Wade Phillips Pulls Out Of Bucs’ Search
January 12th, 2012As Joe’s good friend, the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620 said earlier this week of the list of known candidates to replace jettisoned Bucs coach Raheem Morris, “It makes me want to puke.”
Well, now there is one less person to blow chunks over.
Texans defensive coordinator and four-time former NFL head coach Wade Phillips has withdrawn his name from consideration, per Tampa Tribune beat scribe Woody Cummings.
Phillips, 64, was scheduled to interview for the Bucs job in Houston after the Texans practice on Friday, but he called Bucs general manager Mark Dominik early Thursday evening and told him he was pulling out.
Joe wonders why Phillips is pulling out at the last moment? Perhaps it’s because he was well-aware he wasn’t getting the job? Perhaps he’s on to something no one else is? More likely it is because he has more pressing concerns, like Houston’s playoff game at Baltimore this weekend?
Joe thinks it is because he doesn’t want anyone stealing knowledge from him.

No knowledge for u glazers.
Must be overflowed from the discussions with those walking seminars Sherman and chilly.
January 12th, 2012 at 10:34 pm
Lol @eric If these guys really are smoke screens for knowledge, then we are wasting some precious time.
January 12th, 2012 at 10:47 pm
Why did we want to talk to him anyway? Doesnt he run the 3-4?
January 12th, 2012 at 10:47 pm
I gotta say – when I saw the original article referencing Al Davis’ utilization of the interview process as a way of “stealing knowledge”…I wondered if you guys realized that despite what you think about Wade Phillips – he does know how to read…
I would say Chilly’s probably kicking himself right now…
The only thing worse than realizing the level your team has devolved to by intervieing aging loser candidates – is understanding that you can actually benefit from old washed up candidates full of “meh”.
One more thing Joe: the next time somebody wants to fire a Superbowl winning coach and replace him with a sharp sounding position coach with no coordinator/head coaching experiencing – I’m going to punch them right in the face.
January 12th, 2012 at 10:59 pm
He was probably told the Bucs were going to run the 3-4 and he figured that if he was going to put himself on the line, he would do it on his terms. Funny thing is though, he was the defensive coordinator in the 4-3 in Philadelphia from 86-90 for a guy named Buddy Ryan. Those defenses weren’t too shabby.

I saw chris mortensen say something about the possibility of marty schottenheimer and todd haley joining up here. That’d be interesting….
January 12th, 2012 at 11:11 pm
Maybe Wade heard that Tampa has already made up it’s mind on a coach, and are just going through the motions right now so it “looks good”.
I want it to be Marty Schottenheimer.
January 12th, 2012 at 11:42 pm
No biggie. Bring on Marty.
January 12th, 2012 at 11:55 pm
Wade Philips has faced serious scrutiny from fans and local media of Houston that he is interviewing with Bucs on Friday while the team is facing Baltimore on Sunday. Kubiak made it clear that according to their usual schedule, Wade’s services wont be needed from Friday afternoon till the beginning of the game and that his interview in no way is going to affect his team’s preparation. But still, fans are being fans and media being media and trashing the poor guy.
January 12th, 2012 at 11:57 pm
Boo hoo. We need Zimmer.
January 13th, 2012 at 12:17 am
Dom is just killing time. The Glazer’s have made there decision. This BS is for show. Lil Bum knows something. He probably spoke with Marty.
January 13th, 2012 at 12:18 am
^If that were the reason, he wouldn’t withdraw his name entirely. He would simply reschedule until sometime after the Baltimore game. It has to be another reason, probably that he doesn’t feel he is a serious candidate at this point and that the Bucs likely have narrowed it down already.
January 13th, 2012 at 12:34 am
The Glazer search for a Coaching staff is extremely boring. Take a road trip to Orlando and hire Mickey, Goofy and Daffy. Make sure to ask Walt Disney for permission to speak to them.
Dead man walking!
January 13th, 2012 at 2:04 am
Either the Bucs already have their guy or they are going after someone currently in the playoffs.
Either scenario isn’t very exciting.
The more this drags on the more I get bummed out. This is the worst year I can remember for coaching candidates.
January 13th, 2012 at 2:55 am
On a side note. What does anyone think about trying to grab Peyton Hillis as a FB. I know he got struck with the Madden Curse (which i still find funny every year). I think his demand would be low and if he can gain what made him so good in 2010. He would be a great pick up for heavy ground and pound with Blount.
Thoughts?
p.s. Sorry for hi-jack, just thought of it and wanted to know what others thought.
January 13th, 2012 at 2:58 am
Marty Shottenhiemer HC/ Todd Hailey OC/ Nolan or Spagnoulo DC? I am soooo down with that 🙂 I’d even be ok with Hue Jackson as OC.
January 13th, 2012 at 2:59 am
correction Nolan, Spagnoulo, OR Zimmer… My fave is Zimmer~
January 13th, 2012 at 3:35 am
If they hired Wade Phillips, I would shoot myself in the face.
January 13th, 2012 at 4:07 am
I think Wade did the right thing. He has a great situation in Houston, so why would we want to risk failing here in Tampa?
I’m pretty upset that we’re not even looking at Zimmer. The guy is well respected throughout the league and is one of the best up and coming candidates. I could see the guy being one of the next Sean Payton’s, Mike Smith’s, or John Harbaugh’s. Rising coordinators that become very good NFL head coaches.

Now if Sherman and chilly will drop out too, it will be harder for the “Rockstar” to make the wrong choice. Hire Marty!!!!!!!!
January 13th, 2012 at 6:44 am
Vic fangio sf dc.very solid.just sayin!!
January 13th, 2012 at 8:08 am
Peter King is an idiot.
January 13th, 2012 at 9:33 am
Forget Wade!!!Bring on MARTY!!! He will put together a great staff… forget the age he will connect just fine he just a championship with a young team..
January 13th, 2012 at 10:26 am
The big log makes no sense: Dungy, Gruden, Sherman, Childress and Marty make him want to puke – but he fraudulently defended the indefensible and incompetent Rah all season long. Huh?
January 13th, 2012 at 10:34 am
Thomas:
Dungy has NEVER been linked to the Bucs coaching search. Don’t try to invent things.
January 13th, 2012 at 11:29 am
Hire Marty and quit the speculation!
January 13th, 2012 at 12:57 pm
Whoa Joe. I wasn’t inventing anything – I wasnt suggesting Dungy was linked – but when Dungy was the coach the big log would rip his performance constantly calling for his termination – same with Gru.
Yet Rah turns in the worst performance ever – and he searches for ridiculous excuses. It makes no sense – that is all I am saying.
January 13th, 2012 at 7:11 pm
OR…maybe he checked out the fan sites to see if the fans would welcome him…and didn’t like what he saw.
