Bucs Cuts Made

September 3rd, 2011

It is official. The Bucs made their final cuts to get to the league-ordered 53-man roster.

There aren’t any real shocks here but a few surprises that made Joe raise an eyebrow.

Per Buccaneers.com, here are the victims: The highest-profile may be fifth round draft pick Ahmad Black.

RB Armando Allen
C Matt Allen
T Will Barker
S Ahmad Black
T Cory Brandon
QB Rudy Carpenter
G Thomas Claiborne
QB Jonathan Crompton
G Marc Dile (injury settlement)
WR Ed Gant
TE Daniel Hardy
S Dominique Harris
LB Brandon Heath
LB Simoni Lawrence
RB Mossis Madu
DE Alex Magee
LB Tyrone McKenzie
DE Kyle Moore
TE Nathan Overbay
WR Maurice Price (injury settlement)
TE Ryan Purvis
LB/FB Nick Reveiz
K Jacob Rogers
LB Derrell Smith
DT Al Woods

Purvis getting sliced is a bit of surprise and something tells Joe that Hardy may be a practice squad target.

Gant is a slight surprise only that Joe thought he did a fine job when called up. Joe was certain Preston Parker was on thin ice.

They cut three tight ends? That just leaves two. Something else is going on here.

  2. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I thought Gant had made it impossible for the coaches to cut him….hopefully they can sneak him through to the practice squad.

  3. Morgan Says:

Does that leave us 2 TEs (with an additional one playing FB)?

  4. Brandon Says:

Would like to have seen Simoni Lawrence and Ed Gant on the squad. Am definitely surprised Preston Parker made it. Lawrence should be a definite practice squad signee. He’s only 22 as he left college last season as a true junior.

There are many very attractive cuts made league-wide that the Bucs could steal onto the practice squad via extra cash bonus a la Briscoe.

    LB Mario Harvey
    S Mana Silva
    OT/OG Steve Schilling
    TE Fendi Okunbun
    WR Demario Ballard
    WR Jeff Maehl
    QB Pat Devlin
    DE Philip Hunt
    LB Steven Friday
    RB Lonyae Miller
    WR Kris Adams
    LB Eric McBride
    RB Derrick Locke

  5. Macabee Says:

Mark “Houdini” Dominik is at work here. I’m just going to wait and see what comes out of the hat.

  6. Brandon Says:

That does leave 2 TEs. Stocker and Winslow and that’s it. I’m thinking they have a claim in on somebody that they want to bring in.

The Bucs identified TE as an offseason priority by interviewing all TE prospects at the Senior Bowl no matter how marginal… and then drafted 2… I’m surprised they only have 2, but Lorig can play TE as well but I’m thinking they make a move in the next 24 hours to bring in another TE.

  7. jEsTer Says:

PLEASE Dominik go get Chester Taylor, make up for letting Caddy leave!!!

  8. MichiganBucsFan Says:

Vikings cut Stylez White, guess the Bucs knew what they were doing

  9. gotbbucs Says:

please go get chester taylor? was that a joke. is this 2011 or 2008, the last time chester taylor was relevant?

  10. btown bucs fan Says:

im surprised allen bradford made the cut

  11. MichiganBucsFan Says:

Jeremiah Johnson is a RB I’d like to see them give a look to tho

  12. btown bucs fan Says:

new england released two time pro bowler safty brandon meriweather young player with experience would he be a good fit or upgrade over sean jones?

  13. btown bucs fan Says:

    safety*

  14. Patrick Says:

The Bucs need to go after Lance Briggs from the Bears. He’d definitely be a boost to our LB corps. Only problem is that I don’t think we can trade anyone for him.

  15. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Tampa messed up keeping Parker and not Gant IMHO.
I was surprised Tampa drafted Black anyway, since Julio Jones had his lunch so often in college.

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

They’re going light at two positions with only 2 TE’s and 5 LB’s. That means they’re either in the midst of signing other guys or they’re going heavy at other positions. My guess is they’re gonna stay heavy at DE and S where they are right now.

  17. jEsTer Says:

After a look at his numbers.yep it was joke!!!

  18. Brad Says:

I would have kept Madu. Keeping Lumpkin was a mistake. Why do these guys play a 4th preseason game? Gant impressed and so did Madu. I think Madu might have made up for Dominic’s mistake of letting Caddy go. Lumpkin is a bust..

  19. JBAY35 Says:

I really liked how Madu was hittin the hole. Hopefully they can get him on the practice squad cuz we need a change of pace back.

  20. ty Says:

they should have kept madu and gant cut bradford and lumpkin

  21. ty Says:

or if they wanted three running backs kept madu and allen cut parker and kept gant

  22. Four Fingered Fisherman Says:

    @ Brad

I agree with you, except for going as far zs to call Lumpkin a bust. I do think he should’ve been cut though…and he still might be.

We do need to keep in mind “body of work” when it comes to some of these players.

I think Holland was the beneficiary of the new 46-man rule. And he deserves it I think. I still have lots of hope for Black, but I’m glad politics didn’t play a role here.

Surprised with Bradford, Parker over Gant and only keeping 2 TE’s. I wasn’t even against keeping both Parker and Gant, but Gant for sure earned a spot over some of these guys, including Bradford and Parker.

  23. Four Fingered Fisherman Says:

A little surprised we kept 7 CB’s as well. Maybe Gant and 6 CB’s instead…

  24. Jorge Says:

I would’ve like to keep Rudy Carpenter as insurance, but these guys seem to know what they’ve been doing…Donnie Avery and Marty Gilyard got cut today also…wouldn’t mind seeing a burner at WR

  25. Pete Dutcher Says:

    QB Rudy Carpenter
    QB Jonathan Crompton

    RB Armando Allen
    RB Mossis Madu

    WR Maurice Price (injury settlement)
    WR Ed Gant

    TE Nathan Overbay
    TE Ryan Purvis
    TE Daniel Hardy

    C Matt Allen

    S Ahmad Black
    S Dominique Harris

    T Will Barker
    T Cory Brandon

    G Thomas Claiborne
    G Marc Dile (injury settlement)

    LB Brandon Heath
    LB Simoni Lawrence
    LB Tyrone McKenzie
    LB/FB Nick Reveiz
    LB Derrell Smith

    DE Alex Magee
    DE Kyle Moore

    DT Al Woods

    K Jacob Rogers

Not a lot of surprises there. I don’t think Parker deserved a spot. He really didn’t do well at much of anything. Would rather have kept Gant.

Madu is a disaster waiting to happen on the field. Glad he’s gone.

As to TEs I’m surprised they didn’t keep another. I don’t see them staying with just 2 of them. I suspect we’ll see at least one on the squad and another brought in.

  26. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

To all saying they should have kept this 3rd stringer or that 4 stringer. Did you watch those guys in practice ever day?? I think Rah\dom is pretty close to proving at this point, that they know which marginal players have an NFL future. Expect plenty of Bucs cuts to find a new home on teams with less depth.

  27. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

Bradford should definitely make the cut over madu and allen jr. Try to find madu or allen jr. highlights on youtube. Then look at Allen Bradford highlights. Bradford has A LOT of highlight runs for a backup college HB an is 240 lbs with more straight line speed than Blount. Thats why he made the cut. He doesn’t have the tackle breaking ability of Blount but if the o-line can provide some holes he can be a more productive 2nd runner than Caddy or at least push Insurance Graham for the role.

  28. adam from ny Says:

they just needed to meet the deadline with the roster…now it’s time for dom to juggle and play…realisitcally about 48 to 50 of the 53 made the roster…who ever they feel are the last 3 to 5 can be chucked off the cliff in a heartbeat….in fact morry and dommy are looking over the cliff right now to see how far of a fall it is…they are also looking in the water at other teams survivors who are floating in the water and waiting to be rescued….dom will most likely toss a life vest to a couple guys floating in the icy cold waters of the nfl….adam from ny

  29. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

the keeping of overbay and purvis over hardy speaks to how bad we need a real blocking TE. Overbay is a big boy(270lbs) who showed some receiving skills in camp and hopefully he can fill in for stocker if his injury wrecks his rookie season. Whatever the case we need a real dual recieving\blocking threat at tight end. Its not glamorous but it might be our biggest offensive weakness.

  30. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

Also I think Erik Lorig is in the mix to play to play blocking\recieving TE as well as FB.

  31. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

Purvis\Overbay\Lorig\Stocker better show some recieving skills on top of their blocking skills or I wont be happy with the non signing of John Gilmore.

  32. gotbbucs Says:

beckles, gilmore is back on the market so you may get your wish.

    Dude…read the list of cuts.

They did not keep Overbay and Purvis. Both are cut. They cut all three of the tight ends.

Which clearly leaves a hole. We cannot go into the season with just two tight ends on the roster…especially since our OC has several 3 tightend plays in his book.

They will either move a current player to tightend or they will sign someone else.

To all saying they should have kept this 3rd stringer or that 4 stringer. Did you watch those guys in practice ever day?? I’m really not trying to pick a fight here, and I hope you don’t take it that way, but you are contradicting yourself. You say these marginal players have noo future…but then you say “plenty” of them will get signed on other teams. Which would mean they have NFL futures.

I’m of the opinion that very few will get signed to other teams…even if more deserve to be. The NFL increased the number of players in camp…but they did not increase the final roster size. Other than a couple teams, most rosters are mostly set before camp even started. That only leave a couple spots to fill on each team, and those are 99% filled by the guys in their camps.

Yes, a few guys usually get pulled off waivers…but…never “plenty” from any teams cuts. At least not to regular rosters. Some might make a practice squad here and there.

I’m afraid most of our cuts will have to try again next year or may never be seen again. That’s the dirty side of all this…so many rookies never make it. Makes you wonder how many potential hall of famers never even made it into the NFL.

  34. Pete Dutcher Says:

    Gilmore is injury prone.

  35. Tampa--->Baaaaaaayyyy Says:

Everytime I looked at a nice pass and catch after the run with our TEs, there he was, Hardy running for extra YAC.

The Bucs need to get him back on the practice squad.

  36. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

Pete- whoa just went back(while sober) and reread that list of cuts and saw they did cut all three. WTF?? I guess they will be picking up some cuts from teams that are deeper at tight end. I really hope they pick up a tight end that can block worth a crap.

  37. The man Says:

They definitely made the right decision with Bradford. He’s more than just a rb. Although that’s all he will be used for. I watched this kid play in high school. Ranked as the number linebacker in the country his senior year and also a rb. USC used him as a rb although Monty kiffin did want to take him from the offense. He can be a very explosive runner. Keep your eyes peeled
