“You Need To Give The Money Back”

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) didn’t hold back his disgust with the Buccaneers this morning on the WDAE-AM 620 airwaves.
In no particular order:
*Beckles went off on the Bucs running a “counter” play on 4th-and-1 in the first quarter, in disbelief that the Bucs are inept in short yardage.
*Quincy Black is a “terrible football player,” Beckles said, calling Black worse than former Beckles punching bag Barrett Ruud. Black is worse, per Beckles, because “Ruud tackled.” Beckles implored Black to void his $11 million guaranteed contract he scored in the offseason. “You need to give the money back. You suck.”
*Beckles blasted the Bucs heirarchy saying, “We’re just saving money. That’s all we’re doing.”
*The Bucs don’t fly to the ball at all, evident on Saints successful screens.
*Beckles struggled to define yungry. “200 yards [allowed on the ground. That’s not yungry,” Beckles said. “Punching someone in the face on a dead ball. I guess that’s yungry.”
*LeGarrette Blount running out of bounds to finish a long run with a defensive back to beat left Beckles in disbelief.
*As usual, Beckles was flummoxed figuring out why the Bucs don’t run more.

Dominick wanted to reward the young players on the team so Black got paid, and no free agents were contacted. At least Beckles blamed the hierarchy Glazer Trio. I kept waiting yesterday for the Bucs to give me a reason to go buy a ticket to the Houston game on Sunday. I’m still waiting…

I’m so disgusted with the play calling that I’ve considered canceling my already paid for Sunday ticket & not renewing next year if this guy is still calling the plays. I’m at my end & I’m a die hard Bucs fan born & resident of New Jersey, with Jets & Giants right down the highway. This guy is out of his league on most Sundays. With the young talent we have on offense, we should in no way struggle the way we do. With that being said, we needed one new corner, bigger then Mack & Biggers & a receiver that could stretch the field. No one’s afraid of us going deep. How can we compete without a burner somewhere on this roster. Someone who can hit a hole & it be an afterthought. Like Barber said, this squad right now is just average. We’re going nowhere fast with this guy calling plays for us. It’s downright embarrassing to be a fan. Bring on the brown bags!

Any LB not named Foster needs to be replaced. Watson is probably another exeption.
After watching Foster hit Ivory in the hole, I’m sold on the kid. Black and Hayes are afraid to hit. At least Ruud was willing.

Joe, surely you have an article right after Raheem was hired when he mentioned what type of offense Jags and he were going to implement..?
Referencing direct quotes would be fantastic – I know ‘vertical’ passing was a staple. What a joke.

Ian Beckles is a refreshing change from a lot of Homers, and is saying what he feels needs to be said.
WHY neither Ian Beckles or Shaun King OR Joe has never commented on the Bucs changing BOTH O and D Line Coaches from a former 10 and 6 team is beyond me ?
Arguably, Tampa has more talent this year then we had last year, but we are losing, not winning.
I might make the argument that Maybe we messed up hiring these new coaches ?
We have NO Pass Rush, and Jordan, the defensive end we COULD have taken had a sack for the Saints.

@BucfanJeff — The Jags era talking points were very simple: downhill running and playaction/verical game. It all changed when Olson came in with Chucky’s playbook and had to craft stuff on the fly a couple of weeks before the season.

@admin – There in lies the problem Joe – Olsen’s still using pages out of the Chucky (never worked for sh*t) playbook. We need to get rid of EVERYTHING that Gruden touched and start fresh. It didn’t work then, it sure as h*ll ain’t working now.

Completely agree with Beckles in regard to his statements about Black.

D-Line:
McCoy, Price, Clayborne, Bowers, Bennett – Keepers
Okam – questionable
Miller – not very good
LB:
Foster – going to be REAL GOOD
Hayes, Black – on their way out of Tampa
Watson – A keeper
Hayward – decent backup
DBs:
They need a CB. I think Gaitor may develop into a very good one, but that is 2 years down the road
Bottom line is this is year 2.5 of a rebuilding process and they have shown some great signs. Player evaluation is still going on. They lack some speed weapons on offense and they lack LBs on defense.
With the NFC having ALOT of inconsistent teams, the Bucs could still make the playoffs, but they are another year or two away from being a high level team.
I see Clayborn and Bowers and McCoy and Price being dominant in 2 years. Along with Foster and 2 other LBs.
I see the offense having Williams and Benn and ANOTHER WR emerge as the speed threat along with a speed RB to give Blount rest.
I also see Olsen’s offense progressing to what they said it would be: run game while opening up the passing game more and more.
( Just trying to throw in some optimism at the end here because that was not pretty)

I wish they would fire Olsen and just promote Alex Van Pelt. They did the same thing to Jagodzinksi back in 09. Why not now?

Freeman is playing like someone has his ear. Someone is coaching the talent out of him and discouraging him from scrambling. I think I know who that might be.

Sadly, benching Blount was the right call for the long term, though I was horrified to see Lumpkin out there at the time.

Hey Beckles,
I’ve rooted for the Bucs since the mid-80’s, ’cause I lived in Tampa and it’s way more fun than rooting against the home team.
Buuuuut, if you wanna get real about who needs “to give the money back” — well, every Buccaneer player from 1983 to 1994 should give back _every_ dollar they earned, plus dedicate the rest of their time on this earth to finding each Buc fan who attended games and personally thanking them for putting up with that crap.
And yes, I’m aware that encompasses the better part of your football career.

Joke…I agree. Nothing pisses me off more than listening to Dan ‘bench sitter’ Sileo and Ian ‘I always sucked’ Beckles critique the Bucs. I don’t care if they’re right or not, they forget about how pitiful they played and why they ended up as bitter sports commentators along with Shaun King. King had the nerve to say Freeman sucks! My God, is that the pot calling the kettle black or what??? Now, having said that, I agree with Dave. I’ve said all along it was going to be a roller coaster ride with this team until they mature but yesterday was hard to watch. Tackling should not be that difficult when you are a paid professional. We just got mauled on defense. If our D steps up and plays like last meeting with the Saints, we win that game.

The Culverhouse estate should also reimburse everyone for having to sit on those aluminum benches. Especially in 80’s shorts. I guess we’ve had it worse.

What the hell makes you all think that Olson is using Grudens plays? Didn’t Olson only spend like a year with Gruden? If anything he’s using Linehan’s plays from St. Louis. The play on 4th with the pulling guard was a HORRIBLE play call, you don’t pull a damn guard on 4th and short, slow developing plays like that on 4th down are a no-no. My grandmother knows that.

Atleast Olsen wouldn’t be the play caller anymore. Why not give Van Pelt a chance? If he isnt the right guy for the job by the end of the season then they can re-evaluate a different OC in the offseason…Just a suggestion

Agree Olson isn’t getting the job done. Black should give back his signing bonus. Those are two points I do agree with. I wasn’t watching football for Sileo and Beckles careers but I do think that Shaun King is frankly just jealous of Josh Freeman. Freeman probably would progress under a real OC but with Olson this is what we can expect to see. Dude never ranked higher than 20th in the league in total offense as coordinator what makes you think he would start here?
