Loss Of Gerald McCoy Hurting Bucs

Last week when the Bucs lost to the Saints, it seemed when the Bucs needed a stop, the defense couldn’t get off the field.
That’s never a good thing, especially when the team lining up on the other side of the ball is the New Orleans Saints led by Drew Brees.
Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune believes he knows why. In a TBO Bucs podcast, Cummings explains why the loss of Gerald McCoy has crippled the Bucs defense.
Cummings goes on to suggest GMC is the second-most valuable player on the Bucs defense, second only to Ronde Barber.

15 full games in 2 years, 30 total tackles. The bucs beat the Saints twice when he was out and got spanked twice when he played.
The bucs closed out last year 3-1 without him.
If he is the 2nd most valuable defensive player – that is why our defense sucks. 29th overall and 31st in sacks. All of the experts except sgw have concluded that this guy has been a huge disappointment when he is on the field.
The Saints game is s great example: he played 13 snaps, they were gashing us with the run during that time. Redskins game last year, he plays the first half and Torrain breaks a nfl record for rushing yards, he gets hurt second half and they play better.

I don’t get it. Where does the production meet the perception of this player? Sure he draws double team sometimes and he is atheletic for his size but he is soft and plays soft.

The bottom line is the vast majority of the teams sacks and almost every rushing attack that has been shut down this year is when mcCoy is in the middle.
When he has been out they have 2 sacks or something ridiculously low like that and have been gashed on the ground.
He has made a HUGE difference. I am not saying he is a pro-bowler and not saying he has not been part of a ground game running wild over him, but they are ALOT better with him.
He is still improving and the disruption he gets in the middle this year has been fantastic.
He will be here (injury issue aside) for a LONG time. He and Clayborn and Faoster are going to be the heart & soul of the middle

Arch, I don’t see how you can miss it. McCoy has been looking great (when healthy) since the 2nd half of last season. I agree he not nasty like Clay but he defiantly disruptive. He is either moving the pocket or penetrating it consistently. You don’t have to look too far back just watch the difference between him in the game at NoLa. and when he wasn’t.
However I do think this is the perfect system for fat Albert and if he can give the Bucs a good effort and attitude this could be a great no risk pick up.

Stanglassman: he missed half of the second half of last season what are you talking about, and 80% of this season. By comparison, everyone called Matt Stafford brittle and an injury-bust because he played in only 13 of his first 32 games. McCoy will have played in 16 (including 2 where he was injured in the first half so really 15) NFL games of his first 32.
McCoy is precisely as injury prone as Stafford who everyone was calling a bust last year. Further, Mccoy’s stats are terrible 4 career sacks and 30 tackles). McCoy at this point is a bust flat out who nobody can ever expect to stay healthy and productive.
Stop trying to spin history. Accept it: he was a bad pick, move on, and root for Price, Albert and Okam.

Well Thomas, Using your logic. That means McCoy will come back next year, Stay healthy for the year and Light it up… U know just like Stafford did?

And on Albert Haynesworth. This is the first time in 3 years I’ve seen him Genuinely happy. Look at his face and body language in his first few practices at redskins or patriots. He looks pissed off the entire time.
First day of practice with the Bucs …. ALL Smiles and getting along with his teammates.
I hope this works out for the best, cuz then we can have Okam, Price, Haynesworth and McCoy rotation.
Okam/Haynesworth stuffing the run and goal line.
Price/McCoy on passing downs.
Allowing all 4 to do what they do best. Plus this will allow Clayborn, Bennett, and Bowers to just run free on the outside.

Btw sheep- did you see Pat Yasinka’s all-nfc-south team at midseason: top defensive tackles:
1)brian price; and 2) corey peters.
Shockingly no mention of Softy. I am not sure if Price has been the best DT in the south this year, but I think that he is much better than mccoy – so does yasinkas.

PFF uses the best ranking system I’ve ever seen and is well worth paying for the premium stats package. They rank McCoy as the Bucs best DT with Okam a distant second. They don’t have the emotions that fans have and they don’t rank subjectively. Everything that goes into it is based on objective, quantifiable stats that are gained by watching every single play involving that player.
In fact, McCoy is the only Bucs DT with a plus ranking (+5.5). Everyone else has a negative ranking (from -1.7 to -13.3). Haynesworth, who was just signed, has a +0.5 ranking which is decent.
NFL teams pay for PFF stats. They don’t pay for journalists like Yasinskas or any of the guys on NFL Network or any other network. Those are all subjective opinions and are considered worthless by GM’s and coaches. Simple as that. And they certainly don’t give credence to stats posted by amateurs such as Thomas 2.2 or others.

Jeff Briscoe A long term bucs fan journalist and contributor for yahoo sports wrote a scathing article about mccoy yesterday look it up. He says critics have labeled mccoy as “soft.”
He called mccoy a “major disappointment” and “questions his future with the team” and further said “any comparisons to Warren Sapp or Suh seem laughable.”
He says even if he recovers from this injury, his development will be anything but quick. This is fact sheep, Beckles, Culpepper, King and others all agree.

Pff rankings are rejected bc they are NOT objective, they are purely subjective.

They are evaluated by non-football people based on watching TV replays and subjectively guessing as to whether a player fulfilled his responsibility on that play. Without knowing the play call, they are guessing on many instances.
They admit that there are many limitations on there unusual methods. BTW – mccoy’s stats were inflated based on his matchup vs the 3rd string guard from Indy where his sack and Indy tackles came from.

The Bucs know the play calls and they unanimously state that McCoy is their best DT and that the defensive line suffers greatly when he’s not in the game. Not just publicly, either, but team sources who are quoted by PR and others anonymously and privately also say the same exact thing. But I guess that’s all to be discounted, as well, since it doesn’t line up with your agenda.

The team drafted him #3 overall and signed him to a 50 million dollar contract. Their jobs are contingeng upon using picks and $ wisely.
The entire reason we have been on the team about mccoy is bc they are tryinv to spin facts about him to protect themselves and it is b.s. evaluator.
If you take his draft position and contract and in his productivity – he has been a MONUMENTAL bust so far. Period.

There’s no such thing as a “bust so far”. No such thing exists. There’s a general consensus that a bust can’t be called until 4 or 5 seasons have been played, or until the player has been cut and no other team is willing to sign him (JaMarcus Russell for example). Until then you’re just talking trash. McCoy has 2-3 seasons left to prove what he is or what he isn’t. We’ll see at that time, and not prior.

2.2- Im glad you consider the Yakmeister credible. Brian Price has been horrendous without McCoy next to him. He and Miller are the worst pair of DT’s in the league right about now. Its obvious to everyone you just spout off contrary opinions despite even you being able to see exactly what is happening on the field. Since McCoy went down there has been almost exactly zero QB pressures from DT’s this year. When Okam is in there the run defense is sometimes still halfway decent but without McCoy or Okam next to him carrying the load Brian Price as looked like exactly what he is- an overweight load, still only 60 percent healthy and in constant pain. But yeah he is a better DT than McCoy. Thats why the Bucs had to reach for Fat Albert in utter desperation. Because Brian Price is really taking care of business right now.
