Bucs Leaning Toward Package Deal?

Many Bucs fans are rolling their eyes at the list of candidates rumored to be interviewed by Team Glazer and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik to replace jettisoned coach Raheem Morris.
It seems the common denominator is head coaching experience and being one step from retirement.
Now some have speculated that the Bucs interviewing former Minnesota coach Brad Childress — BRAD CHILDRESS! — may not actually have been for a head coaching gig, but as a coordinator.
Now, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network has added fuel to that fire claiming the Bucs have a package deal in mind, so he Twittered today, stopping just short of writing Mike Sherman is the Bucs’ top target.
@JasonLaCanfora: Bucs interviewing on road, not at team headquarters. In the end package of Sherman, w/ Childress and Mike Nolan as coordinators, may be it.
Sherman makes Joe yawn. Joe just cannot believe Sherman is the best head coaching candidate out there. What other teams have interviewed Sherman if he is so valuable? Case closed.
As far as Childress, please explain a quarterback he developed? Sure, he was with Andy Reid when Donovan McNabb was the Eagles quarterback but Joe is convinced that was all Reid.
Yeah, Childress really developed Tavaris Jackson, didn’t he?
Joe is OK with Nolan. Solid coach, solid defensive guy.
Joe never thought he would write the following: Please, Marty Chokenheimer, please come to Tampa Bay.

Waaay batter than Raheem Morris, hands down.
Also, Joe, you could have a nice polarized comment frenzy with the anti-Sherman base… not to mention added articles with tweets coming form Sapp, White and King… and the local radio pundits.
Sherman won’t know what hit him.
It would be entertaining to say the least. Just make sure you continue to push the Rockstar Mark D angle.

Im not sold on sherman either why are we considering a guy who was previously fired from the NFL went to the college level and got fired there? IMO that seems like a downward spiral that I dont want. Personally I would like us to have the Packers OC as our next head coach or the Pakers QB coack or Billick.

I like this deal. Childress is a good OC not HC. Mike nolan is pretty good too and i think these guys can do a good job.

I wouldn’t mind seeing BP at nose, GMC & Bowers at DE & Clayborn in a Mario Williams-type of OLB role.

Billick, Zimmer, Clements, Chip Kelly, Kirk Ferentz – so many talented minds we’re not interviewing right now.
We never know how somebody is going to do, but at least get somebody who can grow with the Bucs. Phillips, Marty, Sherman – can we GET any older? Childress – yikes.

He runs a Parcells style 3-4, not a Phillips style (which you are talking about and which we could possibly run). We just don’t have the personnel for the parcells style 3-4 at all, unless we are talking about a total change over. This is a square peg round hole situation. Doesn’t make any sense to me at all. This defensive line is the only thing worth saving on this defense and we’re going to just abandon it?

I would be absolutely good with Nolan. He has beena very good DC everywhere he has been.
Childress on offense… not so sure.
Sherman as HC – is a discipline type guy and they need that.
I see alot of old shcool, take no crap guys here. A lot of leadership. This team needs that.

Can’t do a 3-4 – The DL is just learning and coming around some and we want to F them up and switch them to a 3-4? That’s the equivalent to have a Rookie QB changing offensive systems 3 out of 3 years.
I’ll keep an open mind, but on the surface this has disaster all over it. (3-4)

We could run a 3-4 like the Texans run, probably. No way could we run Nolan’s style of 3-4 without replacing most of our defensive line. These are the wrong players completely for that style of 3-4.

1. Would a Nolan 3-4 defense mean we are keeping Haynesworth if he restructures contract?
2. There have been numeroud failed HCs that switch to OC or DC and thrive. So I’m am curious about the Childres/OC role.
3. Would really like Schottenheimer over Sherman. Why, Chargers- constant playoff members during his term. Final Charger year – 14-2. MIssed playoffs on technicality.
4. I hope courting Sherman is only a ploy to make someone like Schottenheimer or the OC from Green Bay not overreach for GM duties or salary.

Chilly was the Quarterbacks coach / OC of the Eagles from 99-05, when Philly was dominant in the NFC and kicked us out of the NFC championship a few times. I would say he knows things. To be specific he was…
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, running backs/wide receivers coach (1978–1984)
Indianapolis Colts, quarterbacks coach (1985)
Northern Arizona University, offensive coordinator (1986–1989)
University of Utah, wide receivers coach (1990)
University of Wisconsin–Madison, running backs coach, offensive coordinator (1991–1998)
Philadelphia Eagles, quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator (1999–2005).
Not saying he is the perfect OC, but you are damning him because he couldnt coach up Tavaris Jackson? Are you kidding me?

Wow…this is weak. Childress? We desperatley need some1 to get Josh to progress and grow. I think Nolan is a solid DC, but I’m with Meh. The DL is the only bright spot on r D. So we just spent r last 2, 1st n 2nd rnd picks for a system we may no longer run?

Maybe the Buc’s are just a lot smarter then they are given credit for?
Let’s see, you have an organization that is looking for a new coach and ideas on how to turn this team around and turn it around quickly.
You have half a dozen or more experienced coaches that are willing to give their opinion on what THEY would do and how THEY would turn this thing around. Giving input on the best coordinators available, input on Buc’s personell etc. etc..
And they are willing to do all of this for FREE (in order to get the job).
The Glazers are business people and personally, I’ve learned a LOT from interviewing bright candidates for open positions. A simple question of ‘What would be your top 10 steps on how to turn this brand around’ will give you amazing input and ideas you never even thought about.
Just a thought though…

Wouldn’t mind Schottenheimer, as long as he didn’t bring that damn dog. My bad, wrong Schott. And I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a 3-4 brought in. Most of this years playoff teams run it as least part of the time. Think it would be an exciting change and we have the majority of the players to make it work. Of the mind that football players can adapt to a scheme as long as they buy in. Have Crowder, Reed or Johnson drop some weight and you’ve added to your LB depth. Would definitely require a few FA pickups, but could be done.

scholty, I actually agree with that. I was happy when they said they’d have an extensive HC search. I hope they start getting some opinions from some successful college coaches too even if they’re not likely to be hired.

If our team ends up being Sherman and Childress, we will officially be the biggest joke in the NFL and it will be glaringly obvious that the Glazers are morons who don’t want to spend and want idiot coaches that they can control. You can tell nothing they say is real, look at that corny plastered smile on Joel’s face during the firing of Morris press conference. Your team is in shambles! Stop smiling like a goon the second you step on stage and during the whole press conference!

I’m all for Schotty. Let him bring his kid as OC (he’s handicapped working for the Jets} and his brother as DC (the reason he’s not at SD). Brian could be the HC after Marty and we can change the teams name to the Buccanheimers. Seriously, do it Glazers, you will have a professional football team again.

Talking of package deals ,i am sure big schotty will offer to bring in lil schotty as oc/asst head coach for future transition.makes a lot of sense and helps show insight to leading the team for the future.I like this,a lot.
Can anyone confirm but isn’t brees,tomlinson,merriman,tony gonzo all schotty draft picks?And didn’t he also use our former great fullback lorenzo neal to open up huge holes!!!!playin a lil smash mouth marty ball.

I was okay with passing over Fisher for a guy like Zimmer because of potential. I would be even okay with Billick over Fisher.
But Sherman?
This doesn’t make sense at all.
The Bucs are obviously leaning towards going with HC experience.. Especially HC’s who are disciplined. I wasn’t ever a Fisher supporter but something isn’t adding up and it really does sound like money even though I hate to be a conspiracy theorist.
I will be convinced that the Glazer’s are horrible at making personnel decisions. The evidence is already there but a Sherman hire makes it sound. The only recent decisions I’ve agreed with is their promotion of Dominick to GM and promotion of Morris to DC (Didn’t agree with the promotion to HC).

If we switch to a 3-4 Gurantee Haynesworth fiasco will flame back up… HE HATES being a NT on a 3-4. It was obvious in Washington and Patriots. Our only option would be to but a one legged man (brian price) at NT McCoy and Clayborn on DE’s and have Bowers become the OLB (pass rush). Even with that combo i don’t see it working. Maybe Roy Miller would get better as a NT? Bad moves all around..

Chilly and Nolan as coordinators I’m totally down with. Now we just need to switch Sherman for Marty and that would be a fantastic package deal.
However, if it really comes down to Sherman as HC with Chilly and Nolan as OC and DC it will still be a 1000% improvement over Raheem. Hands down.

As long as the Glazers are NOT stupid and pull the trigger early. I think Marty will talk them out of Sherman and into him as a HC. He has a way with words during his speeches, plus has the record. From what i read earlier. He really likes whats going on down here and is very interested.. Don’t let this guy slip through your fingers for a mediocre HC (at best).
NO ONE, and I MEAN NO ONE wants Sherman as a HC for the Bucs. From the fans, to old players, to analysts. If you thought the fan base went into a rage over Raheem. I dare you to put Sherman in there and watch the pitchforks come out just as quick to run another Coach off.

Sign Mike Zimmer from Cincy as our new Head Coach. Then sign Wade Phillips as our new Def. Coord. His style of 3-4, 5-2 type Ds are suited for our smaller faster LBs and Clayborne and Bowers could be end players and be solid OLB I think. Have Miller, Price, and McCoy and hopefully someone else new to add in there as our front. I think that could work.
As for our Off. Coord. look at Mike Sherman for that position. So our coaches would be…
Head Coach- Mike Zimmer
Offensive Coord.- Mike Sherman
Defensive Coord.- Wade Phillips
Talk about a coaching staff that we really need in the most desperate way!!! GO BUCS!!!!!

It appears we are going from bad to worse. I know a couple good retired high school coaches in Texas that are probably worth a look and both are in their 80’s. I just know the Golden Sperm Club is going to screw this up and we will be back to perennial losers……….. and the hits just keep on coming.

Suddenly experienced HC is spelling disastor for Bucs….we need to bring in another inexperienced coordinator with no track record (which I’m not against if it were the right one) but you blame the Glazers for going with experience after what the fan base has been saying about Raheem???? If the Glazers are interviewing on the road, why don’t they just stop in the middle of Dale Mabry and grab the nearest guy? I’m sure they could save a fortune. This may be a great coaching combination. It’s impossible to really know. However, I really can’t think of a less sexy hire than Sherman and Childress. In fact, it’s downright Fugly.

Joe, where’s your research and where’s the mention of the man that SHOULD be the next defensive coordinator?
Carolina Panthers secondary coach, Ron Meeks.Check out his track record with the Colts and Panthers. The Colts D was bottom 2 before he arrived and finished in the top 10 in 5 of 8 seasons then went back to bottom 10 the two seasons after he left.
Then he is replaced in Carolina by Sean McDermott and the Panther defense sucked this past year. This guy would be able to coach the talent that is presently on the Buc roster without needing to make wholesale changes (like the 3-4 loving Nolan would) and he has had excellent defenses despite coaching on a team that leaned heavily towards the offensive side of the ball in terms of payroll and draft and free agent priority.
