Lee Roy Selmon In Serious Condition
September 2nd, 2011Update: 10:01 p.m. As part of an historic screwup, the St. Pete Times has withdrawn its report that Selmon passed away. Joe apologizes to those who were mis-led here.
Update: 7:35 p.m. The St. Pete Times reports that Selmon has died.
Joe’s media partners at WTSP-TV, Ch. 10 are reporting that Bucs legend Lee Roy Selmon had a stroke.
There’s really not much to say. This is a very sad moment.
Joe’s had a chance to talk to Selmon a couple of times, and Joe’s not sure there’s a more genuine guy with top-flight values.
Selmon sounded great on radio while on a bit of a media tour just this week. Unfortunately, he was in the public eye shooting down a false report that claimed he was part of a lawsuit against the NFL by former players. Joe can only imagine how being misrepresented so publicly must have weighed on a man of Selmon’s integrity.
Selmon is in Joe’s prayers.

Now his brother is saying he is still alive. Let’s all hope and pray for the best.
September 2nd, 2011 at 8:09 pm
Looks like there are conflicting reports. Sounds like the death was prematurely reported. Regardless, it’s certainly terrible news for the Selmon family. Our thoughts are with you…
September 2nd, 2011 at 8:19 pm
This a great loss, not just to our Buc Family but all the Tampa and surounding areas as he was so involved in our communities. Bless his family and may our prayers reach them in their time of mourning.

A dark day for the Tampa Bay Area.
The First time I met Leroy Selmon was at a Peoples bank in Lakeland. I was a young boy, and he signed a poster they were giving away. He was a giant of a man. But despite the line, took time to talk to me- not just at me with fake interest. He was soft spoken and so articulate and sincere. In my years in the band, I met a lot of Famous people. Leroy Selmon was the only Man i ever asked for an autograph. He was the greatest ambassador an NFL expansion team could have asked for. I never forgot meeting Mr. Selmon
Leroy is the greatest of all Bucs- and that’s saying alot. He has always represented both Team and Town with the greatest of Class and integrity. We were honored by his time here. He was our first Representative in the Hall of Fame. If there was a Hall of Fame for caring Celebrity with Class, he would be there also. He impacted my life in a very positive way, and made me a Buc Fan forever.
My most heartfelt prayers to the Selmon family, and to the larger Buccaneer family. And to the people who lives he touched and who loved him.
And that would be huge amount if People. Including me
God Bless Leroy Selmon
September 2nd, 2011 at 9:35 pm
calm down people. It’s friday night on a long weekend and if Joe is like me he’s already about 6-8 beers in. This is not his responsibility because the media outlets reported this possibly incorrect story.
September 2nd, 2011 at 9:44 pm
there are reasons why canada is refered to as america’s hat. canadabuc what a dumb comment. no offense but you are a nobody who is not a member of the media so i does not matter if you are 1 or 30 beers in at any time. joe has a website that is read by thousands of people. while he did not ‘create’ the story it is his responsibility to keep it factual. if someone yells fire in a theatre and i go running out screaming fire without smelling smoke i would hope i would get my ass kicked if it were false. no need to perpetuate false information. joe is dropping the ball and i’m very thankful his story is not true at this time.
September 2nd, 2011 at 9:55 pm
Guys, Joe is working a high school football game and cannot update this site with his blackberry.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:01 pm
Dropping the ball come on are you kidding me…… Ungrateful people like you must think Joe owes you something.
PS I live in Orlando with both Canadian and US citizenship so i’m not going to acknowledge ignorant comments like that.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:12 pm
Best wishes to the Selmon family.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:20 pm
Joe here,
Take a deep breath everyone. Joe has updated. Let’s just be happy that the Times got it wrong and hope that Lee Roy Selmon can fight his way through.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:22 pm
well said joe
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:35 pm
Get well soon. My prayers go out to Mr. Selmon and the entire Selmon Family.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 pm
I got a Leroy Story.
In 1978 I was in Unniversity Community Hospital for some minor surgery.
Leroy was there that day visiting some kids, and stopped by my room also and gave me an autographed poster. He spent a good half hour with me talking football. I was a little nervous about the surgery so he really put me at ease.
The next day as I was recovering Leroy called me on the phone and asked how I was doing. Ill never forget that. Didn’t have to – no cameras -nobody but me knew he did it. Just genuine kindness.
What a great guy. God bless you Leroy.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:52 pm
Our prayers go out to Mr Selmon and his fam.
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:53 pm
are you doing bmans pickem again?
September 2nd, 2011 at 10:59 pm
Mr. Selmon was the first athelete I ever got an autograph from as a kid. My love for the Buccaneers came because of him. I pray that he fights through this, and also for comfort for the Selmon family.
September 2nd, 2011 at 11:20 pm
Eric – Thanks for sharing…That’s beyond awesome!
September 3rd, 2011 at 1:30 am
Somebody needs to update this website…wait until the family says something before a headline like this is published…no class, no class at all…
September 3rd, 2011 at 1:36 am
Sorry Joe..but fir some reason I am only picking up the update to Serious condition’ when I go to the comments section…main joebucsfan.com is still showing ‘Selmon dead’…hope you accept my apology.

The story was updated at 11 p.m. Not sure what to tell you if you are seeing an hours-old page. Try hitting the refresh button.
September 3rd, 2011 at 2:48 am
Is he okay?? Please let him be.
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:18 am
Man this is horrific news. The guy is the model of what you would ever want in athlete, both on an off the field. With Selmon you only saw good and never, ever, heard of anything bad. I hope he is able to recover.
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:59 am
Joe : your “partner” channel 10 reported that he was dead WAY before the St Pete Times did.
September 3rd, 2011 at 8:16 am
I missed the news until a few minutes ago….listening to him accept his place in the NFL Hall of Fame…I had to wipe the tears from my eyes…..
he has meant so so much the the Tampa Bay area….sad so sad…
September 3rd, 2011 at 8:31 am
Praying for you and your family 63.
September 3rd, 2011 at 9:50 am
Joe, check the spam folder please. My post didn’t show.
September 3rd, 2011 at 10:02 am
Pete… YOU are the spam buddy.
September 3rd, 2011 at 11:14 am
What an embarrassment. A man has a stroke, and all you people can do is argue amongst yourselves. how selfish.
This is why I really have no desire to have comments on my site. Its just not worth it.
September 3rd, 2011 at 12:25 pm
some of the worst reporting this side of dewey v. truman
September 3rd, 2011 at 2:24 pm
Snook:
Joe was not in front of a TV when all of this was going down as he was working a high school football game. But on Twitter, Channel 10 was the lone news source that stuck to their guns when everyone else had Selmon in a morgue. WTSP used Dewey Selmon as a source to report his brother had not died.
In fact, other news outlets mocked WTSP on Twitter for reporting Lee Roy Selmon was still alive.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:29 pm
Niko, you’re right about some of us, not all Of us. A lot of Heartfelt love and best wishes here , also.
I don’t care who reported what. We’ll kick them in the nuts later. I’m just glad that a great man is still among us. That’s all that matters at this moment
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:54 pm
I had a report this morning that Mr. Selmon’s P.R. people confirmed his death to someone in the media, and they used that confirmation as the source…I think that says more about P.R. people than the media.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:06 pm
Sorry, Joe. With all due respect, I was online when all this went down.
When I clicked on your link to Channel 10 it said he had passed away. It was the only site I could find that said he was dead. The St Pete Times later changed their report to a death as well.
Skookum: You’re right. I don’t blame 10 OR the Times. It was the idiot from the restaurant.
