D-Line Vs. O-Line; Price Sits Out

Despite the glorfied touch-football, no-pads nature of these early practices, the drill with one defensive lineman lining up against the entire offensive line working in position is fun to watch.
Actually, anything that involves the animated D-line coach Keith Millard, is worth the time.
Some highlights:
1) Alex Magee got an earful from Millard for jumping offsides.
2) Jeff Faine threw Al Woods to the turf — quickly — nearly right off the snap. Like a true captain, Faine was up and coaching Woods on what he did wrong a couple of minutes later.
3) Adrian Clayborn was mad that he couldn’t beat Donald Penn after a coule of shots. Keep trying, kid.
4) Roy Miller drew screams of joy, “Yes! Yes,” from Millard. Not sure why, but Millard’s raspy voice hit a new level.
5) Derek Hardman working at left tackle looked uncomfortable.
6) As usual, after the session, Gerald McCoy waited on his water break to come talk to Millard about technique. McCoy did the same thing after working on the dummies.
Sadly, Brian Price was walking gingerly after an earlier 11-on-11 session and sat out several drills. Joe’s got no clue why.
Again, as Raheem Morris said, these guys are all working in their underwear, so Joe’s not drawing any legitimate conclusions.

I didn’t notice it at practice yesterday but I saw a video last night and Price was walking like an old man. I think he is trying to work thru the pain like a warrior, but I hope it’s not too serious as we need him.

honestly im hoping its more muscle soreness due to conditioning than joint problems

It looked like he got rolled up on the backside of the play. Did not *look* worse than that. He is playing through some pain but that particular thing looked like simply a bump that comes with contact.

Well, that’s not fair. Why do all the people that think we’re going to suck because we aren’t spending money on every free agent out there get to work with Gerald McCoy?

Hardman looking uncomfortable at LT? That’s where he played at Eastern Kientucky (after arriving as a TE) but he has pretty darn short arms for an OT (32, I think). I still think he might be a pretty decent RT if given a chance.

Adrian Clayborn will learn a lot from going against Donald Penn when Penn is in good shape. It’ll be a lot like Williams going up against Talib. Let’s hope that Penn is as good a coach as Talib is and that Clayborn channels his frustration into improvement rather than just pouting.

CharlieB you’re right. Penn will make Clayborn such a better passrusher with there battles in practice. Cant wait to see what our rookie DE’s can do this year 😀

Clayborn will probably be getting schooled in the intricacies of playing DE in the NFL by every LT he faces this year. I really think it’s gonna take him some time to learn and be productive as he’ll be facing the best every team has to offer. Going against Penn in practice will help, but it will still take some time. If Bowers can produce from the other end and McCoy can be disruptive inside, all I really hope to see from Clayborn is holding the point and preventing the cutback lanes, shedding blocks and tackling RBs. If he rarely sees the QB this year, I’m ok with that so long as he continues to learn and improve so he can be a force next year. If our D-line isn’t getting pushed around like they’re on ice skates this year, I think our LBs will play much better, and our DBs will also benefit. Penetrate and disrupt, but if you can’t… hold your point so another can make the play.

I don’t mind them being cautious with Price. Even if he has to sit out a couple practices a week, so he can be good to go on Sundays and improves his longevity. I’m cool with that. But i swear, As soon as price get’s 90% to 100% he will be the DOMINATE DT on our team. McCoy is awesome and very talented but i think Price will be the better man in the future. Kind of the same feeling i have with Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams. Right now williams is the Star. There is a reason Bucs traded UP to get him and he started to come on strong towards the end of the season before his injury. He may have been slow to pick up the playbook. But i honestly think he is a better reciever in the long run. And Bowers will be the Better Pick over Clayborn down the road too. Ha i see a trend here with the second pick of the same position. 1st one immediate star. second one, future stud. Either who its a good problem to have, honestly speaking. Having future stars be better then the already rising stars GO BUCS!

Price still has to beat out Roy Miller and Frank Okam for a spot next to Gerald McCoy………it’s gonna be a while, don’t get your hopes up.
