Bucs Going After Chip Kelly “Strong”

It’s beginning to look like that within a day or two, the Bucs may have a new coach, and another visor-wearing one at that.
The rumors continue to flow across the electronic river known as Twitter with news confirming the Bucs trying to land offensive mastermind, Chucky confidant and Oregon coach Chip Kelly.
Now comes word from Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune via Twitter that Team Glazer is putting a full-court press on Kelly.
Bucs in strong pursuit of Oregon coach Chip Kelly to make him their new head coach. Deal would reunite Kelly with RB LeGarrette Blount
Joe just hopes Kelly, if he does come to the Bucs, brings the Ducks cheerleaders with him.
Joe has two thoughts about Kelly [potentially] coming to the Bucs.
1. Oregon has the ways and means to match or outbid whatever Team Glazer throws at Kelly (see: Knight, Phil). So Joe wonders if this is just a powerplay by Kelly?
2. Is the NCAA on the Ducks’ tail? That could be a reason Kelly is trying to beat the hangman’s noose (see: Carroll, Pete).

Agreed, sensiblebuc. Had Chip Kelly served as an NFL assistant for a few years (e.g., Jim Harbaugh), it would make far more sense, but he’s been a college coach his entire career. The game is just too different between the NFL and college. With all due respect to Kelly, too many coaches better than he have been unable to make the jump without NFL experience. This is just as bad as the rumors that Jim Tressel is in line for the Colts gig.

Ya im just not sure about this hire. I dont think he has ANY nfl experience. Even carroll was a HC for a couple years. But im going to stick by my team no matter what because im a true fan.

however, im not sure chip is enough of an icon.
plus oregón doesnt have UF booster money.
also tricky for recruiting if hc wants to bolt. we shall see.
glazers are remarkably able to get what they put their minds to. id bet on them.

Exactly. We just fired a guy who had to learn on the job. Kelly is going to have to learn how to coach grown men, not college kids.
Kelly’s claim to fame is a gimmick spread-option offense with like 15 plays run very, very efficiently using athletes who were simply faster than most of their counterparts.
I’m bummed. I’ll give the guy a shot obviously but I’m bummed.

The Glazers found their next sucker. A coach that is looking to move into the NFL and is willing to be paid less than an experienced formal HC. That sound is the toilet flushing Buc fans.

Oh, they certainly do. Phil Knight. He’s the Boone Pickens and Warren Buffett of Oklahoma State and Nebraska, respectively. University of Oregon is basically built on NIKE cash.
Knight has given Oregon’s football program so many millions of cash, he gets to sit in his private booth with a headset on listening to the coaches call plays.

Nothing will ever make Bucs fans happy. They will always find something to bitch about.
Chip Kelly knows how to best utilize the athletes that he has and gets players in positions to make plays. I don’t care what he wants to throw out there as far as offensive schemes go. I want to see a coach that knows how to tailor that scheme to the parts that are on the roster. He doesn’t need to revolutionize the game, he needs to get max production out of the roster, something Olson had no clue how to do.

Agreed with gotbbucs. I like that we brought in an offensive guy assuming he actually is our next coach. The key will be the assembly of the staff. Getting an experienced D Coord will be paramount.

I’m pumped that we didn’t end up settling on Sherman or Childress. Kelly is a gamer, I’ll support him regardless. I hope he actually runs the offense and not just a figurehead.

Love what you said. Everyone whined and cried for a change, well here we got one. We got a college coach who is use to dealing with young players and disciplining young players. He is also an offensive mastermind who always has SPEED and big play potential on his offense. Well say hello to Lamichael james and in a few years maybe the black mamba deanthony thomas. All I can say is I am sure we will see a whole bunch of excitement on offense this year. I wanted zimmer but looks like were going opposite direction woooooo bring it on

SensibleBuc, you are correct. USC got into a lot of NCAA trouble, and Oregon got the superior athletes that would normally have went to USC.
Oregon, like USC, simply had better athletes.
Better athletes can often make any Coach look like a “genius”

I wonder if he gets to pick his own staff. As he IS an experienced HC, I certainly hope so.
To me as a fan, it’s very exciting and I’m quite positive this surprising move is the right one. We have such a young team, one that could respond to Kelly.
Look at the success Jim Harbaugh had with the 49ers coming from college with NO off-season!

Looking on the bright side, another thing Oregon’s offenses are known for is their military type precision. IF Chip’s the Coach and IF he can get the players to buy into his system we’ll see better execution on offense…
Will that offense (whatever that ends up being) be successful? Guess we’ll see.

Both fair points. The Glazers have been left at the altar before, but who knows at Oregon what’s up when you have the biggest sports company in the world blatantly funding the Athletic Department….
Hopefully he can find a way to use Blount properly, and I wouldn’t complain if they targeted LaMichael James with that early 3rd round pick.

It is a BALLSY move by both the Glazers and the Rockstar, and I applaud then for that. They are trying to bring Tampa a winner. Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, and Tom Coughlin all hold Kelly in the highest regard.
Tom Coughlin offered Kelly the O Coordinator position.
This man is a very very highly regarded coach, and his record speaks for itself.
In the NFL, he will not have such athletic superiority, as he had at Oregon.

Wow is all I can say. Kelly is an offensive genius but he does run the spread offense so maybe Freeman can be morph into Tim Tebow lol or his own version of it. Perhaps he will change his offensive style to the NFL but if not look for the spread offense and the Bucs to draft Lamichael James in 2nd or 3rd round. As far as the defense my bet is the Glazers already have a coordinator in mind. Tony Dungys son played for Kelly last year and Dungy came out and said Kelly would be a good head coach. I am cautiously for this move. At least we might have an offense, Kelly has 10 times the football IQ that Olson will ever have college, pro, whatever. Watch for trick plays too, Kelly loves trick plays.

As of 1 a.m. Monday, it has been confirmed by no one. Sure, there are websites “citing” unnamed sources. That’s not what Joe calls confirmation.
Confirmation is a release sent out by either the University of Oregon or the Bucs or Chip Kelly himself talking on the record.
Joe has yet to see any source named or quoted. Not in any of the Oregon papers, nor the local papers, not even BSPN.
You should learn from the “confirmed reports” of Lee Roy Selmon and Joe Paterno deaths, despite the fact they were still drawning a breath when their deaths were “reported.”
Kelly may very well be on his way to Tampa Bay. But as Joe is typing this, there is no confirmation.

My first reaction was NOOOO, not a college coach. Now that I ve had the chance to find out a little more about the guy, it may just work. One of the knocks about this team is that it is young and immature. Perhaps they need someone that is used to working with these yungry knuckleheads.
I dont follow Oregon football, so does anyone know if he is a stern disciplinarian type that will give even his toughest player a bad case of the squirts, or more of the Ward Cleaver type….If it the latter, we’re sunk. JMO
