Cody Grimm Out For The Year

September 27th, 2011

For the second time in his short two seasons in the NFL, Bucs safety Cody Grimm was placed on the injured reserve list by the Bucs, effectively ending his 2011 season.

Grimm suffered a right knee injury in the third quarter of the Bucs win over the Dixie Chicks and, thus, his season is over, so reports Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times.

The Bucs placed Grimm on injured reserve Tuesday with a right knee injury he sustained in the third quarter of Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Grimm was injured making a tackle of Falcons running back Michael Turner. It appeared that Grimm’s right knee may have struck the helmet of linebacker Geno Hayes, who suffered a concussion on the play.

This is sad for Grimm. Not just for the obvious reasons but one has to wonder about his future in the NFL. In less than a year he’s had a broken left leg and now a blown right knee.

And no, the NFL has not released any update on Tanard Jackson’s application for reinstatement, provided he has applied for reinstatement.

Terrible news. Grimm has really become a good young player for this team! Hope he returns to full strength by next year.

Joe, I don’t care what you or anyone else says, we need Tanard Jackson to be reinstated. We have a tough schedule ahead and we need our playmaking stud safety back there making plays for our D. With or without rust, he’s much better than Asante or Lynch.

    That’s just asinine.

If the guy can’t play — assuming he is ever reinstated — then why the hell do you even want him on the field?

Oh, he’s a name you recognize, got it.

  3. KD Says:

Next man up…it’s worked for us so far. One of these young safeties better be ready to rise to the occasion.

  4. Patrick Says:

No Joe, it’s the fact that he’s a good player. Not the most credible source, but one of the posters on here yesterday said that they know Tanard and that he’s been working and getting ready for the season. I can’t see why he wouldn’t.

  5. chrisfwc :) Says:

Heal-up Grimm and Hayes! Loved havin’ the “wolf in the box.” Who’s the next wolf?

Caller to Rah yesterday “Our D is young and playin’ nasty. They Yasty!”

  6. Joe Says:

    Patrick:

Of course Jackson is a good player, but if he’s not worthy of getting on the field, “rust” as you say, then he shouldn’t be on the field.

If Jackson meets his requirements to get back in the league, Joe is all for him playing when he’s ready to play, not one moment before.

This is a guy who hasn’t been on a football field sans one Josh Freeman workout, in a year. Jackson wasn’t that elite of a player that he can just strap on shoes and lock down Tony Gonzalez.

  7. DCBUCSFAN Says:

Say what you want about Tenard Jackson, but one thing for sure, he can play ball. He was the Bucs version of Sean Taylor. He would make a receiver exercise extreme caution in our secondary. Ask Dallas Clark!

  8. Patrick Says:

LOL I remember that hit on Clark! Too bad he won’t be back to do it again to him on Monday night! haha

  9. SteveK Says:

I wonder if Goodell is going to fine Hayes for a low blow on Grimm?

Too bad for Grim, I hope he can come back, he has heart and I love his competitive nature.

What are the chances that Devin Holland gets a look? Dude is big and can fly.

  10. d clark Says:

Sucks about grimm. He’s a solid player not technically a game changer tho let’s be real with ourselves here. But we can either get tanard back who is a game changer. Lets see what Lynch can do (who I think has played solid since hes been in.) or Asante (who I believe is built in that tanard mold without the ball skills.) Joe, any word on how Black is doing on the practice squad? I know he’s probably not ready yet, but I thought I heard somewhere that he has returned from that nasty ankle injury?

  11. SRQBucFan Says:

I can understand why a lot of people are high on Tarnard Jackson’s return(pun intended) He is a play maker and has be since he came into the NFL. As long as he is in shape. The rust will be pretty easy to work off. Remember he has already been in the league for 3 years. I am sure like any of you, doing a job for 3 years even if u leave for a year then return. You should have no problem getting it back down with in a couple weeks.I predict right after the bye week if not right before the bye week.

BUT, I really don’t think we should just throw him on the field. The BIG ISSUE isn’t his playing ability. It was his action off the field. I for one don’t believe he should be rewarded with a starting spot the moment he steps through the door. Even if he came in beast mode. That wont give him the full lesson that needs to be learned here. The man needs to EARN his spot on the roster again. He shouldn’t be praised until he has proven him self to have cleaned up his act. Most importantly to his team but also us as the fans. Do to the weird lock-out we had. I also would bet he has a play book and got a crash course into the 2010 Defense scheme’s. So he can at least semi keep up and practice at home. Him showing up to a player organized camp with Freeman and Co. Proves the guy wants to be back and be apart of this team.

I know the Raheem/Dominik trend well enough already to know… NO ONE, I mean no one will know anything about Tarnard till he is either resigned to the team or let go, neither would the NFL. When it comes to player business, everyone is very hush hush. As to not allow an advantage for teams and agents to make side deals. Normally it’s the players them selves and the media who opens their mouths about private matters.

Until all that is settled. I really like Lynch but he is more like a torpedo then an actual tackling machine. But he plays with such intensity. He’s like always 2 inches away from the ball when being punted and kicked off. Still a special team ace. Personally tho, i really really want to see what Asante has to offer. The few times he’s been on the field. The man has put in production. Always around the ball, always in on tackles, Hard hitter, and also looked really good as a pass rusher. I think like Grimm last year. Asante is going to get thrusted into the starting spot and SHINE.

Side note* still waiting to see something special from Amhad Black. He was something special in college.

Holy god my posts are always so much bigger, Then i thought they would be. Sorry fellow fans.

  13. Garv Says:

WHY hasn’t there been any movement, one way or the other, on the Jackson “situation?” We know there has been nothing but DEAD SILENCE from the league and the Bucs abut it………but why? As far as I know the suspension is over….
unless Lord Goodell of London decrees otherwise of course your honor SIR!

  14. BamBamBuc Says:

If Jackson were reinstated this week, I’m guessing the Bucs would ask the league for a roster exemption for him to last 2 weeks. This actually fits what we need perfectly. In the meantime, we play the guys we have against the Colts and 49ers and work on getting Jackson in shape and up to speed. After those two games, we activate him to the roster in time for the Saints game if he is ready to go.

  15. gotbbucs Says:

BamBam, your thought kind of goes along with my question. When reinstated, does Jackson automatically count against the 53 man or does the team get some amount of time to decide what to do with him? Anybody know?

Per the NFL/NFLPA, this is a confidential situation. The only way information will get out on the status of this — for example, if TJax has applied for reinstatement — would have to come from TJax or his agent, both of which have been silent.

Also, people are under the assumption that Dominik wants the guy back in the first place.

  17. Garv Says:

    Joe

Why on earth would Tannard NOT apply for reinstatement? The only reason I can think of is not good, not good at all.

You’re right about Dominik and the Bucs of course but again, the only reason I can think of for not wanting him back now is not good.

I HAVE to assume……….err…….HOPE that Tannard is clean and sober these days. If not we’ll never see him playing again and rightfully so.

  18. Joe Says:

You answered your own question. There are very specific parameters laid down by the NFL a player has to meet before the reinstatement process can occur.

  19. Patrick Says:

I’m sure people will be asking Raheem about Jackson pretty soon in the press conferences

Already happened and he said it’s out of his hands.

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I hate losing Grimm, but when I saw the play happen, I pretty much knew he was done. Hopefully this is the last of his major injuries.

  22. Captain Stagger Says:

Just think if everyone got a one year suspension from thier job for smoking dope……

You answered your own question. There are very specific parameters laid down by the NFL a player has to meet before the reinstatement process can occur.

I have to ask…have you heard something that tells you Jackson did something wrong during his time off, or are you simply passing judgement?

I can understand the bitterness…a year ago I said that the Bucs needed to hold onto him, but they also needed to find a replacement. Grimm was that replacement.

Now I’m saying this…the Bucs need to move on from Grimm.

No, they should not release him…there is still a chance he can come back and be good…but they should start a contingency plan. It’s very possible he could go the way of Parris Warren or Caddy…and never get back to where he is now or a higher level.

He’s out for the year (again). Do we wait a year to see if “maybe” he comeback and plays well? Yes, I suppose we do, but we also need to work on replacing him. If we find a better player, that’s great. At worse it will give us competition at the spot for next year and we’ll have great depth.

Meanwhile, in regard to Jackson, I can see the justification in being mad and assuming he could not keep his nose (or lungs) clean during his suspension. He did, afterall, put the weed before the team on multiple occasions.

But until we know for certain we need to hope for the best. We need him or another player of equal or better calibur. I’m not saying he should be the permanant choice. That’s something he should have to earn 5 times over…but if he’s clean, we need him. At worse, it would buy us time to find someone else.

The only way he would not be in football shape is if he let himself go. I read months ago he was working hard privately, and that it showed when he attended the camp Freeman held.

If he did let himself go the chances that he did not keep his nose clean go up.

But either way, the Bucs need to know immediately. I think the likely scenario is Dominick probably called Tanard, talked with him, asked if he stayed clean (which, of course, Tanard would say he did either way), and then said something like “Tanard, I have to tell you…you are lucky to even get this chance. If you pass the physical and did all you needed to do and get reinstated, this is it. Keep your nose clean and play well.”

And then the next call Dominick likely made was to Goodell, requesting a quick decision so he knows what his situation is. It’s not asking a lot. The Bucs didn’t break the rules, Jackson did. Goodell is likely going to make a decision very soon.

If it’s a reinstate, the Bucs have time. The spot is filled and they can work hard to get Tanard ready.

If it’s a continued suspension, then at least the Bucs know they need to move on. There are safeties out there to choose from. The question is whether Dominick is willing to risk finding a permanant replacement for Grimm.

Maybe Lynch can be that guy. I think some have assumened he will not be because the chances of finding two safeties that are good with the same last name are slim. But it can happen.

My prediction if Tanard is reinstated is that Lynch will be the starter for 2-3 games, and if he does well, he’ll keep it. If he doesn’t, Tanard will be made starter again.

If Tanard is not reinstated, the Bucs will have to sign someone…or promote a DB to the position.

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

Move on from Grimm??? Damn, some of you are clueless!! We should have moved on from Hayes!Hes not any good, and wrecked the knee of a player twice as good as he is. If they’d have sat his ass on the bench next to Quincy Jane- like I suggested!!- Grimm would still be crushing running backs for us. Adam Haywood tackles the OTHER teams players, he doesn’t injury ours.

And for those of you even futher from Reality. Tanard is probably still toking it, with no plans to return! He got a couple big checks It’s GONJA TIME

He was gonna get re- instated, but instead he got high! Gonna be an NFL player, but instead he got high! Was gonna go to ALL Freeman’s practices, but instead he got high. Was gonna pass all 4 drug test, but instead he got high. Instead he got high, instead he got high, instead he got high!

They should have a way to put lil musical notes over that!! Well, one thing for sure- he’s not as high as those of you thinking he was a great safety, and not NEARLY as high as those of you he think we can depend on this guy!

  25. Diary of a Wimpy Ruud Says:

Out for his career , if you ask me.

At this point you have to start looking for his replacement. He was never that great to begin with , and now he’s unreliable damaged goods to boot.

  26. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Capt. Tim
    Read my post again.

I said we move on, but keep him on the roster in case he does make a comeback. We cannot put off the season, can we?

Blaming Hayes for this is wrong. So it was his helmet that hit Grimm’s knee…it could have been anyones. It was an accident and they ahppen.

Whining about it does not address the problem. We need to move on and take care of the position, especially with the defense developing faster than expected.

  27. macabee Says:

Pete, I think safety is our least worry at this point. We have Lynch and Asante in the box, and Devin Holland is going to be an outstanding SS in time. Sean Jones, while not playing great is holding his own. Ahmad Black is starting to turn heads in practice and sitting somewhere out there is Dominique Harris who played well in preseason and could still be a candidate for the PS. Then there’s Tanard. I don’t think we should be anxious about his return. If he returns and returns to form, it will be a added plus, but is not in the critical path. Donald Penn says he talks to him every week and says he’s coming back. While the Bucs are not saying anything, you can probably judge from how long they hold the roster spot open before naming a replacement for Grimm. If they do right away, it’s not a good sign!

  28. Dave Says:

WOW. I am all for TJax being re-instated and trying to get in game shape, but you guys are nuts if you think he will step in and play at ANY POINT before November.

Also, many of you seem to be remembering John LYnch and not TJax. TJax was very good, but he was not a pro-bowler… yet… and was not scaring WRs and TEs… yet. He was a young player on his way who actually had declining coverage numbers (maybe because he had munchies).

Anyway, personally, the way Grimm has played outside of a couple games last year when he was big against the run, I think Lynch will be the better the safety at this point. He is better in coverage and a ballhawk, exactly what they need right now because in my opinion, the D-Line and LBs are playing well against the run and getting better. They really have had one big reverse against Detroit and one half against the world’s best RB where they played poorly against the run. I think they need the better cover buy in there at this point.

Especially with their next 5 games being: Indy, SF (with an injured Gore), CHI (pass happy offense), and NO twice.

  29. Capt.Tim Says:

Dave- really like your post, and only disagree about Grimm, who was playing at a really high level!

IF Tanard reapplies, shows up and works hard to get in shape, I have no issues with him being on the team. But he’s gotta love himself.

The main issue I have, is that he probably wouldn’t start on this team anyway! He stood out a little on our 3-13 team- who wouldn’t? That unit was Talentless, top to bottom! Our team is much more talented now. Lynch and Asante are both good safeties. And there are better ssfties available than Tanard.

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

    Sorry” gotta PROVE himself”

  31. lowlife Says:

Currently, he’s not even a part of the team. Why worry about it?

I want the better of Lynch/Asante to see the field… more often that is, since they’ll probably rotate.
