Shaun King Wants Another 3rd-Down Athlete
August 2nd, 2011Perhaps the only media type in the galaxy to predict a winning season for the Bucs in 2010 — and offer detailed logic behind it — former Bucs QB Shaun King liked what he saw from the Bucs offense last night in their first practice in pads. But King says there’s a missing piece.
That would be what he called “a more athletic option” on third down, King said today on the King David Show on 1010 AM.
King lamented the Bucs’ loss/non-pursuit of Reggie Bush and tossed a bunch of cold water on young wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe. Publicly, the Bucs are high on the 21-year-old, who caught four balls in New Orleans last year to close the season.
“I wasn’t really impresssed with him getting in and out of his breaks,” King said of Briscoe’s work last night.
On the flip side, King was speechless watching Mike Williams. “I don’t even know what to say. Outstanding,” King said.
A proponent of the Bucs scoring Sidney Rice in free agency — he’s in Seattle now — King said he doesn’t have a name to offer Bucs fans, but he can tell they need another piece to reach an elite level on offense.
Joe’s all for the Bucs bringing in another receiver, but primarily because of Arellious Benn’s status. As good as Benn might look, the guy had ACL surgery seven months ago.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:37 pm
That would be Mr. Winslow…
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:37 pm
Third down…Is not that Winslow’s job?
I agree Joe, Benn is our third down receiver if he stays healthy..What about the little dude from WV, do you think he is going to stick? He was waesome in college. Could he turn into a Steve Smith type player?
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:38 pm
we’ve got plenty of options at receiver. Shaun King is an idiot.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:40 pm
non-pursuit of Reggie Bush? The Saints publicly said they would not move him within the division. Does anyone pay attention for god sakes? I would think Shaun King might if hes going to be considered an expert.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:42 pm
Shaun, I wasn’t impressed you as an NFL quarterback or as an expert on ESPN, go away.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:43 pm
Has Benn been (no pun intended) a full go in pads? Haven’t heard any camp news on him
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:50 pm
After a step back this year, We will be selecting higher in the draft. I am sure that we will pickup some explosive player thru the draft. Here is to building the future.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:51 pm
I think they heald Benn out of the full contact, as a precaution.
August 2nd, 2011 at 3:53 pm
Disappointed to hear Briscoe not taking the next step in his development. Which brings me to my next point, why the hell was he not at Freeman’s off season mini camp??
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:02 pm
from what i heard briscoe looked great in every practice/walkthrough EXCEPT last night when they put on pads… i wond say hes ‘not moving forward’ because of one practice.
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:03 pm
yea, god forbid someone has a bad practice, lets go out and spend 7m on getting a replacement every time that happens.
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:19 pm
Everyone keeps talking Benn up but I am hearing that he is not ready. They apparently have him on a limited practice schedule, I have heard two theories: one is precuation, and the other is a recent set-back.
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:19 pm
For God’s sakes, Briscoe had ONE good game people! He hasn’t proven a thing yet. Calm down. Let him prove himself. We had the money to get a young, proven player out of free agency but as usual we never do it. Instead everybody thinks Sammie Stroughter and Preston Parker are so great.
So what if he has great practices? Don’t let that fool you. Didn’t Clayton have good practices? Look how that turned out.
“The Glazers will dig into free agency when they’re ready to contend”
How interesting. When they’re “ready” to contend. Do it now! This team could be so much further ahead right now and is ready to make a deep run if a few improvements were made.
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:33 pm
Are there two Patricks on this site?
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:40 pm
lol @ patrick, you need to calm down.
what young proven player did you want?
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:41 pm
Two can play that game by the way Patrick, as you seem to think that any player who wasn’t on the Bucs last year is great.
August 2nd, 2011 at 4:55 pm
KH is right Patrick, what young proven receiver did you want the Bucs to pick up? Holmes would be the closest, but as long as Benn is healthy we should be good at WR.
August 2nd, 2011 at 5:07 pm
Holmes?!? Holmes lol!
Yea ok, he said was never going to leave the Jets, do keep up.
I suppose you think we should have traded for Reggie Bush too, no matter that the Saints wouldn’t have traded him to the Bucs.
The only player I will concede that I think the Bucs should have gone after is Darren Sproles, but the Saints gave him a lot of money for a 3rd down guy and I think we can find good production from elsewhere.
August 2nd, 2011 at 5:09 pm
sorry McBuc, somewhat misread what you wrote in my haste to jump into discussion.
August 2nd, 2011 at 5:46 pm
Shaun I wasn’t impressed with your QB skills either! I tell you what if Briscoe turns out decent we are set a WR you spend too much time playing cards instead of watching the Bucs.
August 2nd, 2011 at 6:05 pm
Shaun King was such an outstanding player. Too bad he couldn’t see over the line, like Jeffy Lube.
Why don’t we just get rid of the whole damn team and start over?
August 2nd, 2011 at 6:05 pm
A dynamic 3rd-down back would add another dimension to this team that could only help. Graham and Caddy are great guys but neither threaten a defense much as playmakers. Our RB depth chart is too conservative right now. Looking at the contracts that Bush, Sproles, etc. received it would’ve been very affordable to add one.
August 2nd, 2011 at 6:06 pm
I’ll bet we can woo Randy Moss out of retirement for $2 million!
August 2nd, 2011 at 6:07 pm
How about TJ oushmandzahad?
Seriously. Anyone?
August 2nd, 2011 at 6:08 pm
I agree that we are missing a piece to the puzzle, but not at receiver. To me it’s in the backfield….we are missing a little electricity. I understand and fully support the concept of build through the draft, so my only disappointment was when we took Bradford rather than Grigsby. Start watching some college ball and keep your eye out for a sub 4.4 home run hitter with great hands and a willingness to pass block. Te’o, Harris, or James in 2012?
I’m not a fan of free agency, but if he has returned to form I always thought Norwood might be worth a look in camp.
August 2nd, 2011 at 7:22 pm
@Mr. Lucky
I’m not saying we should sign Randy Moss out of retirement or anything, but I’ve found it hard to believe he’s washed up already like everyone thinks. Just a year ago while he was still with the Patriots, he was still a productive receiver. However after that, it seemed like he was a victim of a bunch of drama. Minnesota had a season full of chaos, Childress got fired, and all of a sudden he was released out of nowhere. Tennessee picked him up towards the middle of the season, but when you’re that far into the year, it’s hard for a team to find a role for you. Seems like everyone just forgot about him and figured he was done. Sure maybe he’s lost a step, but if he was with a more stable organization like the Bucs, unlike the Vikings or Titans, I think he’d probably be happier and be able to be productive. Just sayin. As for the Moss drama, he’s not as bad as TO or Ochocinco.
I would’ve liked it if the Bucs had signed Sidney Rice as an extra downfield weapon for Freeman, as he is only 26 and would fit the youth movement perfectly. But if we were looking for a veteran, Moss would probably be my pick just sayin.

Could Bucs bring Noel Divine into camp as a Scat/3rd down back?
That dude is electric. Pound them 20-25 times with Blount/Bradford, and then unleash a water bug on them.
August 2nd, 2011 at 8:37 pm
What about TJ?
August 2nd, 2011 at 9:49 pm
benn on hold for two weeks after bucs eval
August 2nd, 2011 at 9:53 pm
sorry miss wrote / no pads for two weeks
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:49 pm
Divine? The same guy that just quit on the eagles? Really? I’d rather wait 8 months than pick that trash out of the dumpster.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:56 pm
I asked Mike Williams what receiver would open alot of eyes this season
& he said Briscoe so I’ll take his word. I also think Winslow is gonna have
a big year.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:15 pm
K2 just keeps getting better. Another great acquisition by The Dom.
August 3rd, 2011 at 9:31 am
KH…No worries my man, I was a bit taken back, but no nig deal. I knew that about Holmes, but he was the only receiver that fit the bill. I am not sure who these guys think the Bucs could just go out and get, like shopping at Wal-Mart or something. I like the Punter, and think everyone else will agree after a couple of games. I would have liked to see a vet at DE brought in, but we have a couple guys that have been aroung and an outstanding new coach. We shall see, but I agree with your post above.

I would like to see the bucs trade for Steve slaton he’s one year removed from a 1000 yard season and wouldn’t be expensive at all plus he’s a good receiver and a good chance of pace for blunt
