefers slow plodders because “he went big back huntin” last off season. What a loser, he has ruined this team. Wow is all I can say.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:39 am
Not going to beat up on anyone about this. They went out and made a bold effort, dude “changed his mind”.
More on him than them IMO.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:41 am
Quick html lesson, I do this for a living.
Blockquote
Bold Put text inside the b tags
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:43 am
I really hate WordPress… 😉 strips pre tags…
Anyway, Kelly would have been an innovative choice, but really, who would have he gotten as coordinators? I still would like to see Marty or Sherman, just for stability, let then get this young team headed in the right direction discipline and effort wise.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:44 am
Sherman is a loser that nobody else wants. Problem is no decent coaches want anything to do with Dominik.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:47 am
A guy said to be coming here that backed out?
Wow…who would have thought.
He probably realized the G Boys wouldn’t let him spend money on players and decided to wait for a situation where he actually had a good chance to win.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:49 am
*Bangs head on desk*
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:49 am
Are the Armwood or Plant HS coaches available?
Would they like drive down the road to come here?
There must be a college assistant that would like the job.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:51 am
Dom can never land the fish. Haynesworth, Vilma, and now Kelly. Please no Clements. No HC experience at any level. Let’s not go down the Raheem Morris path again.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:52 am
Seems like Dom and the G Boys are….
“the pirates…that don’t do anything.”
Those of you with young kids probably understand what I’m saying.
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:55 am
Afternoon Delight needs to put on his big boy pants and Hire MARTY!!!!!!!!
January 23rd, 2012 at 9:55 am
Oh God back to Sherman talk,
Just when I thought we had dodged that horrific possibility. Sometimes I think this team was founded just to torture my soul.
Might want to go back to the old pro Marty before the pool of assistants dwindles down to Mouse Davis.
Marc Trestman anyone? Won a couple of Grey Cups and his QB was MVP of the league.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:01 am
Really Nicolas Carlson? “Phew! This would have been a terrible hire. College coaches stink in the pros.” Jim Harbaugh surely stinks right??? I fail to see your logic, oh that’s right, there probably isn’t any. Let the anger flow! And the ignorant comments will follow. eric had it right: The dude changed his mind. It’s a big decision moving your entire family across the country. It’s doesn’t mean that Bucs gig is tarnished or unwanted, please give me a break. you want to complain so you’ll find something to complain about. No matter who they hire, it will still create controversy. The Glazers are in a no win situation. No matter who they hire, it will be the wrong guy, or the only guy we could get because the Glazers are cheap or the only yes man, blah blah blah….rinse and repeat…
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:04 am
Jim Mora or Jim Haslett are available?
Wow…the G boys and Dom never fail to amaze me.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:10 am
“A”…you really don’t think this organization is tarnished?
Wow…..
These guys obviously WON’T spend money on talent and have average drafts. They won’t even resign many of their own players when it seems the coach is publicly politicing for them.
No one in their right mind will come in here without all the power in writing. And the G boys will only do that when everything else fails, or they hire another untested guy and hope for the best.
And remember that they gave up the store for Gruden when Tuna and Much spurned them. They had egg on their face back then. And the new guys are far less capable than Malcolm.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:18 am
These coaches talk.
Everyone eigher knows what is going on in Tampa, or will talk to people that do before they sign a contract to get the straight story.
I’d almost bet that was what happened with Kelly.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:22 am
Buc N’ A:
Perhaps you have not heard of Bobby Petrino?
Or maybe the name Nick Saban slips your mind?
Or how about Steve Spurrier?
For every college guy that makes it in the NFL, there are (at least) five that were complete flops.
As far as Harbaugh, it’s not like he was a virgin to the NFL this season.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:29 am
Just after Joe went to bed last night, I expressed my doubts about this happening. Why?
Because, as I’ve said, we’ve seen local and national media making up stuff constantly, so why would things change? I said that if it turned out to be true, the local rags need to hire the reporter who did what no one else could do.
I actually would have liked the hire…provided he had good coordinators.
THAT SAID:
Remember when the Glazers went after Gruden? McKay made his offers to Davis and was shut down. The Glazers refused to give up and made it happen anyway. So I would suggest this deal might still get done.
But until it does, we move on.
Back to my list.
1) Clements
2) Marty
What I really want is Clements as OC…but I know that is completely impossible now. He’ll be offered OC in Green Bay, if he hasn’t already.
BTW, Kelly turning down the Bucs does not mean we should be embarrassed. It means he’s a man of his word to his players.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:30 am
They’ll be looking at high school coaches soon. We have the worst owners in the league. I feel bad for us as fans that we are stuck with these people.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:32 am
If it’s possible for a successful college coach to fail in the NFL, isn’t the reverse true as well? A successful NFL coach could fail in college?
If we follow that reasoning…Sherman could well succeed with the Bucs.
(I only said that to ruffle peoples tail-feathers) hehe
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:34 am
I’m leaning Rich Bisaccia or Zimmer now, with either one given a FA spending green light and at least equal input on player signings and ALL the power in choosing assistants, coordinators.
This has got to get done. Woke up all pumped up about Kelly and get this.
Oh well, it’s all part of being a Buccaneer fan these days………
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:55 am
It looks like they want to play Moneyball like the A’s and Rays. They just can’t find their Maddon to get the best out of the NFL’s AAA practice squad/undrafted FA guys.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:58 am
The Glazers can’t play Moneyball like the Rays.
They don’t have brilliant guys at nearly every level of the organization to offset the lack of money,
January 23rd, 2012 at 11:04 am
You guys are some of the most negative f*cks I’ve ever seen. No wonder, in a virtual paradise, Tampa just got the #1 ranking in “most-stressed cities”. You do realize sports are supposed to be entertainment, right? Chip Kelly changed his mind, which makes me think WAY less of him. Unless you KNOW you’re going to take the gig, you don’t even go down the path. He’s a top 5 coach in college football, & he can call his shots & name his plan for the next ten years (though I hope, & suspect, this pro flirtation will hurt his program). The next pro offer he gets, it’ll be a Pete Carroll-esque deal, with full control. & this team has a franchise QB, WR, TB, line, & a young defense full of talent & youth. To say Dom is a terrible GM is to not know what you’re talking about. The inept coaching killed us last year, & lest anybody compare Raheem Morris to Tom Clements (my choice), Clements has been an esteemed player & coach for many, many years, unlike Rah. This was just a bad year to need a coach. But I suspect many of you would’ve KILLED a Mike McCarthy or Sean Payton hiring 5 years ago, or even that failure retread from Cleveland who just made his 5th Super Bowl. You just never know…
January 23rd, 2012 at 11:22 am
Kelly had one of two things happen….
Oregon either called him back and offered him a new contract with a big pay increase, so he pulled out.
OR
He found out more about the situation here and the organization, or couldn’t negotiate control, and pulled out.
I never said Kelly was or wasn’t the answer. But the method in which they played out is simply more of the same that we have seen from the Glazers. It’s not negative pointing it out…it is just realistically the way the Glazers conduct their business.
January 23rd, 2012 at 11:27 am
Mixed feelings about this hire…. but how many times have we heard that Mark Dom was soooo close but lost out on a hire? Doesn’t bode well for our front office and they’re ability to land a big fish.
January 23rd, 2012 at 12:17 pm
I find it so interesting how Dom gets slammed. Two years ago he was up for GM of the Year, we have one bad year and the sky is falling, come on fair weather fans.
Phil Knight probably called Chip and said, how much is it going to take to keep you here.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:56 pm
Im not upset abt it I thought to myself whn we were gunna hire him ” who is he gunna bring in for a coaching staff? so whn he didnt take the job i wasnt upset it just makes since, Zimmer or Clements or Marty
