Getting The Most Out Of Players
November 18th, 2011With rare exception, JoeBucsFan.com sticks to Bucs-related material. After all, this is your mecca for all things Bucs. But today Joe must comment on the fascinating game on NFL Network last night. (Yes, Joe still thinks your manhood is in question if you don’t have the channel.)
Seeing how John Fox and the Broncos have completely transformed their offense to get the most out of their lack of talent at quarterback is truly remarkable. Winning with wishbones and options against the Jets defense? Unbelievable.
Joe’s not suggesting the Bucs dive into such a bizarre hybrid of ancient NFL and modern college ball, but what the Broncos are doing speaks to the value of an offensive coordinator. The Broncos could have stuck with the offense they ran with Kyle Orton to start the season, stuck Tim Tebow in it and then blamed “execution” when he failed, but their coaches took the reigns and crafted something that maximized their talent.
Joe’s seen largely these same Bucs score points left and right during the second half of last season, and have their moments this year. Yeah, the players must execute, but if they continue to fail, the coaches might have to reassess everything in a hurry.
As Joe’s written, the essence of coaching — win or lose — is getting the most out of your talent.

Yes and this was the perfect example of why the Bucs excuses don’t fly.

Tebow is a closer, no doubt about it. But last night’s game also showed how nice it is to have a highly-touted rookie (Von Miller – # 2 overall) come in and actually make plays all over the field AND not hurt his arms. What a concept!

After watching Tebow beat my Seminoles every year with that fake to the RB then run up the middle, its shocking that it works in the pros.
He faked the corner out of his shoes on that touchdown run.
Point well made on the coaching. Fox is doing a masterfull job, as is Harbaugh.
I remember years ago Marv Levy was running some version of the wishbone with the chiefs, and they were using it in that famous rain game at the old Tampa Stadium where the bucs won the Division tile 3-0. Didn’t work againt Mr. Selmon.

No Doubt … Our Offensive playcalling is just Offensive. Lacks creativity and rhythm. How often do you see the Packers style drop back hit the 5th step and fire the ball to a spot and let the receiver run into it … It just doesnt happen .. I saw it 1 time to Mike Williams last week down the sideline and it worked.
Freeman always drops 7 steps then tries to search for the open guy when we have receivers that struggle to get separation. The Bucs should run the No-Huddle more often while running the Ball out of it too.
Plus its just boring to watch.

And did anyone see how Aaron Rodgers keeps his right leg back in the shotgun around the goal line to Fire the ball off as soon as he is ready ???

Hey Sporty Doug, kinda nice to have Elvis who HAS been injured play great too huh?? Funny how you overlooked that one….

I was at that game last night and the broncos offense didn’t do anything till the last drive. That offense does not work in the NFL! The broncos won due to their defense not Tebow. Not being a broncos fan watching last nights game in person just proved to me that either of those two quarterbacks will never be legit threats, great ending to the game though

@bobby
Final stat line:
Von Miller – 9 tackles, 1 assist, 1.5 sacks for 12 yard loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 pass defended
Elvis Dumervil – 2 tackles, 1 assist, 1.5 sacks for 5 yard loss
Von Miller was the best player on the field for the Broncos last night and it wasn’t even close. I’m just saying, it’s nice to see a dominating performance out of a high-drafted rookie. That’s what you expect from guys you take in the top 5. (cough cough McCoy cough cough)
November 18th, 2011 at 11:23 am
I have seen all the games and plenty of replays… I do not get the playcalling bashing.
A handful of times … sure… just like every single OC out there
BUT the vast majority of the issues have been penalties and execution. The penalties have absolutely destroyed their ability to use Blount and the execution falls squarely on the WRs and Freeman’s shoulder’s.
Sure Olsen can take some blame, but he is not the WR’s lacking separation or not continuing a route which causes Freeman to dump it 2 yards.
AND he is not Freeman forcing throws and not setting his feet and basically executing worse this year than he did last year.

Sporty Doug
Most rookies don’t dominate and McCoy has been the single biggest reason for most the teams sacks and success against the run. Whatever… I am done arguing for him with people who CLEARLY have no idea what they are looking at when watching a DT.
I will agree on Von Miller though. I was not sold on him in the draft because I never saw him play the pass well in college. basically the Bronco’s said… does not matter… you do not have to.
They just send him after the QB or RB every single snap.
With that kind of freedom (ala the great, coked up LT) he should rack up stats.

“McCoy has been the single biggest reason for most the teams sacks and success against the run.”
We’re 31st in the league in sacks and 25th against the run… Look at all that success!
November 18th, 2011 at 11:37 am
Oops I made an error, we’re actually 29th against the run.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:37 am
I completely agree. Our coaches are failing this team. Specifically on an offense that is pretty much set with its personnel.
I just wanted to point out the Broncos defense held the Jets to a mere 13 points and scored 7 of their own. The past two games the Broncos have come with a smothering defense allowing only 23 points total. Against the Raiders they forced 4 turnovers and scored on special teams. Their defense is winning these games.
Yes, the Broncos are getting the most out of Tebow(which isn’t much at all) and their talent. If our coaches could do the same, we’d be 7-2 with a very scary offense.

I sat thru that drek last night, only because I started Dirty Sanchez and sat Rivers in my league, yeah 8 pts. Anyway, that was 55 minutes of horrible football, but a great ending. My biggest take away was John Elway’s expression as Timmy was moving his team downfield in that last drive, you could read his mind “Holy ****, now I’ll never be able to get rid of him” No fear Johnny, you’ll be able to move Timmy, here’s why. David Ross the 2nd most hated owner in the NFL is going to hand his team over to Urban Myer and then trade for Timmy. Did you really thing that Gator Weekend at Whatever-The-Name-This-Week Stadium wasn’t a recruiting party for Urban, then having Timmy start and the Fish finally sellout this season, oh no, it’s gonna be UF South in Miami Gardens next season.

The Jets are an average team with a terrible quarterback. Mile High is very tough to play in–The altitude is killer, I was out of breath from tying my shoe.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:01 pm
That’s what this game was about for me, besides being a Tebow homer; how does a real OC adjust his offense to the weapons he has to win games. More than any of our own games, this one proved to me that Greg Olson is better suited to something else in life. It’s still Movember, we can ditch him now and he can grow a mustache and manage a Denny’s.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:10 pm
The Coaching in Tampa IS the problem, hello.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Tebow, lol. You bet against him if you want. Not me.
He has two things going for him. First, some people are blessed with talent. Even more rare, others are just blessed. Tebow is the latter.
The kid is just a born winner. I’m not a Gator fan, but if you watched him at all, you realize that the guy is just gonna win.
I’m not of fan of his, but I’m smart enough not to bet against him.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
Something like what the Broncos did last night starts with effort and not giving up. I agree the Defense won this game (remember how Buc Ball used to be?), and Tebow was there when it counted. Whats is really sad is compare that with the absolutely lazy, sorry performance our Buccaneers have done against SF, Chicago and Houston. It is jaw dropping. I wouldnt even classify what the current players on our Buccaneers have done as being anywhere associated with the NFL. I am ashamed to call them Bucs. To clearly give up on plays that early in games and not even give 50% much less 100% is just plain sorry. No matter what you say about Tebow, but this Seminole fan takes his hat off to him. I will tell him to get better at throwing the ball to his receivers, continue to lower pads and knock the snot out of LBs, and hopefully the players on our Buccaneer team will watch and learn what effort really looks like.
November 18th, 2011 at 1:59 pm
I’ll say it again..dink and dunk has to go. Olsen is making the players execute the offense. The players need to be running the offensive plan based on their strengths. Dink and dunk isn’t it.
Go vertical, stretch the field. It WILL pay off.
November 18th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
That’s because John Fox is a real head coach — not some wannabe from Hofstra.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
Funny, youys were ripping on Fox when he was losing…
November 18th, 2011 at 4:39 pm
That should have been “you guys”
Joe, what I get from your right up is that they need to unleash Freeman and let him play his game. More slants and tell him to run if he has to.
November 18th, 2011 at 7:51 pm
1st they said the spread couldn’t work in the SEC….errrrrr Wrong.
Then they said the spread couldn’t work in the NFL….errrrr , maybe wrong??
November 19th, 2011 at 5:59 am
What I see from the Broncos is creativity on offense. What a concept! All we seem to do is run the same plays (that don’t work) over and over. Does it surprise any of you that on 3rd and 8 we throw the ball 2 yards? I only get surprised when we don’t. Does it surprise any of you that we never run the ball after an unsuccessful run attempt? I mean NEVER. Don’t you think the other team might know the same thing. Does it surprise any of you Josh Johnson comes in and we run the same read option play? Is he not a QB? Could he not throw the ball at least once, just for the hell of it? Could we not try a double reverse, instead of that stupid end around to Benn which (if we are lucky) results in 3 yards? How about a flea flicker? Halfback pass? Slant and go. Hail Mary. Anything besides what we have been doing. Run the damn triple option! It is amazing to me that me, being admittedly very ignorant when it comes to football, can predict with about 90% certainty, each and every play we run. And surprise surprise, it doesn’t work.
