Bucs Eyeing Marty Chokenheimer
January 8th, 2012The Bucs have not stopped in their quest to replace jettisoned coach Raheem Morris. So far, the Bucs have interviewed Mike Sherman, Jerry Gray and apparently have turned their sights to the notorious Marty Chokenheimer, per Chris Mortensen via BSPN’s Twitter account.
@mortreport: Marty Schottenheimer is on Bucs’ radar but not at top; he is hungry to coach. Note that Marv Levy went to his 4th Super Bowl at age 68.
Now Joe has admiration for Chokenheimer, who is coming off a UFL championship this past season. Chokenheimer is a no-nonsense coach who won’t put up with a lot of nonsense that Morris tolerated if not enabled.
And Joe can assure you that if LeGarrette Blount is on the roster, Chokenheimer will use him, pound him, game after game. The misuse of Blount by the Bucs coaching staff last year was borderline criminal.
That stated, Chokenheimer has richly earned his nickname. No coach in recent NFL history has so often dominated regular season play with punishing defenses and a pounding running game better than Chokenheimer whether at Cleveland or Kansas City or San Diego.
But each and every time that team guided by Chokenheimer gagged in the playoffs. An absolute Heimlich maneuver.
Chokenheimer would be a great tease, probably better than Chucky. But don’t bank on any Super Bowls much less NFC title games with Chokenheimer as coach.
Regular seasons would be fun though.
Per Mort, the Bucs also will interview Brad Childress (Joe’s praying with his rosary as he types that interview fails) and are also looking at Mike Zimmer and the pure definition of “retread” coach, Wade Phillips.

I like Marty. He’s not at the top of my list, but we could do a lot worse. He’d at least get this franchise whipped back in shape.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:02 pm
TJ Rives suggesting there is a “stealth” candidate. Hoping it is Billick.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:02 pm
I like Marty too. This is a highly qualified professional Head Coach who commands immediate respect.
I hope he is seriously considered!
January 8th, 2012 at 2:03 pm
Ripping Marty because his team chokes in the playoffs is funny. At least his teams get to the playoffs. Right now, under present management, the Bucs look miles away from being a playoff caliber team. Marty can coach and can assemble a staff who can properly teach the game to a young team. He may not be the guy to get the Bucs to another Super Bowl, but he can put us on the right track.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:04 pm
I’d take him. He has done wonders with each team he has coached.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:04 pm
beggars can’t be choosers…I harken back to “Florida Girl” 3-4 weeks ago..the team will be sold/has been agreed to.
Under that premise…The Buc’s would not have sucked this bad this year and Rah’s would still be HC going into the year the team was sold(end of 2012) a cheap clean slate for the new ownership.
The Buc players caught a wiff and quit…knowing the coach they were playing for in 2011 was a lame duck….as well as the WHOLE roster….now the GBoyz are in a kosher pickle barrel…
and US
the fans
in utter confusion…….
January 8th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
I think Marty is a guy that not only do the job today, but that fans could get behind.
Now, just imagine if that “stealth” guy was Jon Gruden. He’d have the QB AND the CAP money available to go to war!
I know, I know, but I wound not be disappointed if it DID happen.
Back to Marty……..I’m down with it.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
I believe Marty will bring in a qualified coaching staff and be able to direct
Mark Dumbnik. Get Marty!
January 8th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
I like Marty and I don’t think there is a different coaching approach for the regular season or game planning for the post season. He’s been successful everywhere and hasn’t been sitting on his as$ the past couple of yrs like these other retreads. Anyone who can have success at Cleveland should be given an interview lmao
January 8th, 2012 at 2:11 pm
Marty Schottenheimer, I think, is due. This is turning out to be a pretty bad offseason to be looking for a Head Coach. Nobody really stands out to me. More than anything, I just want a team that I can be proud of again and not have to wear a jacket over my Bucs shirts and jerseys anymore.
I think in order for the cream of this team to rise to the top the next Head Coach will need to weed out the garbage players right off the bat. The Talib’s and Black’s of the team need to be jetisoned as soon as the league year starts. We need a coach with the balls to do just that.

B-I-L-L-I-C-K
January 8th, 2012 at 2:13 pm
I like Zim too
January 8th, 2012 at 2:20 pm
Marty is a great coach and i would love to see it.
chokenheimer is a cheap shot IMO. Not his fault Elway performed two miracle drives.
Its all about being in the tourney where anything can happen.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:27 pm
wow – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Schottenheimer
Chokenheimer he is not
January 8th, 2012 at 2:28 pm
I am totally down with Gruden returning, and would jump with Joy, if that happens (highly doubtful)
As far as Marty goes, I fear the game may have passed him by. The NFL of today is a passing league, and the old school power running game concept that was a trademark of Schottenheimer teams of years past may not be as successful today, as it was in years past.
Then, there is the problem of Mark Dominik, and I can see Marty and him butting heads, unless total control is awarded him by the Glazers.

After Pats lose Super Bowl to Saints on Feb 5 Hoodie does not board team flight from Indy to Chowderville. Multiple draft picks involved. King Craft has second thoughts as slurring Masshole villagers gather torches and pitchforks. Far to the south yunemployed pewter clad fans clamor at TIA as midnight strikes and apprentice Bellicheat arrives hand in hand with the Sith Lord, Darth Parcells. Meanwhile Dominque stands in rain soaked parking lot with card board boxes as his One Buc Palace access badge no longer works. J-Fro swiftly dealt back home to Kansas for M.Cassel and 3rd round pick. Timestamp… Mark it down.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:36 pm
How does a coach go 14-2 and get fired?
January 8th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Yeah thats just what we nee another “there is a gleam men a gleam…..” speech
January 8th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
I think we’re all burying the lead…BRAD CHILDRESS!!!!!
I’m running to buy tickets now.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:40 pm
LOL
I would be shocked if it were Brad Childress. And not pleasantly.
I just don’t see that happening, does ANYONE?
January 8th, 2012 at 2:42 pm
MIKE ZIMMER
January 8th, 2012 at 2:43 pm
would Wade Phillips be willing to run a 4-3 defense tho? We have way to much invested in our D-line to switch to a 3-4
January 8th, 2012 at 2:45 pm
Schottenheimer’s last NFL “choke”: 14-2 Chargers that didn’t make the play-offs on a ranking technicality. I’d be happy with him.
If they get serious about Childress, which no one should ever have been serious about him, I’m walking.
Schottenheimer and billick would be great veteran choices. Otherwise, they need a proven OC or DC from winning teams in the current playoff series.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:49 pm
22 years as head coach and two losing seasons?
awesome.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
Schottenheimer is the perfect guy to hire for turning around teams. He’s also won 60% of his games as a HC.
But if we’re gonna interview a 68 year old guy, why don’t we contact Jimmy Johnson as well? Same age, but he has a couple SB rings and he built a DYNASTY in Big D.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
If I recall correctly in his last year at SD, weren’t the Bolts ahead late in the 4th quarter when Marlon McCree intercepted Brady, but was stripped by Brown trying to run the ball back giving possession back to NE with under 7 minutes and the Bolts up 8.
Pats go ahead in the game, the Bolts have a chance to tie the game in regulation with a 54 yd FG, but Kaeding leaves it short on pretty calm and warm weather day.
Marty would be a great choice.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:55 pm
With Marty comes Brian Shottenheimer as OC, good or bad?
January 8th, 2012 at 2:57 pm
I’d love for the Bucs to have a chance to choke in the playoffs. It’s better to choke in the playoffs than every one of their 16 regular season games.
Marty likes big backs and to throw the ball down the field. His defenses (usually but not always a 3-4) are always tough and hard-nosed. Some of his teams choking undoubtedly has something to do with his players choking as well… considering the Chargers haven’t even qualified for the playoffs the past two seasons, it’s easy to see that the team has regressed since he left, not gotten better.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:58 pm
I’d support a Schottenheimer hire enthusiastically. While Billick is more of a CEO type and a delegator, Marty is a hands-on disciplinarian. Exactly what this team needs.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:05 pm
Joe rips Marty for losing in the post-season yet praised Rah and Dom for finishing 3rd in the division and never getting there. .?
January 8th, 2012 at 3:09 pm
I would like for both Marty and Brian schottenheimer to come here.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
So he’s being bashed because he can get teams to the playoffs but hasn’t won a SB? I mean if this was the ’01 Buccaneers, okay fine. But with this team that’s your criticism?
At this point he’s at the top of my list. Someone who can turn the team around, create a professional atmosphere, conduct a real football practice and maybe get the team to the playoffs in the next 3 years despite Jackass GM Mark Dominik’s awful use of free agency money and lackluster drafts? Sign me up.
I’ll worry about him choking in the playoffs once we start getting to the playoffs with some consistency.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:29 pm
Remember, our list of coaches can’t be too long and comprehensive bc we can only hire someone who doesn’t threaten our pimple-faced, Clay Aiken GM.
That leaves a list of precisely: well nobody.
Dom is looking for a 19 year old young man with no football experience so Dom’s last place resume (he does have one next to last) is superior!
January 8th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
Marty is great at player evaluation. Look at his drafts.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:02 pm
I like Marty, but if we’re gonna be looking at a 68 year old veteran coach, why not interview Jimmy Johnson?
He’s got a couple of Super Bowl rings and built a dynasty in Dallas during the 90’s.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:14 pm
Marty or Billick….The only two retreads that are available that have won consistently. I would be happy with either one as neither would tolerate nor offer excuses for mediocrity.
January 8th, 2012 at 5:15 pm
Is that what we have been reduced to…..”beggars can’t be chosers”.
Who in the world would be compelled to spend big bucs to see a bunch of “beggar bucs” play.
9 years ago we were on the top of the league and we have been reduced to this? Great job, Glazer boys. The Howard brothers couldn’t have acted such a senerio out better. I guess that is what you get when “lesser minds also called chips off the malcolm block” hire nearly amatuers to make major decisions in constructing a team.
I guess it would be like me, who plays poker once a decade, sitting down in a world series of poker tournament and expect to win just because I say so and I can convince a bunch of gullible guys to believe in staking me because I say I know what I’m doing.
January 8th, 2012 at 5:42 pm
Mark2001, I agree. Look at what the Glazers have done to us.
We had Gruden, a coach most teams only dream of, but he came with a shopping list the Glazers were too cheap to fill. So, they fired him, and sprung Dom and Raheem on the good people of Tampa, who taxed themselves to build a stadium for them with a sweetheart deal on it to boot.
Now, we find ourselves willing to take ANY Coach because it is slim pickings out there. And even IF it weren’t slim pickings, what big name coach wants to end his legacy by coming to Tampa, and working with the clowns we have as owners ?
Honestly, it looks like it will be Mike Sherman, and under the circumstances, it is probably the best we can do.
January 8th, 2012 at 5:58 pm
my three favorite coaches would be billick, marty, and zimmer with clements as oc
January 8th, 2012 at 6:51 pm
@M2001: were you talking about the Stooges? Howard Fine and Howard? LOL!!!!!
January 8th, 2012 at 6:57 pm
@Apple ” We had Gruden, a coach most teams only dream of, but he came with a shopping list the Glazers were too cheap to fill.” I can sure remember several hot items on that list that cost plenty, Charlie Garner, Derrick Deese*, Matt Stinchcomb. The list went on and on, and every year another new shopping list. Maybe if we had some better drafts during Grudens time here he would have done better. But what we gave up to get him hurt him in the end, several top draft choices.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:05 pm
ty, i agree 100%. and althought its prob VERY unlikely, i’d love to see Spagnuolo as the D coordinator
January 8th, 2012 at 9:41 pm
Id love for Marty to come here. Better than anyone we’ve interviewed thus far or the names listed as possible interviews. If he can build the team to make the playoffs but not get it done we can always bring Chucky in to close the deal. How many times did he make the playoffs and did he win any playoff games? I personally have always liked him.
January 8th, 2012 at 11:24 pm
You got it Brocktacular.
It’s Yuck Yuck Yuck all the way to the bank with the Glazer’s at one Buc.
January 8th, 2012 at 11:56 pm
I would love to have Marty S. in Tampa. Hope we get him..
January 9th, 2012 at 5:08 am
Fire Dumbgy and then it was Gruden- Bucs fanbase is a bunch of whiny fairweather fans. Ownership overeacts after a bad season and we start all over again. Get behind this team and show up for the games and give whomever gets this hc job a chance- (more than three years please)
