Bucs Will Prepare Little For Chiefs
August 4th, 2011The wild and wacky 2011 season continues to be unique. Signed free agents still haven’t practiced (hopefully today), and now the Bucs won’t prepare in a traditional way for Game 1 of the preseason, Friday Aug. 12 in Kansas City.
Speaking to the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, Wednesday afternoon on WDAE-AM 620, Raheem Morris explained his club will care little about their opponent until the day before the game.
We “might go into [the preseason opener] with two days of preparation, one day, whatever the case may be, because I think it’s more important for us to get our brand of football in place and then go excecute … rather than a normal game plan,” Raheem said.
This is out of the norm, even for a preseason game, but almost necessary for all teams, courtesy of the asinine lockout. Joe can only imagine the craziness on a club with a new coach and/or a new quarterback.
Joe’s putting even less stock in any preseason result this season.

Joe, I don’t know why you put any stock whatsoever in the preseason. The year Detroit went 0-16 they were the only team in the league to have a 4-0 preseason.

I really do laugh at people that score watch during preseason games. Get our stuff in line work on live drills that need work and call it a day no matter the score. As long as we’re ready for the Kitties come Week 1 I could care less what the preseason record is.

You should tweak your headline and make it read “Bucs Will Prepare For Little Chiefs.”

At first thought the idea is preposterous, but then you think, “well, rather blow the preseason than the regular season. It just sucks that we won’t be in top form until probably week four or five.

There is no way to be critical of this.
A) The NFL preseason is the biggest fraud and customer rip-off in entertainment history;
B) These are extraordinarily unusual circumstances to have so few organized team activities before what is sold to the customer as a “game.”
I hope that they are no serious injuries. I would probably not play anyone important and would just hope to survive the contest without injuries. I may even coach my guys to approach the game as if it were a Pro Bowl like situation – a glorified touch football game.

“there are”

The only thing that matters in preseason is injuries.

These games are where you learn who to keep for what and who you need to replace. It is “hold them or fold them time” always has been, always will. So except for when the 1st team is in there, and don’t expect that everything will be shown before it counts, it is position tryouts and/or growth experience.
For example, the Mike position will be a four game growth experience period. I figure three to play the position except for injuries so they can learn and get used to the helmet headset for when it counts.

This is how people get hurt .. Because there will be guys fighting for their NFL lives and you arent full speed, you might get screwed.
I enjoy the preseason. Its the appetizer for the season and we get to see the Young Bucs give it all they got. I like the battles

You know what’s funny? Even though everyone here is agreeing right now that the preseason is meaningless (especially this year), I bet if the Bucs lose a game or two in the preseason guys like Eric, Patrick and 2.2 will be proclaiming doom and offering all sorts of criticisms and “evidence” to support their negative predictions. Just watch.
You can’t have it both ways. It can’t be meaningless today and meaningful tomorrow. I’m waiting for the opportunity to call these guys out when it happens. Oh yeah.

“You should tweak your headline and make it read “Bucs Will Prepare For Little Chiefs.”” -Espo
That’s exactly what I thought it said at first..

You know, i think Thomas said it best. I agree 90%, 10% says there are still depth questions on our team that the preseason will help figure out
August 4th, 2011 at 10:41 am
Ill bet you cant tell the late round rookies or the undrafted free agents that.

I remember we went undefeated one pre-season, then 2-14 in the regular.
The great Jerry Goldstein at QB I think., with a mix of the throwin Samoan.
The games are a fraud, but you notice the owners made damn sure they got the CBA done so they could be played.

Is “Little” our big free agent signing?
August 4th, 2011 at 11:51 am
preseason should be 2 games instead of 4.. it scares me that theres 4 games that dont mean anything but could hurt our chances of playoffs next year if important players get injured..
August 4th, 2011 at 12:23 pm
Can’t wait! While Freeman and other starters probably won’t play anything more than a possession or two, I’ll be there cheering them on! Gonna be great to see our new draft picks on the field. Just pray for no injuries! A successful preseason is an injury-free one. Records are meaningless!

Joe here,
@Eric — Great “Little” joke. Well done.

@CharlieB
I don’t know why Joe does, but I know why I put stock in the preseason. Your point about the lack of usefulness in foretelling how a team will do in the regular season is a valid one.
But I like Preseason because we get to see the rookies highlighted. Yes…it can be boring as heck at times, and to be honest after the second preseason game I’m usually wishing the regular season would start.
But in the preseason we get to see glimpses of potentially good players. For example, Mike Williams last year. And without preseason, Dominick and Morris would not have had tape to watch on Blount (pro tape I mean).
I view it strictly for player evaluation.
And to address the Free Agent issue, I think the Bucs plan to raid practice squads. They usually have some gems on them.

I’ll watch just about every snap of every pre season game this year. We’ve got a ton of young guys that need the preseason to prove themselves individually. While preseason is obviously useless in judging teams it’s nice for judging individuals like our MLBs and D ends. Can’t wait to see how Bowers does.

Preseason football beats the hell out of of no football at all.
