Brian Billick Talks All Things Head Coaching

January 7th, 2012

Don’t tell former Ravens head coach and current FOX NFL analyst Brian Billick he’s some sort of power-hungry potential head coach that would come to the Bucs demanding power and control. Billick says that’s way off the mark.

Check out this very interesting Billick interview on The Dan Sileo Show on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday. Among lots of juicy head-coaching talk, Billick says he believes the Bucs need to “address some things along the offensive line,” and says “the Bucs need a Darren Sproles type.”

  1. IN Bucs Fan Says:

I want this guy for the Bucs. I had some other thoughts, but listening to his characterization of what the Bucs need to do brought my thoughts full circle back to him. Come on Glazers and Dominik, ante up for Billick!

  2. CoachG Says:

I agree completely on the Sproles comment, we could also use a Desean Jackson type

  3. BigMacAttack Says:

I love this guy. He is so intelligent and so well spoken. He knows football and what it takes to be successful. If he is our next head coach, I have no doubt he will surround himself with the best staff and players. This is what we need. As Trump says in the end: “You’re Hired!”

  4. BigMacAttack Says:

Chris Carter would make a good WR’s coach. I don’t think there is a more respected candidate as a whole right now than Brian Billick.

  5. BigMacAttack Says:

Lastly, top tier free agents and coaches will want to came and work for Billick. I’m excited just thinking about him, even if they were to hire him as a Parcells type, chief of all football operations to mentor Dominick and an up and coming coach like Tom Clements or Chuzinski. We need this guy in the House.

  6. ClayBURN94 Says:

Id take brian billick. He never had a good quarterback in baltimore and hes shown he knows what coordinatrs to bring in.

  7. Pete 422 Says:

I heard this interview as I drove into work. Interesting that he was very diplomatic with as far as coaching. To me that says he is interested and it sounds to me he would entertain offers to coach the Bucs, especially with the fact he had some very specific ideas on what the Bucs need.

I have been saying all along, Billick would be my first choice. The fact that he talked about developing the offense around the talent of that a team already has only solidifies he has a great mind set to be successful where ever he goes. The whole “I’m not power hungry” thing sounds like a man who would consider the Bucs job.

  8. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

@BigMacAttack, ditto that brother! Plus, my sister thinks he’s is good looking (she likes em tall)
I too love Brian Billick, and I agree totally with all he says.
But WHAT do we do about The “Rockstar” ?
Maybe, with some additional scouting help, the Rockstar will be ok ?

  9. Northend Says:

Any info on if the brothers g or dom has reached out.this would b my choice hire.

  10. eric Says:

Sign him up. Made more sense than Rah did in three years.

  11. Macabee Says:

Billick sounds interested and willing to negotiate, but this hire would scare Dominik to death because of his stature! Dominik was there when Gruden chased McKay away. Not happening!

  12. Bobby Says:

Billick, unlike a lot of fans…doesn’t have a real problem with the drafts Dom has gotten. He believes in the talent, he would just bring good coaching, get rid of the driftwood and bring in more talent. I wouldn’t mind him as HC.

  13. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

Hard to make an argument against him after hearing that interview.

Especially since the things he’s said are exactly what I’ve been feeling for the Bucs.

Okay, so I’ll add one retread to my list 😉

    1) Tom Clements
    2) Guss Grimm
    3) Brian Billick

On a side note…I can’t stand Sileo, but I’ll give him props for that interview…although I could tell he was trying to get Brian to denounce Dominick.

  14. bucfanjeff Says:

I’ve always liked Billick and when the ‘fire raheem’ chants started, suggested Billick as HC\OC and Spagnuola or Del Rio as DC.
It would be an experienced staff that sets expectations and discipline.

  15. adam ant Says:

With Fisher out of the picture, this is the guy! He is exactly what this team needs. Make it happen Glazers!!

  16. mbaby Says:

I say someone needs to make 4 copies of this and put them on tapes and mail them to all the Glazer and Dominik and mark them very urgent from ur fans.

  17. Bucnjim Says:

How can you not strongly consider him for the job? Professional, Intelligent and sounds like a big X’s & O’s guy as well. Probably would bring some credibility to a team that’s pretty much been the laughing stock of the entire NFL. I think this could be the move to help this franchise get back on track, but I’m just not familar enough with him to make a great judgement.

  18. Garret Says:

hahaha and we need a randy moss type receiver, with a barry sanders type running back. All behind an o-line like the cowboys had in the nineties and a defense like the bears in the eighties!! you guys are a joke to fall for this guys hype, there is a reason he wasn’t hired as a head coach after leaving the ravens! he was known as the QB killer, cause of all the QBs he drafted that failed. all i am saying is anyone can say we need this and that.. but we need someone who is proven and has done it before, and Billick is like Gruden, got somebody elses team to win a super bowl!!!???

  19. Garret Says:

Kind of seems like a lot of support for billick? are these planted comments?? record 4 tapes and mail them to the glazers? i want this guy! Go get him Glazers? like come on id rather give a nobody a shot, cause you never know you might have a diamond in the rough! Instead of a sports analysis for the past 3 years!! DONT GET SOMEBODY NOBODY ELSE HAS EVEN INTERVIEWED GLAZERS get someone that the rest of the NFL wants!!

  20. k1ngAdroc Says:

we could do worse…. (looking at you mike sherman)

  21. jarrett Says:

If only there was a darren sproles type free agent last year, and if we could only pay that guy less than our punter. If that guy only existed.

  22. Jim Says:

    Hey Joe,
tell the Glaziers to hire this guy!

  23. sandbagrudy Says:

I have been listening to this guy for years and mentioned his name on this thread frequently. The sad thing about it is the Buccaneers don’t seem to want someone on his levell as he was illusively saying without calling them cheap and commited to Mark Dominic. So with that said we’ll be here three years from now sharing the same negitive energy sort of like fart in an old sofa something stinks in Tampa

  24. BigEl Says:

Great interview, the guys sharp with a good track record, and didn’t say youngry once.

  25. Bill Says:

I said at the midway point of this losing streak that Billick was the guy we needed. This interview just reinforced that thought. He could come in and bring life to this team and this fan base. He would energize the organization. THIS IS THE GUY!!!

  26. McBuc Says:

Apple…Outside of rounds 5 – 7, what players are so aweful that the Bucs have drafted in the last 3 years? Don’t say “injury prone McCoy”, because he was not known that way in college so there was no way to know. Free has had one good year and one bad, not uncommon. Bowers and Clayborne? They seem solid to me. Foster? He seems like a keeper. Stocker? he performed like a rookie TE, which he was. Mike Williams, sophmore slumps are common among WRs. Benn, has not been used properly, he will be fine. Show me any team in the NFL that has hit on every draft pick in the last 3 years….Oh, that’s right, none of them.

  27. mikeToledoOHbucsfan Says:

He’s our guy, we should at least interview him..

  28. TurnThePage Says:

Wow! This is the guy. Not because of his interview, but reading through the fans comments, most everyone is positive about Bryan.

An thats what we need… fan commitment for the HC.

  29. RustyRhino Says:

I Like Brian Billick, he has the attitude I like in a HC he takes no BS from players taking a few plays off here and there, if that happens they find their way to the former NFL player list Quickly. He has been a successful HC coach & cordinator in his stops he sure made another big strong arm QB successful in the nfc north. Bring him in for a interview and don’t let himleave without signing no less than a 4 year contract.

  30. LOLJFH Says:

This IS definitely THE GUY. Notice he also said he couldn’t be pigeonholed as well as he was proud to have the offensive AND defensive records in different years because he ADAPTED. What? Huh? Who says that?? A brilliant coach. He also stated the GM-HC status is a “relationship”. He seemed to shy away from a few softballs DS threw and I got the impression yesterday he was “under surveillance”.
He’s the man. I will be the first to say I would buy tix again if he is our HC.

Joel? Mark?? Hello? Hello? (tap, tap, tap) Is this thing on???

  31. Big Marlon B Says:

well, Apple’s sister thinks Billick is good looking….so i guess that means he’s the right man for the job!!

seriously dude, sometimes i wonder what goes through your head while your fingers are on the keyboard. that being said, i think Billick is the perfect man for the job. he has seemed to be enamored with the potential of the Bucs dating back to last season, and i think he is the right man to get us back on track. he shows intensity and can demand respect from the players, but he also seems like the kind of guy they would love to play for….they will know he has their back.

Apple, stick to discussing football. between u and “adam from ny”, ur attempts at humor are sad.

  32. Ferbicus Says:

If the Glazers are serious about winning, and serious about their promise the the fans about doing whatever and spending whatever it takes to put a winner on the field, then they will at least interview Billick. Lets face it, Mike Sherman was just fired by a college football program. He’s not the answer. Billick has a plan, has a good football IQ and believes in the talent the Bucs have. He could mold Freeman in to a polished QB and would attract big name FA. If the Glazers listening, and are serious about their promise, they will at least give Billick an interview. It’s what the fans want and it’s the right move. But given the track record the Glazers have, I’m not getting my hopes up…. But hey, at least Manchester United is gonna have a great season again!

  33. LOLJFH Says:

Read the book “Next Man Up” by John Feinstein written about a year behind the scenes with the Ravens. This man is amazing AND the real deal.

  34. Tye Says:

I too completely CONCUR Brian Billick for the Bucs new HC…..With his past experiences of coaching coupled with the time he has spent observing all the teams around the NFL the past few years he has bound to have gathered info that could become a great asset to the Bucs organization…. Something the Bucs have been lacking the past few years!

  35. mark2001 Says:

If the Glazers don’t at least talk to this guy, they are fools.

He has the name and track record that would give the fans another look at what is going on. He could attract some talented FA’s and he has the mindset to provide the structure so desperately needed. He is miles beyond Shermee….

But I’m not sure they are smart enough or care enough to do so.

  36. Patrick Says:

I like Brian Billick and think he’s much better than Fisher. I like his personality, attitude, and I trust him as a HC.

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

Big Marlon, don’t take everything so seriously, and occasionally respect other’s comments and opinions. Apple was being humorous, and I along with everyone else here make outlandish comments from time to time. It is known as thinking outside the box. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. I think we all want what is best for the team even though we may not see the same path there. I respect the fact you have been a JV football coach, but that doesn’t mean every other Buc fan knows less or doesn’t study the game and the players any less. Hate on the haters, but give the rest their due.

When you listen to the few leaks of information that have come from 1 Buc or those claiming to have inside sources, Billick fits the billet. Another thing with our buddy Apple, and his inside rumors, is htat Billick also fits into that as well. He very well could be the Bucs’ choice and may have been for a while now. Who knows? Just sayin.

  38. Bucbeliever Says:

I’d love to have Brian Billick here as HC. The way he announces Buc games makes me feel like he’d like to coach here.

    GO BUCS!

  39. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

I won’t say he’s THE guy, but he is certainly one of the three strongest candidates.

I love how he addressed the Offensive Line, who seem to have gotten a pass from the staff.

  40. Big Marlon B Says:

i have never been a JV coach but thanks for the credit lol. and i’m not trying to say i know more than anybody else, because that would be completely ridiculous. much like everyone else on here, 90% of what i say is personal opinion and speculation.

i have no problem at all with people cracking jokes. the Clay Aiken/Mark Dominik “rockstar” comparison was one of the funniest things i’ve heard in a long time. someone saying their sister likes tall guys is just random and really makes no sense. if ur going to be funny, try actually being funny.

if i offended anyone, i apologize.

  41. BigMacAttack Says:

Sorry Big Marlon, I misread your JV comment the other day, which by the way, most of your comments are on the money.

Did anyone also notice how Billick said he was a big Raheem Morris fan, but that it was an understandable termination? I liked Raheem alot, and his personality was great, just not what the team needed I guess. I know its over but I can’t help but wonder if Rah had all the tools/pieces needed if he would have been successful. I think so, and if that one K2 pass interference call that kept the Bucs from the playoffs may have been the difference. The team last season was so much more poised and I believe Raheem could have taken them deep into playoffs and possibly all the way.

    Rose colored glasses.

  42. Northend Says:

What Billick didn’t say was the most interesting. When asked has he talked to us or had conversations about our opening he declined comment and said he does not kiss and tell.If he wants the job and they were not in discussions he would have said he was interested but no one has reached out. I bet we are in negotiations with him and some of the assistants may still be wrapped up in playoffs.Maybe i am dreaming but it has been to quiet in both camps.

  43. Northend Says:

Zimmer info for those defense minded folks out there
    http://www.bucsnation.com/2012/1/7/2689399/mike-zimmer-head-coach-buccaneers-tampa-bay

  44. ClayBURN94 Says:

@northend i hope your right about Billick because we havent done SQUAT!!!

  45. chargedcbh13 Says:

WOW, 1 five minute radio interview and now everybody wants him!!!!! I wonder what would happen if Sherman gave an interview….. Hmmm

  46. Big Marlon B Says:

i cant speak for everyone but u can go back and look thru other posts, i’ve been saying i like Billick as soon as Raheem got fired….maybe even before that.

  47. Landingstrip Says:

I have job at a local private airport in Tampa Bay and have seen Billick in recently. I would assume he is in town to interview with the Glazers. Just an FYI Bucs fans.

  48. loweredexpectations Says:

please, for the love of god… sign him!

  49. DSZ Says:

I like Billick a lot….I don’t think there is a chance in hell they hire him, but I like him. The old rumblings about Billick were he was the smartest guy in the room and didn’t mind letting you know about it. I doubt seriously that Dom is going to hire somebody who may question his authority or football acumen. Unfortunately, thats why I think we’ll either get a first time HC or a retread just happy to get another shot. They don’t want somebody to work with Dom, they want somebody to do what Dom says without question.

  50. Rrsrq Says:

Billicks familiarity with the Bucs comes from the many games he covered for Fox. He knows the personnel, could be a good hire

  51. mark2001 Says:

    Charge….

Sherman couldn’t get it done in Green Bay. Favre owned him. He couldn’t win as a professional coach or college coach. Anyone that would be happy with him is lacking in gray matter.

  52. TurnThePage Says:

Just bring in Billick so everyone will be happy.

  53. chargedcbh13 Says:

Never said I want Sherman, I don’t. Just making a point. Not sure about Billick, I would be VERY surprised if Team Glazer hired Billick. This YOUNG team needs a coach who demands respect. I think Cowher, Billick, would have that walking in the door. Like I told my teams, I don’t have to earn your respect, I’ll take it… I have no idea who there going to hire, b/c this team is so young and we have a franchise QB, this is a critical choice.

  54. Rickster Says:

Its just weird how quiet it is at obp. Im dyin! I need answers!!
    Billick please….

  55. AfghanZach Says:

Billick should be our number one and only candidate…. he said it right, we need NFL head coaching experience… he has demonstrated he can properly utilize the talent he has and play to their strengths! We NEED HIM, not a coordinator!

  56. sandbagrudy Says:

That Vikings offense he coordinated was loaded to Kill Chris Carter Robert Smith Jake Reed Randy Moss total Bomb Squad he’s a great motivator of talent to boot. He’s no John the rain man Madden lol my feet are wet again but long pockets Glaser seems to be stuck on stupid and won’t make this winning formula happen

  57. ty Says:

i like billick if you bring in tom clements at oc and spags as dc that would be perfect and given billicks resume he could probably pull this off because good coordinators would want to be on his staff

  58. TurnThePage Says:

I’m still amazed how positive this fanbase is towards Billick… not because he doesnt deserve it, but because the usual Buccaneer comments on JBF rarely are inline with this much agreement.

And I dont think JBF has a lot of clone repliers either.
