Lumpkin Love From Dominik
July 8th, 2011There’s no need for Tiki Barber when you’ve got LeGarrette Blount, Kregg Lumpkin, and Allen Bradford.
That was the sentiment expressed by Mark Dominik yesterday when chatting with fill-in host Mike Florio on The Dan Patrick Show.
Of course, since Barber remains property of the New York Giants, Dominik is not permitted to talk about him specificially. But Dominik made it clear that he’s happy with the guys on his roster. It’s hardly a surprise that Dominik isn’t seeking an ancient running back who’s been on the couch and frolicking around Manhattan for several years.
Dominik went out of his way to tell Florio and the national radio audience that Lumpkin is a little-known, up-and-comer who “played well in the last game for us.”
“We’ve got three big backs. Three young backs that we’re pretty excited about,” Dominik said.
Conspiracy theorists are free to interpret Dominik not mentioning free agent Cadillac Williams in a running backs discussion. Joe doesn’t think it reveals anything. But Joe also doesn’t think the Bucs would have any problem with Earnest Graham filling Cadillac’s role.

Were you hoping for:
“Three young backs that we’re pretty excited about, and two really old ones.”

i think the bucs would love to have caddy back, but i also dont think they’ll be the highest bidder for him. the signing of lumpkin was a calculated move by dominik no matter how minute it may have seemed at the time.

U pick’em! It will be Cadillac or Graham, but not both. Of course, if this doesn’t happen, I will blame it on the lockout!

I want Caddillac back. He did everything they asked from him last season.
Does anyone know what a lumpkin is? LOL!

graham is also a legit FB now – not a fill-in.
that should raise his value. he shouldn’t be just tiered in with the other guys…

How many backs will we carry? who makes the 53 man roster?
Blount
Bradford
Lumpkin
Williams
Graham
Huggins
Lorig
Undrafted FA

It’s going to be crowded at WR too:
M Williams
Benn
Spurlock
Stroughter
Briscoe
Parker
Stovall
Gant (kid we picked up off AZ’s P-squad late 2010; Philip Buchanon’s little brother)
I think Stovall is the odd man out.

I predict our backs will be:
BLOUNT
BRADFORD
LUMPKIN
GRAHAM
LORIG
I really think Bradford will be used as the primary backup for Blount. Graham or Lumpkin will be the 3rd Down backs.
WIDEOUTS:
WILLIAMS
BENN
STROUGHTER
SPURLOCK
BRISCOE
PARKER
I think Stovall and Gant are out. I think Dominik saw stuff he like in Parker. Remember Parker did get on the field quite often. (Usually just special teams). But he stuck around pretty much the whole season.

Chris
I did a search for lumpkin and it is slang for…well, let’s just say it can’t be repeated on Joe’s site! Not a name I would want to have associated with slang.

As for Caddy, I hope he does return also!

As four our roster

Lumpkin
Lorig
Graham
Huggy on PUP
Grigsby, Locke, Spann, Fannin, or Devine on the PS

I watched Lumpkin tear up the backfield for 4 years at UGA. love what the kid brought to the organization last year. Most bucs fans really dont know what he’s got yet but @new orleans was a small glimpse. i”m not saying 1st string by any means but certainly not empty in the depth chart behind Blount and hopefully williams too. its going to be fun for sure
