Geno Hayes Returns Part-Time

November 10th, 2011

Raheem Morris said he was trying to light a fire under Geno Hayes with the fourth-year linebacker getting benched against New Orleans. However, Hayes won’t get to come out against Houston on Sunday like a yungry man possessed.

He’ll be a “part-time” linebacker on Sunday, per Morris’ words at his news conference yesterday. The starting lineup at LB won’t change, says Raheem, meaning Adam Hayward, Mason Foster and Quincy Black will get the call.

Joe’s not getting it. If the Bucs have hopes of reviving Hayes and the splash plays he can bring, then why not put the kid in the starting lineup and see if the wake-up call worked?

As Joe wrote Monday, it’s becoming glaringly clear these are Hayes’ last days in Tampa. Raheem has admitted he needs better play from his linebackers, and Foster (rookie) and Black (wealthy) aren’t going anywhere.

I don’t understand this at all. Hayes isn’t having a great year, but he’s been a lot better than Black. Why aren’t we benching Quincy instead? Or playing him ‘part time’?

  2. tj Says:

Has Raheem saw quincy black play?

  3. Dave Says:

Foster is the ONLY worthwhile LB.
Hayward and Watson are decent backups.

Not sure what they see in black at this point… and I was on board with him.

Time for a double dip into LBs in the draft

  4. Meh Says:

We need to double dip LB and CB, and we don’t even have a 4th round pick this year.

I agree with Dave. I like Watson and Hayward, but neither should be starting. They’re great depth players, and I wouldn’t want to lose them. I feel the same way about Biggers, Mack, and Jones in the secondary. Great depth. Not starting quality.

  5. KD Says:

Why in the world is Hayes rotating with Hayward when Black is the worst starting linebacker in the league? Grow a pair, man up and admit you were wrong about Black, and bench him. He’s killing us out there.

  6. David Says:

I think Watson is a starter if given the opportunity.

  7. Jrock Says:

@David, I’m with ya brother. Watson is quick on his blitzes and hits hard in the run game. Pass coverage is iffy, but he’s solid outside of that.

  8. Architek Says:

This is stupid to me. How come Raheem is yo-yoing with Hayes but yet letting Black play with no criticism or public accountability for his lackluster non-physical playing? They both suck but hell why punish one and not the other? The film don’t lie.

  9. Snook Says:

Raheem must be better friends with Quincy Black than Hayes. That’s usually how this clown makes football decisions.

  10. bucsman27 Says:

the three lbs should have been watson ruud and foster i dont care if he didnt hit hard at least he could tackle a damn running back black isnt worth anything

  11. aj Says:

The reason Geno is being called out and not Quincy, is that Geno is playing well below his talent level. I have no idea why he is playing so bad and hopefully this kick in the rear will get him going.

Geno has the talent to be a very good linebacker. He just doesn’t have the decision making. I really thought we would see him break through this year, but just the opposite has happened so far.

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dominik needs to draft two LB’s high next year just as he did with the DE’s and DT’s the last two drafts. That is the weakest position group on the team…by far. And we need a replacement for K2 because he’s lost a step or two.

You know the main reason I hope Haynesworth succeeds? So that Dominik will not hesitate to add 2-3 key free agents next year. This team needs help faster than the draft can provide.

and if Eric Berry hits the wire, grab him.

    April Fools.

  14. srqrr Says:

didnt the bucs win when Q was not playing

  15. srqrr Says:

LB’s in the draft – somebody from LSU or Alabama & Sean Spence from Miami, this guy covers the field and though small in stature, he hits (remember D. Brooks was undersized & liked contact)

  16. Genocided Says:

First two picks in the 2012 NFL draft. LB, LB. …or LB, CB/S. Later Hayes and Black.

  17. RichinNC Says:

So is Quincy officially the new Clayton yet?

“Raheem must be better friends with Quincy Black than Hayes. That’s usually how this clown makes football decisions.”

Ignorant statement. If you really think that is true, than you are a complete moron.

  19. gotbbucs Says:

quincy black just might be the least instinctive football player i’ve ever seen. next year he should be one of the highest payed special teams players in the league.

I’ll give you a little analogy: I have a video business, which means I have to buy many cameras. If I buy a very expensive camera and find out it may not be as good as I thought, I am going to try my damnedest to make it work. I am not going to just stop using it. Otherwise I am just throwing away all that money. On the other hand, if I have a much cheaper camera that is not as good as I thought, I would have much less of a problem putting it away and not using it, even if it is a little better than the more expensive camera. Obviously I probably shouldn’t have bought the more expensive camera, but I already did. Quincy Black is the expensive camera.

It’s easy for all of us to forget that this is a business, but ultimately it is. Every single owner in the NFL has the primary objective of making money, even though they each have different philosophies on how to make it. So this is not just a cheap-arse Glazer thing. It’s getting very difficult to argue that the Black signing was a good decision, but I feel very confident that they will correct the mistake as quick as they can. Every organization makes mistakes (look no further than Haynesworth and Ochocinco in NE, and virtually every move made by Philly). But to think that the amount of money he makes is irrelevant in football decisions is very naive. You may think it is wrong, but it happens everywhere.

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

HawaiianBuc- nice analogy. But one problem. we didn’t just “acquire” Quincy.

It would be more like you rented a camera for a couple years. You realize it sucks. Everyone who sees video from the camera reviews it, and tells you it’s terrible, and hurting your business. Even casual hobbyist( like me), post that you need a new camera.

Then the guy you rented the camera from calls you.he offers to sell you the crappy camera, but he wants twice as much for the horrible Camera, as many great cameras cost. In a moment of madness, your co- owner buys the camera- fully aware that it sucks and is useless. He then tells you, that you have to make top quality videos with that useless piece of Sh*t.

Ladies and gentlemen- I give you Quincy Black.

  22. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Capt. Tim,

Yeah, hard to argue with you on that one. I guess they really thought there was something there that no one had seen yet. There are occasions where it could work out and the player could develop into a great player, but I just don’t see that happening with Quincy Black either. Like you, I truly hope I’m wrong, but I feel pretty confident I’m not. I can’t really defend the FO on that one, they seem to have made a mistake. I am confident, however, that they will correct it quickly.

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

HawaiianBuc- I think next draft will be CB-LB-LB CB.
That should fix our worst issues.
Do you think Dom’s” build thru the Draft only” plan is working?

  24. Meh Says:

    We don’t have a 4th round pick.

  25. mikeck Says:

I cant believe we couldnt come up with money for Caddy but found away to make Quincy Black rich..

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Capt. Tim,

I think it is working to a point, but there will come a time where we will news to add some free agents too. It is impossible to hit on every pick. This team has a glaring need for speed on offense, which could be met with free agency IMO. That being said, I think we all have to remember that we are losing to excellent teams, teams with much more experience. Our players should improve greatly with time, it’s just a matter of how much they will improve and how patient we can be.
