“No Interest” In Mike Mularkey
January 9th, 2012Friday afternoon, eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune made an appearance on “Primetime,” co-hosted by Ronnie Lane and Tom Krasniqi heard on WHBO-AM 1040.
The majority of the conversation was about the Bucs’ coaching search and Joe, as you can expect, took notes.
“As with most coaching searches, it’s easier to find out who [Team Glazer is] not interested in than who they are interested in,” Kaufman said.
“The more [Team Glazer looked] at Jeff Fisher’s resume, the more holes and chinks you can see in it. They are not interested. They don’t seem interested in Brian Billick for whatever reason. They don’t seem interested in Mike Mularkey. They have yet to contact Mike Zimmer.
“It doesn’t mean [Mike] Sherman will get this job, he is no lock to get it but there are compelling reasons to get him. You can argue you want Mike Sherman as an offensive coordinator [more] than head coach. Joe Philbin is getting a look at from some teams. Tom Clements has done a nice job.
“You can’t go with the unproven route after what has happened with Raheem Morris. But I do find Clements intriguing.
“There are mitigating factors in Buffalo for Mularkey. He resigned. He has some high integrity but I do not feel there is much interest from a Bucs standpoint.
“This will take at least another week. Whoever is brought back for a second interview is probably the guy. They are not taking the weekend off.
“Look, after [Dungy] was fired and they got Gruden, it took 35 days.
“It’s very ominous about the candidates. My feeling is, based on their past, they go the opposite of what they just had. You look, they went from Dungy to Gruden and from Gruden to Raheem and based on this failed experiment with Raheem, you figure they will go with the old school disciplinarian with head coaching experience.
“Rich Bisaccia, I’ve heard people bring up his name but I don’t put much stock into that.
“There are guys we haven’t mentioned which we don’t know about could be looked at. Can they come back with a guy with a wow factor?
“If it takes $2 million dollars you go out and get Steve Spagnuolo [as defensive coordinator]. He can work with young defensive lines. I want that man running my defense. I don’t care if he is rumored to be joining Andy Reid, you go get him!”
January 9th, 2012 at 9:04 am
Kinda happy mularky ain’t in the running saw his offense this weekend and he got plain outcoached and outsmarted by the giants dc.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:17 am
Why not Billick? Extensive search? Where?
January 9th, 2012 at 9:18 am
After seeing AGAIN how woefully the Atlanta offense has played (except against the BUCS) I’m thrilled to hear the Glazer’s aren’t dumb enough to think this guy is a great coach!
I’m really hoping they wait until they can talk to Clements or maybe even Winston Moss but after Rah’s fiasco I doubt they’ll even consider Moss. Perhaps as DC…..
January 9th, 2012 at 9:20 am
At least they didnt give into Sherman yet? @ Joe, why havent they gone after Russ Grimm? I like Russ as the HC, Clements as your OC, he can bring Freeman out of shell shock, and Spags to help our young defense.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:21 am
Not a fan of Mularkey or Fisher, so that’s good. No Marty or Childress, please.
Not sure why not Billick though.
Spagnuola (or Del Rio) as DC, absolutely. I’ve been singing that song before he was fired. Pay him.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:29 am
@bucfanjeff
Im with you on this one.
I never liked Billick. He was supposed top be a offense guy but never had one in Baltimore. He won with defense, so ill pass.
But Spags or Del Rio for the win please!
January 9th, 2012 at 9:37 am
Joe, I don’t remember the New Orleans Saints OC’s name, but I do remember his offense this weekend and almost every other one. If 5 is as good as we, most, think he is, imagine what this guy could do with the Bucs as HC.
Your thoughts.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:40 am
Complete Fools: these Glazers just stole our money and time for 3 years by trying to act like no resume RahRah Morris was a legit head coaching option after Gruden.
Now they are saying that they arent interested in Fisher or Mularkey because of holes in their resumes? Complete b.s. hypocrites.
What about Joe’s crush Dom’s resume? From the picking players of other NFL teams practice squads to fill out slots 45-53 on the roster to GM. And a guy who reportedly checks out daily at 4pm that might be a “hole” in his skillset.
Fisher’s resume has holes. Really? Now I think these Glazers are just liars.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:40 am
Why would Spags ever chose Tampa over Philly? THATS IDIOTIC
First, what makes Ira think Tampa would be able to pay Spags the same amount?
Why would he chose a young defense like ours where he has no connections to? Versus the Eagles where he was once the DC; they have two all pros in Babin and Nnamdi, along with another stud in Trent Cole.
If Spags ever wants another head coaching job, the choice is easy…
January 9th, 2012 at 9:43 am
Joe, The Bucs cannot go out and get Steve Spagnuolo for 2 million. You cannot pay the defensive coordinator more than the head coach. And that is the problem. They are looking for a Head Coach that will take less than 2.5 million, will be able to have terms dictated too.
This is why the Bucs will wait until all Head Coaching positions are filled. Its just like waiting until the market is closing. Then they will sweep in and get a bargain basement deal.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:53 am
@bucrealist.. Or they will just sign Sherman. No one is going after that guy.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:54 am
I don’t know about you guys but I’m fired up for the Mike Sherman era!
January 9th, 2012 at 10:01 am
I really hope you guys are not serious about Mike Sherman actually being a good head coaching candidate. No other team has even sniffed him as a head coach candidate since what 05. Dude’s a scrub coach. If Mark D hires him not only will you lose more fans then when Rah was the coach. The team will eventually suck even more and the players will abandon ship. This franchise is going to be a joke if he’s hired. Mark it down.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:07 am
@Thomas2.2
Please, don’t take ANYTHING Warren Sapp says seriously, he’s a woeful human being who likes to start trouble. If he is so smart, why isn’t he being courted/touted as a future NFL coach or a GM, huh? Millard really worked out well, he was Sapp’s boy.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:10 am
R they actually interested in Marty or did his agent just contact them?
January 9th, 2012 at 10:20 am
I don’t understand this anti Sherman talk. He’s a coach that has run successful offenses both in college and pros. He would bring instant discipline to a team that’s lacking. He also has the network to hire solid assistants.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:24 am
Does anyone else get the feeling that Thomas wouldn’t call anyone a complete fool to their face…
January 9th, 2012 at 10:29 am
The last time the Glazers hired a coach, they went with the first fast talking jackass who made up his own words that walked through the door. I don’t think Billick had the qualifications. Maybe Sherman threw out a few ‘yungrys’ and got the nod.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:31 am
What about Sherman as OC? I’ve never really watched any of his offenses. Does he have the playbook to be a good OC?
January 9th, 2012 at 10:32 am
Thomas is alright, he has a point.
Fischer and Mularkey have a “resume with holes”.
Dom has stunk, and is a total fact.
He should be removed.
Truth be told, The Cheap Owners have probably told DOm exactly what to do, but C’mon man.
Dom must go, he sucks.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:34 am
How closely did you Sherman supporters watch his performance in Green Bay?
I spend months up there each year, saw him in action, and talked with a number of knowledgeable Packer fans….who I think in general have as much or more knowledge as most football fans.
He had control of the team and FO in Green Bay, taking a Holmgren SB quality team, and being the primary decision maker helped it slowly deteriorate into a 4-12 team. He was a poor bench coach. The closest analogy I can make is Norv Turner in San Diego who coached a constantly underperforming team until they finally imploded. He couldn’t control Favre, nor did he take any action to deal with the issue as MM and TT did. That took courage, which Sherman didn’t have. And what has he accomplished since then but receive a pink slip?
If you want to polish the pile that would at best get us to where we already are as some guys are, you may. I guess the G boys can call in their markers to have some sell this guy us. But he is definitely not the answer. His agent is selling him to us. When did we have to take a guy like this that is being sold to us like ice cubes are sold to eskimos, as we used to say.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:35 am
@jdog
O you mean the same successful offenses that he got fired from. The packers successful o that couldn’t get to the big one with favre, antonio freeman, ahman green and a o line all in their prime? Or do you mean the texans that fired him as oc in 2 uneventful seasons. Or the college school Texas AM that fired him and payed him 6 million to leave? O those successful offenses? Yea I understand why he would be a good choice and don’t get the anti-sherman talk at all.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:38 am
@ JDog
The word on the interwebs is that Mike Sherman let Brett Favre run all over him at GB (he also seemed to underachieve with a Mike Holmgren-ready-made championship contender) and that he underwhelmed as a gameday coach in college (no halftime adjustments, deer in the headlights looks on the sideline). IMO he seems to be a respected offensive mind with a wholesome Dungy-type of personality…but his hire wouldn’t really move the dial for me.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:40 am
I’d take Bill Clinton over any of these A$$ clowns.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:42 am
Lol I don’t know of anyone on JBF who would describe themselves as Sherman “supporters”…
If he gets the job I’ll be bummed (just like I was bummed when they announced Rah) but I’ll back him until he shows that he doesn’t deserved to be backed anymore.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:45 am
@jdog. The guy was fired in the pros and college. He sucks and doesn’t get courted by anyone. If he gets hired it will look cheap from the Glazers standpoint and it will show how little Dominik is respected.
Of all the candidates I’ve heard mentioned as possible interviews, I’ll take Marty all day long. He’s 10 times the coach of Sherman.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:49 am
I agree with sensible buc. Sherman would be a dissapointment, but I’d get behind him with an open mind until he proves he doesn’t deserve it.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:49 am
I_Love#40: BTW- this team has no #40, and Gayle Sayers retired decades ago. lol
Obviously I think it is completely foolish to say that Fisher is excluded from consideration based on “holes” in his resume when we just suffered through the Rah/Dom (no resume) era.
I would be happy to say that to anyones face. A major problem seems to be Dom who apparently stays employed by not speaking the truth to the Glazers’ faces.
I am not antiSherman (nor anti-Dom but I am becoming that way based on what is occurring) but to suggest that Sherman’s resume does not have holes and Fisher’s or Mularkey’s does is “foolish” and wreaks of owners looking for excuses to hire a cheap option again.
We can only comment on what has been reported thus far (cheap coaches at the top of the list and expensive coaches not on the list). I think that all of us have a basis to be doubtful of the Glazers willingness to spend to be competitive. Let me be clear: I am not arguing for an expensive coach, I am arguing against excluding prosopects based on how much money they command or based on Dom getting his wittle feelings hurt by bringing in someone with a presence and backbone.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:50 am
And yes, I’d much rather have Marty than Sherman.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:50 am
Did it ever occur to anyone that these coaches thus far are just fodder because whom is really desired may still be coaching? Zimmer? Phillips? Clements? etc?
Though not impossible, is usually unlikely they interview while still in the playoffs.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:56 am
The Glazers are looking for the Cliff Floyd of NFL coaches. Been around, good leader of young men, has had failures, deserves a shot, and can add leadership to the whole organization. And…comes pretty cheap

MIKE ZIMMER
January 9th, 2012 at 11:04 am
No thanks 2 Mularkey! He just got shutout. That’s hilarious to me, because some1 was just telling me the Falcons O is waaaaay more explosive than the Giants. That’s a knee slapper.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:15 am
Other than Marty, who may not be a candidate, the others are very unrockstar.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:19 am
@Thomas,
Now you think the Glazers are liars? They have BEEN lying and will continue. That’s the primary reason they more than likely kept Dominik around because he would go along with the program.
Thomas let me bring up a point and see how you all view. So the Cowboys, Redskins, and Raiders continue to be the most profitable franchises in the NFL annually. Is that by coincidence or chance. No the owners are competitive, love their teams, market them to keep them relevant, and no matter what they field entertaining players. Also the owners of those franchises invest considerable assets into those teams externally and maintain consulting relationships with football people that have been around. Thats why Jerry does not hire a GM because he consults with football sources all over and he cares about his team more than anyone. This season would have been great for the Glazers to come down to the sidelines to put the players on notice but its not them and neither is winning. Thomas, you are dead on and I have no reason to bust on you and I have not in 4-5 months. I can admit when I am wrong and I initially bought into the lies but the truth is there for over a decade now.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:22 am
Now, now, let’s stop with the Dom bashing. I agree he sucks but Joe loves him.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:31 am
Mean D Says:
January 9th, 2012 at 11:22 am
Now, now, let’s stop with the Dom bashing. I agree he sucks but Joe loves him.
DON’T STOP Believing, NO STOP DOM BASHING! He sucks, and it will continue for as long as he is reffered to as a “ROCKSTAR”.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:40 am
@ thomas2.duh ~ No #40??
Remember the 1996 Round 2 Draft Pick?
Or His 5,427 Rushing Yards 3.7 YPC 64 TD
Or his 2,445 Receiving Yards 7.5 average 13 TD?
I am thinking that is the #40 being refereed to,
By the way his name is Mike Alstott.
January 9th, 2012 at 11:41 am
referred*
January 9th, 2012 at 12:00 pm
Really Rusty? Are you sure?
Only 3.7 yards per carry? seemed like more.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:18 pm
Thomas That I do agree with you about, it always felt like more yards but he was usually carrying people with him.
