No Practice Thursday For Quincy Black

September 22nd, 2011

The likelihood of Quincy Black sitting out the Bucs-Falcons game Sunday has increased. Yes, Joe knows legions of Bucs fans like the sound of that.

Good guy Joe Smith, of The St. Pete Times, says Black is still nursing his injured ankle.

Bucs starting strongside linebacker Quincy Black did not practice again Thursday, making his status for Sunday’s game all the more doubtful.

Raheem Morris made it clear yesterday during his news conference that he wasn’t about to abandon Quincy Black after a couple of bad games. But, of course, that doesn’t mean the Bucs won’t let Black take time to recover fully.

Based on Black’s play over his career, Joe would prefer Black get healthy before returning. The mere thought of Black playing at anything less than 100 percent is enough drive to Joe to shots of Southern Comfort.

good Dekoda watson should be starting anyway

  2. Paul W. Says:

Hopefully Dekoda has a great game and never relinquishes the starting role. Every time I see Watson play I like him more and more out there.

  3. Nick2 Says:

John Lynch called Dekota Watson the Bucs best defensive performer during the preseason but because we mistakenly gave Black a huge chunk of cash he will keep his job until the higher up realize we can’t stop the run until he is out of the starting lineup??? Watson has earned this shot the guy has played great and its no coincidence that once Black went down our run stops got much better. Also Watson is one heck of a blitzer.

  4. jvato24 Says:

With all the 1 year contracts signed by vets we sign QB to some big guaranteed contract ??? WTF ??? Black if you look at the stats has also been oft injured for quite a few games each year.

I just dont get it … Plus there was no drop off from Black last year when he was out. Hayward is better than Black too.

  5. Vince Says:

Looking forward to seeing what Watson can do with this opportunity.

  6. Meh Says:

I’m close to thinking we should cut him before most of that contract comes due. I suppose let him heal up and give him another shot, but he’s been terrible since he got his fat payday.

  7. Chris FWC Says:

Ewww Joe! SOCO?? Too sweet and makes my belly hurt…JUST like this LB.

“wasn’t about to abandon Quincy Black after a couple of bad games.”

Ummm…when are we gunna see a couple of GOOD games from Black? Ian was wrong about letting go Ruud. Black should of been the one cut loose. I said that when he was promoted to starter. He’s not starter material. Never has been. Jane is Jane.

  8. tony2cents Says:

Can’t wait to see Watson for a full 60. Hopefully some time off gives Black some time to get it together physically & mentally. Because with his contract, he’ll be sticking around for a while.

  9. FLBoyInDallas Says:

With Watson starting in place of Black, with Blount being used as much as he should, and with Freeman quickly progressing past Williams and looking to his second, third & fourth options in the passing game, I’m starting to think a win against Atlanta is a realistic possibility. Nothing but good news so far this week.

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

I agree with every post here- you guys know your Football! Black keeps getting chances based on his “Potential”. Sadly, his production has never, ever come close to his potential!! He’s just terrible.

Chris FWC- absolutely- we coulda kept Ruud one more year, and Let Foster learn the Job at The strong side LBer- then he didn’t need to worry about calling the defensive plays- just squashing RBs! Then moved Him to MLB next year, and drafted another sam in next years LBer heavy draft. You are spot on Chris!

Watson and Haywood are both better than Black. I believe resigning him for any amount rates right up there with the Clayton and Ward contracts! I can see why Dominick hates FAs- who sucks at judging Vetern talent! He’s a draft Genius!, but can’t tell the bad apples from the good wher it comes to veterans.

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

Joe- lol! Thinking about Black playing at all is enought to have you chasing Southern Comfort with Tequila! Brrrr

  12. Oahubuc Says:

    Great news! Bring on Watson.

  13. Jrock Says:

Here we go Watson, go make a splash baby

  14. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Hell, I’d bet there’s a decent chance Zach Diles is as good or better than Black right now. That’s pretty sad.

  15. Ian_620WDAE Says:

I know Raheem has Black as his nickel MLB but eventually Foster was going to become the every down MLB so why was Black given such a big contract to be a SLB?

The SLB in this defense has always been a plug and play position so unless Black was going to move over to WLB, giving him such a big contract does not make sense

  16. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Ian,

I firmly believe that paying Black had a ton to do with giving the org a reason/excuse for not retaining Ruud. You cannot tell me that Quincy “Jane” Black outperformed Ruud for the last 2 seasons. I am not saying that Ruud will be better than Foster long term, signs are good with Foster.

But the Jane Black contract, which really isn’t as large as advertised because the Bucs can walk away in the first two years for about 11 million per reports, was mostly to do about the public outcry if the team would have let both Ruud and black leave ( this would have shown how cheap the org has become).

The upside: Watson is a much better player than Jane as far as I can tell on a small sampling. I believe the defense is now improved.

As for Foster, kid has potential but he will make some glaring mistakes but not for lack of effort.

First, You do realize Dominik joined the Buccaneers’ staff in June 1995 as a pro personnel assistant. He served in that capacity through the 1997 season, before assuming the title of pro scout in 1998 and coordinator of pro personnel in 2000. Prior to the start of the 2001 season, Dominik began the first of his eight years as Tampa Bay’s Director of Pro Personnel. That’s along time to hold a position that, as you put, “sucks at”? Now second, you do know what pro personnel is, right?
That being said, I think Dominik as GM is contract shy of FAs, because he did get reamed on several of his first ones like Clayton, Ward, Leftwich, the Kicker fiasco(cant remeber thier names), and even Win-slow got the highest salary for TEs(personally, he’s good but he ain’t that good). He did bring us some great FAs in the past Simeon, B Johnson, Keyshawn, Jervicious, etc.
So, I diasagree that he “sucks” at evaluating FAs. Maybe, Raheem had more say in those crap FA siginings than we think?

  18. OAR Says:

BTW I do agree, the Black signing ranks right up there with his first ones! Phew!

  19. McBuc Says:

OAR, have to disagree a little. Ward weas the top running back availible, who knew he was going to suck so bad. Than again, the entire team sucked in 2009. Clayton had a chance to prove he was a product of gruden’s doghouse, turns out he was not. The one I disgaree the most on is Winslow, he is well worth the price he brought in. Inagine if Winslow was not here, Williams would be more of a marked man than he already is. I put Winslow right up there with the top TEs in the league.

  20. McBuc Says:

Oh, and on the Dom take I totally agree with his carreer path and being fine at pro evals..

  21. OAR Says:

    McBuc
I don’t disagree with Win-slow being in with the top TEs. But, he should not get paid the HIGHEST salary, out of said top TEs, unless he is at the very top, which he is not. Oh well, just me being picky with someone else’s money, I guess.

  22. OAR Says:

Btw my point was just that he has very good eye for FA talent, but was just let down (reamed) by his initial sigings and is now shy of any other big FA contract signings.

  23. McBuc Says:

As long as he is a Buc, I am fine with whatever they want to pay him. I just want to see winning football, and I would love to see a game that did not make my heart pond!

  24. Chris FWC Says:

If you want to talk overpaid look not further than our C.

  25. McBuc Says:

OAR, I got your point, and agree 100%.

  26. Piratic Says:

    Perfect.

Since last season I’ve been telling anyone who would listen about the play of #56.

I believe him to be our next true playmaker.

Now that he’s making his first start, it’s going to make it EXTRA difficult to get him off the field after #58 returns to health, especially since it has now been reported that #59 will have the green dot.

I believe that his play will be all the justification he needs to remain the starter.

I LOVE it that he gets his chance early in the season, so that he can grow together with this absurdly young defense.

#56 plays like a predatory cat. Watch him, you’ll see what I mean.

    I’m stoked!! Go Bucs!!!

  27. OAR Says:

    McBuc
LOL! Yes, our cardiac kids can sure make it pound! Well that, and make your finger nails disappear!

    Chris
Very true. I had forgotten about him, but I think he was an Allen signing.
