Bucs To Be Tested By “Best Cornerbacks?”
August 26th, 2011Studying all things Dolphins in preparation for Saturday’s game, Joe has learned that Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis is a funny guy.
Davis, a first-round pick in 2009, tells the Miami Herald that he and cornerback running mate Sean Smith (2nd round pick in ’09) are the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
Man, that guy is funny. Davis and Smith combined for TWO interceptions last year.
Regardless, the Bucs’ first-team wide receivers couldn’t get open last week against New England and will face a youngry cornerback duo on Saturday night. They need to step up.
Oh, and Joe’s darn glad Bucs receivers — and Josh Freeman — test their skills against Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib daily in practice rather than against those clowns on the Dolphins.

Let’s see if Josh Freeman can throw a TD pass this year before we start calling anyone else clowns…
August 26th, 2011 at 3:17 pm
^^^Stupid comment. Freeman tossed 25 TD’s last year to only 6 INT’s. He has bragging rights over Vontae Davis and Sean Smith all day every day. Go comment somewhere else.

Best CB duo in the NFL!? 2 picks!!!? They had 2 more than me 🙁
August 26th, 2011 at 3:24 pm
Not really a stupid comment… last year was last year. I have not seen the Bucs first team offense do very much at all in preseason. They look pretty weak in my opinion.
So while I hope they pick right up where they left off in the regular season… I am not sure where Joe has the confidence to call any opponent “clowns” until we actually prove something on the field this year.
If Josh makes Davis and Smith look silly tomorrow night… a different story.
And I will comment wherever I please…

Talib only played 11 games last year and had 6 INT’s. Davis & Smith, between them, played 31 games and had only 2 INT’s. Talib by himself had an INT percentage greater than 8x what those two clowns had. They might be in the NFL with Talib, but they’re not in the same league.

This just in… the Miami Dolphins drafted players this year too. Word is, they are building through the draft as well.
August 26th, 2011 at 4:45 pm
why post this blog…vontae davis is a idiot…..best cornerback tandem in the league yeah right……this comment is not worthy of any attention….
August 26th, 2011 at 4:47 pm
Vontae Davis is pretty impressive. never heard of the other guy. Ronde had zero picks last year.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:01 pm
Free will kick their punk ass-tookuses off the field. Goodbye!
August 26th, 2011 at 5:30 pm
Joe, for a guy living in Florida you sound like one that does not watch Dolphins football. While no way in hell are those two corners the best in NFL, they certainly are up right there. And why have interceptions become a stat to measure how good a CB is? Just because a CB bats down a pass instead of going for an INT does not make him a bad one.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:36 pm
Joe here,
@Jonny — Sorry, but TWO interceptions tells enough of a tale. That’s hard to do over an NFL season for two starting corners. …Joe never said these guys are bad, but the big talk from them really stood out.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:37 pm
If a young corner declares he and his teammate are the best…they are “clowns”
If a young coach declares his Bucs’ team the best team in the NFL, he is just seen as trying to motivate his young team.
The “clown” might be the guy who wrote the article and only sees things through pewter-colored glasses.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:45 pm
@grasshopp427er, Ronde had 3 interceptions last year. These guys are enthusiastic, talented young DB’s, good for them for being confident in their own abilities-even though they might be feeling a little let down after No. 5 torches ’em tomorrow.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:48 pm
grasshop, barber had at least two picks last year. try looking up stats before smart ass comments.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:51 pm
Passing yards allowed per game:
Tampa Bay: 117 (1st in the NFL)
Miami: 180 (12th in the NFL)
‘Nuff said? Yeah…that’s what I thought.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:52 pm
The coach said it, not the players. Vontae davis is not a coach. And at the time Raheem had the wins to back up his statement (Though I know that is a flismy argument..lol) . I personally have no problem with what he said, because usually people like him get exposed after they run their mouth.

Ronde Barber won the Cleveland game for us with his pick and return before halftime. We don’t win that game without that play, no question. Cleveland was on the move, and had all the momentum. Ronde Barber > any cornerback Miami could ever dream of having.
August 26th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Dolphins fans are not allowed on this board. Go away.
August 26th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
And yes it’s motivation when a coach does it, because he is trying to uplift his team and show them that he believes in them. What Vontae Davis is doing is self promotion.
August 26th, 2011 at 6:14 pm
Or could it be that the young corner is just trying to motivate himself, and hold himself to a high standard, and if he thinks he is the best, then maybe he will aspire to that with his play on the field…??
Sound familiar??? Man, so many homers around here.
August 26th, 2011 at 6:36 pm
@ Traew
Yeah, “Bucs fan” is right in the name of the website.
We’re all homers, so why the hell are you here?
August 26th, 2011 at 7:13 pm
I am a fan, but not a homer.
I do not always think everything is pro-Bucs, and I do not always support everything they say or do. I have respect for other teams, and I enjoy the NFL. And my favorite team is the Bucs – and they are the team I root for…just not blindly.

Speaking of CBs… Jason Cole of Yahoo is reporting that Talib is expected to be suspended for 4 games. Not as bad as it could be, of course considering he’s innocent, it might be a tad excessive.
August 26th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
I like this traew. Excellent points buddy! Keep up the good work.
August 26th, 2011 at 7:43 pm
Well at least the Dolphins will have their two best corners on the field. Talib is suspended for 4 games according to yahoo sports.
August 26th, 2011 at 8:26 pm
Lol @ Thomas 2.2 and Traew, sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
Those 2 Cb’s for Miami are going to get scorched by the Bucs, you don’t even know.
Phins better think about bringing Ray Finkle outta retirement.
August 26th, 2011 at 8:41 pm
didnt mr 19 burn davis last year
August 26th, 2011 at 10:13 pm
my bad on the ronde thing. you guys are right; 3 picks last year. vontae davis is still nothing to sneeze at. i wish we had him instead of the cabbie slapppin, helmet wielding, bring a gun to a fist fight and then drop it jackwagon we have now..or make that week 5.
August 26th, 2011 at 11:59 pm
Johhny, you are absolutely right. If anyone has watched the Dolphins are studies other NFL teams they will know that the tandem or Vontae Davis and Sean Smith is one of the best in the NFL. Disregard the interceptions. That is not how great CBs are measured. I believe Nnamdi Asomugha only had one interception last year as well. But I’ll just say as someone that’s more knowledgable than Joe about the rest of the NFL that the Smith and Davis tandem is easily the best young pair of corners in the league.
August 27th, 2011 at 12:04 am
12th in the league with 2 corners that were drafted in 2009 isn’t all that terrible. But be realistic what is he supposed to say “we’re ok but not the best” if you don’t want to win you have to believe your the best. These two definitely not the best those two cats in Philly might have something to say about that. As a Bucs fan I don’t see these two stopping Freeman so good luck Davis so not going to happen.
August 27th, 2011 at 12:02 pm
JohnL: of course you’ll disappear after Freeman scorches them tonight. The doubters always do.
August 27th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
Well… Vontae Davis and Sean Smith are two of the better press man corners in the NFL. Thats why they only have 2 picks last season. As we see with guys like Revis and Asomugha good press man corners don’t get alot of picks because they discourage throws to their man in the first place vs. great zone corners like Talib and Ronde who like to bait QB’s into throwing picks. But BEST tandem in the NFL? Definitely a reach on that one.
And let me join in the LOL at Thomas and Traew dissing “homers” on a Bucs fan site. What do you two expect? A bunch of Falcon and Saints fans? EPIC FAIL!!!!
